1 Native Americans On the the North American Content Map of Hopi Land The Hopi Indians lived in the southwest dessert are of Arizona Hopi Homes were made of adobe (clay and straw) Each home housed one family Ladders were used to reach different levels Native American Indians 1
2 Clothing Men wore breech cloth or kilts Women wore knee length cotton dresses Both wore moccasins A band of cloth was worn around the head by men Hair Men wore in a figure 8 shape bun Unmarried women wore butterfly whorls. Married women wore pigtails Food Farming people- grew corn, beans, squash Men hunted deer, antelope and small game. Used bow and arrows to hunt. Women gathered nuts, fruits, and herbs. 3 Inuits Live in the Northwest Territories Alaska tundra In the winter, Inuits lived in houses made from blocks of ice called igloos. Inuit Homes In the summer, Inuits lived in tent huts made from animal skins More than one family lived in each home. Native American Indians 3
4 Clothing Clothing was made from animal skin in effort to keep warm Boots were made from animal skins Parkas made out of fur were worn as an outside layer for warmth Food Since plants do not grow well in the icy tundra Inuits mainly ate meat. The diet consisted of whales, walrus, seals, and fish Travel Inuits traveled by sleds pulled by dogs Native American Indians 4
5 Kwakiutl Pacific Northwest Kwakiutl Homes Lived in rectangular cedar plank houses. These houses have bark roofs As many as 50 people lived in each house Clothing During the summer, men wore no clothes or breech cloths and women wore short skirts made from cedar bark In colder weather, men and women wore knee length tunics made from shredded bark Native American Indians 5
6 Hair Women wore their hair long and loose Men wore hair coiled into a top knot. Men wore mustaches and beards. For head wear, men wore, basketry hats. Food Hunted animals such as black bear and wolves with bow and arrows. They also ate many types of fish, seal, crab, clams and fish from the ocean. Transportation The Kwakiutl tribe used dug out canoes for transportation. Native American Indians 6
7 Nez Perce Plateau Indians Nez Perce Homes This tribe lived in dugout earth homes. These were underground homes that were covered with earth, cedar, bark or tule. Round houses were for one family. Long houses held dozens of families. Nez Perce Clothing Women wore long deer skin dresses. Men wore a breech cloth with leather leggings Some clothes were decorated with beads Both men and women wore moccasins Native American Indians 7
8 Hair Both women and men wore their hair long Some men wore pompadour hairstyles In this tribe men did wear feather head bands Women wore basketry hats Sometimes wore face paint Food Men supplied food by fishing and hunting. Salmon, deer, and elk were often eaten. Women gathered roots, nuts, and seeds. Transportation Nez Perce used dug out canoes. Also used dog pulling travois. Native American Indians 8
9 Pawnee Plains Indians Pawnee Homes Originally, the Pawnee lived in the states of Nebraska and Kansas Pawnee lived in earthen lodges Clothing Women wore deerskin skirts with pancho like blouses. Men wore breech cloths with leather leggings. Some clothing had bead work. Native American Indians 9
10 Some leaders wore the long Native Hair American headdress Pawnee men shaved their heads except for a scalp lock and wore a porcupine roach on top. Pawnee women wore their hair loose or braided They sometimes painted their faces for Food The Pawnee were farming people Pawnee women raised crops of corn, beans, squash and sunflowers. Pawnee men hunted buffalo and antelopes Transportation Pawnee did not use boats for transportation because they did not live near the ocean. Pawnee did use travois pulled by dogs. Horse were used after the colonist brought them from Europe. Native American Indians 10
11 Seminole Indians Southeast Seminole Homes Lived in houses called chickees. They were made of wood and plaster and roof is made of thatch palmetto fiber. Seminoles lived in large villages Men wore breech cloths Clothing Women wore wrap around skirts made out of palmetto. They both wore moccasins The men usual wore shave heads except for a scalp lock. Sometimes they wore porcupine roach They did not paint their Native American Indians 11
