Introduction I have to say I m very happy that 2013 is now behind us what a year it was! 2014 already is starting to look up; the January postal auction was very successful for both buyers and sellers, with interesting Lots in good condition and sensible reserves. Thank you to the vendors that sent Lots in early, this has helped greatly for me to get this issue out on time. The shop as well seems to be running smoothly, so all in all a pleasing start to the year. I am also delighted to see that the Swindon meeting is to be reinstated this year, please see the attached booking form for details etc. And for the next issue, once I have worked things out, I will have a date for our silver jubilee celebration party here in Cecil Court. Wishing you well, Daniel. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Communion Spoons In The Church Of Scotland By Kirkpatrick Dobie By the second half of 19 th century, the method of celebrating communion in the Church of Scotland had been influenced by the American method of serving the congregation, sitting in pews, which were covered with long narrow white cloths. The elements, bread and wine, are passed along the pews, the bread on plates, the wine on trays of individual glasses. Some congregations felt this was moving away from the Last Supper and continued to pass the communion cup along the pew with each person taking a Guid Draft (sic). A few congregations purchased spoons in sufficient numbers for each communicant member to take a spoonful of wine from the cup as it was passed along the pew, thereby avoiding any infection passed from using the common cup. The individual spoon sits on a clip, which also holds the pew cloth in position. Most of the churches using them, about twenty out of fifteen hundred congregations I have seen, have the name of the church engraved on the end of the spoon and sometimes also a cross. I have seen plain fiddle pattern teaspoons used but only in two churches. Of the others, eleven churches had long handled spoons with ovoid or round bowls. In one church the spoons were kept in a mahogany cabinet with four drawers, each holding thirty-six spoons as in cutlery drawers. I doubt that the spoons were made as Communion spoons, more likely they are standard types that were used for tall glasses. Indeed I have a very similar one with 'COUNTY HOTEL DUMFRIES' impressed on it. The hotel is long gone. Makers include Mappin & Webb, Joseph Elliot & Sons and Cooper Brothers & Son. Alas the common thread is that they are all E.P.N.S. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.3.

Launceston Spoons and Their Makers By Tim Kent F.S.A This old market town, the focal point of North Cornwall, adjacent to the Devon border, with its ancient and now ruinous castle echoing with medieval baronial history, was and is one of the halfdozen main Cornish towns. A free borough since the reign of Henry III ( ), it had been granted various charters and for a long time served as the Assize town for Cornwall, ultimately being replaced by Bodmin, site of the county gaol. Until this final change took place (1838) it was recorded that Cornwall is included in the Western circuit: the spring Assizes are held at Launceston, others at Bodmin, Easter quarter sessions at Truro. It was to Bodmin that I went as a neophyte circuiteer hoping to pick up a P.P.D. (Poor Prisoner s Defence) or a Dock Brief ( 2/4/6). At one time an extensive manufacture of Serges was carried on at Launceston but perhaps more significantly the town had regular fairs and market days centred on meat, corn and provisions, attracting the moderately prosperous yeoman farmers from a wide catchment area covering North Cornwall and bordering parts of Devon. As is often the case with towns of this type, local agriculturists would have had a little surplus cash in their pockets, sufficient to finance the acquisition of small pieces of silver, in particular spoons, the particular target of such customers, often as wedding or christening presents. In addition, at around 5/- per ounce these items could be traded in for cash if required. The earlier history of silversmithing at Launceston is obscure, but towards the end of the 17 th century two local spoon making workshops were doing good business with identifiable marks. Fig. 1 First we may take Francis Glanvill. According to the local researches of H L Douch the Glanvill family originated from Tavistock and were probably distant relatives of the eminent Judge of that name, whose magnificent tomb is to be seen in Tavistock parish church. At Launceston they became well established. Francis' grandfather John was mayor in 1607, his father Oliver in 1629 and 1639, and Francis himself in 1667 and Francis was twice married, first in 1659 to Sarah, daughter of the Rev. Richard Hancock of North Petherwin, and secondly in 1670 to Jane (neé Nichols) widow of Henry Hickes (d.1664), haberdasher of Launceston. Jane died in 1697 and the parish registers record the burial of Mr. Francis Glanvill, goldsmith, on 7th march 1697/8. Old Mr. Glanvill s will was made in 1695 and proved in 1698; it contains much family information. There can be little doubt about the marks used by Glanvill (Fig. 1). They appear on church plate.4.

at North Hill (adjacent to Launceston) and on a porringer dated The skull mark has no connection with the Mid-Wessex type. Furthermore the laceback decoration on Figure 1 is struck in the same dies as the pair by Mary Ash (Fig. 6). The sharing of dies by adjacent craftsmen was not uncommon - see for example the Sweet family. 6 To purchase a complete copy of the January/February 2014 (Vol. 24/03) issue for 7.50 please click here Fig. 5 This was presumably Granvill whose short life was to end the following December. Figure 3 is a very nice plain trefid, with guidelines visible, crowned L mark in bowl and twice on stem, accompanied by cinquefoil and dated 1689, probably an Ash workshop mark used immediately after Richard s death before Mary struck her own MA mark. Figure 4, another plain trefid, shows.6.

this mark. Figure 5 shows a really fine laceback dated 1693, in mint condition. It surfaced, in 1993 in Australia, without any known saleroom history, and I very much suspect that it went out to Tasmania (where Launceston is a major town) with a Cornish emigrant family, its condition is mint. Figure 6 show an attractive pair of lacebacks dated 1692 with Mary s mark, and it should be noted that they are struck in the same dies as those used by Francis Glanvill (Fig. 1). Fig. 6 (showing one of a pair) The Exeter Goldsmiths Company Minute book records that on 13 th November 1703 Mrs Mary Ashe of Launceston entered her marke number 25 AS : this was probably contained within a lobed punch, which has been noted on a Plymouth type caster, accompanied by the marks of Pentecost Symons of Plymouth (probably the maker) and Jacob Tyeth of Launceston (not a known spoonmaker). The will of Mary was proved at Exeter in Later in the century ( period) James Stevens, who had been apprenticed at Plymouth to Samuel Blachford, worked at Launceston and produced a fine caster in Blachford style but so far no spoons have been ascribed to him. 8 A Coronation Mark on Russian Silver Flatware? By Gordon Rodgers In the more accessible references about Russian silver marks, for the pre-kokoshnik imperial era (before 1899), one reads that three marks are the norm (maker; town/grade; assayer/year). Certain select silversmiths, with an Imperial Warrant, added a fourth mark, embodying the double-headed imperial eagle. Flatware marking and identification would thus seem a simple proposition. But not long ago, I had the opportunity to handle, examine and photograph a set of six fiddle pattern forks, which bore five marks! Made by the firm of Sazikov and assayed in 1856, the forks were rather tarnished, but in good condition; the marks quite blackened, with the detail not clearly visible. Nevertheless it was easy to make out four of the marks: Imperial Warrant; Sazikov; Assayer A.M./year 1856; St. Petersburg/ 84 Zlot s (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 The additional mark appeared to be that of a young woman s head in profile, rather like the duty mark for Queen Victoria on British silver. The owner claimed it to be very rare mark the Tsarina s head, which implied an imperial purchase (The forks were also engraved with a script monogram for M.T, in the usual place. These letters are used in both latin and cyrillic alphabets, and the absence of a crown or other adornment made me sceptical about his claim). This maker appears to have made principally small items, including flatware, and the estimated date of the spoon, c.1765, accords with the period of his working. The back of the bowl bears the contemporary Scottish family crest of the Mastertown family. The piece is 11.5cm long, and the slender handle terminating in a ram s horn, is reeded. All appears to be original with an excellent patina, although it is possible that the terminal was so formed later during the eighteenth century. I am certain that the piece is not a teaspoon, but what could it be? With it's Scottish family connection, could it be a form of Irish mash spoon, or could it be a blind mote spoon? Any suggestions would be gratefully received! -o-o-o-o-o-o-.9.

A Keswick School Of Industrial Arts Ladle By D.B. BELL This is a request for information or comment on this unusual, rare, possibly unique ladle. As can be seen from the hallmark it was assayed in Birmingham in From previous articles, it will be recalled that the Keswick School of Industrial Arts (KSIA) was founded By Canon Rawnsley and his wife Edith in At first most metal items produced by the school were made of copper but as the KSIA mark was first registered at the Birmingham Assay Office in 1896, it can be assumed that silver items began to be hand crafted in that year. 11 Feedback David Whitbread sends some feedback to Richard Stagg s article Queen Anne Hanoverian, (The Finial, Sep-Dec 2013, pages 4 & 5): I agree that Richard s 1709 York spoon must be a rarity. I don t recall seeing another. It also shows the provinces being quick to adopt new London fashions. As Richard suggests, 1708 is the earliest date I know for a Hanoverian spoon that I am confident is right. The few earlier examples I have come across have had rather flat terminals that lack the typical stem ridge, leading me to suspect they started life as Dognose or even Trefid spoons but had been trimmed to keep up with fashion, much as Hanoverian spoons were later to be turned to become Old English. Of course, if I am wrong about this and the very first Hanoverian spoons were indeed made without any stem ridge, I have missed the odd chance to acquire interesting examples of the pattern in its infancy. And the fact that I don t believe I have seen a proper Hanoverian spoon from earlier than 1708 does not mean one doesn t exist somewhere, so I hesitate to be too dogmatic about all this. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Piers Percival responds to Richard Stagg with an even earlier provincial Hanoverian from Ireland (The Finial Sep/Oct & Nov/Dec 2013, pages 4 & 5): It may be remembered that Charles I had granted the goldsmiths in Dublin their royal charter in The example shown is by DK for David King, a prominent generalist who gained freedom in 1690, was Warden and then elected Master of the Company. He died Note the long and elegant rattail, and slim stem of the spoon with the tip turned upwards in keeping with the fashion for spoons at table still to face downwards. The date letter is S for 1706/7 and the crowned harp is the King s stamp, of 1637, to signify sterling standard, there being no requirement for Britannia in Dublin. In passing, I might add that John Langwith, free 1699, was the son of the Clerk to the Vestry at York Minster and made a beautiful Apparitor s Mace 1606/7 for them, which is still in regular use. We have many features of interest at York and as a Minster guide I would always be pleased to welcome members if required, and provide that little extra on a personal tour. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Laurence Joyce s: Lot 50 in the new Finial (Vol. 24/01-02; Sep-Dec 2013) is attributed to John Sellars of Wick. However, from the photo of the marks JS, JS I'm certain that this teaspoon is by James Sturrock of Montrose. I have a pair of teaspoons with the same arrangement of marks. A forgivable mistake, but the Sturrock marks are distinctly different. There is a conical-tumbler shape to the serif on the bottom-left upstroke of the S and a swelling to the central stroke of the same letter. These characteristics are described in my Finial article some years back. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.11.

Kenneth Reid sends feedback to Richard Turner s article Scottish Provincial mark JMcI which appeared in Volumes 24/01 & 24/02, page 8: While Mr Turner was in no way suggesting that the gothic letter A which accompanied the maker s mark J.Mc.I (with pellets) was the same as those found with the marks of Alexander Grant and Charles Torchetti, the case was being made that the A signified the city of Aberdeen and this may indeed be true. Detailed photographic examination and comparison of the images of the A s used by J.Mc.I, Grant and Torchetti may not be necessary to conclude that the first illustrated mark, while similar to, is in fact different from that used by the two others. The position of the A within the punch used by J.Mc.I shows space to the left, above and below the A (Fig. 2 op. cit.) whereas that used by Grant and Torchetti shows the A fully occupying the space available right up to the edges of the punch (Figs. 5, 6 & 7 op. cit.). A fiddle pattern dessert spoon in my possession by Alexander Grant has marks (Figs. 1 & 2) similar to those previously illustrated in Richard Turner s article; here a space between the top of the letter and the edge of the punch is clear to see. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 In his book Aberdeen Silver A Collector s Guide, Michael J Wilson suggests that Grant and Torchetti were in Aberdeen at the same time and that they either worked together or, as may be more likely, Torchetti, operating as a retailer within the city, bought in silver made by Grant and applied his own CT mark. Grant is recorded as having been a goldsmith and jeweller. Mr Turner and those of us who can become excited by unusual marks used in the Scottish burghs may be interested in the images below (Figs. 3 & 4); the most likely candidate for this maker s mark is William Jamieson, a prolific Aberdeen silversmith. Wilson mentions that Jamieson took at least seventeen apprentices, but unfortunately none is named. He also shows several examples of marks used by William Jamieson, but none is like the marks below. Fig. 3 Fig. 4 While I am looking forward to obtaining a copy of Richard Turner s new illustrated directory, I assume that he too has not recorded these marks, otherwise he might have drawn attention to them. The marks appear on a fiddle pattern mustard spoon which, given the considerable quantity of flatware that Jamieson produced, might be thought of as insignificant. Yet these marks may be unrecorded. This gothic A looks remarkably like that used by Grant/Torchetti, occupying the whole punch and illustrated in the original article. The evidence may not be entirely conclusive, but perhaps we may be able to have a little more confidence in thinking that J.Mc.I worked or had a retail outlet in Aberdeen. I for one have always been sceptical, and remain so, about thinking that J.Mc.I and JmcI (of Fochabers) were punches of the same maker. That a silversmith should work in more than one centre is not uncommon, for example William Byres Banff/Aberdeen, William Ferguson Peterhead/Elgin, or Thomas Stewart Elgin/Inverness, but each of these used his same maker s punch in different locations. I have no practical experience to know whether spacing around letters is an artefact of the way the punches were struck or angled or how this may have changed throughout the whole period of use of a punch. Until someone can enlighten me, I assume the differences mentioned above result from the use of different punches. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.12.

Alan Kelsey writes: At the age of 80 I must be the oldest living silver spoon maker having been apprenticed at the Goldsmiths Hall in 1948 as a silver spoon and fork maker. I worked at C.J. Vanders for nearly 50 years using the dies and tools passed down the trade from Higgins, Chawners and other firms. Many people seem to think that silversmithing is one trade where in fact it is made up of many trades all working with silver. At Vanders we made most of the patterns shown in Ian Pickford s book Silver Flatware, English, Irish and Scottish and were the only London spoon making firm from 1948 to 1997 making these old patterns. In 1997 we were all made redundant when C.J. Vanders were sold to an American firm. Most of the London silversmithing firms have now closed so it s back to sheds and small workshops for all types of silversmiths. With reference to Paul Holmes article on the Friday Afternoon Spoons (The Finial, Sep/Dec 2013, page 3), as a spoonmaker many years ago I made spoons using old dies hand forging the spoons and then knocking on the heels and heads with a hammer and die, not easy, be it Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Most spoon makers would have been piece workers, being paid for making the spoons at a fixed price, and if there was no work no payment at all. Many people seem to have a very romantic view of what it was like to be a silversmith or spoon maker in the past; ordinary men who did most of the work get no mention in books or articles. Does any member know anything about the solid gold service, Chased Pierced Vine pattern, made for the Australian Government in 1900 for their centenary? When I was apprenticed the oldest men would talk about this service made at Higgins by their fathers. I have asked the Goldsmiths Hall and Australia House with no success. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Lionel Clarke has asked if anyone is able to help him identify these three spoons and their makers. The first is a bottom marked Onslow pattern spoon with only maker s mark I.L A. The second, a Celtic-point pattern with the marks of JS D & STERLING and finally a Hanoverian pattern bottom marked spoon with marks as in the last picture!.13.

Jolyon Warwick James responds to Alex Olivares request (The Final, Sep-Dec 13, page 12): Whatever the resolution to your spoon s marks ( IT twice on the handle and once in the bowl) the similarities with the mark of John Tanner ( ) of Rhode Island might be noted. If VA and TN lived long enough to celebrate their golden wedding then they might have pricked their initials and date of marriage - so the spoon might conceivably postdate o-o-o-o-o-o- Peter Beebe informs: With reference to Lot 17 (The Finial, Mar/Apr 13, Vol. 23/04, page 16), an Ashton-U-Lyne Golf Club teaspoon by K LTD, I assume you don t know the maker (that is a correct assumption Ed). Bonhams Edinburgh are holding their The Scottish Sale on the earlier dates of Tuesday and Wednesday 15 th and 16 th April The silver is being sold on the second day of this two-day sale. Following on from my notification of this event in the last edition of The Finial, I have been given initial information regarding some rare items to be included:- A late 17 th century Aberdeen Trefid spoon by Alexander Galloway, with engraved initials RP on the reverse of the trefid terminal and MB on the reverse of the bowl and acanthus decoration. Marked - indistinct mark, AG (possibly), AG, zig-zag assay scrape. Estimate This is a very rare spoon! Probably matching the example exhibited at Aberdeen Museum s 2012/13 exhibition. Ref. Est Robert Elphinstone of Inverness. Est William Scott of Banff. Est The earliest known Edinburgh coconut cup. A rare silver-mounted coconut cup, with engraved inscriptions and decorated with tulips. Made by Andrew Dennistoun, Edinburgh, with assay master s mark of Jon Scott, circa Scott only served as assay master for two years, , and so this established the date for the cup. It would appear that this may well be the cup featured in Scottish Gold and Silver Work by Ian Finlay. What a rare item this is, having some good highland provenance. Est. 10,000-20,000.
