Leather and leather products industry is one the prominent private sectors, creating the maximum added value in Turkey s economy. Can we get a general assessment of the current situation regarding the leather industry? Leather and leather products industry is one the prominent private sectors, creating the maximum added value in Turkey s economy. Our Leather and leather products industry, carries about 10 times more value-added export than the overall exports in Turkey. In leather and fur ready-to-wear, this ratio can go up to about 100 times the average of Turkey. With our valueadded products, as leather and leather product sector which we define as a strategic industry in order to promote the Turkish brand, we represent our sector and country in the most accurate way in the international arena. In this context, our leather and leather products sector; can export quality products from our target markets to US $ 52 unit price, to Denmark at $ 67 unit price, to South Korea, which is 8 thousand kilometers away from Turkey, with $ 40 unit price.. Our sector, which provides employment to more than 60 thousand people, besides its value-added exports, has an important place in the manufacturing industry with its annual production value of 15 billion TL. pre-fighter jet crisis period. With our high accelerated export figures we achieved in 2018, we set our export target for 2019 as $ 1.9 billion. We foresee that USD 1 billion of our export target of USD 1.9 billion will be realized in the footwear sector. In 2018, where we put the market diversity at the focal point of our export targets, it was also pleasing for us to reach the highest export data figures of all times we have actualized from our strategic markets to Africa. In this context, The year 2019, which we aim to realize the highest leather and leather products exports of all time, is very important for us in terms of our market diversity targets that we can realize sustainable export. For this reason, we aim to reach the highest export record of all time in EU and Asia while aimin to crown our record with 07 Can you share the performance in 2018 and the objectives of 2019 of the sector in terms of export as İstanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters Association (İDMİB) As leather and leather products industry, we realized exports to 180 countries, worth about 1.7 billion dollars with an increase of 9.5 percent in Our leather and leather products sectors, which has experienced an export increase in 60% of our export markets, has exported the highest leather and leather products of all time to Africa in this period, as we have targeted, our sector. Our exports to Africa, where we exported leather and leather products worth $ 125 million in 2018,has increased 10 times since 2008.Besides, our leather and leather products export to our biggest export market, which is Russia, reached $ 255 million, exceeding the

08 The competition nowadays is done through R & D, innovation and design power. In this context, we have to make high value-added production and branding to make a difference. Are there any efforts on the diversification of the leather product range except leathercraft, shoes and leather ready- to- wear? As leather and leather products sector, we are manufacturing and exporting value-added products in many product groups ranging from shoes to leather - fur garments, from leathercrafts to semi finished, finished leather and trimmed fur. In this context, our shoe sector exports, which reached the highest export value of all times in 2018, increased by 15.6 percent with exports worth $ 888 million.on the other hand, in our leather and fur garment industry, which we perform value-added exports about 100 times more than the average of Turkey, we broke the record in the history of Turkish Republic ever in exporting to American Continent with the export of 25.4 million dollars.the unit prices of the semi-finished, finished leathers and trimmed furs, have increased threefold over the last 10 years, reaching the highest value of all time with 13 dollars.as a leather and leather goods sector, we will continue our efforts to break the export records and increase our share in the world market in the coming period through rich product variety. How do you position Turkey in the context of design and branding excluding its production strength in leather trade? The competition nowadays is done through R & D, innovation and design power. In this context, we have to make high valueadded production and branding to make a difference. Because production can be realized in many countries of the world, what makes these countries unique is their designs and brands. As Turkish Leather and leather products sector, we are proud to have pioneered the concept of design and branding to get settled in Turkey. In this context, As İDMİB, we increase the perception of our sector towards design by organizing design competitions every year, in for one year shoes, one year leather ready-to-wear and leathercrafts. In the competitions we carry out, we award the winners with trainings by sending them to international fairs. In other words, we lead our designers to globalize and open up to the world.besides, we are conducting studies for our companies to follow the world trends in our industry by actualizing trend seminars and workshops with international designers for our member companies every year. In this context, our sector, which exports much more added value than the biggest leather and leather products suppliers in the world. Our sector we will continue to increase our success and increase the ranking in the world market together with branding - design activities. What are the activities in the sector regarding sustainability?can you give us information about R & D and innovation activities? As İDMİB, at the core of our short and long term vision programme, there is Sustainable Export program. In this context, we find 2019 very important in terms of our market diversity targets that we can realize sustainable export. As İDMİB, we conduct many studies within the scope of R & D and innovation activities. We had a productive year with the marketing activities and trainings of our 3 P & D projects realized with our Trade Center and 65 member companies, the shoe design competition, that was held third time and received very intense application, the National Participation Organizations, we actualize in the world s most prestigious fairs such as Micam, Lineapelle, APLF, the procurement committees that we have realized simultaneously with our international fairs visited by participants from many parts of the world in our country.

In 2018, we brought our member companies together with international buyers almost every 3 weeks. Also in 2019, we will continue to proceed at an equal rate in the promotion of our sector, which we take it much further each year, P&D projects, national participation organizations to fairs, procurrement committees and design competitions. In addition to all these activities, as İDMİB, we will get Social Compliance Consultancy services for our member companies in order to increase sustainability in our sector. We aim to provide the social compliance consultancy, inclusive of occupational health and safety, management systems, discrimination, payments and rights, contract labor, supply chain management and human rights to 100 member companies more in our P & D projects, in addition to our cluster companies. In this context, our member companies will complete their deficiencies in knowing their rights and obligations in order to be in compliance with international standards and they will be able to realize more value-added exports with the certificates they have in the competitive system. In order for our companies to realize sustainable export in the sector, We will carry out projects of great importance that will encourage our companies to complete the social compliance criteria by spreading our project to the base in the medium term. 09

Textile Engineer works in various departments such as production departmant such as yarn, weaving, knitting, dye-finishing, garment, spunlace or R & D, P&D, planning and marketing. First of all, can you tell us about textile engineering, what does a textile engineer do? Textile Engineer works in various departments such as production departmant such as yarn, weaving, knitting, dyefinishing, garment, spunlace or R & D, P&D, planning and marketing. They are responsible for problem solving, product / process / system design, efficiency and quality enhancing, costreducing stuff. In areas such as Planning, Marketing, Design and Software, highly qualified textile engineers handle the job.at the same time, the number of entrepreneurial textile engineers who own their business is increasing day to day.. Our country has an important place in Europe and in the world in terms of textiles. What are the contributions of our engineers in achieving this success? Textile production has a long history including Bursa in particular and Turkey in general. Textile production works as technology-intensive garment production and laborintensive.textile production is technologically renewed and most businesses are using the latest technologies. Textile engineers, by using these new technologies, and by designing new products, processes and systems, fulfills the responsibility of completing the production in a high quality, efficient and timely manner. In addition, they contribute to technological development by carrying out projects in R & D centers, design centers and P&D departments. By taking part in the sales marketing teams, they also contribute to system with their competences in understanding the customer demands and transferring them to production. R & D studies. The new R & D assistance also stimulated institutional and development-oriented textile companies that are open for improvement. It is obvious that with the existing conventional products, textile cannot continue or will continue to shrink. Even in the last 5-year development plan, China has shown the issue of technical textiles as a development goal, which supports the Turkish textile sector and should motivate the Turkish textile sector to create strategies. R & D studies have recently started to be more prominent. In order to increase the number of R & D and design centers, the support of the establishment of these centers by the state has made very positive contributions.according to 2016 data, the ratio of R & D expenditures in the budget is seen as 0.94%, the first goal is to exceed 1% and the main goal is to reach the level of 3% in developed countries. Textile engineers are one of the basic elements to make R & D studies. However, a limited number of companies are conducting real R & D activities, while most companies are producing products away from this consciousness. Their success stories are expected to be encouraging.. 11 Do our companies give enough attention to textile engineers and R & D activities? How do you evaluate our global position on this sense? The constant condition of development and existence is change. Of course, the companies that share this point of view attach great importance to textile engineers and

12 Would you like to share your opinion about the yarns, fabrics, products of Bursa in brief, which is the capital of textile? Can you make an assessment in terms of Bursa s vision in textiles? Bursa can be called the synthetic production center. In terms of polyester yarn production, Turkey has the largest production capacity. It is also the largest center in the production of home textiles. In addition, there are a large number of enterprises that produce to national and international major store chains. In recent years, the development of the baby apparel industry can not be ignored in this sense.bursa textile industry, due to multiple production areas and a wealth of technological infrastructure, is one of Turkey s most assertive centers. In terms of supporting this structure, Bursa has a privileged position with its two large test and analysis centers, such as Butekom Textile Excellence Center and Tubitak Butal. Although the quality of production, technological infrastructure competences and qualified technical staff capacity are some of its strengths, Bursa should be targeted to reach the same size as a trade center. The selection of Bursa for the aerospace and defense industry, which is one of the new attraction areas, will open new horizons for many companies in their future vision.. A great deal of work falls to Textile Engineers on the subject of Sustainability and recycling for the healthy future of humanity and nature which is very important nowadays. What is your opinion on that? Textile production is really polluting nature with the wastes it produces. Wastes with production output have been released irresponsibly and carelessly into the air, water and soil for many years. Since 2000 s, awareness of the protection of nature affecting the whole world, the influences of environmentalist approaches, and the imposition of sustainability of big store chains have also pushed textile manufacturers to take measures and make improvements on this issue. In this present situation, the green market just stands in front of Turkey a huge opportunity. The Turkish textile and apparel industry, which makes production to customers who want quality products, provides a great advantage by using environmentally friendly production techniques. In recent years, there are researches that have been carried out on the use of natural materials. Bamboo is the currently known raw material. Many known plant forms, such as hemp, corn, silk, stinging netle, are being investigated all over the world to be used as raw material in yarn or chemical production. Textile engineers undertook a very serious and important responsibility as technical staff who carry out these researches and follow the current innovations in the world and fulfill their environmental friendly production requirements. Finally, how does a textile engineer trained? What are your recommendations to youngsters who want to work and specialize in this field?

Textile production is really polluting nature with the wastes it produces. Wastes with production output have been released irresponsibly and carelessly into the air, water and soil for many years. Since 2000 s, awareness of the protection of nature affecting the whole world, the influences of environmentalist approaches, and the imposition of sustainability of big store chains have also pushed textile manufacturers to take measures and make improvements on this issue. In this present situation, the green market just stands in front of Turkey a huge opportunity. The most important factor, not only for a textile engineer, but an engineer to be trained well in his field, is carrying the drive of CURIOUSITY and RESEARCH in his inner world. Asking the WHY question and searching for the right answer and confirming the results by repeating the same process at least 3 times, observing the problems encountered in the area where the engineers who newly started to work are responsible for especially by seeing them personally and interpreting the results statistically are of great importance. In order to develop himself, he should treat the world as his rival along with Bursa and Turkey. For this he must know at least a foreign language enough to understand what he reads and can write what he thinks. Personally the sine quo non for an engineer that he either needs to work on the factory floor of the job to be involved in the production part or should desire to take part in the R&D or P&D activities of the work. The major problem of the textile engineer is that despite the intensive work pace, He cannot make a foresight about low wage policies and career plan applied by the sector. In this sense, we, as the chamber, say that we can make our voices heard at the rate of increasing our number. We say that the perception of textile should be improved by and large almost on every platform where we can be heard and collaborate with stakeholder institutions. Before I end up my words, textile will continue and this continuity will be maintained in different forms. That is why, young generations must realize that they have the knowledge of technical equipment to adapt to this change in the sharpest way possible. In this sense, I also think that a good cooperation should be made by taking advantage of the experiences of the sophisticatedol engineers. I would like to add that a textile sector, which has a high technical competence, sustainable production, respects the environment and uses eco-friendly products, will increase the brand value of Bursa. 13

INTERVIEW Sustainability has become one of the most trendy topics of our age. While this trend has been continuing in various countries abroad for a while, the social trends that we rapidly integrated ourselves through social media are also manifested in our country today. 30 Sustainability has become a very popular topic because of both human health, nature, and environmental factors. Can we get your views on this? Sustainability has become one of the most trendy topics of our age. While this trend has been continuing in various countries abroad for a while, the social trends that we rapidly integrated ourselves through social media are also manifested in our country today. In particular, the ultimate attention shown by our customers who work in B2C business model towards social sensitivities has influenced us as their main suppliers to the extent we had to add sustainability as a different category into our product gro Zups. What do actually do to maintain sustainability? Fabra has also accelerated its product development in the sustainable category, especially in the last 2 years. In this category, we use yarns made from organic natural fibers and recycled natural and synthetic fibers which are proven by certificates. In 2018, we developed approximately 20% of our total products in the sustainable category. Our difference here is that we combine sustainability with design and engineering. We produce colors, designs, and constructions suitable for the latest fashion trends with sustainable raw materials and current engineering applications. In this way, we are able to provide services to our customers with all of the topics that they may need today with various principles such as the difference in design, onschedule production, industry 4.0 and internet of things. How do you follow the developments in the sector? Do you conduct R & D studies on the subject? As is known, there are world famous companies that provide trend service for our sector. Our main trend source is WGSN, which is one of the agencies providing this service. WGSN, which tackles the notion of sustainability particularly and presents all developments in the world in both article and trend report form, is accessible to all of our employees. We carry out R & D and P & D activities in the light of these reports. In addition, we organize inhouse training to increase the awareness of our marketing and production departments on this issue.

31 What kind of developments can be experienced in textile and fashion in the future both in real and futuristic terms? What kind of clothing style will people have in years in the context of fabric, yarn, and design? It will accommodate social developments on the basis of any change in fashion. For this reason, it is necessary to follow the factors that change the societal habits in order to predict the future. Considering the changes occurred in our own lives in recent years, we will immediately realize that we have gained the habits of many new things. As these habits affect our daily lives, it will also change our clothing and shopping habits. Factors such as the change in the internet boutiques, functionality, consumption frequency, and trends and the development of technological expenditure methods have changed the traditional atmosphere in the sector, although without being aware of it. For example, the crypto coins that are used in online shopping, the smartwatches that follow your vital functions and simplify communication, the mobile applications that provide daily clothing and combining recommendations and enable you to buy at the same time, the Instagram stories that are limited to 15 seconds and are deleted in 24 hours, all of these give us hints about consumption trends. Now consumers are demanding continuity, difference, and innovation. In parallel with these, our products are aging very quickly due to competition, changing consumer habits and developing digital extensity. Therefore it will be almost impossible to serve with a limited product group in the coming years. While increasing the variety of products, we need to promote our companies and products with sustainability in production, social benefit projects, innovation, and technology.

INTERVIEW Turkey s first fashion trend forecasting and analytics agency is about to shape the industry Aiming to offer high-quality services in fashion trend forecasting and analysis in Turkey, Gona Trend is the first agency established within Altınbaş University Incubation Centre as well as the first professional institution to provide fashion trend-related services. 36 GONA TREND GONCA GÜL ÖZER Founder

INTERVIEW This idea has first originated from an ambition to meet the needs of fashion industry especially in terms of trend forecasting and analytics. Altınbaş University Incubation Centre provides support to start-ups with bright business ideas or projects. The first start-up of AU Incubation Centre has recently started its operations. The founder of Gona Trend, Gonca Gül Özer has a lot to say about this first agency to operate in fashion trend forecasting and design, We launched our agency in 2017 through a KOSGEB (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization of Turkey) support. This idea has first originated from an ambition to meet the needs of fashion industry especially in terms of trend forecasting and analytics. Combining my expertise in the field of fashion with my business partner Prof Dr. 38 Ahmet Mete Çilingirtürk s deep knowledge of statistics, we set out to create this fashion trend forecasting agency. The main driving factor that led us to pursue this dream was the absence of a professional agency offering trend forecasting services in Turkey despite the fact that our British and French counterparts such as WGSN, Trend Union, and NellyRodi are dominating the international fashion forecasting industry. Our mission, as an agency, is to achieve a permanent and institutional structure and become a strong research and consulting company specialized in fashion trend analytics in Turkey, with high capability to offer services to the key actors of the fashion industry. Working with a science centre brings great advantages Pointing out the advantages of working with Altınbaş University Incubation Centre, Özer said, Among the reasons why a number of companies choose to work with incubation centres is that they can have easy access to Universityoffered mentoring as well as

entrepreneurial and R&D consulting services, opportunity to meet with angel investors, and work in rent-free office spaces but most importantly strong scientific and technical infrastructure that Business Incubation Centres can provide to start-ups. We are the first and only Turkish Agency to operate in fashion forecasting Explaining the specifics of fashion forecasting, Özen added, We focus on current and upcoming fashion trends by closely monitoring the latest news and updates on fashion world as well as on society while interpreting these trends based on latest economic developments in business world in order to predict future fashion trends. Our initial goal is to reveal the impacts of customer behaviour and economic trends on creative trends and pick out the ones that may potentially become rising trends. The most important thing we cannot afford to overlook at this stage is to be able to set trends to determine customer buying trends that have the capability to set great number of people into motion. In other words, our job is to monitor current trends in women s clothing, men s clothing and accessories, and identify new trends; predict all aspects of fashion needed for fashion creation and design, including different types of fibres, fabrics, silhouettes, patterns, colours, fashion details and life styles; forecast when consumers would be ready to embrace a new trend at which market level and for what price (statistical methods and databases are used at this stage), and ensure our forecasts to help fashion companies have advantages over their competitors by receiving prior knowledge of upcoming trends. I would also like to underline the fact that we are a pioneer agency since we are the first and currently only Turkish agency to operate in fashion trend forecasting. Predicting the right trend is key Stating, Purchasing professional trend consulting services costs less than in-house training of a fashion trend analyst and can help companies make money directly, Özen also expressed that wrong trend forecasting would do more harm to companies than good, but with the right forecasting techniques and methods, we can ensure that companies are protected from any potential harm. In this context, it is of utmost importance to make accurate and spot-on trend predictions for all decision-making processes including design, manufacturing, sales and marketing. Currently pursuing her second master s degree in Fashion Design from Altınbaş University, Gonca Gül Özer aims to collaborate with AU School of Fine Arts and Design faculty but especially with AU School of Engineering and Natural Sciences for the development of a new software to predict the latest fashion trends. For example, antiseptic fabrics are used in the medical sector, in the automotive industry, in the criminal lab, and in the companies that manufacture and transport flammable and explosive materials. In our 6000 square meter facility, we are able to ship all the colors of the 38 kinds of products we offer to our customers from stock with the production capacity of metric tons per month. Which areas do you focus on in the context of technical textiles? What is the main mode of production of your company in general when we consider the military fabrics, police clothing, firefighting and other work clothes? Technical textiles have become more widespread in the clothes of private sector employees as well as public institutions. Especially those who work in dangerous jobs in the industry demand fireproof, cut-resistant, waterproof and breathable, antistatic, wear-resistant fabrics, while the medical sector demands antibacterial and antistatic and high-temperature sterile fabrics. For example, antiseptic fabrics are used in the medical sector, in the automotive industry, in the criminal lab, and in the companies that manufacture and transport flammable and explosive materials. Although technical textiles are mostly used in the field of occupational safety, they have been used in luxury and fashion in recent years. For example, our drytouch lakost fabric, which we produce, is used in both uniform and civilian lakost production with its breathable and quick drying features.

A lot of performance is expected, such as washing resistance, chemical resistance, heat, light protection, fire resistance and water resistance., Besides all these features, it should be stylish and comfortable at the same time. Considering all this, it is a process that requires constant attention and control from yarn selection to weaving, from dyeing to overhead operations. When completing all the selection process correctly, we offer to customer after the testing and certification phase. Does work clothing has anything to do with fashion or trends? What are the determining factors for the color and the design of fabrics? There is definitely a fashion and trend in work clothing. Most of the time, people do consider work clothing as something insignificant. However, employees wear their work clothes or uniforms more than their civil clothes, even if they work for very few hours a day. from going to waste and are recycled. According to the position of our staff at all levels, our annual minimum training hours are essential. We have applications to make our technical staff experienced in gaining horizons in non-have vision and mission. As a member of the BTSO assembly, I should remind all our colleagues again with the occasion of your question that BUTEKOM is an important institution to meet the needs of textile companies, which was introduced to our country by BTSO, by which it will meet Bursa s and even Turkey s economic needs whether it s related to technical textiles or basic textile. 45 Our softshell fabric is 3-fold, breathable and waterproof. From safety clothing to ski outfits, from cold storage depots to outdoor clothing, our fabrics are preferred in many areas. About technical textiles, the customer satisfaction and demands after the R & D activities we carry out, and national and international technical specifications direct our production. To give a few examples, we produced special technical fabrics for the specifications of the institutions like Turkish Armed Forces, Mobile force, Turkish Petroleum Inc, Serbia constabulary.. The work clothing has different fabric characteristics due to its echnical fabric properties. Can you give information about fabric structures and production process? First of all, workwear and technical fabrics In this way, corporate companies desire to seem elegant because they know that their employees represent the company with their outfit. In terms of trend colors, the first thing that comes to mind is nurses attire in which they often prefer plain colors as well as patterned fabrics. 48 46 INTERVIEW BİENTEKS Whether it s textile or any business, no obstacle is powerful enough to stop you if you love the work you do and the desire to develop something new is constantly jazz you up. Our country needs encouraging success stories. BİRGÜL ORAL Faunder First of all, could you briefly introduce your company to us? I met with textile thanks to an overseas customer I found on the internet.i had no experience in textile and trade. I was aiming to do something new with my idiocratical ideas. I was the eldest child in family of 5 children. As the geographical conditions of the place we lived in were not suitable, I had difficulties in getting my education. As a girl, I was walking at least 6 miles a day. We had neighbors from many different social circles, that is why, living with them and observing different lifestyles have created distinct experiences in me. In short, my life struggle began at an early age. Our start in textile sector began with fashion fabrics. Back then, I worked as an agent. When the fabrics we sent created dissatisfaction, we started to produce our own fabrics through our R & D and innovation studies, especially made by my husband. Technical Textile in protective fabrics Bientech Technic Textile Limited was born in 2004 from a small family company which was established in Bursa city (Turkey). From the beginning, its products were basically, fabrics for the fashion sector. Soon, it derived its orientation, focusing on the main line of business on the technical protective clothing world. Technical fabric production is not a standard production method. It has a complex nature inclusive of many sectors. Researches, tests, designs and so on, you have to have a structure that constantly renews itself. All our customers are overseas companies. One of the reasons why we focus on abroad, is that they

Technic textile like a puzzle. There is no only one way to go, there are so different directions needs different abilities. It starts from a needs of customer. This can be their technical requirements written on a paper we call it technical textile. After we design logicly the construction of the fabrics. Which area do you focus more on in the context of technical textiles? Where is your company graviate towards in production of work clothing when we look at military fabrics, police clothing, firefighting and other work clothes? According this needs we search or produce yarn and make the first sampling and after we develop first party. If it is correctly made we continue next step. Only machine only limited education of the current education system in the world is not allow to be technic person. 49 POLICE, INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, MILITARY, HOSPITAL & AMBULANCE Does work wear have a fashion or a trend? What are the determining factors regarding the color and design of fabrics? In technical textiles, as the new features and comfort areas that are provided by fashion develops, fabric gains superior characteristics in this direction and becomes prominent and preferable. I can say this as example; Fire Resistant fiber developed in 1960 s. Today we use this fiber so much. However basement in so old. It means that curiosity is important then availability. Today with so many technologic devices, big information, big knowledge in Turkey we don t have a production of aramide fiber. If we can t import this fiber to make yarn our fireman has no dress to go into fire. We can say that it becomes kinda trendy. Since our work is directly related to human life, the contribution to human health and life is more important than fashion. 54 FASHION DESIGNER I started my journey as soon as I graduated from school. I had a social life when I was a student. When my education was over, I was not late enough to decide to start my own workshop. 52 HATİCE GÖKÇE Fashion Designer ÇAĞLA BAYKAL / Photographer EGZON BERISHAZ / Model

Can you introduce yourself to us briefly? I started my journey as soon as I graduated from school. I had a social life when I was a student. When my education was over, I was not late enough to decide to start my own workshop. Trying to exist in the fashion industry means moving in an area which is often changing and while changing, you cannot avoid the dedifferentiation. After graduation, I established my own workshop in 1998 to work more experimentally compared to existing jobs. Since then, I ve been trying to make designs that question customary codes in men s fashion and adopt an experimental style. In addition to providing consultancy services to many brands, I present my own collections at home and abroad. I also played a pioneering role in the creation of the Argande brand within the scope of the project implemented since 2008 with the aim of strengthening the social and economic empowerment of women in the GAP region within the scope of United Nations Development Program (U NDP). 53 I am currently the design coordinator of Argande. Additionally, I am a founding member of the Association of Fashion Designers (MTD). There is an expression in your curriculum vitae, such as a designer who likes to play with innovative fabric textures in her designs. Would you like to elaborate this expression a bit more? As much as the fabric I used to make my designs, designing the surface of the fabric that will add dimension to my designs is a topic that I am interested in and professionally working on. Fiber-surface design is the main element that enriches design and makes it unique. I also make the fabric special for us in every collection by using different techniques on the surface of fabrics. Sometimes I create new surfaces by hem, sometimes by laser cuttings, and sometimes with warps and wefts. Who do you design for? What are the roots of your imagination, and your inspirers? Can you briefly tell us about it? I am building my designs on a man profile who has a high admiration, who works in creative departments, who is curious about his future, who can create trends, who can follow the fashion but is able to create his own style. In our own history, low-lying subjects where fashion is distant or detached, are the resources that feed me the most.

FASHION DESIGNER Fabrics are the main material of your profession, your art. Can you tell us about the relationship between design and fabric? What are your thoughts on Turkish fabrics? Making a design visibly presentable is only possible with the combination of fabric and pattern. Regardless of the pattern, the fabric is a material that tells the story, the feeling, the problem that the fabric design wants to tell with its fiber, color, weight, and surface. 54 Turkish fabrics surely have a great place covering 80% of our collection. This is important to us, because, having produced all our designs in Turkey to the core, is significant to us all. What kind of searches and innovations are there in fashion and design? Can we see very different and amazing works in fashion both in the upcoming season and in the long term? Producing clothes with 3D printers is the subject of the near future. I believe that the fashion world will cooperate a lot in this sense. One of the advantages is that there is no need for a factory or workshop to produce clothes. The single handicap is the energy. This technology is currently in the luxury category. This kind of technology is, of course, an alternative to the fashion world. Of course, it is a very useful technology, yet an untouched area. This area seems to be the monopoly of creative people who use technology well. Any designer who has mastered the knowledge of pattern, anatomy, and materials will never lose control over the design in every design they will produce using technology. Therefore, the bond is always very strong.

In almost every sector, there are activities related to sustainability and recycling in all areas of life. Do you have any such any works in this area in your designs? How do you place the fashion world in this respect? Considering the world resources, it is very important to adopt sustainability in all areas of fashion. This is of great importance. First of all, the product must be produced from organic raw materials and should support sustainable agriculture. Therefore, starting from the raw material we use, we must be in a sustainable position. On the other hand, it is a sustainable fashion to adopt an understanding that will enable us to return to our agenda even after the season. The fact that a real design can be worn at different times involves sustainable fashion. For this reason, the concept of sustainable fashion with long-term economic savings is based on the current commercial concerns of fashion upon on consumption. At this point, what I can call the ethereal wild face of fashion is this commercial fashion hunger and the desire of consumers to consume without limits. This is because the commercial hunger has a negative impact on the designer s creative process. It is normal for the fashion to enter into a repetitive period. The dissatisfaction of the sector and consumers creates a tense atmosphere for the designers. This reduces the value of both the designer and the his products in our eyes after a while. In 2003, I prepared a collection called Bodyforman, which consisted of bamboo fiber woven fabrics for the use of underwear and regular wear. Bodyforman is a collection I still actualize its sell. In 2012, I prepared an organic underwear collection for Doreanse. Since I founded my company, we have almost no textile waste. Since we use natural and quality fabrics in our collections, we do not throw away our pieces. Instead, if we have excessive small pieces of fabrics, we reproduce them as threads in our small weaving loom or weave them in different compositions and re-use them again in our designs. I have also been the design coordinator of Argande, a social responsibility project since While Argande products help Turkish designers to present their special designs at an affordable price, it gives women in the GAP region the opportunity to strengthen their quality of life through a sustainable project. In this sense, Argande really provides the second and third benefits that fashion has recently searched for. By buying these products, you are touching the lives and having special designs of the successful Turkish designers. At the same time, you are wearing designs that tell a story. I have works that I have been carried out in the past and still carry out. I have been working on Argande, a social responsibility project supported by the United Nations since 1998, and since then I have been the design coordinator of the project. Argande is a fashion brand that serves a social benefit. The aim of the journey was to produce new projects for the empowerment of women living in the GAP region. With Argande, we generated an urban woman profile and created a women s clothing brand. Important designers from Turkey also supports the project with their collections. Local women produce the clothes and they are put on the market in Mudo s store in Turkey in general. The income obtained is also transferred to women, and thus, it is a work that is highly valued by the United Nations in terms of being a sustainable project. Within the scope of the project, we shot in the cities of Mardin, Batman, and Şanlıurfa in the GAP region. Batman is the pilot implementation area of the project. The project draws attention as a sustainable project that spans a long period of time. As a designer, I think I should make contributions to informing people who are interested in fashion. It is only necessary to remove the fashion from a sector based on consumption. One must declare war to consumerism. We produce above surplus requirements and consume half of it. Both the consumer and the manufacturer must put a brake on this issue. We should consume less. I believe it is important to advise consumers to buy real design clothing. I recommend them to choose clothes that are made from permanent, natural materials and good workmanship. In our age the fashion has to be sustainable. The only thing that needs to be done is to get the fashion out of this vicious circle that commoditize fashion and re-define it. To ensure that designs really carry a value. 55

The stylish golf pants, golf shirts and the fashionable looks turned out to be my passion as I enjoyed the golf lifestyle more and more with her. And I decided to create a golf apparel for ladies who would wish to be more chic spending long hours in and out of the greens which I call and I have introduced to the global market as Golf&Apres Golf Chic 57

FASHION DESIGNER My tendency towards fashion goes back to my childhood years, but I started to actively participate in the sector in 1991 when I worked as a fashion editor in various magazines. 60 TUVANA BÜYÜKÇINAR Fashion Designer

When and how did your adventure in the world of fashion and design begin? My tendency towards fashion goes back to my childhood years, but I started to actively participate in the sector in 1991 when I worked as a fashion editor in various magazines. How did the trasition from fashion editing and blogging into fashion desing and owning a brand, A46 come out? Would you like to elaborate the process? I decided to progress in the field of decoration or fashion design when I was studying Industrial Design at Mimar Sinan University. I opened my first brand A46 with my husband Selim Demir as a concept boutique that imported international design brands at Nişantaşı Abdi İpekçi Street in 1999.In time, I decided to place my own designs instead of imported brands. As we started to produce with the logic of preparing collection in accordance with the world fashion calendar, we established the TUVANAM brand and then the Tutti brand which includes our daily-chic collections. How did the trasition from fashion editing and blogging into fashion desing and owning a brand, A46 come out? Would you like to elaborate the process? The target group that I enjoy to see wearing my designs is; the ones who are self-replicating type every time, pioneering with innovations, egoless, who can take good care of oneself, zippiest enough to be happy in his inner world, who can draw attention by difference. The design process starts with inspiration as everyone knows. My source of inspiration is; my business life and private life in which I am personally involved, and live in to the fullest with excitement, labor, competition. Anyone who lives in this life and shares her story becomes part of this inspiration. I know a lot of women in my environment because of the work I do. I want to carry them all to my collection when I come to the end point of the designs I created for them by listening to the story of each and every one of them. Then, a collection, bringing the season s total accumulation with handcraft quality and craftsmanship under a common theme is emerging. My collections reach our domestic and international customers in our Nişantaşı store and Paris showroom. 61

FASHION DESIGNER Do you have a particular style, color or fabric choice in your designs? What is your opinion about the Turkish fabrics? I have prepared so many different collections so far, influenced by powerful women in the history and other starting points that I can exemplify more.. For example, collections inspired from Istanbul s brutalist structure, to Ani Ruines in Kars, from hand-weaving Kutnu fabric of Gaziantep, to the glory of the 19th century, from the architecture of Art Deco, to ancient Greek etymology, to street fashion, from romanticism of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, to the giant productions like Game of Thrones and Great Gatsby. 62 Personally speaking, I m very open to change. Therefore, the fabrics and colors I prefer differ in the spirit of the collection. When it comes to Turkish fabrics, I am a designer who experienced the athmosphere of indoor bazaar and had love with hand-woven special fabrics and gravitated towards the profession. Just as I mentioned before, there is a fahion show consistsing of hand-woven kutnu fabrics belonging to Gaziantep only. In addition, many of the previously imported materials and fabrics are produced in our country today.in terms of technology and material richness, our country is one of the few countries in the textile industry in the world. Sustainability and recycling is currently on the agenda and a must for the healthy future of nature and humanity. What do you do in terms of both design and production? Many giant brands, once the pioneer of fast fashion in the past, are pioneering sustainable fashion with their collections specially prepared.

This is a fundamental fact that we should always show sensitivity. First of all, everything starts by making this consciousness our way of life. I am a person who acts with this consciousnessand produces and implements the transformation in my personal life and in my business life. I prefer natural and organic fabrics such as silk and cotton in my collections. I tried to draw attention to this issue as much as possible by taking part in many social responsibility projects such as: designing environmentalist bags for a grocery chain, or nature friendly cloth bag within the scope of Zero Waste project, transforming an old piece from the cabinet of beloved Burcu Esmersoy s into a new and different design in a special project carried out by Vogue Turkey in order to draw attention to this phenomenon. 63

FASHION DESIGNER This adventure started as gifts at the beginning surprisingly urged some other people to reach us for the notebooks we designed over the years. The product scale always evolved upon the need. The North Fox 64 YAĞMUR ÇOBAN Designer, Founder

turned out to be a brand with the meetings and contributions of talented and beautiful people.while the awareness of social media increased, we were reaching out to other people. As you know, the establishment was very coincidental for us, but when we were interested in the perception and products made for other people, we adapted this to the urban men and women, inspired by the times that people had to live only with leather as in the Middle Ages. That wasy we were aspired to build an invisible bridge between the past and the future by adapting it to today s urban men and women. Can you tell us about the establishment story of The North Fox? What was your purpose at the very beginning? 65 Everything started with my sister Ezgi s adventure of disliking the sketch books during her university years, whom we founded the brand together about nine years ago. After designing our own notebooks, we won recognition among our friends first. This adventure started as gifts at the beginning surprisingly urged some other people to reach us for the notebooks we designed over the years. The product scale always evolved upon the need. When we couldn t find a cool case that we could use for the laptop we bought, in addition to the exorbitant prices of designed products, we started to work on leather that was our area of interest. There was no brand or logo existingly, when the product range came out without noticing. We can say that our initial hobby

FASHION DESIGNER 66 We are trying to progress carefully until the preparation, presentation and transmission of the product. We deliver all of our products with the gift package as we have adapted to our own vision. What makes you different in your designs? What do you think the reason is being prefferred by so many people? In our design process, we are looking for those who cannot break away from the city, but are looking for what is in the nature, and trying to find out exactly what they need.while we rely on electronic devices such as cases, notebooks, bags, we want to infiltrate every area where skin can coalesce, and we don t shy away from it. While we are trying to offer simple, timeless, long-lasting materials, we also make customized designs. One of the reasons we are being preferred is our flexibility. In a global operating system, especially considering the problems we face in online shopping, we adopted this motto of offering satisfaction to our customers as we dream to experience in shopping. People who have problems with online shopping, the complainants about the ill-communication is very pleased from our posture. We are trying to progress carefully until the preparation, presentation and transmission of the product. We deliver all of our products with the gift package as we have adapted to our own vision. I think we are enshrined in people s heart with our flexibility in the design of products, the way we communicate, the style of our presentation, our customer satisfaction-oriented return or replacement options. The leather has its own elegance, in a distinctive world along with hand workmansip. Can we have your thoughts about this matter? Natural leather is not only strong, durable and sustainable. The leather also addresses the senses.it offers something that no other material can match, it is unique. In the hands of a skilled craftsman, It can celebrate the features that distinguish the similitude. We take the leather material and combine it with hand work. To have a long life-time in parallel with the maintenance of the leather and to be a second-hand product, provides the sustainability of the skin. Due to the fact that it is a material that age like wine, and that a product made of leather has a unique character as it is used in time, carrying the traces of life make this world unique. Could you please tell us about your products, brand and communication-marketing strategy? The outfits that we can t fit in cabinets, the shoes we bought from daily discounts every day, a lot of fabricated products that we thought were very cheap and we took them in pairs! What we buy tell us and determine our stories with us. The bond we establish with the products we bought not just to consume but because we cherish them make us who we are. As The North Fox, we are trying to uncover the unity of simplicity, to produce designs that suggest the value of time when everything is consumed at a flash of light.. We create our product range with cases to electronic devices, leather

notebooks, daily life bags and special designs. Beside that, we also offer trainings.we perform design and workshop stages together with our customers who want to accompany the production process of the product they want. As a female entrepreneur, my motto is to transform the raw material into accessories and accessories into memories that can be stored and transferred for life. Nowadays, almost every brand carries out many different activities and R & D studies on sustainability and recycling. Can we get your thoughts about this? In addition being used for several lifespan, the leather material and the design applied never lose its style.when manufactured responsibly, the natural durability of leather makes it one of the most sustainable materials we can work with. For these reasons we love leather and trust its sustainability. Leather; is a by-product of dairy, household and meat industries. Basically, it is a waste product and we think that they made it a useful and beautiful material.animals are kept as husbandry for milk and food and used for meat or for natural reasons, every piece taken from the animal is used. 67 From meat to bone, to the peltries we used to produce leathers. If you didn t use it, it would be wastefulness and disrespect to the animal. On the basis of our business, sustainability lies in short. At the same time, we contribute to recycling by transforming or repairing materials that have been processed and damaged for certain reasons.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER I continued my career as a fashion photographer by establishing my own company after gaining the ground of production, styling, art direction, creative in the creation process of a photograpgh and self-educating myself regarding the details of the process. 68 JÜLİDE GÜNGÖR Fashion Photographer

Who is the fashion photographer Jülide Güngör? Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Do you have any other interests besides fashion photography? I got admission into the Istanbul University s Business Department. However, after deciding that I wanted to be a director, I began to work as a photography assistant in the first year of my university, considering that I should have the knowledge of photography. I continued my career as a fashion photographer by establishing my own company after gaining the ground of production, styling, art direction, creative in the creation process of a photograpgh and self-educating myself regarding the details of the process. I pursue my directing job together with my photography career via clips and commercials. Frankly speaking, I am getting a lot of fun when dealing with everything that will improve me about my work such as cinema, sports, books, traveling. 69

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER Can you tell us about your art and style as a photographer? I m a man who likes to make my unique touches with a fresh point of view and excitement that will not stand against the current positions and identities of the works and people I photographed and will not alienate them at the same time. 70 What kind of place do you think the concepts like imagination and inspiration used generally in pictures and music have in photograpghy? What s excatly in your perspective that fits into the frame? The imagination and distinctive style of the artist for all the branches of art are indispensable for the inspirers. Your imagination in photography, the way you see

what you photograph, your point of view are the elements that will differentiate you as a photographer and this is extremely crucial. What are your opinions about fashion photography in Turkey? Although we have very successful works and photograph artists in Turkey, I must say that we still have a long road ahead of us to be more authentic and creative in this sense. What are your goals in fashion photography? Do you have any works to improve yourself and contribute to what you do? I would like to actualize something different, more authentic and inspiring in both areas, since I also act as a director apart from fashion photography. I am going to have different projects in 2019, which I am currently working on intensively. 71 What were the projects (and people you didn t forget) that you enjoyed the most? In all the things I will be doing, my criteria is to get excited and feel by heart. My shutter button and eyes are always in line with my heart. I m not a person who can just flick up a photo she doesn t feel. For this reason, I worked savorily in all my works and the names I worked with so far, without distinguishing any of them.

BLOGGER So I decided to take the bulls by the horns. As I ve been following what s happening in the digital world, I ve seen that I could do some things in this area. 72 KORAY CANER ÖZTÜRK Fashion Editor / Blogger

On the one hand, there is a graduate of METU Department of Industrial Engineering and a manager in a digital marketing agency, on the other hand, there is the fashion blogger, who has thousands of followers. How do you manage to do that? Can you introduce yourself a little bit? Basically, I believe these two are totally correlated. I believe that I am trying to implement the system approach as a result of my education. As soon as I graduated, I began to think about how to position my writing culture which is my special interest in the fashion world. Thanks to the conditions of the time, I opened my blog and started writing. The year 2009 was a year in which bloggers were popular all over the world. This profession was a new-comer to Turkey by that year. So I decided to take the bulls by the horns. As I ve been following what s happening in the digital world, I ve seen that I could do some things in this area. My agency life has evolved over the years thanks to my ability to link the ideas and to imagine the transition process of an idea into a practical form. From time to time, I ve had difficulties with running two jobs at the same time. There were times when I had to act like two different individuals during the day. I experienced a seesaw between two opinions such as attending an important meeting that will affect my career and traveling for a special event that will make a great contribution to my career in fashion writing. Somehow, I managed to run both at the same time by working twosome. 73 How did you start your interest in the fashion world? How do you define fashion? I can t exactly remember how my interest in the fashion world began. I describe this situation as being able to reveal an area that I have always been interested in, which I owe this to my blog I opened as soon as I graduated.

BLOGGER 74 Both in my writings and social media posts, I try to give as much space as possible to such brands and organizations dedicated themselves on this matter.. My daily stories have been replaced by the stories of fashion brands, the news on fashioners and the creative touches in the advertising campaigns. To me, I define fashion as a set of rules in which everyone can choose what suits him or her. Yes, there are rules; however, it is in our hands to comply with them or to interpret them accordingly. From an external perspective, fashion brands, advertising campaigns, digital projects seem like a world that is quite glittering and exciting. Can you describe the situation from an internal perspective? Sometimes I have to admit that I feel like a double-sided agent. Namely; while working on an agency that serves brands, and producing projects for influencer names, on the other hand, on the other hand, I take part as an influencer in the projects produced by other agencies and involved in the activities or projects of other brands. In this way, I can feed on many different areas. Such events in the colorful and exciting world go on and on, and, in time, a system or a concept accommodate in the minds of people. After a while, you don t feel any different from a teacher who enters into a class and lectures or a doctor who accepts a patient. It is exciting to be able to enter the fashion parades of the leading brands. The ones I see on the runway is hilariously colorful, as long as I show the necessary care and use the tools in written or visual form in the best possible way. In a nutshell, I can say that there is a world out there in which discipline is indispensable, requires a lot of shifts, and hard work. Who are your favorite designers and fashioners? By position, ıt can be an artist, sportsman, politician etc. Whose style do you like the most among celebrities? In some periods, I lose my excitement against the names I once eagerly looked upon their designs, in the coming periods. Among the designers, I wonder what he is doing at the moment are J. W. Anderson and Simon Porte Jacquemus. When it comes to Turkey, Gamze Saracoglu s timelessness, Zeynep Tosun s sparkle mean something special for me. Among the young generations, I should say that I am eagerly following the enthusiasm created by Şebnem Günay or Gökhan Yavaş. In the world of celebrities, the situation is a bit tragic. I am sure it is of no surprise for anyone if I exemplify names such as David Beckham or Cate Blanchett. The young actor Timotheé Chalamet, who has recently become popular, is one of the names that I keep a close rein on in the world of celebrities. If I would give it a name from Turkey, I can say that I look at Yasemin Özilhan s way of adopting and applying the world trends. What s your favorite style and concept from latest trends? What elements will come to the fore in the coming season? I think that the trend of luxury street style that has been growing rapidly for a few years has situated itself into a special place. I think there s more room for this trend to go and we will be surprised to see different applications. What are your thoughts on sustainability and recycling that are trendy in the world? The

textile industry remains at the forefront of protecting human health as well as nature and the environment. What are your views on this matter? Both in my writings and social media posts, I try to give as much space as possible to such brands and organizations dedicated themselves on this matter. The concept of sustainability, which is also part of my education, has become of vital importance in our increasingly industrialized world. Unfortunately, I don t think that many brands still show enough interest in this issue. Although it is glorifying to see the efforts of global brands, I still want to see local producers who can develop straighthead projects. Do you have any recent projects that you are planning to implement, if so, what are they? As of 2019, I achieved to convey my writings to a different group of people thanks to Robb Report Turkey. I want to continue to develop myself in this field. On top of that, I can add a desire to do a few things I dreamed of in the agency world. 75
