I am delighted to introduce myself as the new editor in chief of the magazine and look forward to producing many issues for you to enjoy. We are well into 2016 and have a series of exciting new releases to share with you. In this issue of Collectors you will find a special treat if you are one of our royal fans! We are celebrating the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II and a special collection has been created to commemorate this wonderful occasion. I thought it was only fitting that we should first learn all about the Queen and the significance of her 90th Birthday. We then continue on a personal journey with the longest reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, delving further into significant moments in her life. From her role in war time London to the christening of a future king, Val Baynton explores the making of a modern day Queen. From celebrating the Queen we move into our 2016 Pretty Ladies available in a rainbow of colours. Discover the inspiration, styles and fashions of these Pretty Ladies on page 13. Sentiment, a refined or tender emotion, is explored in our new Sentiments collection. This collection features six figurines, each having a name that is symbolic to a particular thought such as Love and Laughter. For all who particularly love collecting occasion figurines this collection is the perfect addition. Finally, we take a look back at Royal Doulton s past to learn more about the renowned Royal Doulton designer Neil Faulkner. 3 To honour the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen, Neil Faulkner has designed a limited edition collection of four figurines inspired by significant events in her life. Commemorative ceramics marking notable Royal achievements and events have been a tradition at Royal Doulton since the end of the 19th century. Births, marriages, accessions and abdications, as well as deaths, have all been marked. The four figurines depict her as young princess in the her uniform of the Auxiliary Territorial Army, relaxing at home with her beloved Corgis, on her 80th Birthday and at the Christening of Prince George (see following pages). Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York and was born on 21st April 1926, but because she was not expected to become Queen her birth was not marked with commemorative ceramics. When she was 10 years old her life suddenly changed her grandfather King George V died, her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated after only a short time as monarch, meaning that on 10 December 1936 she became heir to the throne. From that moment on she has been determined to fulfil her duty and for the last 63 years as Queen, Head of State, Head of the Commonwealth and now the UK s longest serving monarch she has done just that. Despite her long reign, The Queen is not the longest reigning living monarch. This accolade goes to Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand s king he came to the throne in 1946, and so this year he celebrates an amazing 70 years as monarch. A Nation Celebrates On April 21st, her birthday, The Queen was at Windsor Castle, and public engagements including walkabouts were held. The Queen s 90th Birthday Celebration event told the story of her life and her six-decade reign from 12th to 15th May, in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The spectacular programme was hosted by the Royal Windsor Horse Show and each evening included music, song, dance and equestrian displays. Participants came from around the world with the South Australian Police Band, the New Zealand Army Band and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police taking part. A member of the Queen s family attended each evening, and The Queen herself watched the performances on the last night. In addition, The Queen s 90th year will be marked by documentaries on television and interviews with senior members of her family. There is also a new drama, The Crown, which will be available via the on-demand service Netflix. The drama will look at the inside story of the Queen, her Prime Ministers and events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

4 ARMY DAY By Val Baynton Her Majesty Army Days portrays Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor dressed in the uniform of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), which she joined in 1945 as a Second Subaltern. By the end of the war she was a Junior Commander, having completed her course at the No. 1 Mechanical Training Centre of the ATS and passed out as a fully qualified driver. Amongst the duties she carried out were changing wheels, maintaining engines and driving vehicles such as ambulances. Princess Elizabeth was not given any privileges during her training, she was treated in exactly the same way as her fellow junior officers. According to her fellow and senior officers she was determined and conscientious in her work, and not without a sense of fun! All qualities for which she has been admired and respected for, ever since. The figurine Army Days is full of detail, including the ATS badge on Princess Elizabeth s hat and the overalls and flat shoes that were regulation wear, as well as the dark green tool box by her feet. Skilled ceramic artists have painted the figurine by hand in shades of brown and green to recreate the khaki tones of the World War Two uniform. Conscription for women began in 1941, and the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), formed in 1938, was one of the services women could join, alongside the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) or they could opt for a job in industry. Alternatives were the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS), which supplemented the emergency services at home, or the Women's Land Army, where women worked on farms. In the ATS roles initially ranged from cooks and clerks to drivers but expanded to include serving in anti-aircraft batteries, thus enabling more men to be released for front line service. More than 250,000 women served in the ATS during the Second World War and it was the largest of the women's services. Although Princess Elizabeth is correctly and smartly attired in this figurine, apparently this was not the case on the day peace was declared - 8th May Elizabeth, wearing her uniform, and her sister Margaret joined their parents on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. As the celebrations continued the young girls asked to go out onto the streets of London to witness and take part in the celebrations at first hand. They were allowed to go as part of a large party and they were chaperoned, but to avoid being recognised Princess Elizabeth pulled her ATS officer s cap down over eyes, until one of the accompanying officers reminded her to wear the cap correctly. The Queen remembered the excitement of the night in a radio interview she gave in 1985 to mark the 40th anniversary of VE Day, and she also recalled that it was a very memorable night.

6 At Home Her Majesty By Val Baynton At Home portrays Queen Elizabeth II relaxing with two of her favourite dogs at Windsor Castle, the 900 year old castle and royal residence that she regards very much as her home. The figurine is inspired by an informal photograph taken in 1962 when the Queen was celebrating ten years of being a monarch, but she was also a mother of three - her fourth child Prince Edward, now the Earl of Wessex was not born until Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret were evacuated to Windsor Castle at the start of the Second World War and she has since regarded it as her private home, spending most weekends there as well as a month over Easter and a week during June. However, Windsor, the largest occupied castle in the world, is also a working palace and its here that the Queen regularly hosts State Banquets and receives visiting Heads of States and monarchs. At Home HN 5807 Height 16cm AU$ NZ$ Limited Edition 2,000 Windsor Castle is open to the public too, and there is a certain excitment of being able to see the State rooms and other parts of the Castle such as St George s Chapel, that The Queen regularly visits. Each year exhibitions highlight aspects of royal life providing an insight into historic traditions as well as the family today. This year a new exhibition, Fashioning a Reign, runs across three of The Queen s official residences Windsor Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, and Buckingham Palace. The exhibition will chart significant events in The Queen s life and the nation s history through the display of dress and accessories designed for these occasions. The dates run from 21st April to 16th October in Edinburgh, from 23rd July to 2nd October at Buckingham Palace and from 17th September until 8th January 2017 at Windsor Castle. Over 150 outfits from the Queen s Wardrobe will be on display and at each location the outfits will be selected to link with the location. During the Queen s 90th year many events will be hosted at Windsor Castle including a walkabout in the town in April for her actual birthday and the 90th Birthday Celebration event, which was held in May, see page 10.

7 In this informal study, Queen Elizabeth sits on a carved stone seat playing with two of her Corgis - she is reaching down to stroke one of her dogs whilst the other looks adoringly up to her mistress s face. The Queen s first Corgi, Susan, was given to her as an 18th birthday present in 1944, by her father, and all her subsequent corgis are Susan s descendants. They travel with the Queen to her different residences and she likes to be involved in their care as much as possible. In addition, some Corgis have been cross bred with Dachshunds creating Dorgis. Her Majesty s extensive jewellery collection comprises of many beautiful pieces that she has been given during her reign as well as priceless heirlooms inherited from her ancestors. For each outfit and occasion she attends, her jewellery is carefully selected but the Queen has many favourite pieces, and two have been chosen for this figurine. The Pearl Trefoil brooch on her jacket lapel features five pearls surrounded by diamonds, and this elegant jewel has been worn during her annual Christmas Broadcasts and selected for Royal Ascot as well as on many other public events. Her earrings, known as the Ladies of Devonshire Earrings, combine a pearl suspended from a diamond and were originally presented to Princess May of Teck as a wedding present in Queen Mary, as she became in 1910, gave them to her granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth, as a wedding gift in Royal Doulton Commemoratives linked to Queen Elizabeth II The first Royal commemorative produced at Royal Doulton s Stoke on Trent factory came about because of a friendship between the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and Sir Henry Doulton. In 1887 the Prince arranged for a party to be held for children in Hyde Park to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the coronation of his mother Queen Victoria. The Prince wanted to give each child a gift and he presented Henry Doulton with a sketch of a beaker he had in mind. Once the shape was modelled and decoration was designed by art director, John Slater, the project went ahead. Around 100,000 such beakers were issued Mug and a beaker depicted Princess Elizabeth when she became heir to the throne Monaveen, a sculpture of the horse, which belonged to the Princess, was made and presented to her on a visit to the Royal Doulton factory in that year. 9 yal CHRISTENING By Val Baynton with ruby, sapphire and emerald flowers and she regularly wears it on formal, as well as important family occasions. The three month old prince, third in line to the throne, is held by his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, whilst his father, the Duke of Cambridge, proudly stands behind them. Prince George s flowing christening gown is a replica of the lace and silk-satin robe made for Queen Victoria s eldest daughter, Victoria, The Princess Royal, in The original gown with its cap sleeves and a Honiton cotton lace overlay was designed to resemble Queen Victoria s wedding dress, made for her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, and has been worn by royal babies ever since. Now fragile, a replacement has been made by the Queen s dressmaker, Angela Kelly. The details of the gown s intricate embroidery and frills around the sleeves and neckline have been carefully recreated on this spectacular figurine. Neil Faulkner s study has captured the sense of love and pride at seeing the life of the next generation unfold as great-grandmother, parents and new-born pose for a family photograph. This figurine celebrates family and age-old traditions being passed down through the generations. The Queen s sky blue cashmere coat is decorated with one of the Queen s favourite pieces of jewellery the sparkling Flower Basket brooch was given to her by her parents to celebrate the birth of Prince Charles. 10 Birthday Her Majesty Celebration By Val Baynton Birthday Celebration portrays Queen Elizabeth II on her 80th Birthday on 21st April HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY One of the remarkable qualities of the Queen is her boundless energy, and her 80th birthday was not a day for her to relax! During the day she and Prince Phillip enjoyed a 45-minute walk around Windsor Castle greeting well-wishers and accepting gifts, cards and flowers, she even made the first cut in a giant birthday cake! Later that day she also attended a private dinner with her family at Kew Palace, in the heart of Kew Gardens where she was feted with a firework display and a delicious meal. That day she received not just one or a 100 birthday messages from members of the public but an amazing 40,000! For her walk-about The Queen was dressed in vibrant pink, one of the strong colours she favours so that she can be easily spotted by the public. It is this outfit that Neil Faulkner and the design team chose for the study marking her 80th birthday. All the details of her outfit have been meticulously interpreted including her matching hat with feathers to the hat-band, she carries one of her iconic black handbags, a bouquet of roses finished with handmade flowers, and a birthday card in her right hand. Birthday Celebration HN 5808 Height 22cm AU$ NZ$ Limited Edition 2,000 The Queen s jewellery is always carefully chosen to accessories her outfits, and on her 80th birthday she wore a pearl necklace and the City of London Lily Brooch, combining lily and grasses, which was presented to her when she was given the Freedom of the City in The Queen has numerous pearl necklaces and often wears them in combination to create two or even three strands. The most famous of her two strand necklaces is made up of the Queen Anne and the Queen Caroline necklaces. Containing 46 pearls, the smaller necklace is said to have belonged to Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch who reigned from 1702 to 1714, whilst the larger is made up of 50 pearls, and which once belonged to Caroline, the wife of King George II. They were left to the Crown by Queen Victoria and were subsequently given to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift in 1947 by her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she wore them on her wedding day.

11 THE QUEEN S OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY Royal Doulton would like to wish both Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who will be 95 in June, very happy birthdays. The Queen actually celebrates her birthday twice every year once in April on the date she was born and secondly in June on her official birthday which is celebrated by the parade, Trooping the Colour. Originally this military parade had the important and practical purpose of showing or trooping the colours or flags of a battalion to the ranks of soldiers to ensure that they would recognise them in battle, and from 1748 the parade also took place to honour the monarch s official birthday. By the early 19th century the Birthday Parade became more elaborate and colourful but it was King Edward VII who was the first monarch to regularly take the salute and to acknowledge the loyalty of the troops in person. The Queen first took the salute in 1951, when she was still a princess, because her father was unwell. Until 1986, the Queen appeared on horseback but when her horse Burmese retired, she decided not to train another horse and she now rides in the ivory coloured phaeton, which was made for Queen Victoria in For this reason she no longer wears a uniform at the ceremony, but she may wear a brooch related to the Foot Guard Regiment one of five she is Colonel in Chief for and that is Trooping the Colour that year. The 21st century ceremony is full of colour and pageantry, and this year it takes place on Saturday 11th June. Over 1,400 officers, 200 horses and 400 musicians from 10 bands are involved in the ceremony and the parade starts at Buckingham Palace, proceeds along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again. Did you know? The first royal walkabout took place during The Queen s visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1970, as a way of allowing her to meet a greater number of people. For many years the Trooping the Colour ceremony has been held in May or June and not on the date of the monarch s actual birthday because the weather is usually better for an outside event.

18 Who's Who Neil F OF ROYAL DOULTON For over a century, the most exceptional designers and artists have created studies for the Royal Doulton figurine collection, and this tradition is ably continued by Neil Faulkner. With a 40-year history of working for Royal Doulton, Neil has a close appreciation of the company s heritage and its emphasis on high quality, unique design. He is an extremely versatile designer and brings his outstanding talent to interpreting a range of themes and products. Neil has designed collectors plates including Valentine and Victorian Christmas Series, Snowman and Brambly Hedge nurseryware, and he has also created designs for commemoratives marking the Silver and Golden Jubilees of HM The Queen, the marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer, royal births and giftware for the 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays of HRH Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Over the last decade, Neil has focussed on designing for the Royal Doulton figurine collection, including annual figurines such as Happy Birthday, Figurine of the Year and the iconic Michael Doulton studies. With over 100 figurines to his name he has also designed figurines for the Dancers of the World, Songs of Christmas, the Crystal Ball, Christmas and the Rhythm and Dance collections as well as limited editions including Mr Doulton, Lady Doulton and the new collection celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II (see page 4). Neil works closely with the UK based design department and in particular with Caroline Woolmer. For each figurine Neil receives a concept board from Caroline, indicating colours and textures for the forthcoming model, styling such as the cut and fullness of the gown, choice of neckline and sleeves, hairstyle, jewellery or other accessories. With the brief in mind Neil sets to work, he researches the latest cat-walk shows from design houses such as Chanel; he looks at what celebrities are wearing for gala appearances and film premieres as well as at the latest fashions for brides. From all this resource he forms in his mind a sense of the personality for the new figurine and he skilfully combines the qualities Caroline has highlighted with a graceful sense of movement and an emotion or mood and creates a pencil sketch to illustrate his ideas for the new study. Once this is approved by Caroline, Neil paints an exquisite watercolour of the new design. Neil s studies always capture gentle and feminine qualities but they can also reflect many different characters they can be demure, romantic or pensive, they may be vivacious, confident or playful, or reflect a historical style. And it s his background in fine art that has led to his sensitive understanding of the way women stand and move, and which comes to the fore as he completes each design. Through small tweaks in the angle and placing of arms and hands, the arch of a neck or head position he gives every figurine a distinctive identity and mood. For example, Christine, which was launched in 2013, has a bold confident pose with her arms bent and hands to her waist. Her spirited persona matches her chic oneshouldered ball gown with a low sweeping neckline.

19 aulkner BY VAL BAYNTON The contemporary styled dress is complemented by the innovative decorative effects created by the Royal Doulton artistic team contrasting grey shades give a satin like sheen and a painting technique, inspired by the pointillism method, adds a shimmering effect to Christine s bodice and matching brooch, purse and tiara. In contrast, a figurine such as Charlotte Figure of the Year 2016 reflects a demure and romantic mood. Neil has taken a more traditional approach to Charlotte s costume, and her full skirt sweeps over layers of petticoats whilst a modern touch is added with the light shrug style jacket, which modestly covers her bare shoulders. Charlotte demurely holds her dress with a dainty outstretched hand, and in her other she holds a lacy parasol - a costume accessory that links back to many popular figurines of yesteryear. The annual Mother's Figure, which features a precious moment shared by a mother and her daughter, is one that Neil very much enjoys creating. These particular studies express love and closeness and Neil masterfully captures the strong emotional bond between the two generations as well as gentle and affectionate expressions in their faces. Neil s empathy and ability to convey inspiring and thoughtful sentiments is one of his unique skills as an artist. Neil s designs are a perfect combination of three elements graceful movement, beautiful costumes and character ensuring every Royal Doulton figurine is both elegant and unique. NEIL S CAREER IN BRIEF Born in 1952, in Newcastle under Lyme, Neil studied art and design locally at Burslem School of Art and Stoke Polytechnic, before joining Royal Doulton as packaging designer in Soon he started to design ceramics his young family inspired scenes on Silent Night and Bedtime Story collectors plates. His work has included royal commemoratives, Brambly Hedge and Snowman nurseryware. From 2006 Neil has worked as a freelance designer for Royal Doulton, allowing him time to develop his own art. His style is colourful, spontaneous and painterly, and he works with both watercolour and oil. Subjects include fruit, flowers and nature, still life compositions inspired by everyday objects such as flowerpots as well as landscapes depicting local Staffordshire scenes, seascapes in Italy, Spain and France and figurative studies.
