He studied ceramic painting in Paris before working as an apprentice painting figures at the Sevres factory. Following the Siege of Paris, he fled to England and subsequently began working at the Minton factory in He became freelance in the 1890's following a fallout with Leon Arnoux, and whilst still continuing to paint for Minton, also painted for other Staffordshire factories including Coalport.
