2 CREATIVITY + OMMUNICATION FRIDAY NOV 7 DX Intersection (DXI) 2014 takes its cue from our fall exhibition Politics of Fashion I Fashion of Politics. Exploring design and creativity as communication vehicles, DXI offers an immersive experience created by the city s celebrated and emerging designers and artists. Each year, DX celebrates one Canadian who exemplifies creativity, outstanding talent and innovative vision. Previous awardees include Bruce Mau, Joe Mimran + Kimberley Newport Mimran, Byron + Dexter Peart, Karim + Hani Rashid and Douglas Coupland. We are thrilled to announce FRANK TOSKAN, co-founder of MAC Cosmetics, as the DXI 2014 Awardee. On November 7, dance, eat, drink and celebrate with friends and colleagues within a mash-up of design disciplines and creative cultures, realized through interactive installations and unexpected interventions. 3 DESIGN EXCHANGE, CANADA S DESIGN MUSEUM Established in 1994, Design Exchange (DX) is Canada s only museum dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage. At a crossroads of multiple disciplines, from furniture and architecture to graphics and fashion, DX exhibitions and talks are curated to reflect the popular zeitgeist and contemporary culture, while demonstrating the relevance and importance of design to everyday life. Under the leadership of President Shauna Levy, and a renewed strategic vision beginning March 2012, DX has hosted renowned traveling exhibitions from prestigious cultural institutions across the globe, including Stefan Sagmeister s The Happy Show and Design Museum London s Christian Louboutin retrospective, alongside its own This Is Not A Toy, guest curated by Pharrell Williams. Educating and awareness-building from its downtown Toronto location in the historic Toronto Stock Exchange building, the not-for-profit charity attracts thousands of visitors of all ages each year. DX IN THE MEDIA What better setting for Canada s chief design museum than an architectural gem? The former Toronto Stock Exchange houses Design Exchange, or DX, in Art Deco splendour. New president Shauna Levy is expanding the non-profit s offerings, snagging travelling exhibitions from worthy venues such as Philadelphia s ICA, source of The Happy Show, graphic design Stefan Sagmeister s revealing look at the pursuit of joy and contentment. Four Seasons Magazine Check out Bravos: Groundbreaking Spanish Design, a two-week exhibition kicking off at Design Exchange in Toronto. Like a dish of paella, the exhibit combines a distinct set of ingredients to make a cohesive whole. And it looks delicious. Madeleine White, The Globe and Mail When I heard singer Pharrell Williams would curate a museum show on designer toys, I figured Brooklyn, Tokyo or London would host it. But of all places, it turns out Toronto is the only city to get lucky and see This Is Not A Toy. Michael Kaminer, New York Daily News Striking an attitude in line with the DX museum s newly-revised mandate, This Is Not a Toy achieves its environment s potential. The museum recently shifted its programming from moribund to provocative. Sky Goodden, BlouinArtInfo [This Is Not A Toy] also represents a pivotal moment for the Design Exchange, and for Levy. When she was appointed DX president in March 2012, she was given the mandate to broaden the institution s appeal from esoteric to populist. This Is Not A Toy does exactly that. 4 FRANK TOSKAN Frank Toskan co-founded MAC Cosmetics more than thirty years ago in Toronto and transformed the cosmetics industry with his bold and magnificent taste. In 2012, Toskan was honoured by the International AIDS Conference for fundraising $250 million for numerous HIV/AIDS causes through the MAC AIDS Fund, a campaign established in In 1982, first space MAC Pro Store opened at the corner of Carlton and Parliament streets in Toronto. Servicing professionals only, the shop educated artists about makeup application and offered a library, where artists could leave and filter through portfolios and talk to colleagues about products and ideas. MAC opened its first retail shop at Christopher and Gay streets in New York, embracing the very gay area and employing drag queens as security. Toskan was the driving force behind the opening of some 300 stores worldwide in just 15 years. The outstanding brushes, vivacious lipsticks and flawless powders he created have been used by makeup artist Debi Mazar and others at the cutting-edge of fashion, hair and makeup on top talents such as Linda Evangelista, Madonna and Michael Jackson.
