NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Members are advised that the Annual General Meeting is to be held at the meeting room of Box Hill Library 1040 Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill, Victoria on Tuesday 15 th March 2016 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) WASA s audit report and financial accounts are at the end of this Warble. After the AGM there will be a presentation about travelling in Africa by Julie Ellis, followed by supper. See page 9 for parking information A Simple Question To be able collect the entrance key for Box Hill Library for WASA meetings the person who collects it needs to have a library card for Whitehorse/Manningham Libraries. I have a card and the system works well but I think it is wise to have an emergency person who usually comes to meetings, who can collect the key if I can t attend unexpectedly. The key is dropped in the library return shute after we leave and locking up is easy. So if you have a library card for Whitehorse/Manningham, please put up your hand to be emergency person. If you don t have a card and live in the area you need to apply online for a library card at it is free and they post it out to you. You need to arrive at the library about 6.50pm to collect the key. Let me know please if you can help. I shudder to think of people standing around unable to get into the meeting room. Kris Page 2 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

4 WASA Meeting - 16th February 2016 by Ralph Keller It is a new year with a fresh start in another meeting venue which is my fourth since I joined the Society only five seasons ago. This year we're coming together at the library in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill - and a nice, spacious meeting place it is. Our first guest speaker of the year was Robert Knight and he demonstrated his technique in Charcoal drawing/painting. Robert is a professional artist, painting cityscapes, rainforest scenes, aerial views and seascapes in what he calls a contemporary realist style. In his own words: through my artwork I intend to convey the message that much beauty exists in familiar, everyday subjects. That he has succeeded in this is evident from his long list of awards and achievements. Robert works in oil and other mediums and his paintings can be found in private and corporate collections in Australia and in other countries. The evening, however, was devoted to charcoal work and for his first demo. he used a reference photo that showed a hillside with eucalypt trees and exposed rock faces in the You Yangs, a range of hills near Geelong, south-west of Melbourne. Robert explained his paintings always progress in a sequence of four basic steps: contd.. He worked on Saunders 300gsm rough watercolour paper. Robert never pre-draws his subjects but starts with charcoal immediately. His working tools are simple and consist of willow charcoal sticks, some other compressed charcoal products, fine sandpaper to grind charcoal to dust, rags to rub this dust onto the paper and finally a selection of different erasers. Page 4 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

5 1) The main shapes are indicated first. This is done with a piece of rag dipped in ground up charcoal dust, which is then rubbed over the paper surface, outlining the main features and giving a light grey tone to large areas, the sky for instance. 2) Still using the charcoal filled rag, the various elements are then slowly more defined and sharpened. 3) Next, a charcoal stick is used to draw definite lines which focus attention on important features and give light and shade to the composition. 4) Some parts are then lightened by selectively lifting off the charcoal with a series of erasers - Robert most often uses the kneadable type because of its ability to be moulded into any suitable shape. And this is how Robert's You Yangs scene took shape in front of our eyes. The sky received a light covering with charcoal, the silhouette trees on the skyline were strengthened, darkened and given shape with light and shade, whilst the rock faces were outlined and then worked on further with rag and charcoal stick. Finally, the longest time was spent on refining vegetation and rock textures with charcoal stick and eraser to finish a very eye-catching landscape picture. Happily, there was enough time for a second demo, the new subject being a beautifully gnarled and contorted old gum tree. However by now everybody was gasping for a cup of tea. So once Robert was supplied with his refreshments, he worked away quietly whilst we observed from a distance, drinking tea and getting stuck into the delicious assortment of cakes, provided by the kind souls Kay Ellis and Nadine Dudek many thanks! Contd Page 5 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

6 Whilst Robert's subject was quite different this time, he still followed the same sequence. Trunk and main branches of the gum tree were outlined with charcoal rubbed on by rag, just dark enough to make them stand out from the light grey background. Then he defined the deep shadow sides of branches with strong black lines drawn with a charcoal stick and smaller branches were added in the same way. Areas of foliage he indicated by banging the stick on the paper, the resulting black dots realistically suggested leaves. The pale colour of the main trunk was achieved by removing much of the grey tone with an eraser. Finally, putting in the dark burls and imperfections on the old gum with a charcoal stick completed another very impressive painting demonstration. By the way, Robert never uses fixatives on his sheets of charcoal works - he fears that the substance may "yellow" the painting with time and, anyway, charcoal is a very durable medium (ancient cave paintings in charcoal have lasted thousands of years). However, his framed pictures are always protected by glass. As Will Ritchie and I drove home we discussed the evening and found that we were entirely in agreement - this had been a demonstration to inspire us to give charcoal painting, a new medium for both of us, a good try. Maybe others, watching Robert work, may have been similarly motivated? Anyway, a big thank you to Robert Knight for sharing with us his expertise and for giving us these two highly instructive demonstrations. Page 6 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

14 Arizene Pty Ltd ABN : GPO Box 2455 Melbourne VIC 3001 (PH) INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2015 To the members of Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc I have audited the accompanying financial report of Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc, which comprises the committee s report, the assets and liabilities statement as at 31 December 2015, the income and expenditure statement for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the certification by members of the committee on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the association. The Committee s responsibility for the financial report The Committee of Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, and have determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 to the financial report is appropriate to meet the requirements of the constitution, Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Associations Incorporation Reform Regulations 2012, and the needs of the members. The Committee s responsibility also includes such internal control as the Committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor s responsibility My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. I have conducted my audit in accordance with Australian auditing standards. Those standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Independence In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of the Australian professional accounting bodies. Limitation of Audit Evidence Since cash receipts form a part of the income of the organisation, it is very difficult to establish an internal control system capable of verifying the total income received by the organisation. Therefore there were no satisfactory audit procedures that we could perform to obtain reasonable assurance that all receipts were properly recorded. The scope of the audit has been limited to the income recorded in the accounting records, and deposited into the bank accounts of the organisation by Committee members. Audit Opinion In my opinion, the financial report of Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc presents fairly, in all material respects, the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc's financial position as at 31 December 2015, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended on that date and complies with Australian accounting standards to the extent described in Note 1. Basis of accounting and restriction on distribution Without modifying my opinion, I draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the Committee s financial reporting responsibilities under the requirements of the constitution, Consumer Affairs Victoria, and the Associations Incorporation Reform Regulations As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.
