At Lynton we are looking forward to building on our successes of 2014 in which we celebrated our 20th birthday and experienced strong growth resulting in a record breaking year. 4 MARKETING FOCUS Lynton wins AWARDS in 2014 Lynton remain conscious of the fact that they have a responsibility towards their customers and should seek to provide them with any help that they can in the running of their own clinics or salons. Held at Manchester Central (aka GMEX) in conjunction with Professional Beauty North, the event was a great success (see cover photo), with talks being delivered by company personnel and invited industry speakers on subjects as diverse as new Lynton product developments and moves within the industry to bring in a new nationally accepted qualification for all laser & IPL Practitioners, whether they be NVQ Level 3 Beauty Practitioners or Consultant Plastic Surgeons. This Customer Workshop will be an annual event, and feedback is sought from our customers on the ideal time to hold it, and the ideal format. 6 TREATMENT FOCUS Fungal Nail Infection Onychomycosis (also known as dermatophytic onychomycosis, or tinea unguium ) is a fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about half of all nail abnormalities. This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common. It occurs in about 10% of the adult population. The most common symptom of a fungal nail infection is the nail becoming thickened and discoloured: white, black, yellow or green. As the infection progresses the nail can become brittle, with pieces breaking off or coming away from the toe or finger completely. If left untreated, the skin can become inflamed and painful underneath and around the nail. There may also be white or yellow patches on the nailbed or scaly skin next to the nail, and sometimes an unpleasant smell. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms, unless the disease is severe. Fortunately, if you have a long-pulse Nd:YAG Laser (either fibre-delivered, or via a handpiece) on your LUMINA, LIGHT A* or DUETTO MT System, you can easily treat Fungal Nail Infection, thereby providing another revenue stream for your Clinic or Salon. Please contact your Lynton Rep for protocols for your particular system. How does the treatment work? Light is absorbed by the water in the skin underneath and around the nail creating heat. This heat helps to destroy the dermatophytes and eliminate the fungal infection. The laser applicator is placed on the nail and a short pulse of light is released. The entire nail bed and nail matrix is then treated in this way. How does the treatment feel? A degree of heating and some discomfort is felt during treatment. However, a skin cooling device can be used to make treatment as comfortable as possible. Are there any side effects? The side-effects of laser treatments are generally mild and transient (unlike the side-effects of some of the medications used to treat fungal infections). The area may be red immediately after treatment and may be a little swollen and tender, but this usually subsides within a few hours. Unwanted reactions are rare but may include a small blister in the area around the nail, or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. In rare cases, if the nail is very badly infected, the nail may fall off, but if this occurs, it will be replaced by a smoother, uninfected nail. How many treatments are necessary? Treatments are conducted every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the area being treated. The number of treatments required varies, although typically 2-4 treatments are needed for optimum results. These results become apparent as the nail grows out, and due to the slow rate of growth of toenails it may take several months for the full results to become apparent. How long does treatment take? Treatments generally take in the region of 30 minutes.
