1 Patient Education Compression Stockings Resource list for western Washington and tips about wearing and washing This handout lists vendors in western Washington that carry compression stockings. Codes after resource names indicate the following: = Authorized for custom measuring. Also supply all compression stockings: 30-40, 20-30, 15-20, (L) = Limited. Supply ready-to-wear stockings: 30-40, 20-30, 15-20, 8-15 only. This handout also lists tips about caring for your stockings, putting them on, taking them off, and washing them. You have received a prescription for compression stockings. The prescription gives details about what type of stockings to obtain for your needs. Take the prescription with you when you go to buy stockings. Check with your insurance provider to find out if stockings are covered. Medicare only covers stocking if they are prescribed for open skin ulcers. Ready-to-wear stockings cost about $40 to $100. Custom stockings can cost as much as $600 a pair. With proper care, most stockings last about 6 months. Here is a list of vendors in western Washington. University of Washington Medical Center does not suggest or endorse a specific vendor. 4 Care Tips for Your Take proper care of your stockings to avoid getting runs, snags or holes in them and so they will last a long time. Treat them just like a delicate garment. Avoid contact with sharp objects. Jewelry and fingernails often cause runs, snags and holes. Keep your stockings away from direct sunlight and high heat. Follow the tips below and on the next page for putting them on, taking them off, and washing them. How to Put Your On 1. Remove all jewelry, including rings, bracelets and watches. 2. Some stocking brands do not permit use of creams and lotions. If this is the case with your stockings, remove all cream or lotion from your feet and legs. 3. Put on rubber gloves or try latex or latex-free surgical gloves. This helps to protect your stockings from sharp jewelry and fingernails. 4. It may help to roll the top of the stocking toward the bottom before putting it on. 5. Gently inch the stocking up using your fingers and palms of your hands. Do not pull hard on your stockings. This can stretch the fabric and ruin the compression feature of the stockings. 6. Keep the pressure even as you inch the stockings up and do not twist or rotate your stockings. If they become twisted, gently unroll them and start over. 7. Remove the gloves and put your jewelry back on. How to Take Your Off 1. Remove all jewelry. 2. Put your gloves on. 3. Gently peel back your stockings, like removing a peel from a banana, and ease them over your heels with the palms of your hands. 4. Remove the gloves and put your jewelry back on.
5 Questions? Call Your questions are important. Call your doctor or health care provider if you have questions or concerns. UWMC Clinic staff are also available to help at any time. How to Wash Most stockings can be machine-washed. If you choose this option, use a garment bag and wash them on the delicate cycle. Hand washing will likely help your stockings last longer. With either method, wash your stockings daily. For hand washing, use a mild soap. Tru-Kleen is a brand made especially for elasticized fabric. Rinse well in warm water, taking care to remove all soap. Dry your stockings by rolling them in a towel to remove excess water. Do not wring or stretch the fabric. Do not leave your stockings rolled up in the towel. Do not dry your stockings in the dryer. Hang your stockings to dry, away from direct sunlight and heat. q : q Surgical Specialties: q Box N.E.
