CHUKS ONWUDINJO There s an article in this edition that really touched a chord with me. The piece written by Dr Ify Nwakwesi is a two part series titled My Journey To Health. This chronicles her time fighting depression. Another friend of mine, Betty Irabor, also went through the same painful journey for nine years! And all this while, I had no clue! Like Dr Ify, she too has created a platform, Life Lessons, to draw more attention to this ailment that is often overshadowed, downplayed and frowned upon. People see it as indulgence or worse still, seeking for attention. It doesn t help if the victim seemingly has it all: Sound career/business, physically in good shape, good, providing husband, lovely house, great children and a bevy of friends from all works of life. To the average person what more can anyone ask for? You are even sometimes sneered at for being too self-absorbed with yourself. But thank God more awareness is being created about this silent disease that can make you go round the bend if it is not well attended to. Many a time, we see certain people behave in a certain way and complain that they are too cranky, too moody and just difficult to live with or manage. This same person might just be suffering from mental health issues and loved ones require a lot of patience to see them through this challenge. So please next time, before we pass any judgment on someone who has been acting out of character, let us look deeper and try to comprehend what is happening. There are quite a few platforms fighting this cause and all we need to do is research and find an avenue to help them regain what they once had a normal happy life! FASHION DIRECTOR/EXECUTIVE EDITOR

4 STYLE & DESIGN What Language do your clothes speak? The truth is people are constantly judging you by your clothes either unconsciously or consciously. Many of us have made quick assessments about someone based on what clothes they were wearing at different points in time. The way you look says a lot about you and how you feel about yourself. Some individuals might not think about what they wear and how it s all put together because they feel it s not that important or because they don t have the time. The point is, it does matter because the way you look is a form of self expression that also impacts how people see or treat you. Your style speaks for you without you saying a word. What language are your clothes speaking? If what we wore and how it s all put together didn t matter, then why does the banking industry have a recommended standard of dressing for the bankers? Why do the fast food restaurants care about the way their staff look, or even the airline hostesses care about maintaining uniformity with the way they look? The truth is what we wear matters and I am not saying it has to be high end designers; you don t want to be a slave to trends either. It s important to find and wear pieces that show your personality. Since everyone s finances are all different, you don t have to spend an arm and a leg to look fantastic. Always remain true to yourself while incorporating what s in style to suit you as an individual without losing your own sense of style with confidence. The next time you think what you are wearing doesn t matter, think again. The two styles featured give a great visual of how what we wear and how we wear it matters. What language are the images in the pictures saying to you? Aramide is a fashion stylist and designer. 6 STYLE & DESIGN gianvito rossi 5 fun ways to STYLE & DESIGN Bright, bold, and unapologetic, the colour red may sometimes seem more daunting than others but its actually one of the easiest to play around with fashion wise. Want to give it a try, keep reading to find out about some effortless ways to incorporate crimson into your wardrobe, regardless of if you re going for a subtle pop of colour or something bolder. jennifer obayuwana gucci horsebit belt christian louboutin balanle olakunni dolce and gabbana miu miu wear RED By Konye Chelsea nwabogor By just adding a red item or two to your outfit, you can make your casual ensemble infinitely more stylish and trendy. All you need to do is select what item or which pieces you want to rock in the fiery hue. To rock this trend with a feminine and flirty aesthetic, try pairing your favouritered pieces with mosaic designs. The combination can be very complementary and can easily create a contemporary and fashionable look. nowe isibor Don t shy away from this trend just because you prefer a more minimal colour palette. If you don t quite feel like rocking a red outfit, why not opt for red accessories instead? Thanks to their bold hue, these fiery pieces can make a statement without appearing too intense. Just remember to stick to one or two pieces and keep the rest of your outfit neutral. ebube nwagbo Patterns can be a fun and playful way to rock the colour red. Although they can often seem more intense than block colours, patterns can actually subdue a vibrant red hue by breaking up the bright tone. All you need to do is pick your favourite option. While florals are always a lovely choice, you should also consider checks, tartan, gingham, and stripes. la perla Whether you choose a blazer or a shirtdress, make it bold and eyecatching. Also, remember to keep the rest of your look minimal and subdued. Your favourite colour black will do the trick nicely. johanna oritz makida moka zuhair murad Dear Watcher OF TONYE COLE TIMES HOW MUCH DO I REALLY NEED? There is something about being at the edge of the world that makes a connection to Heaven a tweeny bit more tangible and our thoughts more spiritual in nature. Sitting at the bay looking out towards Antarctica from one of the southernmost parts of the African continent, I could just imagine explorers of old like Sir Ernest Shackleton, gathering his crew together as they prepared to cross this last body of ocean, heading further south than any human before them had, into weather so extreme WATCHERS OF TIMES BY TONYE COLE and landscape so breathtakingly beautiful yet unforgivingly harsh, no human being is meant to habit it permanently. As my dear South African brother and I sat over cocktails and watched the skies ablaze with the dance of the setting sun, the cold breeze reminded us just how far south of the equator we had ventured and from whence the winds bore its chill. Maybe as a result of where we were or just something about the frugality of life when faced with the vastness of nature, my pal relayed the journey to minimalism his life had taken a few years after turning 50. It was a deep lesson of soul cleansing and spiritual upliftment that comes with freeing oneself from the lifelong bondage of materialism. By delving into the realm of keeping only what is absolutely necessary and doing away with everything else, every material clutter in his live was removed, some painfully so, leaving him with greater clarity of purpose and a keen understanding of who he was created to be. The Almighty God, Creator of the universe, implanted His code into every living creature. All living creatures, except the fallen man, only gather what they need and those who kill for food only slay what they eat. In the biblical example of providing manna to the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt, Yahweh instructed them to gather ONLY what they needed for the day and no more. It struck me even as he relayed his journey and the sunset turned to night that our desire to accumulate material things is not driven by necessity but more often as a result of avarice, pride, ego, ignorance and many other vices that eat to the core of our souls. Surely we do much better in spirit, soul and body when we give out more and accumulate less. Empty handed we came, empty handed we shall leave. gucci cardholder victoria beckham zimmerman mr by man repeller For your comments, contributions, connect with me on Twitter

8 COVER THE ROYAL HIBISCUS HOTEL CREDITS Styled by Veronica Odeka of Vane Style and Moses Ebite of Moashy Styling Photograph by Emmanuel Oyeleke Hair by Haircraft Make up COVER ZAINAB BALOGUN How did you get involved with the Royal Hibiscus Hotel movie? I was called to audition for RHH by the Ebony life Films team. Having worked with them before and being a part of the EL family, it was an honour to get the invitation to audition for the lead role in their first romantic comedy. Tell me a bit about your character? Ope is a chef on the quest to make her dreams of owning her own restaurant in London a reality. Like any dream, she was faced with a few challenges that made returning home her last option. Ope is driven, warm and extremely resilient. Love was not initially on the agenda for her but like they say, you never know what you re really looking for until it s standing right in front of you. What about this movie stands out from the other works you have been involved with? RHH is a true romantic comedy in every sense of the phrase, which I never had the opportunity to feature in before the movie. It is a feel good movie that tugs at your heartstrings on many values. From passion, food, family and more, there s something for everyone to identify with in the movie and I believe that is a commendable thing. What would you most like the audience to take away from the movie? No matter how far you run, home is really where the heart is. What other projects are you involved in at the moment? I am currently in-between reading a few scripts slated to shoot this year. I am also extremely happy to share that you ll be seeing more of me as a leading lady in the following movies; Sylvia by Trino Studios, Walking with Shadows by A oife O Kelly and The Door by Jude Idada. Outside of the movie world, I can now officially refer to myself as the first creative director at IMNI Global; an online marketplace for shoes to showcase Nigerian designers. I have partnered with IMNI to design my very own shoe line called XYZ by Zainab Balogun. This collection is aimed at men and women who just like me, love to look and feel good on a budget. I ll be bringing you edgy, comfortable designs true to the Nigerian vibe. RACHEAL ONIGA Tell me about your role in the movie, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel? Rachel Oniga played the character Rose Adeniyi. Rose is a typical Nigerian mother and the kind of wife a Nigerian man would love to have. She s also a loving mother. You need to watch The Royal Hibiscus Hotel to know how it plays out. Ebony Life Films - one of the producers of record breaking The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai will today premiere its new movie, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, and it promises to be an unforgettable evening. Billed as a Festival of Music, Food and Love, this is the worldwide premiere of this romantic comedy, which had its Festival premiere at The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Set in Lagos and London, the Royal Hibiscus Hotel is about Ope, a disillusioned chef (Zainab Balogun) working in London. She returns to Nigeria and is soon entangled with Deji (Kenneth Okolie), the devilishly handsome entrepreneur with a secret plan that could alter Ope s life for good. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is undoubtedly one of the most romantic films ever made in Nollywood. Viewers will be entranced by its depiction of love for couples of every generation. In this interview with KONYE CHELSEA NWABOGOR the lead casts lets us in on what to expect. After so many years in this industry, how do you approach each new role? Is it at all possible to become and stay excited about new projects? As an actor you have to love and enjoy every job. I tell you this movie is going to be a hit because each time I got physically exhausted on set, all I had to do was put on my costume for another scene and the strength would come. I just loved every moment and forgot about being tired. What makes this movie different from every other movie that you have been in? In most movies nowadays, the couple is often younger The Royal Hibiscus Hotel celebrates this in addition to the much older couple. There was also another older couple, played by Jide Kosoko and I as well as the couple played by Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs. Why do you think women will specifically connect with this movie? I bet you it is the dream of every mother, young or old, to see her daughter walk down the aisle with the man of her dreams. Let s not forget the part of every mother wanting to see her grandchildren. In fact, grandmas will see themselves in my character Rose Adeniyi one-way or the other. How do you think this movie would help take the Nigerian film industry to the next level? I already believe Nollywood has come a long way because of production outfits like Ebony Life Films. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel was one of the three African movies to get screened at TIFF 2017 and the only movie from Nigeria. That move enabled us showcase the best of Nigerian movies to the world. I see great things for the Nigerian movie industry. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel has been a passion project for me the chance to tell an intimate story that has heart and soul, and explores romantic love in the older and younger generations. The film addresses some of the challenges around communication in relationships, while managing to be funny, warm and entertaining. Many of us have forgotten what it feels like to fall in love I hope The Royal Hibiscus Hotel re-ignites this feeling in us all. - MO ABUDU 14 15

9 COVER KENNETH OKOLIE How challenging was it like to shoot your scenes in this movie? It was interesting and quite challenging in a positive way. It s always thrilling to be able to tell a story and in this case, the story of Deji was a pleasure to bring to life. I had always believed I had impeccable standards when it came to work ethics and discipline but this production tested those boundaries. A lot of late nights and a lot of early mornings but I would not have had it any other way Many actors, though they probably wouldn t admit it, act according to a certain style or method they ve developed over the years. Would you say you re such an actor? I am more of a style actor for me, it s important to embody a role in a way that feels authentic to the story and character. Assume I was a square and I get a round hole script, I immediately try to reinvent my acting to accurately depict the creative direction of the writers. Each role leaves me a much stronger performer than the initial. What do you think would be the viewers response to this movie? I think they will enjoy the movie. It s a beautiful, heartfelt film that will make audiences laugh, cry and believe in love over again. I ll share my own experience. The press screening was the first time I saw the movie in its entirety and I was blown away. Although I had read the script, the movie came to life in a way I had not imagined. What effect do you believe being on this movie would have on your career going forward? First off, I feel honoured to be a part of Ebonylife Films production. Their movies have grossed well over N1,000,000,000 and that figure is rising rapidly. I hope this role will help me grow as an actor, by showcasing my abilities to the wider audience Ebonylife Films can reach. What gave you most pleasure in being part of the cast? It probably is the wonderful people I worked with cast and crew. They were warm and professional. I had the rare opportunity to work with industry giants including Jide Kosoko, Joke Silva, Olu Jacobs and Rachael Oniga. It is no surprise that they have risen to the very pinnacle of Nollywood and continue to remain relevant long beyond their youthful years. All in all, the experience was very positive and I m thankful to have been part of it. JIDE KOSOKO What prompted you to take on the role of Segun Adeniyi? The story of The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is captivating and different; it was an opportunity I couldn t pass up. I loved the script and I knew the company behind it (Ebony Life Films) will do justice to it they did! What was it like being on the set? It was fun, warm and professional. I wish every set could be like the set of The Royal Hibiscus Hotel. The younger generation is passionate, hungry and driven. You can see that they mean business with their professionalism. Nollywood is in safe hands. You are part of the pioneers and creators of Nollywood. How has your vision of the industry changed? Nollywood has definitely grown since I first came on the scene. I am proud of what I see; I envision more growth, structure and global recognition for the industry. It makes me happy to see Ebony life Films flying the flag high internationally. Back to back appearances at the Toronto International Film Festival with inspired works speaks volumes of the outfit s goals The old and new Nollywood debate has been raging for a minute. What s your take on it? I do not agree with that phrase. Nollywood has evolved, that s for sure. The new can learn from the old and vice versa. The goal is to have a film industry that s thriving and innovative. The old and the new must feed off one another to drive Nollywood beyond where it currently sits. What would you attribute your love of the movie industry to? Movies represent the only way I can tell stories that are relatable. I enjoy telling stories in ways that people old and young can relate to. Until there is a better means to pass messages across while entertaining the audience, I will continue to be a performer. 16

A phone case isn t a classic Valentine gift, but this one right here would constantly remind her that she has your heart. One evening in 1987, about 8:00pm, my husband and I were driving to Anthony Village. I believe we must have been going to visit his brother. I suddenly felt some hot sensation on my right thigh and I recall asking my husband whether the air-conditioner was blowing hot air. He checked and said no. This hot sensation persisted and I felt it from one part of my body to the other. This was the beginning of an ill-health I had to deal with for well over six years of my life. Within a week, so many other symptoms appeared. I started experiencing anxiety symptoms and noticed I was becoming very moody. Sometimes I would have panic attacks and the most frightening experience was the sudden feeling that I would die if nobody was around me. I would break out in sweat, my breathing would be fast and shallow and I would run out of the room in fright looking for someone to talk to. I observed I was easily fatigued. In church, I was not able to stand without feeling that I would fall or loose balance. For me to be able to stand, I would have to hold on to somebody or the pew. I also noticed that after eating I would feel bloated and I had problem of too much gas, constipation and heartburn. The most dramatic aspect of the ill-health was the panic attack. The frequency was increasing and I decided to consult a doctor. After few consultations, he made a diagnosis of anxiety neurosis with reactive depression. He put me on some drugs which included inderel and diazepam. I had some relief but had some uncomfortable side effects from the drugs. The most significant was dryness of mouth which I found very irritating. Inspite of the drugs, I still had very serious panic attacks and I had to be admitted to the hospital, I had to be given some intravenous injections to calm me down. I spent about one week in the hospital which I found boring. I am a very bad patient and hated losing my freedom. I got better and was discharged but my health problems continued. Infact after two weeks of my discharge, most of the symptoms reappeared in greater intensity inspite of the fact that I was still taking the medication. Someone introduced me to some Chinese herbs, which I took for a while and still did not recover. Inspite of my ill-health, I still managed to continue with my business. The interesting phenomenon is that people would often tell me that I was looking good but I knew that I was battling with an imbalance in myself which was making me very unhappy and less productive. My husband was very worried about my state of health and he advised that I discontinue business as he was of the opinion that my ill-health may be due to stress. I did not and I continued to go to work. Despite Sometimes I would have panic attacks and the most frightening experience was the sudden feeling that I would die if nobody was around me. I would break out in sweat, my breathing would be fast and shallow and I would run out of the room in fright looking for someone to talk to my ill-health I was still excited about my business challenges and overcoming these challenges gave me a lot of satisfaction. On one of my days at work, I was feeling particularly weak and my anxiety attack was more dramatic. One would have expected that someone in that situation would just go home and rest in bed I did not, I continued with my work and suddenly I felt dizzy, and had severe palpitations, that is my heart beating faster than normal and louder. I could hear my heart beat and then suddenly I heard myself say oh I am dying oh I am very weak, God help me.. and I passed out. When I opened my eyes. I was lying in a hospital bed at First Consultant Medical Center. I was told that I arrived the hospital with a feeble pulse rate and at a point, they could not get any pulse rate. They worked hard to resuscitate me and I responded. I thank God for the opportunity I was given for recovery. We all know and hear about people who died during such attack. I was discharged two days after admission. I am not too sure that any further investigations were carried out to determine the cause of my collapse. I believe it was attributed to stress. That may have been the cause but I may also have suffered from a transient Ischemic attack. In all of these experiences, I continued to look up to my God for healing. As I said earlier on, I was brought up in a Christian family and I have a strong sense of the spirit of God residing in me. I was attending church regularly initially at Saint Saviours Anglican Church. My sister Uzo had joined a Pentecostal Church and she convinced me that my healing would be faster if I attended some of the Pentecostal Church Services. I went from one Pentecostal Church to another looking for a miracle of instant healing. The constant prayers helped me to cope better with my health problems but to be frank the symptoms and signs did not miraculously disappear. As the symptoms continued, I decided to return to my orthodox Anglican church. My ill-health continued and I began to really get frustrated. I was so unhappy I did not have the energy and enthusiasm to carry on with my business activities any longer. Everything became a chore and my productivity diminished. Since I was getting easily irritated, my staff was finding it difficult to cope with my frequent criticisms, my family was also not left out. They had to deal with a depressed, irritable mother and wife and they did not quite understand what was wrong. It was not a case of a definite disease, not asthma, not diabetes, not liver disease, not any of the disease they know about. They were all simply confused and did not know how to help something they could not understand. My husband and mum were very worried and insisted I travel abroad for medical treatment. I first travelled to Germany and after extensive tests, nothing abnormal was detected (NAD). I returned to Nigeria with some relief knowing that I was not about to die but the symptoms and signs persisted. I cannot now remember who introduced me to Dr. Rodney Adeniyi-Jones, a well-known orthodox practitioner who is also into integrative medicine. I travelled to UK consult him. Rodney is a brilliant Doctor and his compassion for his patient is almost palpable. He spent quite some time taking my history and he carried out full blood work-up and also carried out some other tests not normally done in orthodox medicine. These tests are not necessarily looking for a disease state. They are structured to detect metabolic dysfunctions in the body which may not have reached the stage of actual disease. Most of the orthodox tests were normal except that I had elevated SGOT & SGPT indicative of some liver dysfunctions. He also tested my body for toxic substances and he found out that even though I did not drink alcohol, my body had a high level of acetaldehyde and some other toxic substances which are by-products of yeast and fungus. These substances are very toxic and can damage the cells of any organ and lead to different types of unpleasant symptoms. Follow these simple tips if you never want to feel rushed again. other small accoutrements by style and weight. They ll be easy to see and select once you re dressed. PRE-PACK YOUR WORK BAG It s easy to forget something when you re hastily packing in the morning. Make sure your essentials are ready to roll, all neatly loaded in your work bag and purse. This includes your wallet, notebook, charger, dry snacks and makeup. Keep carryalls by the door so they re the last things you pick up before you re off for the day. PRIORITIZE SKINCARE ROUTINES IN THE EVENING The morning isn t the time for 15-minute face masks and multiple treatments. Reserve those for nighttime so you don t waste any time (they re most optimal during your beauty sleep, anyway). Keep products minimal with a go-to moisturizer, eye cream and SPF. HAVE A TRAVEL VERSION OF YOUR BEAUTY LOOK Your makeup routine should be as streamlined as your morning skincare regimen. A natural base, brows, mascara and a wash of lip colour is all you need. Stash them in a compact pouch and throw it in your work bag for touch-ups when needed. aduke shitta bey for prince meyson photography nars bronzer duo nars concealer beautyblender kevyn aucoin skin enhancer sigma beauty cover fx mineral foundation brush nars illuminator les beiges by chane With the darker of the two foundations, trace the temples. If you have a larger forehead, carry straight into the hairline to minimize it. To bring out your cheekbones, find the hollow part by placing your fingers on the sides of your face, and where you feel it dip underneath the bones, just above is where you place your pigment. With the nose, you can go a little bit narrower at the tip or you can carry it into the brow if you have a shorter nose to add length or width. Step 2: Blend it Take a damp beauty blender and tap over the area of the contour colour, merging it into your base foundation. Tap in small circular motions using the bigger, rounded end of the blender because it has more space. Step 3: Get lit Concentrate the lighter foundation stick underneath your eyes. If you want that extra glow, you can do a little bit in the center of the forehead and on the chin, and the bridge of the nose. Blend any excess product with a damp beauty blender. Step 4: Dust it With a fluffy brush, dust the entire face with loose powder. Translucent is best for securing a cream foundation. stay-comfortliquid-foundation ex1 inviswear liquid foundation fenty beauty skinstick loose powder
