Ordinary hair ends in one natural point; whilst hog s hair may end in one or two or more natural points. 2. Hog s hair is thicker than ordinary hair and is thus stiffer and stronger; it has a unique tapered point found in no other hair type. This is the reason why hog s hair brushes are so suitable for painting with oils or acrylic colours and for retouching and varnishing work. The best hog s hair is the white variety which has first been bleached. Used on its side, a filbert gives a thin line; used flat it produces a broad brush stroke; and by varying the pressure as you apply the brush to canvas, or flicking it across, you can get a tapering mark.
