Introduction As I was adding the volume number to this issue s cover, it dawned on me that we have just entered into The Finial s 28 th year of publication. Had anyone said to me fifteen years ago, when I still had dark brown hair, that The Finial would not only still be going but in fact getting more popular than ever before, I would have been astonished. We have had a nice influx of new members recently, young and old, from many parts of the world and of course from here in the United Kingdom. And if you know of a friend, family member or colleague that could also have an interest in antique silver spoons, please do tell them about us, or maybe with Christmas around the corner The Finial would make a very good present. Now that the closing date has passed for the public consultation for views on British hallmarks being applied overseas, or at least having a different mark to identify where an item is hallmarked, lets keep our fingers crossed for future generations that the British Hallmarking Council comes to the right decision. As November and December is a very busy time for me here in the shop, and that the postal auction for that issue is usually quite extensive, I would be grateful to have your Lots in sooner rather than later, if possible. Many thanks, Daniel. -o-o-o-o-o-o- New Book Artists Spoons & Related Table Cutlery A British History Of Arts & Crafts Flatware By Simon Moore Simon is kindly offering members his new book at a discounted price of 50 plus postage. 4 A Knight With Shining Silver Sir James D. Marwick By Luke Delmas Heraldic engraving on silver opens up another dimension of study beyond an assessment of an article s quality or rarity. Indeed, research into the previous owners of a piece provides a great opportunity to explore the context of the article in a given time and place and the chance to learn about an area of history that one would otherwise not have engaged with. I have recently handled an hourglass pattern table fork and mustard spoon (Fig. 1), which both bear London hallmarks for 1889 and the maker s mark of John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater. Both items are engraved on the front with a boar passant above a knight s helm strongly suggesting that they were commissioned by Sir James Marwick (vide infra) 1,2. Both pieces are double-struck and of considerable gauge; the fork and spoon weigh 100g and 35g, respectively. 7 Feedback Eleni Bide, the Goldsmiths Company librarian, remarks: In his article A Sun in Splendour Indisputably Dingwall? Part II (vol. 27/06), Kenneth Reid mentions notes made by Martin Gubbins, which accompanied a spoon sold at Bonhams. Some readers may not be aware that the Goldsmiths Company Library holds a small collection of Martin s papers, kindly given to us by his estate. They are not indexed, but researchers who would like to go through them are very welcome to get in touch. The.Library@thegoldsmiths.co.uk -o-o-o-o-o-o- Kirkpatrick Dobie corrects the article on the AR marks by K.J. Reid, page 6, 3 rd paragraph, (The Finial Jul/Aug 17), advising us that he wrote and published the booklet on Dumfries Silversmiths. Nothing to do with the museum, but they were very supportive and do have a very good collection of Dumfries silver. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Charles Kewin writes: I was and am greatly saddened to read in the May/June Finial of Alan Kelsey s passing. Truly, we shall not see his like again. David Whitbread has written a fine obituary, but I would like to add my own tribute to the memory of that master of his craft. In the late 1990s while working in Ethiopia I chanced upon a heavy table fork in a junk shop in Addis Ababa: hallmarked 1955, Asprey, Marie pattern; and engraved with the imperial monogram of Haile Selassie. He had been overthrown in the 1974 revolution and this was clearly a survivor of the looting of the palaces. Wanting to find out more, I wrote to Aspreys but without success. A note on the subject in the June/July 2000 Finial resulted in a very informative letter from Alan, saying he had helped make for Aspreys another service for Haile Selassie (Coburg pattern, not Marie). That State Service for 150 persons comprised 3261 pieces, and included 450 table knives and forks, plus 300 each of dessert forks, spoons, cheese knives, fish eaters, dessert eaters Deleted from the schedule were 150 orange spoons, 18 chutney spoons, 18 pickle forks. 150 asparagus eaters and 18 asparagus tongs, plus 150 pairs of hors d oeuvre eaters and 18 pairs of sugar tongs! I know a bit about Ethiopian banquets main dish, raw beef so I can understand those deletions. Over the next 10 years we had a substantial correspondence, and I was the fortunate recipient of a lot of information and photographs from Alan s archives. He also made my children silver paper knives (to his own pattern) and for me, a pickle fork and a mashing spoon (not masking spoon) all, of course, marked GAK. I always intended to attend one of the Silver Spoon Club annual gatherings and meet Alan in person (and thank him for his kindness) and now it s too late. My loss. I wonder what will become of his collection of tools, dies and archive material. It is to be hoped that his family will find an appropriate museum to preserve all that knowledge and craft equipment for the future. It is not often that we have the privilege of having contact with a great man from the past era I count myself lucky and will remember him. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.7.

Darrell Hamley jots: I was much amused by the article by Charles Spencer (The Finial, Jul/Aug 17, pages 12 & 13), and delighted to find another addict for G.A collecting. I now have 100 plus different patterns, many thanks to Finial auctions. The Spencers seek opinions for which patterns should be designated Ladies or Gents. Why Napier should be among the Ladies I cannot imagine. He was a famous General in India during the many wars in Victoria's reign. Indeed, if you wander from Cecil Court to Trafalgar Square you will find a fine statue to him on a plinth in the Southwest corner. Good luck to the Spencers!. Am busy going through many spoons deciding on whether they are table or tea! A fine Finial as usual. Many thanks. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Anne Graham comments: What a splendid project Charles Spencer has set himself with the Harlequin canteen. I suppose Rose, the obvious contender for the Ladies Team has been disqualified as it is not a Chawner pattern. Princess No. 2 is very delicate or Scroll Rosette with leaf work heel. However surely Napier and Palm bat for the Gentlemen, the former with its military connections and the latter evocative of African explorers. I hope we will be updated with progress reports. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Michael Bodden responds to Charles Spencer s article, A Harlequin Canteen (The Finial, Jul/Aug 17, pages 12 & 13): I am pleased my article of November/December 2015 proved encouraging: I guess you were ready to get going! I think your idea of a harlequin canteen opens the way to hours of interest with guaranteed satisfaction, if my experiences are any guide. I completed the Grecian canteen and handed it over last year and my younger Millennial grand-daughter will receive her Albert canteen on January 1st Your enterprise prompts me to offer the following thoughts. A full table with each place a different setting, as you will have, suggests that you will need to consider the presence of each. For example, King s Husk, which I really like, is quite strong compared to Old English Bead. Queens, because of the centre element on the stem, is fuller than Kings. The terminal of Lily seems to harmonise with Elizabethan so they fit nicely. Grecian is much more pointy and probably needs to be at the other end of the table! It obviously comes down to your preference but the issue of availability cannot be ignored if a timely result is desirable. I think that Pickford s advice on availability has not been improved by the 35 years or so since Silver Flatware was first published. Even so I could not resist buying examples of the rare and scarce because I felt I had plenty of time. Thus I bought an Old England tablespoon, in good order. I have only seen one further example, a mustard spoon! I have a half-dozen Scroll Rosette forks still awaiting worthwhile companions. This is a pity because you might have chosen it as another male pattern. I think you have some great candidates for the remaining ladies choices though you might care to look at Napier anew it s a bit old sea-dog to my eyes. Rose might be worth a thought. I could go with Tudor as another masculine option. From the Fiddle family its Fiddle Thread & Shell that wins the day - and sits comfortably with Kings and Queens as it shares the Shell element. I respect your idea to stay with George Adams (Chawner & Co) because it sets a constraint on the search; I will however observe that there are other great makers so don t pass a really good item that cries out to join you! Good luck with the quest. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.8.

Mark Nevard sends a few feedback thoughts on the July/August edition of The Finial: Charles Spencer would do better not to start any new rare pattern with a tablespoon or table fork. These are the more available items; better to wait until you locate an example of the harder to find dessert fork before you set forth on a new pattern. I am also a little surprised at banning engraved pieces while requiring only first quality. This is virtually a contradiction as almost all canteens of the 19 th century, the period which I assume is expected to furnish the bulk of his canteen, will have been engraved so any un-engraved pieces will almost certainly have had the work erased, making it below first quality to many eyes. However, good luck to him; I hope he is a young man. He might just find it easier to start with some of the more available patterns to achieve his twelve different place settings, disposing of these one by one as his rarer patterns are completed. The position of the lions passant on Luke Delmas tablespoons is indeed unusual, thank goodness. A deeply struck punch extending across the full width of the stem is a perfect recipe for a stress induced crack, possibly the reason extant examples are so rare. It is relevant to notice that in this case the punch is offset, fortunately leaving one side of the stem to carry the load, giving at least some relief. I have no doubt that David McKinley s mote spoon is fraudulent for the various reasons he advances, but I m not quite sure why he assumes it to be a cut down dessert spoon. Given the close spacing of the marks well fitting the shape of the stem could this item not have started life as a fake mote spoon? As he queries, why put in the work to convert a fake spoon when the same work on a genuine larger piece would give a more saleable item? Finally, yes, we must all do our bit in writing to the Hallmarking Council to express our views on the undermining of the British hallmarking system. -o-o-o-o-o-o- A member has asked for any help in identifying the maker of this Hanoverian pattern tablespoon. Apart from the Scottish crest of crossed laurel branches and motto, Virtus semper viridis, there are only three G.T marks on it. -o-o-o-o-o-o-.9.

David McKinley s: Having read Richard Turner's article Dessert Spoons vs Teaspoons in the July/August 2017 issue of The Finial (page 8) I think it appropriate for me to remind readers of the research on this subject carried out by Chris Bell, Tony Dove and me some ten or twelve years ago. Firstly Richard states that In 1822, the stub came in and I am afraid he is mislead in this. The word stub was first used in 1786 by the Company s engraver, John Pingo, in one of the many letters he wrote to the Company, to describe the punch carrying multiple marks for use in the fly press. Although, to the best of my knowledge, his father, Thomas Pingo, didn t use the term he did introduce the fly press, which was used for marking salvers, plates and waiters from 1757 so strictly speaking it was in 1757 that the stub came in. It was not used for marking spoons, forks and other small flatware until According to the mark register at Goldsmiths Hall double marks, that is marks applied by a hand held punch with two marks engraved on its head instead of the usual one, were introduced in 1781 and took the form of the duty mark followed by the lion. The mark register is specific in dictating what sort of plate various marks were to be used on so that, for instance, for 1791 the register reads: Treble marks for tea tongs (duty, lion, date), ditto upright marks for experiment. The first time these experimental upright marks were used on spoons was in 1805 when large spoons were marked in this way. Teaspoons were still being marked with the triple mark stub (lion, date, duty) but they too were marked with the upright mark in 1810 with the lion at the top of the sequence. The leopard's head was first added to this sequence for marking teaspoons in In that year the Company s engraver, by now John Smith, was instructed to make experimental punches as well as the usual ones. This experiment consisted of removing the leopard s crown on all marks and enclosing the lion in an oval cartouche for large spoons. The Company very soon approved the new marks and the uncrowned leopard was adopted so that in 1821 there are two forms of hallmark, one with the crowned leopard and one with the uncrowned leopard, and both are legitimate. Although I have said that the mark register was specific about what sort of plate should be marked with what sort of punch or stub this is not foolproof. No directive was given concerning the marking of ladles and sugar sifters so that, as Richard points out, these can be found marked either as for large spoons or for teaspoons. Both forms of marking are legitimate on these items. For more comprehensive information on this subject back issues of The Finial must be consulted. -o-o-o-o-o-o- Paul Dudley is looking for help with an identification of a maker: I have recently purchased a pair of very interesting rattail tablespoons, they have five hallmarks, all rubbed except the maker s mark. I think the date letter is gothic F for Newcastle 1707 and the makers mark is Ma over Ca. They are really well made; 8" long with a nice ridge down the front, can anyone help with identification?.10.

Review Lyon & Turnbull Sale of Scottish Silver Edinburgh 16 th August 2017 Report by Mr M. There was a good selection of over a hundred lots of provincial silver offered at this sale. The majority of the flatware was in good condition. As I would like to make comment on just a few items members may like to look at L&T s web site if there is any particular spoons that may interest them. Lot Perth A Hanoverian pattern tablespoon with deep bowl, marked IB, armorial shield twice, FB, the reverse of the terminal engraved WF/ SG, with double drop heel and beaded and engraved fleur de lys rattail, length 20.1cm, weight 59.5g a rare spoon! I believe that this spoon is from a set of seven that were sold at Sotheby s sale at Gleneagles in August 1986, when it was then catalogued as Inverness. It was in good overall condition. What a price it attained! 6,500 (including premium) against an estimate of 800-1,000. The reason for this I would suggest is because of the quartered armorial shield punch mark. May I spend some time talking about the IB, armorial shield and FB mark on the above spoon, Ref. Old Jackson page 548, listing of Inverness silversmiths. Also I would ask members to refer to the notes for Lot 322 in L&T s catalogue. In an article titled Silver under Scrutiny in 'The Antique Dealer and Collectors Guide, August 1970, there was a section about Scottish Provincial Silver by a Scottish dealer. It was stated there, that lines 7 and 8 of the Inverness listing in old Jackson s, page 548, were not Scottish. Unfortunately there was no mention as to what they may be. I first encountered this mark along with a further mark of an A on its side, on twelve forks that were sold from the David Morris collection at Christies Scotland in Glasgow, July 1984, being catalogued as Inverness silver. Reference old Jackson s, page

Two years later the set of seven spoons appeared at Sotheby s sale at Gleneagles in August 1986, also catalogued as Inverness. The one thing that was good about these spoons were their probable provenance from the north east of Scotland, being made for the wedding of a William Fraser to Sophia Gordon. When the new Ian Pickford 1989 edition of Jackson s was printed there was no mention of these marks for Inverness, however there was mention of James Brown working in Perth in It was around this time that my thoughts were looking towards as to what the armorial shield punch mark may be. Considering the provenance of these spoons and the possible connection of Elgin as being associated to this mark, it made me think of other possible places that these spoons may have been made. Looking at the armorial shield it appears to be very similar to the quartered shield of the family name Fraser and possibly the town of Fraserbrough. Included in the 2008 Exhibition Silver Made in Scotland there were two spoons exhibited, probably from the seven sold by Sotheby s in In the catalogue notes about these spoons there was mention of a possible connection with Elgin and Fraserburgh. Ref: cat, page 115, No It is recorded that James Brown did work in Perth but did not use the Perth double eagle headed punch mark. Could the reason be for this that he was a transient silversmith working wherever he could find work. When working in Perth he did use a punch of the town name (PERTH). I would suggest that James Brown may have moved to the north east, with his son Francis, when work came available for them in that area. When working in the north east it could be suggested that they wanted some way of marking their silver at that time with a mark that could be associated with that area. A punch that closely represented family Fraser or Fraserburgh s town seal would be a good choice. The price paid for the spoon at this sale may suggest that the bidders may have similar thoughts about this mark? There still requires further research to be carried out! Lot Edinburgh A rare William III Dognose Spoon, 1696, by Thomas Ker, engraved initials M/AG/IL, the large bowl with reeded rattail, length: 18.9cm, weight 52.4g another rare early spoon. I noted that the bowl was slightly worn and that the marks were readable but not as clear as the matching spoon sold in the same rooms in However, that did not deter the bidding going to above estimate at 9,375 (including premium), over double the price attained by the matching spoon when it was sold. Conclusion Another good sale of Burgh (provincial) silver and also a good selection of Edinburgh and Glasgow silver..13.
