13 Faculty First Summer Scholarship Support (PI) - Project title: Consumer s Attachment to Clothing from a Sustainable Perspective - PI: Seoha Min - Amount requested: $ 4,830 TEACHING STATEMENT PEDAGOGICAL PHILOSOPHY I am a strong advocate for fostering problem-solving skills in apparel design. To be a successful designer, students must be critical and creative thinkers who can identify and research problems, and then find innovative solutions. In this respect, I strive to challenge students in my class to research users background, identify issues users have with apparel design, and generate a solution to the problem. To nurture technology-savvy design professionals, I also strive to introduce technologies that best serve the purpose of the classes, including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Lectra Modaris, and Browzwear V- Stitcher. TEACHING FORMAT Most of my classes are studio-based which best serves my pedagogical philosophy. Studio classrooms have longer class sessions with focused and intense student activity. Following the individual or group activities, I usually hold peer-to-peer review and critiques where students discuss each other s work. I believe this interactive classroom promotes holistic skills, including creativity, critical thinking and inquiry, as well as self-reflection by students, all of which greatly enhances their problem-solving skills. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Assistant Professor, Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies, the UNCG August present - CRS 242 Design Principles and Technologies (Required course, combination of lab and lecture) CRS 242 guides students to understand the application of the elements and principles of design to analysis of textile products and solution of design problems.
