Agate is the oldest stone in recorded history and has been used in jewelry since biblical Babylonian times. Rose Quartz, dubbed the blushing gemstone, is one of the most desirable varieties of quartz. The unique pink-to-rose-red color is caused by iron and titanium impurities in the natural stone. The word quartz is derived from the German word Quarz and is the second most common mineral in the Earth s continental crust. Coral is among the most ancient of gemstone materials. It is not actually a stone, but rather the calcified structures of once living tiny marine animals called polyps, whose habitat resembles tree branches. Coral ranges in color from white to red, is found in seabeds ranging from 20 to 1,000 feet in depth, and is becoming increasingly more valuable and harder to find as our reefs begin to shrink due to pollution. Silver from around the World Sterling silver refers to items that contain at least 92.5 percent of pure silver and 7.5 percent of copper or other metal alloy, hence sterling silver generally stamped with the number 925. Sterling will patina in time and require regular polishing. Bali ilver refers to exquisitely detailed beads that are handmade in Bali, Indonesia. The silver content of Bali beads is 92.5 percent, which qualifies them as being defined as Sterling. Turkish ilver distinguishes itself not in design, but in the composition of the silver alloy being used. Turkish ilver makes use of a silver and cadmium alloy. Cadmium is lighter than copper and is slightly more tarnish resistant. Hill Tribe ilver comes from the remote mountains of Thailand using centuries-old traditional methods. Hill Tribe silver contains a higher percentage of silver than sterling (95- to 99- percent purity) that makes it much softer and brighter, buy slower to tarnish. Since each bead is created individually by hand, there will be slight variances in size and shape from one bead to another. Heshi means shell, once referring to pieces of shell that were drilled, hand rolled or ground into beads and strung on necklaces. First originated with the native peoples of New Mexico, Heshi beads are created from a variety of materials including stone, shell, wood and metal.
