It is an essential element that controls cell, tissue and organ regeneration. Humans can live weeks without eating food, but only sur vive minutes without oxygen. Oxygen bars now offer customers the chance to inhale pure ox ygen leaving them feeling refreshed and revived. Quite a few trendsetting beauty salons have also been offering oxygen-based therapy for several years. Some of you are probably wondering if this type of therapy is really effective. Do both body and skin really need an oxygen boost, or is this therapy a modern day wonder? Actuelle Spring-summer 2012

7 Fact # 1: Our body requires oxygen Before answering any of these questions, we must first briefly explain the basics of human body function: the body requires energy to stay alive. The combination of oxygen and food nutrients produces a vital source of energy known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate). This energy allows body s cells to divide and regenerate, a necessary part of the mitochondria process. It takes 21 to 28 days for skin cells to go through their life cycle. They regenerate within the basal layer of the epidermis (the junction between the epidermis and the dermis) and travel back up to the skin surface where keratinization starts and cells eventually die. Without oxygen, cell regeneration would not be possible Fact # 2: We all lack oxygen Despite the fact that oxygen makes up 21% of earth s atmosphere and that we are constantly breathing some, several factors can cause our bodies to be oxygen deprived, namely stress, lack of physical exercise, the onset of acute or chronic diseases, long term exposure to the sun, pollution, smoke, etc. The simple natural process of ageing leads to a decline in oxygen intake! In fact, over time our circulatory system and network of capillaries start to break down. Consequently, oxygen travelling through the blood provides less nourishment and at a slower rate. This slowing down of oxygen flow in the blood has a negative effect on cell regeneration and the health of our skin. One s complexion loses radiance, wrinkles and fine lines set in and skin tissue loses its firmness and elasticity, among other things. (tissue fluid), connective tissues and the basal layer. It thereby promotes cellular regeneration, slows down the process of ageing, strengthens the skin and its antibacterial defences, eliminates impurities and reduces visible signs of acne. This results in younger, firmer, softer skin, the key to a truly radiant, hydrated complexion. Fact # 4: Oxygen-based therapy really is effective Pure oxygen treatments are possible thanks to sophisticated devices as the Vital O 2 Lux. Hopefully, this information will be useful, both for you and your clientele. Enjoy! How long is the growth phase of hair? The duration of the anagen (growth) phase of hair is different for each person. It is affected by such factors as age, weight, sex, metabolism, hormones, ethnic origin, medication, nutrition (diets), environmental conditions and even stress. Nevertheless, we all share the same hair cycle, broken down into three phases: 1. Anagen: active growth phase of hair influenced by the condition of the dermal papilla. During this phase, the hair papilla is voluminous and made up of a vascular core (electroepilation treatment target). The production of melanin reaches its highest level (photoepilation treatment target). 2. Catagen: a transitional stage during which hair stops growing, but remains attached. At this point, melanin is no longer produced in the germinative zone. 3. Telogen: the resting phase of hair during which cells are inactive. Consequently, there is no growth of the hair shaft during this phase. Hair begins to shed only when the next growth phase occurs. About 50 to 100 telogen hairs are shed normally each day, accounting for the hair loss seen every day in the shower and with hair combing. The length of hair varies depending on the body region, age, sex and the individual person. With an anagen phase of 6 to 10 years, hair can reach a length of 1.28 meters (approximately 4 feet). The anagen phase varies from 1 to 12 months for certain regions of the body, which means hair in these areas can grow from 1 to 6 cm (approximately 0.4 to 2.3 inches). 10 How long does electrolysis treatment take to achieve permanent hair removal? The below table shows the results of a study conducted in 2001, indicating what beauty institutes using Apilus technology reported as the approximate time required for epilation treatments to permanently eliminate hair from different areas of the body. However, several factors affect how quickly results are achieved, such as the technique used, the device and probe combination, the exactness of the insertion, hormones, hair density, time between treatments, etc. This underlines the importance of establishing a treatment plan, receiving proper training, and using the right equipment. Today, thanks to the effectiveness of the Apilus Platinum 27 MHz Epilator, the average timeframe can be reduced by approximately 25% since the coagulation process is optimized. No, this type of treatment is not allowed for patients using a cardiac pacemaker as a defibrillator or for acute or persistent conditions of arrhythmia, ventricular tachycardia or atrial tachycardia. In fact, the electric current can destabilize the pacemaker and cause it to malfunction. Epilation using a high frequency current could be used if the pacemaker is not used as a defibrillator. However, we recommend you obtain the written consent of the patient s doctor and also contact your insurance company. It is always wise to err on the side of caution, especially if the patient suffers from symptomatic tachycardia caused by a nervous condition not related to any apparent cardiac lesion (idiopatic or primary). Also, exercise caution with each follow up treatment. Is it safe to perform electroepilation treatments on a localized area of the body infected by the Herpes Simplex Virus? Not recommended! There is a high risk that the blisters may burst. The infection would then spread and form scabs. Precautionary measure! After the infected area has healed, wait at least two weeks before performing electroepilation treatments. Dario Zujo, International Business Development, Dectro International, Québec, Canada In fact, for several years now, laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments have been used to achieve permanent hair reduction, and reduce signs of ageing and skin imperfections. However, there are still a lot of people who confuse these two types of treatment. Even though laser and IPL treatments both use light energy, there are several important differences: Definition IPL Intense pulsed light is a technology that produces very high intensity light delivered in one or a series of short pulses. LASER A laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) device normally consists of a sealed tube, containing a pair of mirrors, and a laser medium that is excited by some form of energy to produce visible light, invisible, ultraviolet or infrared radiation. Laser devices emit a light described as coherent, monochromatic and collimated. The concentration of light energy can be beneficial for certain treatments, while limited for others. Although scientists, manufacturers of these devices and estheticians all debate the effectiveness of pulsed light compared to laser light emissions, it has been concluded that their results are more or less equivalent. IPL devices are less expensive than laser devices, and one should anticipate lower maintenance and repair costs, and lower insurance coverage. The size of the IPL crystal covers a surface up to 5 times greater than that produced by a laser device. Consequently, this reduces the duration of treatment. New generation IPL devices are extremely versatile. They can be used for hair removal (epilation), skin rejuvenation, vascular lesions, pigment spots, and acne treatments by a simple change of a filter. Laser light is limited to one wavelength, and consequently can be used for only one type of treatment. An esthetician would therefore need to use a different laser to treat multiple skin conditions. Although each individual tolerates pain to a different degree, most agree that IPL devices provide a greater level of comfort because of the delay between each pulse. In most countries, the use of laser devices is restricted to doctors. On the other hand, IPL devices can be used by estheticians and electrolygists. Intense Pulsed Light therapy is becoming a more and more popular esthetic option because of the many great benefits it offers. There are a lot of miracle products on the market today, but can you be sure they really work? Glycolic acid, more commonly known as AHA, is an active base ingredient proven effective over the years in cosmetic applications. Since ancient times, people of all cultures have been using glycolic acid for its ability to improve skin tone and texture. Why use it? AHA is classified as an alcohol acid. This family of acids is a naturally occurring substance found in many fruits and plants, particularly sugar cane, beetroot and grape extracts. This is why these acids are sometimes referred as fruit acids. Thanks to its small molecular size, glycolic acid can penetrate deep into the skin. It rebalances the skin s water content, leaving it softer, smoother and more radiant. It also reduces the appearance of wrinkles, acne and hyperpigmentation. Works on the skin, inside and out! The effets of glycolic acid on the skin are remarkable. This highly active ingredient works on the upper layer of the skin by weakening interlipid bonding of corneocytes. This promotes desquamation (skin peeling) and an overall decrease in stratum corneum thickness. It leaves the underlying layer looking younger, better toned and more radiant. After 3 to 6 weeks of application, you will notice an improvement in the condition and thickness of the skin. This is due to the renewal of keratinocytes and the increased production of molecules that help strengthen the skin resistance. Following a glycolic acid peel treatment, there is an increased vascularization of the dermis. This improves intercellular exchanges, leading to a brighter, rosier and more even complexion. There is also a notable increase in the production of collagen and elastin. Concentration levels and ph Acid concentration level plays an important role in the process of skin rejuvenation. Although glycolic acid at weak concentration levels penetrates only as far as the inner layers of the stratum corneum, it benefits both the epidermis and dermis. At higher concentration levels, the acid penetrates deeper into the skin, producing a more effective exfoliation. The duration of contact with the skin is also very important. For example, a 70% concentration level of glycolic acid, requires a minimum of 5 minutes for the acid to penetrate as far as the dermalepidermal junction. More than 10 minutes can harm the skin. The ph level is also a factor. The lower the level, the better the results. Last but not least, one must consider the client s skin type. A thick oily skin type allows longer treatment times and higher concentration levels. Upon application, the client feels a warm and slightly tingling sensation. Glycolic acid based products should not be used all year long. They are recommended only when a skin cure is required, and preferably right before bedtime!
