5 Other Useful Definitions: Carrier oil- used to dilute essential oils, they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Typically do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, though some, such as olive, have a mild distinctive smell. Infused oil- a combination of a carrier oil and plant material. A carrier oil, like sunflower or grapeseed oil, is placed in an airtight container with the appropriate plant material for an extended time (usually 3-4 weeks) or can be made by slowly heating the mixture. Plant material is strained out and oil can be stored in an airtight container. Essential oil- a class of volatile oils obtained from plants through distillation, possessing the odor and characteristic properties of the plant. Hydrosol- Also known as flower water, this is a byproduct of the distillation process. It contains only a small amount of essential oil. Hydrosols are useful for when a gentler formula is required.
