Thank you for booking Portals to the Past. All the information in these documents is the property of Portals to the Past. Please do not publish on your school website. In this PDF are dressing up ideas for making costumes and accessories for your workshop, which can be as simple or adventurous as the children like. We would recommend that you show the children the instructions and let them make these costumes at home. The results can be quite amazing. You will also find worksheets to use in class as you wish. These are not required for the workshop. It would be helpful if any assemblies planned for the day could be cancelled. Your workshop leader will arrive by 8.00am to set up. The quiz sheet will be handed to you on arrival. Please photocopy 1 per child. The school hall and the children s classrooms will be needed in the morning. Desktops in the classroom will need to be cleared so activities can be set up. For the afternoon only the school hall will be required. The order of the presentation can be adjusted to suit your facilities. Pencils will be required for some activities in the morning. Any weapons must be made from cardboard or foam. MEMENTO SAXON COINS are available from our website. They are 1 each + postage. If you require them for the children on the day of the workshop, please order a week or so in advance of the date.

ANGLO-SAXON BOYS NAMES A Seax is the Saxon name for a knife. It can be short or long. Make yourself a SEAX from cardboard, no longer than 25 cms. Choose a Saxon name and write it on your Seax. Write your Saxon name on your girdle hanger and attach your belt on a long piece of cord or string. to

DRESSING AS SAXON WARRIORS This is a group of Saxon Warriors. These were incredibly rich men. They are wearing straight legged trousers in bright colours. Underneath the chain mail, they are wearing tunics. All you need is an adult size T shirt in a bright colour. Wear a belt around your waist. Attach your seax with your name on it to the belt. Wear a cloak. Chain mail can be made from onion bags sprayed silver. You can get onion bags from supermarkets or your local greengrocers.

SHEILDS Saxon shields can be round or kite shields. You will need a LARGE Circle of thick, strong cardboard. A long strip of strong cardboard and a round Yoghurt Pot. Some long split pins and paint. Sticky tape to cover the split pins. Paint the yoghurt pot silver or grey. Cut a hole, slightly smaller than your yoghurt pot in the back of your shield. Paint your shield either plain colour or with designs. Push the yoghurt pot through the back of the shield to act as a shield boss to protect your hand. Attach the long strip of cardboard across the middle of your shield, over the hole with the yoghurt pot in it, with the split pins. Cover the ends of the split pins with tape or plaster. A kite shield covers from your chest to just below your knees.

SAXON HELMETS Saxon warriors would have been wearing this type of helmet at the Battle of Hastings; it s called a conical helm. To make a Saxon Helmet, you will need to measure around your head very carefully. Remember to write this measurement down. Then measure from the middle of your forehead over the top your head and from ear to ear. Using thin cardboard make a frame or cradle this size. Line your helmet with thin card and paint silver. Put a nasal or nose guard on your helmet. These are copies of 6 th century Saxon Helmets. This is the Sutton Hoo helmet found in the boat burial of King Raedwald.

Dressing as Saxon Girls You will need a long underdress. Make a peplos from an old sheet. Look at the photo of the Saxon Women. Make your Saxon brooches and pin your peplos on your shoulders. Wear a belt around your middle. Hang your girdle hangers from the belt. Wear a cloak in winter. Make your girdle hangers from cardboard and paint silver or grey. Write your Saxon name on them. Saxon Brooches were usually round. Make two disc s of card. Decorate with pasta shapes. Paint silver or grey, or draw a design on the discs. Secure a large safety pin on the back of the brooch. String some beads between the brooches. Pin to your dress on the shoulders.

SAXON KNOTWORK PATTERN This is a Saxon Knot work picture for you to colour in. There are two knots. Use two colours and follow each knot around.

Name... Alfred the Great Read the following, and then answer the questions on the next page. Alfred was born in 849 AD. His father, Ethelwulf, was King of Wessex, the kingdom of the West Saxons. Alfred was the youngest of five sons. As a child, his father took him on a pilgrimage to Rome, to meet the Pope, who was his Godfather. Alfred became King of Wessex when he was 24 years old. England, at this time was always being attacked by the Danes. Eventually, the Saxon Army was pushed in to Somerset and Alfred fled to Althelney, an island in the middle of the Somerset Marshes. Alfred gathered troops and conducted a guerrilla war against the Danes. The Saxons beat the Danes at the Battle of Edington in 878 AD. Alfred and the Danish leader, Guthrum made peace. This is called the Treaty of Wedmore. They agreed to split England in two. The north and East were under Danish rule and was called the Danelaw. The West and South were under Saxon rule. Guthrum became a Christian and changed his name to Athelstan. He moved to his base at Hadleigh in Suffolk, where he is said to be buried. Alfred built up fortified towns all around Southern England called burhs. He formed a navy for use against the Danes, who were still raiding the Saxons, and strengthened the Army. King Alfred believed in justice, and introduced many good laws. He believed in education, and that everybody should be able to read. His court attracted many clever men from all over Europe. Alfred translated many books from Latin to English. The leaders of many English and Welsh tribes united under Alfred. Alfred was known as King of the English, and is the only English King ever to be called Great. He died in 899AD.

Guthrum was the leader of the 8. Alfred and Guthrum made a treaty called the. 9. What is a fortified town called? 11. Who united under Alfred? 12. Alfred is the only English King ever to be called Great. Give reasons, why you think he got that name.
