Eucalyptus Globulus is a popular variety as it produces a robust essential oil that offers excellent cleansing and stimulating properties. 4 5

4 HARVEST Plantations of Eucalyptus Globulus have been farmed in the Tamil Nadu State since the 1840 s. Below left: The hilly ranges are perfect for Eucalyptus growth. Below right: Leaves are harvested by hand and are dried for two days prior to processing for essential oil extraction. In the Tamil Nadu state of Southern India, the warm tropical climate offers the perfect conditions for cultivation of Eucalyptus globulus trees. The region has a history of Eucalypt harvesting that extends back over 50 years and local farmers are expanding organic plantations to meet the demand for the popular plant species. Introduction of Eucalyptus With over 700 known species, Eucalyptus is one of the most recognisable plants in the world. Most commonly associated with the Australian landscape, the vast majority of these species are native to our continent, however over the last few centuries exportation of seeds has seen the development of agricultural estates around the globe. Different Eucalypt varieties can now be found from Europe to the Americas, to Africa and the Mediterranean and throughout Asia, including China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka as well as India. In India, the first introduction of Eucalyptus plants occurred in the 1790 s when seeds arrived from Australia. The Tamil Nadu region became a significant location for plantations during the 1840 s and 1850 s when the Eucalyptus globulus species was farmed for firewood. As India s population grew, the need for firewood increased, and even today, the supply of wood does not meet the overall demand. Plantations of Eucalypt provide a much needed fuel source for many of the country s poorest communities and in turn help to protect the natural forests from being cut down in times of shortage. Nowadays, there are over 1 million hectares of land dedicated to Eucalyptus farming across India. There are 5 key species being raised including Citriodora, Grandis and a robust hybrid known as Mysore Gum. Along with Eucalyptus globulus which is now a particularly important Certified Organic cultivar due to its essential oil production. > Farming communities have a deep connection to their land and are dedicated to their Certified Organic crops. 6 7

HARVEST The rudimentary distillation facilities are close to the plantations to minimise the amount of transportation required. Below left: These simple stills enable the farmers to extract the essential oil in a timely fashion. Eucalyptus Globulus Plantations Eucalyptus globulus plantations are established in areas that have a high elevation. Initially new plants are germinated from seed in local nurseries where they are maintained for a minimum of 3 months. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed they are transplanted into a structured form across the farming site and the farmers tend to them diligently to ensure they grow to their full potential. Maturity is reached after approximately 3 years and from then bi-annual harvests will continue for up to 20 years. Well maintained trees can grow up to 30 metres in height and create an impressive landscape across the hilly ranges. The warm temperatures are ideal for the Eucalyptus trees and rich fertile soil provides the required nutrients without human intervention. Irrigation for the plantations is solely from the seasonal monsoon rains, however the species is sufficiently resilient to periods of drought which can occur if a monsoon fails to deliver enough rainfall. Eucalyptus Harvesting and Processing In the Tamil Nadu region, the peak season for harvest is throughout winter. This harvest commences at the end of October and continues through until February or March depending on the onset of mist that signals the coming of spring. The secondary harvest does not start until after the first rains arrive. This is usually towards the end of May or June. Weather permitting this harvest is undertaken from mid-june all the way until September, when the monsoon season arrives with force. Harvesting is a manual process that involves professional tree climbers scaling each tree and removing the leaves by hand. These highly skilled harvesters can collect up to 1 tonne of plant material every day. On average a single tree will yield approximately 300 to 500 kilograms of leaves each harvest. The leaves are bundled and transported to nearby distillation facilities where they undergo a 2 day drying process before > 8 9

6 HARVEST essential oil extraction begins. Approximately 100 kilograms of leaf matter is needed to produce 1 kilogram of the crisp organic essential oil. Clean and Clear Essential Oil Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil contains a minimum of 52% 1,8-Cineole content. This is the major constituent within the oil s profile and is the key component reported in quality assurance documents. It provides the oil with the clear, penetrating aroma that is distinctly recognisable as Eucalyptus. The strong, lively scent is excellent for refreshing the mind and can have a cooling action when feeling emotionally hot and flustered. Eucalyptus is also said to improve concentration and focus so is ideal for use in an office or study environment. Aromatherapeutically, Eucalyptus Globulus is often the practitioner s choice for supporting the respiratory system. Inhalations or chest balms can offer relief from congestion and it is often utilised in natural cold remedies. When incorporated into a massage product, the essential oil can help alleviate muscular aches and pains, especially in after-sport treatments. The astringent action of Eucalyptus makes it a valuable ingredient in men s aftershave products. Partnered with Lime and Peppermint it offers an interesting aroma profile that leaves the skin feeling fresh and invigorated. It is also an excellent choice for cleansing products such as body washes, soaps or foaming facial cleansers as it helps to remove congestion and brighten a dull complexion. When blending with Eucalyptus, it will naturally synergise as a top note within the mix, so consider combining it with deeper Aromatic or Herbal olfactive family essential oils. It blends well with Lavender, Frankincense and Spearmint, or create an excellent anti-bacterial blend by combining it with Tea Tree, Rosemary and Thyme oils. 1 Eucalyptus Globulus is an excellent addition to massage oil blends, especially for after sport or energising body treatments. 7 ESSENTIAL OILS In this issue of Oily, we explore the sweet and splendid Floral Olfactive Family. You will love the complex aroma tones and the delightful perfumery opportunities on offer with this group of scents. Characteristics of the Floral Family Floral Family essential oils are typically sourced from flowers or flowering plants. They are recognised for their sweet, rich, sometimes heady aromatic properties that can enhance a natural cosmetic or perfumery blend with a touch of feminine intrigue. Most Floral Family oils will synergise as the middle note in the heart of an aromatic blend and offer an unmistakable resounding quality. Essential oils within this family are known to support emotional wellbeing. They offer a balancing effect and promote feelings of love and contentment. Aromatherapists will often choose Floral oils to support different female body systems and they can be employed to help alleviate mental and physical blockages caused by negativity. Essential Oils to know from the Floral Family 1. Geranium steam distilled/absolute solvent extracted > flowering plant The sweet, deep floral aroma of Geranium is somewhat reminiscent of Rose but with penetrating warmth that inundates the senses. Geranium is available as an essential oil or an absolute. The essential oil is sourced from two different countries of origin, Egypt or Madagascar. The Madagascan oil is known as Geranium Bourbon and typically has a slightly sweeter, lighter scent profile. The absolute is dark olive green in colour with a thicker viscosity. Cosmetically, Geranium is ideal for all skin types as it helps to balance sebum production and keeps the complexion looking soft and supple. It is also an excellent oil for cleansing and can give new vitality to pale, lifeless skin. > introducing: the floral family The sweet notes of Floral essential oils add a soft feminine tone to blends and natural perfumes. They commonly sit as the middle note, or heart of an aromatic blend

8 ESSENTIAL OILS 2. Jasmine steam distilled/absolute solvent extracted > flowering plant Jasmine is available in essential oil and absolute form. The absolute is sourced from Egypt or India, and Jasmine Sambac is also from India. With a sweet, intoxicating aroma, Jasmine is a standout perfumery ingredient often partnered with other Floral Family oils, such as Neroli and Rose, to create opulent scents. Emotionally it can instil confidence and encourage a positive mindset. It s useful for women in labour, but should be avoided during pregnancy. Skin softening benefits make it perfect for rich body butters. When used in cosmetic products, it offers toning properties and is suitable for dry or sensitive skin types. 3. Lotus Pink solvent extracted > flower The honey-like floral aroma of Lotus Pink absolute has soft, fruity tones with a subtle earthiness. It has an amber brown colour and thick viscosity that performs best when slightly warmed to become more fluid. Often used in Ayurvedic applications, it sustains a meditative mood and encourages a stillness of thought. It is linked with deep spirituality in religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. Perfumery is the primary use for this captivating aromatic ingredient. 4. Neroli (Orange Flower) steam distilled / absolute solvent extracted > flower With a distinctive citrus-floral aroma, Neroli is a favourite for both aromatherapists and perfume houses. It will soothe emotions and is perfect for promoting a peaceful atmosphere. When incorporated in massage application, it offers a muscle relieving action and helps tone the skin. Cosmetically, it s an anti-ageing ingredient that can improve skin elasticity and the complexion. When blended with other key perfumery ingredients, such as Bergamot, Jasmine, Rose or Sandalwood, the result is a sophisticated scent profile. 5. Palmarosa steam distilled > grass or leaf Whilst Palmarosa oil is not extracted from flowers, it does belong in the Floral Family aromatically. The dry, floral scent has a hint of Rose and is often used with it as an economical scent extender. By adding Palmarosa into a blend with a small amount of Rose oil, the entire Rose scent is amplified. Recognised for its ability to uplift the spirit, it s a refreshing aroma that can help bring emotional clarity. It s also helpful in skincare as it can boost sebum production and has a hydrating effect. Palmarosa is a great choice for facial moisturisers. 6. Rose steam distilled / absolute solvent extracted > flower Rose must be the Queen of the Floral Family. It s a feminine oil and one of the most sought after for natural cosmetics and perfumery. Available as Rose Otto essential oil or the bright red-coloured Rose absolute, both offer a sweet floral scent that is all-encompassing. While Rose Otto is quite heady, the absolute has a deeper note. Emotionally, Rose can lift the heart, boost self-esteem and nurture the soul. Anti-ageing products benefit from the inclusion of Rose oil as it has excellent emollient qualities and can help reduce redness. 7. Ylang Ylang solvent distilled > flower The exotic floral aroma of Ylang Ylang is instantly recognisable with alluring sweet, heavy notes. Ylang Ylang grades vary depending on the time lapsed during the extraction process. Extra is the initial portion of the distillate, followed by First Grade and Third Grade. Complete is the entire distillate unseparated. Each grade has a slightly different aroma, Extra and First Grades enjoy bright, floral scents, with deeper tones in Third Grade. Complete is well-rounded and has the most complexity. When used in skincare Ylang Ylang has a balancing effect which is suitable for most skin types and promotes shine when included in haircare products. Blending with Floral Aromas Floral Family essential oils balance the middle notes within a blend. They offer tender, sweet tones that elevate top notes such as Citruses and harmonise with deep Wood base notes. Right: However, it solidifies to a soft, creamy butter consistency when below 20 C. We are excited to announce that our Babassu Butter is now available in Certified Organic. CERTIFIED ORGANIC BABASSU BUTTER With a soft, silky texture and wonderful emollient properties, Certified Organic Babassu Butter is an impressive natural raw material. The Orbignya Oleifera palm is native to tropical rainforest regions across South America and in particular, Brazil. These tall palms produce hundreds of nuts that have a hard shell protecting the oil rich seed kernel inside. Each seed contains approximately 50% oil producing a significantly high yield. Through mechanical pressing extraction methods the oil content is removed and is subjected to a number of refining processes. These include filtration to remove excess solid plant material, followed by neutralisation, decolouration and deodorisation. Once refined the Babassu oil has a delicate butter consistency in temperatures around 20 C. Once the ambient temperature increases above 20 C the Babassu Butter will become increasing soft until it completely liquefies to a clear fluid oil. Liquefied Babassu Butter has an appealing glossy appearance and a very light skin feel. It penetrates the epidermal layer quickly and easily, leaving the skin feeling soft and supple. This feature makes it an excellent inclusion to rich massage oil products, being mindful to use in low percentages to minimise potential for solidification in cooler environments. Massage clients will love the non-greasy after feel. Babassu Butter is also an ideal choice for cream, lotion and body butter formulations. In emulsions it acts as a natural alternative to the synthetic ingredient dimethicone, which is often used as an anti-foaming agent. In lip or body balms, the butter can increase the moisture content of the skin. It also offers protective properties that minimise negative effects from the external environment such as chapped lips from dry, cold winds. 10 LIFESTYLE Want to throw away your multi-purpose sprays, bleaches and other chemical cleaners? There are many natural alternatives you can choose that offer excellent results with bright aromas to keep your environment clean and healthy. In the Kitchen Anti-bacterial essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Tea Tree or Cajeput are ideal for use in food preparation areas. Add a few drops of oil to a damp cloth and wipe down benches before use. If the counter tops have some extra stains, sprinkle a small amount of sodium bicarbonate and rub them down with white vinegar. If the kitchen sink has lost its shine, it s time to try a mixture of sodium bicarbonate, water and a few drops of a fresh citrus oil such as Lemon or Orange Sweet. Use a scourer or sponge and apply the mixture to the sink. Gently polish the bowl to remove stains and enhance the appearance of the stainless steel. A simple rinse with fresh water will reveal the sparkling results. The oven is always the least favourite job, but with a quarter cup of borax dissolved in an equal part hot water and the addition of Lime and Rosemary oils, it will be a bit more pleasant. Add a quarter cup of sodium bicarbonate to the borax solution and apply to the oven walls. Leave for a significant amount of time, overnight if possible, before using a clean, damp cloth to wipe away residue. SEOC s Sulphate Free Gel base with the addition of Grapefruit or Orange Sweet oil is a perfect dishwashing liquid. 11 LIFESTYLE In the Bathroom The build up of soap scum on tiles is inevitable but a mixture of sodium bicarbonate, vinegar and Pine oil will help. Create a foam by slowly pouring the vinegar into a bowl of sodium bicarbonate, add the oil and stir. Apply the mixture with a sponge and rub the tile surfaces. For extra tough scum a gentle scourer might be necessary. Toilet stains can be easily banished with borax and lemon juice. Gloves are essential and use a scrubbing brush to apply to the bowl. Leave the sticky mixture for a few minutes before flushing clean. For any glass surfaces, combine one cup of white vinegar, a quarter cup salt and five drops Lemon oil. The vinegar and Lemon oil will help remove greasy soap build up whilst the salt gives an extra scrub action. A soft brush will be the best applicator as it boosts the cleansing action. Once rinsed, use a chamois for a crystal clear finish. Hydrosols and Infused Waters are ideal for deodorising sprays. Choosing a robust scent such as Lavender Hydrosol from Bulgaria or Tea Tree Infused Water will be sure to keep the bathroom smelling delightful. Adding an extra few drops of essential oil can boost the scent even further, however a good shake before use would be required. In the Laundry When the whites are starting to look a little dull why not try an overnight soak? A mix of water, lemon juice and Lemon oil will help bring new life to a favourite t-shirt. Adding half a cup of borax to the washing cycle will further enhance the brightening action. For tough oily stains, apply Eucalyptus oil directly to clothing. Allow it to evaporate before washing as normal. Eucalyptus is also ideal for washing towels after massage. Add directly to a warm water wash with sodium bicarbonate to help lift oil residue and extend the life of treatment towels and linen. Liquid laundry detergent can be made by dissolving one cup of borax in one cup of warm water. Combine this with one cup of sodium bicarbonate, half a cup of SEOC s Sulphate Free Gel base and a few drops of Lavender or Ylang Ylang oil. Add three more cups of water to this mix and you are ready to wash. Half a cup will be sufficient for a full load of washing. In the Living Areas Each type of flooring requires a different cleaner. To deodorise carpet, sprinkle sodium bicarbonate that has been mixed with Lavender or Geranium oil. Allow the powder to draw out odours from the carpet fabric for at least an hour before a thorough vacuum. For tiled areas, a solution of white vinegar, hot water and Lime oil will effectively cut through dirt and grime when used with a mop. Or for timber flooring, combine cold, strong black tea with Cedarwood or Sandalwood oil for the best results and a natural glow. To let the sun shine through crisp, clean windows, combine one part white vinegar to four parts warm water in a spray bottle. Add Pine or Cedarwood oil for the scented option and use a few pages from an old newspaper as the applicator. After a good wipe down, streaks will be a thing of the past. Spot cleaning walls is easy with SEOC s Sulphate Free Gel base, water, vinegar and Orange Sweet oil. A soft cloth dipped in this general purpose cleaner will easily wipe away grubby finger marks or other smudges. Finally, vaporising essential oils in any room of the house can enhance the ambience of the environment. For kitchen scents why not try herbaceous foody tones such as Basil, Peppermint or spicy Black Pepper? In the bathroom and laundry, bright clean aromas such as Niaouli and Fragonia are ideal for promoting a feeling of cleanliness. And in other living areas, select oils that suit the planned activity, such as Lemon and Rosemary in a study or office, Lavender and Marjoram in the bedroom for peaceful sleep, or friendly citrus notes of Tangerine and Mandarin in the living room for a happy welcoming space. Including natural alternatives in your regular cleaning tasks can help make these jobs more enjoyable. Experiment with different essential oils to create your own favourite products
