1 Peoria Fine Arts Association Newsletter WEBSITE: Issue 147 NOVEMBER 2017 Guest Artist of the Month DEBRA JONES Debra Jones is known in the Phoenix area as a portrait painter pets and people, and Western artist who specializes in the women of the west. In May of 2017, she was chosen by the National Park Service to be one of the few Artists in Residence in the Petrified Forest. Debra says, I paint anything with eyeballs. She began her residence open to see where the spirit of the raven took her. This presentation summarizes the process of becoming an AIR and her own experiences and the art

By Elaine Waters Often in my classes, I will ask the students to critique my art. This is good for me, as well as good for them. Sometimes they will mention a problem that I have been trying to ignore. Then, I know that I must FIX the problem. Sometimes you will spot your own problems. Sometimes a viewer will spot them. If an issue with one of your paintings keeps bothering you. Then, you will have to fix it. Avoiding fixing a problem does not make it go away. It will haunt you and you will never be satisfied with the painting. Now, on to another important issue. One thing I have never really focused on during critiques is framing. If the first thing a viewer comments on when looking at a painting is the frame, chances are very good that the frame is wrong for the painting. The frame should quietly complete the painting. It should never be more important and showy than the art itself. The frame can be a color that is in the painting, so that the frame will seem to be a part of the painting. Sometimes commercial framers will put colored mats or mats with cut out designs on your art. These kinds of things are best left up to the buyer to do to suit his own taste. The artist is always better off to use off white or very lightly colored mats. Often jurors for art exhibits will reject very nice art because of the way the art is framed. Be careful when choosing a frame at a garage sale or second hand store. Old frames have a way of showing scuff marks, dirt, dried out and warped mitered corners. If the painting has glass, make sure the mat is clean and that the glass is clean. Just because the dimensions of the frame match the dimensions of the art, the frame may NOT be the right match for the art! Both of these issues are very important when you are preparing your art for exhibit. Always finish your art until it satisfies you and surround it with the perfect frame for that painting. Remember to bring your artwork for the critique session. WHAM EXHIBIT Paintings can be dropped off between 10 and 1 on November 1st. Your dues must be paid in order to exhibit. Painting are to be picked up on November 30th between 1-3 p.m. Artist Reception is on November 4th from 2-4 p. m. Please invite all of your family and friends to this event.

3 Issue 143 October 2017 President s Message Page 3 Greetings Everyone, It has been good to get to know each one of you better. Each member makes up an integral part of this association. We are seeing new members come in and it s a tribute for those that invited them. I have been passing out the info we had for you on the table as you came in to the meeting and I hope you will take the opportunity to do the same. I hope you are inviting people to join us as guests and also inviting people to the show and reception. With us all coming together we ll see good things happening. I m excited for our November exhibit at Wham and looking forward to seeing all your art work. Please invite your friends and family to the reception. I appreciate all of you making others feel welcome. Thank you also for bringing in the great snacks. I hope you ll use snack time to get to know each other better. 4 Artists of the Month FIRST PLACE SECOND PLACE THIRD PLACE DORIS CANAVAN RICHARD MEIDL CRISTINA SCOTTI Guidelines for Artist of the Month This event is held monthly, September through April, and Open to all members of PFAA. Limit is one framed work of art object each month. Artist awarded Artist of the month are not eligible for further competition in the yearly cycle. All Artist of the Month are automatically entered in the Artist of the Year Event held at our last meeting of the year. Artist of the Year will then be chosen from the submissions that won Artist of the Month. If the awarded work has been sold, you may substitute another work for the May event. Congratulations to Bill Martin who has 13 paintings hanging in Rayner s Coffee & Chocolate Shop.

5 COMMING EVENTS Next Meeting November 15, :50 p.m. Critique Session 6 p.m. General Meeting 6:20 p.m. refreshments 50/50 raffle voting for artist of the Month door prize drawing 6:35 art demo December 5 January 18 Peoria Main Library Exhibit Artwork will be accepted December 5th from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be no formal reception as it is such a busy time of the year. We ll celebrate together at the Christmas Party. Art in the Park...dates to be announced later. It will not be until after the holidays have settled. Next Board Meeting November 8, p.m. Freedom Plaza Nancy provided us with a very interesting demo Using alcohol inks at the October meeting. How to Find Us If you re coming from the 101, avoid confusion of the Grand Avenue intersection by exiting at Olive Avenue and go north on 83rd. Stay to the left on 83rd when you intersect with Cotton Crossing. The community center is 2 blocks south of Peoria at 83rd Avenue.
