2 Feel Better Nose Woes Your nose is the filtration system of your upper respiratory tract, trapping bacteria and allergens before they get into your airways. One of its major players is something we don t really like to think about mucus. Mucus s main purpose is to keep your nasal lining moist. The drier the lining, the more prone you are to infection. When your nasal passages get inflamed or swollen, they can cause sniffles, stuffiness, or permanently plugged sinuses. But treating it the wrong way can make your condition worse. Knowing the cause of your problem is the first step toward relief. Is it allergies or a cold? Generally a runny nose will go away when your cold does, which is about a week or so. But with allergies, the stuffed up feeling will remain as long as the allergen does. So you may have to do an inventory of things in your home such as carpets or pets to determine what s causing it. An allergist can help you identify the offending allergens. Congestion The Comeback Condition? Most of us don t think twice about reaching for a nasal spray when suffering from a chronic nasal condition. But overusing them can actually make your congestion worse. When used ly, they cause something called a rebound effect, which means the congestion will come back often worse than when it started out. As well, decongestant nasal sprays can raise your blood pressure and give you the jitters. Bottom line? Use nasal sprays sparingly for only occasional, temporary relief. Here are a couple more ways to unplug the mucus and keep it flowing. Don t blow your nose too hard. This can cause the thin, delicate tissue in your nose to tear, and result in nosebleeds. To keep passages moist, apply a light coating of petroleum jelly to the nasal membranes. Get steamed. Inhaling steam is a popular home remedy to relieve nasal congestion, and lubricate an irritated respiratory tract. Sit comfortably and lean over a bowl of steaming hot water while covering your head and the bowl with a cloth so that the steam doesn t escape. Inhale continuously for 10 minutes. Adding a mentholated product such as eucalyptus oil can increase the effects. Just be sure to keep your head about an arm s length from the bowl from which you are inhaling the steam.
