Inside, you ll find loads of information about our entire range of finished inks, overprint varnishes, black bases, letdown vehicles, extenders, compounds and ink modifiers that we manufacture at Kerley Ink. New products and features in 2010 VersaLith ECON series sheetfed black & colors We conceived VersaLith ECON to be a uniquely American answer to the current flood of lowcost quickset inks flooding the American market. Made from exclusively American-sourced raw materials, VersaLith ECON is a super low-cost set of process colors targerted to high-volume commercial and publication sheetfed prnters. Low VOC content, super quick-setting, and VErsatile performance on the majority of paper substrates makes this line one of our newest stars of the pressroom. Try free 1 Gallon samples. Thermasoy LO VOC low VOC black & process colors A powerful new addition to the Kerley Family of finished heatset web offset finished inks, the Thermasoy LO VOC series features VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds, EPA method 24) content of as little as 18 percent! Such a formulation signals a fundamental change in how heatset web offset inks will be formulated in the future. With emissions of carbon dioxide from industrial sources under the scrutiny of governments around the world, commercial and publicastion printers will likely see pressure applied to reduce those emissions of carbon dioxide or pay a hefty tax. By reducing the volatile solvent content of our Thermasoy formula while keeping the ability to dry successfully on coated stocks at high press speeds, Thermasoy LO VOC will help to drastically reduce emissions into the atmosphere of hydrocarbons and also dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions from afterburner units. Econotherm LS series heatset web black & colors Econotherm LS series inks are the first giveaway-priced series in the Econotherm family of value-priced heatset black and colors. LS stands for Low-Cost Series. The major difference between Econotherm LS series inks and their complementary Econotherm NS (Normal Series) is that the LS series has about 90% of the color strength, yet all other attributes remain the same. Econotherm LS series inks will be available in black and process colors only. We will accomodate the tack ranges needed by most high-volume commercial printers, as Econotherm LS will be made available from a tack of 6 points up to a tack of 12 points (measured at 1200 RPM, 90 F, Thwing-Albert Model 101 Electronic Inkometer). EcoBright is Kerley s answer to the ever-increasing demand for earth-friendly inks that have less air pollutants and are made from renewabale resources like linseed and soy oils. Eco- Bright is compatible with Speedex (Kerley s line of oil-based stay-fresh litho inks). We expect that EcoBright will have close to the same performance as Speedex, too. 8 How we price our products As our product line has grown in the past several years, we have had to make some modifications to our pricing policy to reflect this diversification. Presently, we have two separate pricing systems in place: one for finished inks and another for ink components. Ink Components Pricing (varnishes, bases, compounds) Our pricing structure for ink components is fairly simple, so we ll explain it first. We price any given ink component by the amount of 55 gallon drums of that product that you purchase or would have purchased if you bought that product in another type of container instead. For instance, if you buy a certain varnish in 15 gallon metal kits instead of 55 gallon drums, we then calculate the amount of 55 gallon drums you would have bought. Now that we know the actual or equivalent amount of drums you are purchasing of any given ink component, we look up a table that shows the price for the number of drums of that product that you are purchasing. We then add the upcharge for any special packaging you might require, such as buckets, tote bins, etc. to arrive at the final price for the product/quanity/package combination you require. Our Finished Inks Pricing Structure The way that we price our finished inks is similar to the method we use for ink components, with a few extra rules. Just like ink components, we price the finished inks by the number of 55 gallon drums or their equivalent that we sell per formula. The more drums of any one formula we sell to you, the better the price is for that particular formula. Just like with the ink components, the type of packaging in which you buy your finished ink does not determine your volume price, because we always calculate the equivalent amount of 55 gallon drums of product you purchased. For example: suppose you buy 15 kits of ink, each holding a net weight of 30 pounds. This totals 450 pounds, which is approximately the net amount held in a single 55 gallon drum. Thus, you are charged the one drum price for this color plus a small upcharge for the cost of the kits. Here s another example: you buy a tote bin of newsink, and you furnish us the empty tote bin. A tote bin comes closest to our 4 drum price category. We take the 4 drum price, then apply our you-supply tote bin discount. Since we manufacture such a large variety of special order and custom-made inks, often we have to make a fresh batch when we receive an order. Many of our finished ink batches are at least four drums in size. This means that if you order just one drum of custom-made ink, we have to deal with the other three drums of that ink. Consequentially, at the prices we sell our inks to you, we can t afford to inventory every custom formula we offer. To encourage potential purchasers of special and custom inks to buy a whole batch at one time, we have developed three different pricing tiers for all finished inks, along with minimum quantities for custom made inks. minimum order amounts for custom-made inks... Many special order and custom ink formulas carry a minimum order amount. This is because so many of our inks are made to order, and we need to sell as much of the batch that we make. The minimum applies almost exclusively to finished inks: very few ink components have a minimum order quantity. Most color inks have a minimum order amount of 400 lbs. Black inks have a minimum order amount of 850 to 900 lbs. You can always request less than the minimum amount: if we have that product in stock, we ll ship it anyway. Many inks, especially sets of mixing colors have no minimum quantity. There are about a dozen complete sets of inks that have no minimum quantity. Look in this catalog...whenever you see the no minimum symbol used in this catalog, you know you don t have to worry about ordering the minimum amount, since there is none. Special Order Inks The second pricing tier is what we call our "Special Order ink price. Special Order inks may appear in our catalog, but are usually less widely used than their "Standard counterparts because they may have some modification that is application-specific. This is where the amountof ink you order starts to count. Remember, orders of less than 4 drums of a Special Order Ink mean that we have to charge you more. If you order one, two, or three drums of this type of ink, there is a graduated upcharge for each of these quantities. Think of it as a "discount in reverse. 8

9 How we price our products Custom Inks The third and last pricing tier is for what we call our Custom inks. Custom inks are similar in status to "Special Order inks. Occasionally, a Custom ink may prove to be popular enough to be used by more than one customer. Just like with "Special order inks, if you order one, two, or three drums of this type of ink, there is a graduated upcharge for each of these quantities. A word about "centerline colors... We have the capability to make hundreds of "centerline colors like 347 Green, 185 Red, and many others. As long as you are able to order at least 400 lbs. (181 kgs.) of any single centerline color, we can make almost any shade you want. For orders less than the 400 lb. minimum, we currently charge a $0.25/lb. premium, plus our regular upcharge for packaging in buckets. Volume & Combination discounts You can save significantly with each order you place with Kerley Ink when you take advantage of our volume discount plan. And what s great about our discount plan is that you don t have to buy a whole lot of any particular Kerley product to immediately save real money! That s because we offer you a two-sided discount plan. You can save two ways at the same time by buying first in quantity, and then by variety. So if you buy ten drums of heatset black ink plus five drums of quickset black base, plus another five drums of quickset vehicle, you ll get the twenty drum price on all three items! Our discount plan spans across this entire catalog. No matter what you plan to buy: finished ink, base, varnish, compound, oil or ink additive, you get the volume discount applied on each and every item you purchase that day. Even "Special Order inks and "Custom inks count towards purchases of other Kerley products like ink components. "Special Order and "Custom inks are not combination discounted themselves until you reach the 4-drum per color order minimum of any "Special Order or "Custom ink formula. In other words, youdon t get a discount price for less than 4 drums of any single "Custom or "Special Order formula. 9

10 How & why we name our products Kerley is not unique in using product names, but we have completely rid our product line of items which identify themselves by formula number only. With the hundreds of formulas we offer, it became obvious that no one could very easily associate any particular ink by a random formula number. Because of this need to make a clear association of an ink formula with a name, we studied several ways in which we could devise a name system that would pinpoint the most important features of the product in a concise, clear manner. What we decided on was a system that divided the name of any Kerley product into four parts. Our four-part product name applies Product Almost all items manufactured by Kerley now carry a "product designation as the first part of their name. The best way to describe this is to say that this part of the item s description carries the family name". For example, many high gloss heatset inks we offer have the name NOVA. However our low cost soy oil-based newsinks are called "SOYTAB. Another product line is "50-50, which is a family of special blacks we make for book manufacture. This part of the item s name is the most important, for this is where we determine the basic mission of the product...what family it belongs to in the wide-ranging Kerley product line. Tack Range The "tack range portion of the product s description really applies only to the paste inks we manufacture. The tack range is not assigned by the reading on the inkometer. We found that the same ink can have many different readings depending upon who s inkometer it is read on. Instead, the tack range is a number product between zero and nine that we assign to the ink, with zero being the absolute highest tack level used in a product line, and nine being the lowest tack level in the product line. Thus, a "NOVA 1 will be a high tack ink on my inkometer as well as yours, regardless of the actual readings we individually obtain. "NOVA 6 will be toward the lower end of the product s available tack range 10

11 How & why we name our products to all finished inks, but at least two parts of the four-part name format are used for naming ink components as well. A really good way to "help yourself" to the many products and services that Kerley offers is to learn how to use this four-part name system. It is very simple. And when you have become familiar with the way we name Kerley products, you will be able to use this catalog more easily, and communicating with Kerley technical and customer service personnel will become much more convenient for you. Series The series is another way that we can narrow down the description of a Kerley product. The series portion of a product name acts as an "auxiliary name that helps more closely define a product within its product family. For instance, "NOVA 2 D describes a gloss heatset ink of high tack ("2 ) and dense ("D ) color, whereas "NOVA 2 DXB describes the same ink with the same tack, but with extra blue toner ("D- XB ). "SIGMA 2 is a heatset newsprint ink and "SIGMA 2 G is a gelled version of the same ink. Many times, we ll use the series part of the product description to identify it as a special ink made for a particular customer. We have hundreds of inks like this in our formula line. Color This part of the product description is almost self-explanatory. Almost all products, except for some vehicles, compounds, and additives carry a product color in their name. 11

13 Finished Inks for Heatset Web Offset NOVA Premium Heatset Black and Colors Nova is our premium heatset web offset ink. The Nova line consists of many tack-rated "sets, ranging from high tack sets like Nova 1" suitable for high-quality miniweb printing all the way down to low tack sets like "Nova 6, necessary for printing on newsprint. Within each tack range, different Nova "sub-series are available, each designed to solve a certain problem or maximize a certain feature. Nova heatset Blacks offer superior transfer, drying, gloss, trap, and blue tone. Nova heatset Colors have the requisite color strength, good gloss, rub and scratch resistance, drying, transfer and press stability that all heatset inks aspire to. A special set of Nova inks is available in a complete line of mixing color bases. Nova is designed to run on the most expensive cover stocks all the way down to better grades of newsprint with good results any time when a high-gloss, fully-toned heatset black or color is necessary for the print job. Nova Process and Special Colors will run optimally with Nova Black in first or fourth-down positions, but they will also work with any other conventionally formulated heatset black ink or color. The Nova Color tack sequence puts blue slightly above red, and red slightly above yellow. Most Nova inks are considered "Special Order inks or "Custom" inks, which both carry a premium charge for orders of less than four drums per color (see "How we price our products"). Inks like our Nova "DXB" line of highly toned heatset blacks are an example of a product we d like you to order at a minimum of two drums. Nova inks can be ordered in custom shades in quantities of at least 400 lbs. per color, custom blacks at least 900 to 1800 lbs. The proper choice of which Nova Black and Color to use for a specific application is the single most important factor in determining whether or not Nova will work on press, so always make an effort to contact us or read as much literature as you can before ordering a Nova or any other finished ink from Kerley. 14 Finished inks for Heatset Web Offset Nova 4 PS Series Heatset Black And Colors Introduced late in 1993, the Nova 4 PS series of heatset web offset inks offer the best there is for you and your customer. You ll be proud to put your label on these exceptionally fine inks! You could say that the "PS" stands for "positively superior" strength and shade. In addition, the drying speed and scuff resistance of these inks put them in the top rank of world-class quality. A suitable transparent extender for all Nova 4 PS Colors is our "Nova Extender" Vehicle found in the section called "Heatset Letdown Vehicles" further on in the catalog. As you can see, Nova 4 PS even features a heatset neutral mixing black so you can make all of the colors below the centerline of your Color Selector. If you need a process black to go along with the Nova 4 PS colors above, we offer Nova 4 "GLX" black, a highly toned, "dense" black that works perfectly with these outstanding printing inks. Since Nova 4 PS Series inks all contain PTFE, a very effective anti-scuff agent, we do not recommend that Nova 4 PS Series inks be overprinted. With Nova 4 PS, you ll never again be caught having to make emergency batches of heatset mixing bases or heatset custom shades! Nova 4 PS colors are in stock and have no minimum order. Nova "dxb" Series Heatset Blacks Available Colors Process Blue Rhodamine Red Phthalo Green Rubine Red/Process Red Process Yellow Neutral Mixing Black Reflex blue Violet Warm Red Purple A close relative of the Nova "D" series, the Nova "DXB" series has 10% alkali blue flush content for superior blue tone and fantastic-looking black-and-white halftones. Rarely ever will you encounter such a blue-toned heatset black as the Nova "DXB" series. All Nova "DXB" series inks are "special order" products, and are available in several tack ranges. Nova "DXB" series inks are available in black only. Nova "glx" Series Heatset Black Now available as both black and color formulations, Nova 4, 5 & 6 GLX inks are excellent for high gloss heatset web offset work. What distinguishes the Nova "GLX" blacks is their combination of excellent gloss and great print density when used on either high basis weight or light weight coated stocks. Nova "GLX" blacks are well-toned, with 6.5% alkali blue toner, making them perfect for either single color, two-color, or four-color process work. Nova 4 & 5 "GLX" are currently our two best heatset blacks. Nova "ET" Series Heatset Black & Colors Nova 2, 3, 4 & 5 "ET" black and colors are formulated for above average scuff resistance. Use Nova "ET" series heatset black and colors when you encounter unusual "buildup" or scuff-off in the folder or later in the bindery. Nova "ET" black and colors are available as "special order" products only. Nova "TFI" Series Heatset Black & Colors Available Colors Process Blue Process Red Process Yellow Process Black Nova 4 & 5 TFI black and colors are formulated for extreme scuff resistance. Use Nova "TFI" series heatset black and colors for any type of work involving problematic "matte coated" stocks, such as those found in software manuals, fine books and publications, or atlases. Nova 4 & 5 TFI black and colors are available as "special order" products only. 14

All new resins, oils, pigments and manufacturing technology go into one of the most cost-effective set of heatset inks on the world market today. Econotherm has 90% of the overall quality of our Nova series inks at 75% of the cost.. There is only one standard in the Econotherm line, the Econotherm NS Series which is similar in strength and shade to our Nova series of premium heatset inks. Any other Econotherm colors and black are made to match wet samples submitted to us. Prices are based solely on what it costs us to match the samples you submit. Econotherm NS series inks are a reasonably good substitute for our Nova premium heatset series of inks, but at a lower price. These inks will work well for end-users looking for the most value rather than prestige. NOTE: Econotherm inks are not available in a base color system for mixing...see Nova 4 PS. Soytex "LZR" inks are specially modified versions of Soytex inks available in a full range of base mixing colors, black and extender. Unlike regular Soytex inks, the LZR series features enhanced drying characteristics and high solids content: both properties necessary for a successful laser-ready ink. Soytex LZR inks get their extra drying "kick" from a liberal addition of Chinawood Oil (aka: "Tung" oil). Well known as nature s most aggressive drying oil, Chinawood Oil helps Soytex LZR inks air-dry to a tougher, more durable film than regular Soytex inks, which dry primarily by penetration. Within 72 hours after impression, Soytex LZR inks polymerize enough to satisfactorily withstand the fuser roller temperatures found in most laser printers and copiers without resoftening. Soytex LZR inks will stay open in the can for weeks at a time, yet start polymerizing within hours after impression. Also, metallic driers can be added to Soytex LZR to speed up drying to 24 hours. Maxi Set is a rubber base substitute, intended to be used on small offset Maxi Set is a Kerley Ink exclusive. The first thing we need to let you know is that Maxi Set is not an acrylic-based ink! Maxi Set is unique only to Kerley Ink. Maxi Set can be used anywhere the ink must stay open overnight, set to a tack-free finish in minutes, and be compatible with integrated dampening systems. All of the Maxi Set inks have a very high tack, excellent flow and phenomenally good ink/water balance. Maxi Set Black and Colors are not like conventional oil-based sheetfed inks, either. Unlike oil-based inks, Maxi Set does not rely upon vegetable oils as a major component. The Maxi Set drying mechanism is identical to the drying mechanism employed by rubber based inks. Maxi Set starts to dry the second it is printed on paper when the solvent in Maxi Set starts to penetrate into the substrate, leaving a dry pigment and resin layer on top of the sheet. Speedex sets at truly supersonic speeds! "Speedex" - the press-ready commercial litho ink that dries setoff-free in less than 2 minutes, yet stays open on the press overnight and fresh in the can for days. Speedex is a unique sheetfed offset printing ink with features that printers really want. Speedex features: The ability to be used right out of the can. Extremely fast initial setting. Jobs printed with Speedex on paper can be handled 5 minutes after impression. Speedex develops good cure in less than 72 hours. Speedex can stay "open" on press overnight, even on copper rollers. Speedex will not "skin" in a covered can for days. Speedex uses a drier-free setting mechanism. Speedex's cure rate and hardness can be greatly enhanced with driers. Speedex has approximately 20% VOC content: low enough for use in California. Speedex works well on a wide variety of stocks including quality offset stocks, and coated stocks of virtually all basis weights. Since Speedex is a true oil-based litho ink, it has a great deal of compatibility with many graphic arts chemicals. Ink conditioners and gel reducers will all work well with Speedex inks. Speedex contains high-melt polyethylene wax and a small amount of PTFE wax. This means that, with the proper precautions, Speedex can be used with or without overprinting right out of the can. Speedex 4 PRS has a tack of points at 1200 RPM. Consult the Speedex pamphlet for more details. Press-ready quickset sheetfed base colors are available at a tack of 15 points (1200 RPM). All colors have been balanced to the PANTONE * blending system and making color blends is a snap. A suitable transparent extender for all Speedex colors is our Speedex Extender found in our Ink Components catalog. All Speedex 4 PRS base colors are available in kits for immediate delivery. Speedex 4 dense Black The first of a new generation of inks to utilize the new "Crystagloss QS" technology. Using this new non-gel, hyper-solubilized, unsaturated resin system, Speedex 4 DENSE black can reach new heights of transfer, print density and gloss for virtually any litho ink application. Due to its controlled wax content, Speedex 4 DENSE black can be overprinted with water-based, conventional and UV-cured coatings having good post-cure adhesion. While initial setting and turnaround speed are still well within one hour, this ink will produce print densities that have to be seen to be believed.
