Abstract 01

For designers in any field, one of the most important things before completion of a given work is to draw inspiration from real life for their design. Such inspirations may come from snapshots of life or from designer s personal life experiences. As subjective inspiration comes from objective life, designers need to observe a lot and think a lot. Since different designer has different aesthetic judgment and mode of thinking, therefore, their reflections and impressions of a certain thing or a given scenario might be totally different resulting in significantly different design works. Combining my own life experiences, my feelings and impressions of my surrounding environments with what I have learned in class, I hope to bring about positive energy through my designs, a positive power source to motivate everyone to work hard for a happy life. As always, young people tend to like and accept things that they use or have contact with daily. More recently, trendy fashions had quickly become ever and ever popular for the younger generations., But there are a whole range of varieties of clothing, and different clothing may have hundreds and thousands of different brands. And I simply want to make use of my life experience to design trendy fashions. To design my own trendy brand, as a designer, I must have my own initiative ideas, and my design works must represent my unique character, style and attitude to life. Based on such a concept, my inner feelings will be embodied in my design works. All the positive energies I wish to pass on to young people will be seen on my trendy Dream-Big T-shirts, through which my design ideas can better integrate into the lives of young people, who will in turn come to like my design works more and more. But to be received and liked by young people, in addition to design and fashion style, the intentions of the design is also very important, as a design work without an intention or a purpose would simply be an empty shell. The most needed positive energy in young people s lives are best advices and encouragement for them to choose and follow the right path to realize their life dreams, especially at times when they feel a bit lost or unsure of future life directions. Therefore, a popular fashion brand with a favorite brand story can really fit into their lives and hearts.

AIM: To design an illustration based t-shirt brand/label to encourage young people to chase their dreams.

objectives: Research brand and t-shrit illustration style, image text and outcomes. Investigate how other designer use to communicate and design products for young people. Develop a visual language that encourage young people to be time effective, chase their dreams. Methods: Research cartoon style line art Research fashion brands Research color matching

Framing the Project 02

According to my design inspiration, I intend to design an independent fashion brand, the brand's main products are T-shirts, plus some accessories such as hats/caps and environment-friendly shopping bags. My brand will not be just simple clothes. Instead, it is a brand with rich intended meaning both in content and spirit. Each item will be imprinted with my design LOGO, and each T-shirt patterns will be telling an inspiring story. So, My T-shirts will not be just simple clothes. They will mean a lot more to people wearing them. The contents of my design project mainly come from the inspiration of life, made up of a series of stories, with a cartoon character as its hero. For this purpose, I need to hand-paint a cartoon character, formed by simple black outline. The cartoon character will be set in five different scenes and backgrounds, with patterns and simple words, designed to make people understand the implications of my designs. In order to better attract young people s attention, I will add bright colors to my cartoon images by filling up the simple character lines with bright colors to highlight the features of cartoon characters. In addition to color blend for the cartoon characters, color matching and color contrast will also be employed for surrounding environment to depict a complete story.

Intention &Outcome 03

Drawing My design exploration is closer to the real lives of people around me, with inspirations drawn from real life people s emotions and hard work in pursuit of their objectives. I attempt to use material substance to reflect what is on people s mind. A common phenomenon at the moment is that a lot of young people are a bit confused about their future. In order to effectively help them, I have come up with the idea to design my own trendy fashion brand which will appeal to young consumers as a touchable inspirational power source for them. I had always wanted to design my own brand in light of such a spirit. I had investigated the design styles of some of the best-known brands, and found that trendy T-shirt brands are most close to youth life and adored by young people. Thus, my goal is to integrate the spirits of important influences to young minds and lives with my T-shirt designs, which will be a direct source of inspiration for them.

Process Investigation of the reasons why some young people feel lost or confused with their life; Conceive and plot story series full of inspirational spirits, Draw inspirations from famous design brands seen on the internet or in the streets Design characters for story series. To make it eye-catching, hand-painted, colourful and vivid cartoon images will be used to make my story-based inspirational T-shirt brand.

New ways of seeing I originally intend to design my T-shirts combining reality with fictions. But after library and internet researches, I choose to focus and position my designs on real life trends. Through studying some well-known brands, I have found my design direction and acquired lots of design ideas. I will include a dream-pursuit story into my T-shirt designs, and turn my T-shirts into good story-tellers.

Formal conventions 04

As single montage of a few key images of research that informs and frames my SP6 project is created and presented. The montage is responded by me through developing keywords for each image I present and be prepared to articulate them during my SGT. For example, the quotation You have seconds in a day, how will you spend it? Don t waste it. This quotation inspired the young people work out in fulfilling their dream, and the picture attached with this quotation provided a clock that telling the people time is running, they have to chase their dreams before time pass away. There is also quotation of work hard dream big, therefore the people are inspired to dream big, as when they have the effort to work hard. The quotes used in the montage as presented in the formal conventions will provide high aspirations but hot convincing as to using a T-shirt to express so many great ideas and motivations to the young people are so wonderful.

Making Connections 05

Daydream Daydreams refer to fantasies and images popping up in the brain while one is still awake, which are usually happy thoughts, hopes or ambitions. Daydreams are sometimes future scenarios or plans, or memories of the past like scenes in a real dream, and may sometimes be more disturbing to one s mood. We all have daydreams and we are often excellent and outstanding in our daydreams, but may not be so in our real lives. It might be difficult to turn a daydream into reality, but isn t it easier to turn some of our daydreams into goals of pursuit? The theme of my project is about dreams, and as there are many similarities between dreams and daydreams, I have been pondering the thought, Won t it be more interesting and challenging to blend some daydreams into my design?

Visual language Visual language is the most basic design element that requires the use of a wide range of graphics and/or texts to convey the ideas and meanings of one s works. Text is the main tool for recording and expressing emotional communications between humans, which is also an extremely effective visual communication language. Graphics is the best way to render us the visual beauty of expression. Its role is to attract people s attention and arouse psychological reactions of the viewers so as to achieve the desired effects of fashion, personality and cultural connotation from graphic designs of the T-shirts. Visual language is very important in my project, as each word or image reflects the content and meaning of my works. As I wish to give my works more profound meanings, I would like to design T-shirts with five different styles of visual language to express dream-pursuing steps. I think one style might be monotonous and boring.

T-shirt culture As young people grow up generation after generation, the passion for T-shirt has never faded and the diversity of T-shirt printing is just as rich as it had been in the past. T-shirt designs are not just to please one s eyes and hearts. In other words, T-shirt designs are expected to convey some sorts of emotion or stance through graphic designs, texts and good use of colours. Such emotion can be happiness, love, respect, contempt or anger; such stance can be rebellion, opposition or support. Such designs require more passions than skills, and only calls for love and beauty from the heart can be genuine and sincere enough to impress the crowd that care about us. And that s why I choose T-shirt to show my project, as it is a highly impressive personal belonging that can be designed in so many different ways

Making Connections 06

Project Research Objectives To design an illustration based t-shirt brand/label to encourage young people to chase their dreams.this research project has the objectives of making a T-shirt brand that can encourage the young people in chasing and realizing their dreams. The research project has the objective of providing new ideas and dream fulfillment idea to the young people. Since that the T-shirt design is made for the purpose in expressing our inner emotions, in which more meaningful ideas are expressed in it, therefore no longer normal clothes. To fulfill the main purpose of encouraging the young people in chasing and realizing their dreams, the objectives toward making this T-shirt brand include expressing the word of dream through naming the brand DREAM BIG, telling all the people that everyone has their own stories. Project Research Methods In order to make sure the purposes and the objectives of research can be fulfilled, the research project is done through using the methods of designing the T-shirt brand of DREAM BIG, concept and style as expressed in the T-shirt painting, pattern and color. My own language can be expressed in it with this kind of designation, in which my language is expected to be understood by the young people who see the T-shirt. I tried to use interview survey of primary research method in looking out the young people s through heart (why they felt disappointed). On the other hand, I tried to use secondary research method through focusing on young people hobbies in previous researches done in the form of book, journals, and internet resources.

Project deliverables 07

Project deliverables are the tangible products generated from a project. Without deliverables, projects would be pointless; deliverables are why projects are created. In my project, the tangible products generated from this project are my T-shirt brand DREAM BIG. As where I producing the products for those young people, both the product and the brand name are my deliverables. When designing this T-shirt, I provide dream fantasies and images elements into it. The product fulfills the objective of this research project through delivering thoughts to the young people that their dreams can be fulfilled. The graphic design of the T-shirt renders the visual beauty of expression to the people that viewing it. The T-shirts with five different styles of visual language are designed to express dream-pursuing steps that fulfilling the main objective of this research. The T-shirts are having more profound meanings as there are five styles delivering five different concepts but same directions of motivating the young people, instead of just one style of T-shirt. The product is providing new style and designs of the T-shirts that are favorable in the mind of the young people. I strongly use my T-shirt designs to convey some sorts of emotion or stance.

Project Reflections 08

As described before, DREAM BIG is my design brand. The key issues involve what sort of message I wish to impress audience at the first sight of the LOGO and my T-shirts, and in what ways shall I convey such messages that will be an integral part of my brand design? How can I ffectively integrate patterns with words to reveal the inspiring story that I wish the audience would really understand and draw aspiration and strength from? Through my research, I believe it will be a good idea to blend some local cultural elements and popular hobbies of the youth into my designs so as to make them more eye-catching and appealing to young people in local communities. But it will not be an easy task to blend such elements into my designs for people to easily understand my true design intention/purpose. The challenge is there, and I will exert my best efforts to give it a go.

The meaningless life can be meaningful when you have a goal to fight on.

Project Background 01

The word trendy is often used to describe young people. In this era, regardless their nationalities, young people like to chase current trends and be regarded as trendy. Trends cover a wide range of topics, and fashion/clothes are simply one of the most explicit ways to express trends. Many famous designers have established their own trendy brands, and each of such brands has its own design concepts and themes. Of course, different trendy brands have different ways of expressions, such as use of simple linear design, letters or cartoons. Cartoon characters are one of the most intuitive and eye-catching forms of expression that can be easily accepted and appreciated by the youth. They were my source of design inspiration, and I have designed a story series centered on a cute cartoon to inspire and encourage young people to pursue their dreams bravely. At the moment, many young fellows around us have forgotten about their previous aspirations and dreams, living a passionless dull and numb life. They are either gradually giving up hope for their dreams or simply lacking the courage to pursue their dreams. Therefore, I hope to influence such young people with my trendy and fashionable cartoon-story-based brand to revive their dreams and work hard for their potential talents.

Design Requirement 02

I wish to convey positive energy with patterns and words of my design. The patterns will use bright and contrast colors to highlight the cartoon image. So, I need to create a series of patterns to cover a whole story, which tells young people that they can realize their beautiful dreams if they dare to challenge their difficulties and find ways to overcome whatever difficulties life has thrown into our way. Therefore, to make it easily comprehensible to my young customers, I need to use simple words to accompany different patterns, and blend some well-known stories into such designs so as to make them appealing to young people and win over their hearts.

Design Deliverables 03

T-shirts I will design a cartoon character to be printed on T-shirts with simple words. The intended five different T-shirts will have five different patterns of cartoon characters at the front, and have my mini-worded design logo printed at the back, so that the public can readily see through my design concept and logo. Poster I will also design a poster. The poster will show the end result of the cartoon hero of my story series. Also, the poster will use bright patterns accompanied by simple text, which will be eye-catching as well as display the true meaning of my design themes.

Flyer In addition, I'll make a flyer, which will carry my unique design logo and a QR code I design will be printed on clear above, and I'll be on a flyer printed on QR codes. This will help to impress people with the uniqueness of my design brand as well as advocate and promote directly my design themes.

Cap Hats and caps will be an indispensable part of my design, which are popular clothing accessories for young people. I will also design some shopping bags. And like the hats and caps, the shopping bags of different colors will also contain my design logo with simple words. These items are complementary to my fashion brand, as hats/caps and shopping bags are also effective ways to drive home my design brand and theme stories.

Target Audience 04

I have done extensive market research and surveys with my young friends and classmates, and found out that most young people within the age group of 15 to 26 would like to buy fashion brand clothing, and some of them are even a bit fanatic about fashion brand, as they think that trendy fashion brands vigorously represent youth and can be symbolic of one s individual personality. Whether in Asia or in the West, many young people are fond of trendy fashion works by designers from different countries, and many young consumers like to buy brand T-shirts, hats/ caps and bags. But most young people do not really understand or know the true meaning of those brands. Therefore, I will design my fashion brand 'DREAM BIG' with cartoon images to tell my theme story series and intuitively express my true meaning. This will make it easier for young people to accept and like my designs, which will remind and encourage young people to pursue their dreams any time they put on their favorite fashionable T-shirts. Such trendy T-shirts would mean more than mere fashion clothing to young fellows, but also a symbol of living a passionate life and working hard to realize one's cherished dreams.

Sector Insights 05

A Bathing ape Patterns are the most important part in my design, which will be matched with some suitable words to form a complete design format. Every fashion designer has his/her own exclusive image patterns and would use his/her representative LOGO in their clothing designs, but occasionally other styles of design may be evolved based on those typical images. For example, change in colors, or blending other elements into the images. Paul frank Paul Frank s design appears to be no more than simple line drawings, but the color combination of his designed image is prominent. He is capable of highlighting the dominant role of the monkey in his design through skillful use of vivid shades of red, green and blue, which are colors frequently seen in colorful work.

TOKIDOKI ToKIDoki brand images are good examples of innovative design, in which he was able to blend some other design elements with any kind of common image to present a vivid, brand new design style, especially in the skillful use of colors, enabling the whole design to bring some freshness to the audience. For example, common cactuses and doughnuts had been turned into clothes for the little animals, and wonderful color combination is an absolutely eye-catching highlight in the world of ToKIDoki.

Moreover, classic cartoon characters such as those of Tom and Jerry, the Smurfs, Snoopy, the Adventures of Tintin also account for a large part of the design, making me to believe that good designers do not have to rely on complicated human characters to attract the attention of the audience. So I get my inspiration from these works, as cartoons can help people to understand the true meaning of the design work in a more light and joyful heart.

Brand Purpose 06

I want to design a fashion brand that will be liked and easily accepted by young people. The direction and theme of my design will be aimed at young people, and my brand theme will have a special meaning attached to it, Dream Big. The reason that I would like to use my designs to encourage young people to pursue their dreams is because I have seen some of my friends, either from overseas or being a local Kiwi, seem to be a bit confused about their life. Some of them really do not really know why they are taking their majors at university, or even worse, a few of them even hate what they are studying and have no ideas at all about what sort of job might be available to them after leaving campus. Most of my friends told me that they took their major as they think it might be a good major to help them find a good job in the future, or simply to please their parents as it is their choice of major for him/her, or just randomly picking up a major to get a diploma. Everyone is a bit shy of saying what one really likes to study from the bottom of one s heart, and forces oneself to accept what one is forced to learn, thus living a passionless and numb life, destined to be filled with sorrow and regrets when one grows older. Therefore, my brand stories will be aimed to inspire every confused youth to rediscover their real self, to bravely speak up about what they really feel like for themselves, i.e., their true dreams for a decent life. I am not talking about any fantasies or unrealistic ambitions. I mean to unveil and ignite those hidden aspirations that all young people at my age might have. The message I wish to convey to them through my design is that life is comparatively short, and there is no point to be afraid of any contempt from on-lookers or resentments from one's parents. Be brave and actively and boldly pursue our dreams and never be afraid of failures as long as we maintain the courage to stand up and keep trying, as success might just be around the corner.

Brand Attitude 07

Dreams Each of the designs and images is not just a simple pattern, which represents either a meaningful story or particular mood. Dreams are the sources of inspiration for my designs. Different stories and meanings form up different designs, and different cartoon characters in my design aspire for different dreams.

Brand cooperation In order to seek new breakthrough or enhance one s own designs, some designers may choose to blend styles of other brands into one's own work to create a brand new style. Hellokitty is a famous Japan cartoon character, and the designer often chooses to cooperate with other name brand products in the world so as to produce a new design effect, appealing to new customer groups as well as expanding his own fame.

Colours Good colour matching helps to highlight the entire design image. Famous fashion brands are all good at using bright colors that will impress the audience at first sight. Skillful use of different color combination and contrast can bring life to otherwise dull and characterless image, and highlight the soul and the essence of one s design works.

Brand Positioning 08

Dreams Dreams are the most important part of my work. Without dreams as my design themes, it would be hard for people to understand what messages I am trying to deliver with those patterns. Obstacles/Difficulties When faced with obstacles and difficulties, we might fall into a dilemma or disappointment, but this should be any reason for us to give up hope or even our dreams. As soon as we find a solution to overcome such obstacles or difficulties, they would appear to be not that tough at all. So, we need to face and challenge all obstacles/ difficulties with a smiling face and an unshakeable determination to turn the table around in our favor.

Brand Story 09

KID was a seemingly shy and timid boy, not good at expressing himself and always liked to hide his face with the brim of his cap, but had always been cherishing some sweet little dreams. One day when he realized that he had been able to live a numb life each day without having to look up at the sky, he fell into a deep thought. He could hear a faint call from the bottom of his heart, That is not the real you, KID. Be brave! Break out of your shell and get a real life! KID was thus awakened and determined to give himself a new meaning for his life. He wants to live a passionate life, full of smiles and work hard to realize his long-cherished sweet little dreams. So he summed up his courage to leave his home and set out for a new life adventure. KID was now on his way to his dreamland, but the path to his dreamland was not as easy as he thought it might be. He was walking in a strange and misty jungle. But he was not frightened, and smartly ignited and lifted up a torch to drive away the fog ahead of him. He knew that he had to live up to all challenges and difficulties before he could eventually realize his dreams. Later on, when he run into giant and dangerous beasts such as dinosaurs, he was not scared to death, but rather bravely fought with and beat the dinosaur powered by his determination to get to his dreamland. Such life-journey experiences gave him great experience in overcoming obstacles and difficulties with an unbendable will, and it seemed to him that the roads ahead of him were appearing to be wider and easier. His confidence level began to soar, and he dared to jump up to challenge the basketball hoop much higher than himself and slam a basketball into it. Also, he was now willing to make new friends, and helped KIWI birds to realize their dreams. Step by step he realized that chasing one s dream wasn't that difficult at all, just like Mario eating gold coins, who was able to clime onto a new height through hard work and endless efforts. Finally he climbed onto the peak of his dreamland! Taking a deep breath of fresh air and overlooking everything beneath his feet, he took off the cap he had been wearing all the time and lifted his head high to have a good look of the blue sky above him.

Brand Single Organizing Idea 10

The design concept originated from my own experience. I was also a bit confused about what to study in university after leaving high school. I took the advice of some friends and my family, but found myself lacking real interests in my major. It was a dull and disappointing feeling and I felt like I was marking around and wasting my valuable youth and time. I felt depressed and was afraid to disappoint my family. But I just wanted to listen to my inner voice, and I wanted to chase my dreams, because I knew that I would try my best to do the things I really feel like to do. I eventually set out to chase my dreams and managed to stay on track for my dreams. But there are still friends around me who are living a confused and numb life, and there are younger friends who will be facing the same tough choices that I had experienced before. So I tell myself that I might be able to do something to help them. I choose to design trendy fashions to inspire and encourage young people to stay on track for their dreams, as like a mobile billboard, trendy fashions can be easily accepted by young people. Use of a cartoon character for a story series coupled with simple words is intuitive and easy to understand, which I hope will inspire many youth to strive for and ultimately realize their cherished dreams.
