But an increasing number are also likely to become obese, diabetic and even depressed as adults. The culprit? Computer devices that keep young brains busy with digital output, while their bodies remain inactive. Cutting back on screen time Spending up to 5 to 7 hours in front of a computer screen is a common and potentially unhealthy fact of life for many children. Here s why: Studies show that prolonged sitting can trigger all sorts of metabolic changes in the body, influencing things such as blood sugar, cholesterol and the hormones that trigger overeating. Moreover, that weekend soccer game won t compensate for all those sedentary hours spent playing video games or surfing the Internet. Ideally, children should get at least 60 minutes of vigorous, age-appropriate physical activity every day, preferably outdoors. Getting Enough Sleep Another reason to establish digital-free downtime is more sleep. Not getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on young children, affecting their moods, behaviour, and ability to concentrate. Because more growth hormones are released during sleep than at any other time, a child s physical development may also be affected.
