2 Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue] :: [Date] IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE COMMANDANT Parents and Guardians: OMI is a military school. Cadet uniforms are the essential symbol of the school experience and it s important that every cadet wear their uniform proudly and properly! Unfortunately, on the first day of Spring Semester, only 76% of the student body wore their uniform properly and had all of their required items. Proper wear of the cadet uniform is part of the daily grade, so that means that 24% of our cadets started the new semester giving away points. Here are the uniform issues that showed up at the gate on Tuesday, January 16 Uniform Infraction# of Cadets Planner 66 ID 60 wrong uniform 16 shorts 15 shirt 11 socks 10 shoes 9 haircut 7 sweater 3 nails 2 earrings 2 sweats 1 We follow California Cadet Corps uniform regulations at OMI, which are based on the US Army uniform regulations. Besides the clothing and insignia, the regulations also cover hair styles, jewelry, and makeup. All of the information is listed in the cadet planner, but since 10% of the cadets show up to school without their planners I am sending the information out for you to use. You can also find the entire cadet handbook online on our school webpage ( Replacement items can be purchased from the school store, the Grizzly Exchange, before school, during breaks and lunch, and after school. Jewelry: Cadets are not allowed to wear any jewelry in their ears, nose, face, eyebrow, neck, or other visible area while in any OMI uniform. No other body pierced items are authorized (e.g., nose/lip rings, tongue rings, eyebrow ring, etc.). Rings, necklaces, rosary beads, or bracelets of any type are not authorized. A discrete religious medallion on a chain may be worn under tshirts such that neither the chain nor medallion are visible. An inexpensive watch that is black or neutral in color may be worn with all uniforms. In lieu of jewelry, plastic transparent spacers no larger than 1/8 inch in diameter may be worn for a period not to exceed two (2) weeks if a cadet gets a piercing during the school year. No gauges may be worn at any time. No bandages or Band-Aids or other disguises may be worn to hide piercings or jewelry. An official or authorized OMI class ring may be worn by juniors or seniors. Hair and fingernail standards and grooming policies 2
3 Hair: (1) General. Extreme, eccentric, or trendy haircuts or hairstyles are not authorized. Dyes, tints, or bleaches are strongly discouraged but if used, they must choose those that result in natural hair colors and look like human hair. Colors that detract from a military appearance are prohibited. Applied hair colors that are prohibited include, but are not limited to, purple, pink, blue, green, orange, bright (fire-engine) red, and fluorescent or neon colors. Hair gels or sprays may not be used to spike or otherwise shape the hair in an extreme fashion, including making the hair stand straight up, Mohawks, faux-hawks, patches, etc. Cadets will not cut designs or parts into their hair, eyebrows, or scalp. (2) Short haircuts (men). The hair on the top of the head must be neatly groomed and will not exceed two inches in length. The bulk of the hair may not be excessive or will be such that it does not present a ragged, unkempt, or extreme appearance. The hair must present a tapered appearance (where outline of the hair conforms to the shape of the head. When the hair is combed, it will not fall over the ears and eyebrows or touch the collar except for the closely cut hair on the back of the neck. In all cases, the bulk of the hair will not interfere with the normal wear of headgear. Cadets with short hair are not authorized to wear braids, cornrows, or dreadlocks. Hair that is clipped closely or shaved to the scalp is permitted (3) Facial hair. Cadets who wear sideburns will keep them neatly trimmed. Sideburns, if worn, will not extend below the lowest part of the exterior ear opening or be flared. The base of the sideburn will be a clean-shaven, horizontal line. Neatly trimmed mustaches are authorized, but cleanshaven faces are preferred. Mustaches will not present a chopped or bushy appearance, and no portion of the mustache will cover the upper lip line or extend sideways beyond a vertical line drawn upward from the corners of the mouth. No beards or goatees are permitted. (4) Long hairstyles (women). Cadets will ensure their hair is neatly groomed, that the length and bulk of the hair are not excessive, and that the hair does not present a ragged, unkempt, or extreme appearance. Trendy styles that result in shaved portions of the scalp other than the neckline or designs cut into the scalp are prohibited. Cadets with long hair may wear braids, dreadlocks and cornrows as long as the braided style is conservative, the braids and cornrows lie snugly on the head, and any hair- holding devices comply with the standard described below The hair will be pulled away from the face and gathered into a bun or braid at the back of the head and not fall over the ears and eyebrows or extend below the bottom edge of the collar at any time during normal activity. No bangs are allowed. Long hair will be neatly and inconspicuously fastened or pinned so no free-hanging hair is visible. This includes styles worn with the physical fitness uniform. Styles that are lopsided or distinctly unbalanced are prohibited. Ponytails, pigtails, or braids that are not secured to the head (allowing hair to hang freely), widely spaced individual hanging locks, and other extreme styles that protrude from the head are prohibited. Extensions, weaves, wigs, and hairpieces are authorized; however, these additions must have the same general appearance as the individual s natural hair. Additionally, any wigs, extensions, hairpieces, or weaves must comply with the grooming policies as described. Hair holding devices are authorized only for the purpose of securing the hair. Cadets will not place hair-holding devices in the hair for decorative purposes. All hair-holding devices must be plain and of a color as close to the cadet s hair as possible or 16 black. Authorized devices include, but are not limited to small, plain scrunchies, barrettes, combs, pins, and clips. Devices that are conspicuous, excessive, or decorative are prohibited. 3 3
4 Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue] :: [Date] Some examples of prohibited devices include, but are not limited to, rubber bands, headbands (rubber, fabric or plastic), large, lacy scrunchies; beads, bows or claw clips; devices with butterflies, flowers, sparkles, gems, or scalloped edges; and bows made from hairpieces. Cosmetics: As with hairstyles, the requirement for standards regarding cosmetics is necessary to maintain uniformity and to avoid an extreme appearance. Cadets are authorized to wear cosmetics and nail polish with the uniform, provided they are applied conservatively and in good taste and complement the uniform and their complexion. Lotion with glitter, temporary or permanent tattoos, stickers, or designs on the body are prohibited. Cadets will not wear shades of lipstick and nail polish that distinctly contrast with their complexion, that detract from the uniform, or that are extreme. Some examples of extreme colors include, but are not limited to, purple, gold, blue, black, white, bright (fire-engine) red, khaki, camouflage colors, and fluorescent colors. Cadets will not apply designs to nails or apply two-tone or multi-tone colors to nails. All cadets will keep fingernails clean and neatly trimmed. Cadets will keep nails trimmed so as NOT to exceed a nail length of ¼ inch as measured from the tip of the finger. Notes from the OMI Library: There is a statistic that says, As a child grows, by the time he/she is 5 years old, a vocabulary of 2,000 to 5,000 words will be learned. However, if a child is read to for only 15 minutes a day, the vocabulary learned will be 30,000 to 50,000 words by the time he/she is 5 years old. But I m not 5! Don t worry it is never too late. You can build your vocabulary at any time in your life. Start reading NOW. So, please read to your children each day or night. Ms. DeVinna wants to encourage everyone to read for that 15 minutes. She says, read to your kid, to your neighborhood, to a sister or brother (or any other family member), read to your dog!!! Don t have any books to read, see Ms. Dori McGee-Lundy in the OMI Library. READ, READ, READ!!! 4

6 Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue] :: [Date] Dual & Concurrent Enrollment What is Dual Enrollment? Dual Enrollment allows cadets who are still in high school to take college-level courses and accelerate their educational achievement. Dual enrolled students earn credit towards high school graduation, while at the same time earning college credits (3 Peralta Units = 10 OUSD Credits). Most Dual Enrollment courses are conveniently offered on the high school campus (unless otherwise noted). Registration fees, tuition and lab fees are waived for Dual Enrollment students. All services available to regular college students, such as the use of the Library and Tutoring Center are also available to dual enrolled students. Textbooks are purchased by the participating public high schools. Dual Enrollment is an accelerated path to and through college, saving time and money. Dual Enrollment expands Career Tech Education Pathways at high schools or provides more college readiness courses that are often transferable to four-year colleges. Cadets who complete even a single college class are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, persist in college, and complete an Associate s degree or higher.
