MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL "It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students. The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students. I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination. Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path. My best wishes to all. Dr. A. Sengupta 2

EDITORIAL BOARD CHIEF EDITOR EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Wheat Whisperer, circa 1953 As an Iowa farm boy who lived through the Great Depression, Norman Borlaug viscerally understood the toll of poverty and hunger. It fueled his determination to feed a global population that was increasing exponentially and his tenacious belief that the way to do so was by boosting crop yields. Trained as a plant pathologist, Borlaug joined the Rockefeller Institute funded Cooperative Wheat Research and Production Program in Mexico (a precursor to CIMMYT, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center) in 1944 to develop varieties resistant to a fungal pathogen called wheat rust. (See Putting Up Resistance, page 34.) He succeeded, but the tall varieties he worked with tended to fall over, or lodge, in the wind or rain when the seed heads grew large. In 1953, Borlaug obtained a Japanese variety of semidwarf wheat called Norin 10, which was two feet shorter. He first bred Norin 10 with local rust resistant Mexican strains, and eventually crossed the hybrids with wheat varieties from other countries. This painstaking work continued for years, but yielded wheat with plump heads and sturdy stems that avoided lodging. To speed up field testing, Borlaug grew two crop rotations per year, shuttling seeds between his summer fields at the higher elevations of central Mexico and his winter fields near the coast of Sonora, to the north. This incidentally bred photoperiod-insensitive strains that could be grown at nearly any latitude. Altogether, his efforts vastly improved the productivity of farms around the world, especially in poor and hungry countries. His wheat improvements are credited with saving a billion people from starvation. There are no miracles in agricultural production, Borlaug said in his 1970 Nobel Peace Prize lecture. The Green Revolution in India and Pakistan... is based on sound research, the importance of which is not self-evident at first glance. For, behind the 5
scenes, halfway around the world in Mexico, were two decades of aggressive research on wheat. Jesse Dubin, who worked with Borlaug at CIMMYT for more than 25 years, says Borlaug insisted that field work was the best way to understand a plant. Borlaug used to say, If you don t go out in the field and talk to the plants, the plants won t talk to you, Dubin recalls. Although Borlaug was admired by agronomists, and even his close colleagues were awed by what he had achieved, detractors say that Borlaug contributed to a loss of traditional farming and the spread of monoculture, herbicides, soil erosion, and an unsustainable dependency on industrial farming practices. On what would have been Borlaug s 100th birthday earlier this year, legislators unveiled a statue of him in the US Capitol. But Julie Borlaug says her grandfather was less interested in celebrating his past achievements and more concerned about solving the next generation of agricultural challenges. After thanking the crowd, he would have turned to everyone in the audience, with his finger pointing, and he would have given them marching orders, she says. First and foremost would have been, Less talk, more action. Source: NEWS UPDATE Scientists engineer shortcut for photosynthetic glitch, boost crop growth 40%: (3 rd January, 2019) Most crops on the planet are plagued by a photosynthetic glitch, and to deal with it, evolved an energy-expensive process called photorespiration that drastically suppresses their yield potential. Researchers reportthat crops engineered with a photorespiratory shortcut are 40 percent more productive in real-world agronomic conditions. NASA's New Horizons mission reveals entirely new kind of world:(2rd January, 2019) Scientists from NASA's New Horizons mission released the first detailed images of the most distant object ever explored -- the Kuiper Belt object nicknamed Ultima Thule. Its remarkable appearance, unlike anything we've seen before, illuminates the processes that built the planets four and a half billion years ago. 6
Our universe: An expanding bubble in an extra dimension:(28 th December, 2018) Researchers have devised a new model for the universe -- one that may solve the enigma of dark energy. Their new article proposes a new structural concept, including dark energy, for a universe that rides on an expanding bubble in an additional dimension.. Engineers create an inhalable form of messenger RNA:(4 th January, 2019) In an advance that could lead to new treatments for lung disease, researchers have now designed an inhalable form of mrna. This aerosol could be administered directly to the lungs to help treat diseases such as cystic fibrosis, the researchers say. DNA design that anyone can do:(3 rd January, 2019) Researchers have designed a computer program that allows users to translate any free-form drawing into a two-dimensional, nanoscale structure made of DNA. Surprise discovery reveals second visual system in mouse cerebral cortex:(3 rd January, 2019) The visual system is probably the best understood part of the brain. Over the past 75 years, neuroscientists have assembled a detailed account of how light waves entering your eyes allow you to recognize your grandmother's face, to track a hawk in flight, or to read this sentence. But a new study is calling a fundamental aspect of vision science into question, showing that even the best-studied parts of the brain can still hold plenty of surprises. Wireless 'pacemaker for the brain' could offer new treatment for neurological disorders:(3 rd January, 2019) A new neurostimulator can listen to and stimulate electric current in the brain at the same time, potentially delivering fine-tuned treatments to patients with diseases like epilepsy and Parkinson's. 7
Next up: Ultracold simulators of super-dense stars:(3 rd January, 2019) Physicists have created the world's first laser-cooled neutral plasma. The research opens a frontier where experimental atomic and plasma physicists can coax matter to behave in bizarre new ways. Self-powered microfluidic sheet that wraps, flaps and creeps:(2 nd January, 2019) Researchers for the first time apply catalytic chemical reactions to 2D sheets to generate flows that transform these sheets into mobile, 3D objects. For detail mail to editor KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE WEREWOLF SYNDROME- An Orphan Genetic Disorder Hypertrichosis is broadly classified into two types as congenital and acquired hypertrichosis is further divided into subtypes based on the location of excessive hair growth. CONGENITAL HYPERTRICHOSIS LANUGINOSE: It is not found very often. Since the middle ages, only about fifty cases have been reported. In this case children right after birth have excessive hair growth and most of the body is covered with lanugo hair. Lanugo hair is fine, unpigmented, soft, silky hair that covers the foetus but is later shed after the eight month of pregnancyand is then replaced with vellus hair and terminal scalp hair just before birth. In this case lanugo hair will continue to grow. 8
CONGENITAL HYPERTRICHOSIS TERMINALIS: It shows hair growth all over the body but the hair is thick pigmented terminal hair. It is associated with gingival hyperplasia. NAEVOID HYPERTRICOSIS: It is exceptional form where only a patch of terminal hair growth occurs. The patch is usually at the bottom of the person s back. It can be occur at birth or occur later in life. It can also be found in the form of one large, bushy eyebrow. ACQUIRED HYPERTRICHOSIS: It develops later in life and related to drug ingestion. It is typically growth of unpigmented vellous or pigmented terminal hair. Sometimes hair is centered in a certain area or is covers most areas of the body like forehead, temples, trunk, and extremities. The overall cause of hypertrichosis for the most part is unknown. Scientist believe that congenital generalised hypertrichosis is a genetic disorder that occurs due tospontaneous mutation in a DNA sequence of Xq24-q27.1 regions of the X chromosome. Werewolf syndrome or hypertrichosis is also caused by Conversion of vellus hair to terminal hair in areas which usually do not have terminal hair If duration of growing phase, angen of hair cycle is increased, as a result hair shedding is decreased If hair density is increased Acquired hypertrichosis can be caused by taking certain drugs. The drugs that cause hypertrichosis are phenytoin, cyclosporine, minoxidil. Phenytoin can cause hypertrichosis as little as three months and often coincides with acne. In 60% of patients developed hypertrichosis when they had been treated with cyclosporine. Within six months of cyclosporine treatment thick, dark hair growths started on the face, trunk and limbs. Minoxidil causes hypertrichosis on the face and extremities mainly in only a few short days. Since congenital hypertrichosis has genetic origin, it does not have any permanent cure. If acquired hypertrichosis is caused by external factors such as eating disorder or intake of medication, it can be prevented by making lifestyle change or avoiding the intake of medication. The hair growth that occurs in congenital hypertrichosis can be treated using some temporary hair removing method such as bleaching, trimming, shaving, plucking and waxing which are affordable and more convenient. 9
Some more expensive, but longer lasting treatment for hypertrichosis are chemical depilatories, electrosurgical epilation, topical efflornithine and laser treatments. Bleaching: Bleaching facial and body hair is considered a hair removal method even though it doesnot actually get rid of any hair.however, it s made to remove the dark pigment of hair and colour it to a light shades of blonde. The lightened hair often becomes less noticeable or striking. It s a good option for those who don t like the look of the hair and really don t mind the feel of it. Results last anywhere from two to four weeks depending on hair s thickness and how fast it grows in that area.it is fast and easy. Shaving: Electric shaver or razor can be used for shaving. It is fast, easy, effective and cheap. It s also the most temporary method of hair removal. Get a more effective shave by moisturizing the skin first. Shaving cream, hair conditioner and body wash help a razor glide smoothly over the skin and help prevent nicks, cuts, scraps. Plucking: Plucking hair with a pair of tweezers is an effective way to remove hair, but it can be very time-consuming.eyebrows and stray facial hairs are easily tamed with a pair of tweezers- the legs, not so much. Waxing: It removes hair from the root.the process consist of applying a resign to the skin which binds to both the hair and a strip of cloth. The cloth is then pulled off ( typically in the opposite direction of the hair growth) removing the hair. Possible side effects include pain, red bumps, infection, discoloration, ingrown hairs and torn skin. Chemical depilatories: Depilatories use a chemical called thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide that literally melts hair away. Thioglycolate disrupts disulphide bonds, which are the chemical bonds that hold skin and hair together.it s very effective but it can also be extremely irritating to the skin because the chemical ingredients can melt away skin cells. A depilatory is applied to the area with unwanted hair and left on for three to fifteen minutes. During this time chemical dissolves the hair and create a jelly like substance that is wiped or washed off after the appropriate amount of time. 10
Because depilatories are so abrasive, they should first be tested on a small patch of skin at least 48 hours prior to a larger application. Applying hydrocortisone cream after hair removal may help relieve irritation. Electrosurgical epilation: It represents a permanent mode of hair removal. Treatment involves the insertion of a disposable fine wire needle into the hair follicle. Through this needle a regulated and controlled electric current is transmitted from a sophisticated apparatus known as epilator. This procedure has to be performed by a highly trained professional in order to be effective as the hair bulb should not be missed by the fine needle. Disadvantages are the length and number of treatments required for permanent removal of hair from a particular body site and discomfort during treatment, which is why the method is poorly tolerated in children. Generally operators can only deal with 25 to 100 hairs per session and individual treatments last from 15 minutes to 1 hour. Problems that may occur are prefollicular inflammation, post inflammatory hyper or hypopigmentation. This method is more suitable treatment of localized, coarse hair. Laser hair removal:hair removal is a common application of laser technology, but it s not permanent and not for everyone. Lasers work by emitting light at various wavelength, energy output and pulse width. Most lasers used for hair removal targets melanin or pigment and are therefore designed to burn structures that contain melanin, the more damage. Laser hair removal works best for light- skinned people with dark hair. Laser treatment must be repeated. Topical eflornithine: Eflornithine is the first topical drug for the treatment of unwanted facial and chin hair. It does not remove the hair but rather slows it s growth. The cell surrounding the base of each hair(called the hair follicle) undergo rapid growth and maturation as they transform into hairs. Certain proteins called polyamines are needed for this rapid cell growth and differentiation. The production of these polyamines depends on activity of an enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase(odc). Eflornithine is believe to block ODC, slowing the growth and differentiation of the cells within the hair follicles. IPSHITA GAYEN M.PHARM 2 ND YEAR GNIPST 11
