1 Parking at WASA meetings We can park off the street without fear of a parking fine. Thanks to Le Pine Funerals we may use their customer carpark. It is in Linsley St south of the library and the gate is never closed. 9 pages March 2018 Issue 75 Next Members' Meeting March 20th Tuesday evening Upstairs in the meeting room at Box Hill Library 7.15pm for 7.30pm start: 1040 Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill A G M and Travel to Antarctica with Karin McKee THE AGM will be brief and the 2017 financial reports will be discussed plus an overview of the year. A copy of the 2017 financial reports are attached and in summary WASA made a $2020 profit and we held at $19809 cash in the bank. WASA will need new people for Council in 2019/20 and we really hope you will consider what you can do to help. If there aren't enough people to run the Society we may need to plan a measured close-down in the not too distant future which needs to be discussed. Karin travelled to Antarctica in November 2017 and has interesting tales and great photos to share with us plus information about the logistics of the trip in case you're thinking of taking a Big Trip there. WASA 2018 subscription renewal is overdue for renewal. This year we won't give you an reminder, if you've forgotten to pay so if you'd like to continue as a member you do need to pay. $70 exhibiting, $40 non-exhibiting, junior $22.50 Cheques payable to be Wildlife Art Society of Australasia - not WASA If you would like a new WASA membership card please let us know. Apparently the WASA website isn't getting many visitors at the moment as it seems most people follow us on Facebook. Can everyone please visit the WASA website for a minute now and then. This may help keep our domain provider happy and maintain the low charge rate the society is paying. Page 1 of 9 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

She will show how to use your blender, the different pencils for resist methods and different erasers. Then she will show how to create a few different textures with ease, including bark texture, feathers, fur, stones and shiny surfaces. Then we will all do our own drawing using the specimens supplied or which you have brought along to draw and share. 3 Raptor free-flight and photographic encounter with LEIGH VALLEY HAWK AND OWL SANCTUARY Saturday May 12 th at Garibaldi Hall, Hardies Hill Rd, Garibaldi which is south of Ballarat 200 mtrs from corner on right hand side) Event for 1 hour + Up to 4 birds (depending on species & who can fit safely in the van) This event is weather permitting and will be confirmed the preceding week by and on WASA Noticeboard Facebook page. The location lends itself to a BYO picnic lunch with plenty of photographic opportunities and chat with Martin about the birds. Cost $30 per person and partners are very welcome. Price will reduce if there are enough people to cover the cost and a partial refund will be given to those who have already paid. To book please Kris wasakp@optusnet.com.au before 1 st April Our next Paint and Sketch Saturday morning March 3rd at Melbourne Zoo The new carnivore precinct is open! Last weekend the female Snow Leopard spent the day lounging where the public could see her for the first time she is magnificent. When you arrive if we're not enjoying coffee near the front gate, ph Kris or Karin to find out where anyone is. No set finish time as it depends on weather and other commitments. Kris can show us a young elephant skull which is tucked away but is for public viewing if that is of interest to sketch. If you would like company it s wise to confirm attendance on the WASA Noticeboard or check with one of the regular attendees. I visited the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in Geelong during mid- February and came away inspired, frustrated and cheered. The hushed silence and quiet conversations set a scene of respect and awe. My lasting impression is of sadness and awe at our world and its creatures. The exhibition touched me powerfully and I commend to you a visit before it closes in May. Kris Page 3 of 9 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126
4 WASA exhibition opportunities The MIFGS event is on Wednesday March 21 st. to Sunday March 25 th. If you haven t heard from Karin by March 15 th. to confirm your duty day/time please her to check. Note that any delay in letting you know is not of our doing as we are reliant on the MIFGS organisers. When you're on duty during the show you need to introduce yourself to the sales person at the gallery display area (upstairs), stay mostly in the WASA area and help people with questions AND occasionally walk through the other art groups aisles too. Take down artworks people wish to buy and walk with them to the sales table and help wrap for the buyer. If you're going to the show visit the gallery display area and hopefully there will be lots of vacant spaces in our area as sales have progressed. Helping with bump-out? yes please all help most welcome as by the end of the event the WASA volunteers are tired and usually hot and even if we sell very well wrapping the unsolds, getting them onto trolleys and downstairs to the parked cars is a chore. If you're coming to help bump-out you must have a safety vest on. We will let you know the sales and judging results in a future issue. ************************************************************************************ WASA's next exhibition 'Hunt for the Wilder Pictures' is June 1 st to 25 th. to be held at 'Art at Linden Gate' in Yarra Glen open Friday to Monday. The area attracts many day-trippers and visitors. WASA is offering cash prizes to total of $750 and please note we can only hang 50 x 2d paintings (there is plenty of room for 3d artworks) so be quick to get your entry form in. We are having a theme of 'camouflage' to create to if you wish. You don't have to comply with the theme, it is an option to push your imagination and creativity. Entries close 19 th May and the entry form is attached to this . Please note the maximum framed size restrictions. A small number of unframed are able to be exhibited presented like these in the photo with a label of your name, title & price on the front AND greeting cards can be sold also. *********************************************************************************************************** WASA's 'Wild Awards 2018' WASA s prestigious biennial exhibition of fine artworks begins Aug. 23 rd. until Sept. 25 th and prizes of cash/art products/voucher are in excess of $3000. Entry to this exhibition is by selection and we hope you will submit your very best artworks. WASA has not shown at Burrinja previously and we hope for a good show in a terrific art/cultural centre with studios, café / bar, theatre and a strong art community in the area. Entries close July 26 th. and we will notify you of acceptance or otherwise by within a week or so. Delivery of artworks needs to be before 15 th. August to one of our depots or direct to the gallery on Friday 17 th. August*. Burrinja hang this exhibition so whilst it's a time and energy saver for us, we need to be more stringent about delivery and collection. There are no size restrictions for 2d framed paintings for this exhibition some restriction for 3d pieces for which we have 3 plinths available. The entry form for the Wild Awards is on the website in the members' library password is cockatoo. Page 4 of 9 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126
