Devinez! In the next 6 slides you will read a short text describing an invention or an innovation. Try to guess what is being described each time.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. This object was discovered a very long time ago, nobody knows quite when. It changed the course of evolution and of history as it enabled man to move heavy objects much more easily and much more rapidly. The great pyramids of Egypt would not have been possible without it. It is: The wheel.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. This technique, or skill, was developed in Mesopotamia about five thousand years ago. It was a very important innovation as it allowed people to communicate across large areas and to record important events and instructions. It is: Writing.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. This invention in the 1500 s changed the course of European history as it enabled people to have access to knowledge and information which, before then, had remained in the hands of a small elite. Some historians say it was a root cause of the reformation (the rise of Protestantism separating from Roman Catholicism). The machine was invented in Germany by a man called Guthenberg. It is: The printing press.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. This invention from the early 19 th century was extremely important as it allowed people to travel great distances overland at relatively high speed. Before then, people depended exclusively on their own two feet or on horses. Some people were afraid to travel in this new invention because they believed they would suffocate travelling at such high velocity, so Queen Victoria travelled in one to show the public they had nothing to fear. It is: The steam engine train.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. The arrival of the consumer society in the 1950s made many appliances widely available to American and European housewives (vacuum cleaners, toasters, fridges etc.). But one in particular changed women s lives dramatically, freeing them from their single biggest weekly chore. It allowed women to have more free time for other activities and even to consider the crazy idea of getting a job themselves instead of depending solely on their husbands. It is: The washing machine.
Exercise 8 modified, page 67. Read the following descriptions of inventions and see if you can understand what is being described. Although this innovation was developed as early as the 1960s, it only became available to the general public from the mid 1990s. It has had, and is still having, a huge impact on the way we live our lives in many different domains. It has changed our relationship with information and knowledge. It has completely changed the way we communicate with each other. It has also had a huge impact on entertainment and shopping. It is an innovation with keeps reinventing itself and every year the possibilities become more and more exciting, but also more and more worrying. It is: The internet.

Did you know that in the affirmative must and have to have the same meaning but in the negative they are totally different. Click to the next slide to see some examples of this:
First let s look at Must & Have to in the affirmative; both indicate obligation We have to change the shape of our model. We must change the shape of our model. I have to meet John tomorrow. I must meet John tomorrow. The company has to lay off some staff. The company must lay off some staff.
There can sometimes be a nuance between must and have to in the affirmative. We often use have to to indicate that the obligation is imposed from an external source, whereas we often use must to indicate that it ia selfimposed obligation. Click forward to see some examples of this nuance.
Nuance between must and have to in the affirmative. A schoolboy says: I have to learn English but I hate it. A businessman wishing to improve his career prospects says: I must learn English, it s so important these days. Manager: We must change the shape of our model, the current one is not popular with the customers. Manager: We have to change the shape of our model, the current one no longer conforms with government regulations.
Now let s move on to the negative forms of must (Mustn t) and have to (Don t have to). Mustn t: expresses prohibition. Don t have to: expresses absence of obligation. Subtle? No! this distinction is very important, click forward to see why.
In a restaurant in Paris a tourist takes out a cigarette and starts smoking it. The French waiter comes running up shouting: Please sir, you don t have to smoke here. The tourist looks at the waiter, smiles and continues to smoke Why does the tourist continue to smoke? Click forward for the answer.
The tourist continues to smoke because the waiter has just told him that he is not obliged to smoke. You don t have to smoke here, means: Vous n êtes pas obligé de fumer ici. What should the waiter have said to the tourist? You mustn t smoke here.
Choose the most appropriate verb for each of the following: You mustn t/don t have to carry a lot of cash on you in case you get robbed. You mustn t carry a lot of cash on you in case you get robbed. il ne faut pas; vous ne devez pas In France young men mustn t/don t have to do military service. In France young men don t have to do military service. ils ne sont pas obligés You mustn t/dont have to collect me at the airport, I ve booked a taxi. You dont have to collect me at the airport, I ve booked a taxi. ce n est pas nécessaire You mustn t/dont have to exceed the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
