Indeed, Frauke is one of the few people with the enduring history and close association with the Argyle mine, and has been invited to view and sometimes acquired the rarest of diamonds from our mine. This catalogue is a celebration of Argyle diamonds from their warm champagne hues to their rare and vivid pinks and it is also a testament to Frauke s vivacity and spirit. 34 DIAMOND QUALITY & VALUE anything extremely rare is also precious Diamonds, formed billions of years ago are judged by four distinct factors that combine in a number of ways to arrive at its value. These are called the 4 C s - Colour, Carat, Cut, and Clarity. Carat As with all precious stones, the weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. The word carat originated in a natural unit of weight: the seeds of the carob tree. Diamonds were traditionally weighed against these seeds until the system was standardised and one carat was fixed at 0.2 grams (one fifth of a gram). One carat is divided into 100 points so that a diamond of 25 points is described as quarter of a carat or 0.25 carats. Clarity Almost all diamonds contain minute traces of non-crystallized carbon or small non-diamond crystals. Most are not discernible to the naked eye and require magnification to become apparent. Called inclusions, they are nature s finger print and make every diamond quite unique. However, the fewer there are, the rarer the stone will be. Argyle pink diamonds are rare; beyond rare. In fact, less than one tenth of 1% of Argyle s diamond production is pink. With just an estimated decade of supply remaining in the mine, as time passes the Argyle pink diamonds become evermore precious. A pink diamond is substantially more valuable than its white diamond equivalent. Argyle supplies approximately ninety percent of the world s pink diamonds and is the only reliable source of intense pink diamonds a whole year s worth of production of stones over half a carat would fit into the palm of your hand. The Cut Of all the 4C s, cut is the one most directly influenced by man. The precision and delicacy with which your diamond is cut will dramatically influence its fire and sparkle, for it is the polisher s skill that releases its beauty.
