2 With about 200 cold viruses fl oating around out there, it s no surprise that many of us spend colder months coughing, sniffl ing and trying to soothe our sore throats. Contrary to popular belief, it s not cold air that causes a cold. People generally spend more time indoors, in close proximity with others who are spreading the germs around. Usually a cold will last about a week. Here s how to stop some of the cold symptoms: Zinc Power Ending Cold Spells Although many natural remedies claim to have cold-fi ghting abilities, zinc is about the only thing proven to reduce the duration of a cold. When you feel a cold coming on the start of a tickly throat, let s say start sucking on zinc lozenges, specifically the ones where zinc has been combined with acetate. Since zinc works by killing cold germs on contact, you shouldn t chew or swallow the lozenges. Instead, let them slowly dissolve in your mouth so they can be thoroughly absorbed by the blood vessels in your oral cavity. It s also a good idea to swish and gargle some of the dissolved zinc to let it come into contact with as many oral and throat surfaces as possible. Aim for about 75 milligrams a day that s roughly one lozenge every few hours.
