We enjoyed seeing so many of you who stopped into the salon to share in the happy occasion. Since opening our doors in 2005, our mission has been to create the utmost positive, professional and creative atmosphere for our clients and staff. 2 2 Seasonal inspirations Spring into a fresh cut and a new you By Brenda Pacini HIP Stylist We made it through the winter. Hooray!!! Spring is here, and summer is chasing its tail. Not only will you be seeing flowers outside but you will also be seeing a lot of floral patterns in clothing this season. It s also time for a fresh new hairstyle. Whether you are seeking a trim for your dead ends or a whole new look, your team at HIP Salon can coach you on the trends for Spring & Summer You choose the length of hair you are comfortable with. From long hair to pixies there is a trend for you. Ponytails If long hair is what you desire, try a loose ponytail or braid. Your ponytail will be most fashionable if it is tied low on the nape of you neck. On the flip side, it is also trendy to slick your hair back into that same low tie. The key to a ponytail that doesn t look like you spent the afternoon at the gym in sweats is to make sure you have fresh ends. It is very important to get a haircut even though you are keeping your hair long. Wearing your hair down is always nice too. The straight wet look is in, along with wearing it in a wavy 1970 s style. You can also change your look by simply moving from a side part to a center part. Bobs Are you still rocking a bob? Well, keep rocking it. With a few little changes, you will be right up to speed with the new trends. Grow that bob a little past your shoulders with long, choppy layers. Add a straight fringe, or part it in the center for a change. Wear your bob messy with a wave or straight with a couple of strands crimped to add some texture. Bring out your natural wave or use a curling wand to add a loose, wavy feel. If you re a fan of straight hair, try to get a little texture by putting the flat iron away and using a round brush for some volume and movement. Scarlett-inspired Were you inspired by all the celebs short hairstyles on the red carpet? From Scarlett Johansson to Faith Hill, the Academy Award occupants were sporting many varieties of short hair. Shaved sides with longer lengths on the top is still a great look. Messy short hair with lots of volume is big this season. If you are not a fan of volume, then boyish and sleek is also a cool way to display your style. Try Something New Afraid to try a new style? Don t be. Our talented staff is well trained in providing professional hair extensions. Even adding just a few hair extensions to a short style can change your look. 3 3 By Esteban De LaTorre HIP Hair & Makeup Stylist Drama shapes eyes, brows, lips As the weather gets progressively warmer, watch for these gorgeous makeup trends to light up faces. To achieve a natural glowing skin, I always like to start off by using a BB cream. This will help to prime, smooth, hydrate and protect your skin from harmful UV rays. One of our dirty little makeup secrets is the art of highlighting and contouring made famous by celebrities like Kim Kardashian. This technique creates light and dark areas to sculpt and shape our face. Using this method will not only give us a mini facelift but it helps to accentuate our best features. Makeup by MEI HIP Salon s own branded makeup has an excellent selection of mineral-based makeup including BB Cream, bronzers, blushes and concealers, not to mention shadows, liners, mascaras and glosses. Brows Another hot trend is BROWS, BROWS, BROWS! We ve seen everything from dramatic, bold brows to a more natural look. For natural-looking brows, use a color brow gel/powder. This will help you to have a well-groomed brow shape. To create a textured brow, make sure you brush the hair upward with your spoolie brush. You want to be able to see every hair stroke. To shade, you want to be multi-tonal throughout. I personally like using light strokes with a pencil and finishing it off with a waterproof brow pomade. The bolder the strokes are, the more dramatic the brows will look. Eyeliner Bust out your mom s black liner! That s right, ladies, because chic cat-eyes are in. Bigger and brighter eyes are the next big thing. An easy trick to make small eyes appear bigger is to apply the liner from the center of the lower lash line toward the outer edge of the eye. The strokes of the brush should be directed toward the outer corner of the eye. Try switching the black liner to a more playful color. Play with the color of your eyes that you want to bring out. For blue eyes, focus on warm coppers, rich golds and corals. For dark brown eyes, try softening them by using light pastel shadows of golds, warm beiges and plums. For a dramatic look, use royal blues and greens. For green or hazel eyes, use a variation of purple for an alluring look. For hazel eyes which contain a range of color, you can play it safe with neutrals. Or for an unexpected look, go with burgundy or rust. Stick with shimmer for the extra flair. Lips Every time I turn on the TV, I obsess over Taylor Swift and JLo. Get to know these two celebrities; they are trend-setters. Taylor Swift has been just rocking a variety of deep red-orange lip tones. Making her a poppy-ular trend. This color is super versatile with any outfit or skin tone. It also makes your teeth appear whiter. For a natural look, JLo has been keeping it very angelic yet irresistible with her nude lip color and just a hint of gloss. Selecting a soft-nude pink undertone will make your skin appear richer and your lips look fuller. To see a touch of reflection, just add lip gloss with a hint of shimmer. Great for everyday wear.

4 4 Soft & Simple Color trends warm up as beach season nears By Tyler Frazier HIP Colourist Beach season is almost here, so it s time to liven up our locks and ditch that dull, cold-weather color! This doesn t mean getting a drastic hair makeover, but when is there a better time to make a change than at the start of a new season?! Ombre With the warmer weather, you ll be seeing a shift in the world of ombres! It s time to break up that dramatic contrast and go toward a more natural effect. The best result would be using your natural shade and adding caramel, amber and golden highlights (warm or cool depending on your skin tone) for a softer effect. This will create a blended and multidimensional look. Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba have been seen recently sporting this look. Brunettes The trend for brunettes is simple but sassy! Many celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Anne Hathaway have been showing off beautiful dark, monotonal shades recently. If you have already achieved this look, the upkeep will be simple. Stop in to get a gloss to keep that color looking shiny! Reds It s all about redheads this spring! The hot new thing is soft pastel tones such as strawberry (Jessica Chastain), copper (Julianne Moore, Emma Stone), and chestnut reds. This will be best achieved if you re not going lighter than, or starting with, your natural color. Otherwise, stripping your hair will be necessary. Blondes Last but not least, it s time to talk about blondes! Platinum blonde hair with a dark eyebrow is everything this season (i.e. Kim Kardashian). But beware! Taking your dark tresses that light will cause some damage, so tread lightly and take baby steps. Caramel blondes are another biggie! Blending warm, caramelly, buttery tones to your faded blonde color will add tons of dimension and shine. The brighter sun will help you out, keeping your blonde looking fresh and natural.

5 5 By Jimmy Spratt HIP Senior Stylist Hey everyone!! It s Jimmy Spratt here with some spring and summer product tips and trends. Personally, I m not a fighter, but Mother Nature likes to battle us in the salon. (She s so mean at times... I m just sayin.) So, I lean on my industry standard, Bumble and Bumble, to help. If you want to be a Sexy Beach, loosely braid your damp hair in three or four sections. Letting it dry, undo and loosen the strands then work in some Surf Spray and you re ready to go! Half-up hairstyles are great as well. For some satiny grip and volume, spray in some dry-spun texture spray all over. Then work a dab of Semisumo for a light shine and separation. Pull hair half up in any way that complements. Loose braids are an easy way to lighten and lessen the hair. They can be incorporated around the face or off to the side and down. Or wind into a bun. Spray de Mode is great for braiding. It provides polymers with shine-enhancing silicones that hold and fight frizz. Spray the sections on dry or slightly damp hair and braid away! When it s too hot to think about anything this summer, pile your hair into a pompedup top-knot that shows off texture and lift. Or try a sleek ponytail high or low. A nice fringe (bangs) looks great with either. I m in love with the CoCo!! Bb Créme de Coco, that is!! It s shampoo and conditioner that s perfect for moisture and shine. It smells unlike Illinois. And for the color-treated there is the UV-protecting Color-Minded shampoo Be a Sexy Beach with these products By Jessie Ramacitti HIP Colourist Spring is here and summer is coming, so start protecting your hair. Kerastase has three amazing leave-in conditioners that are applied to towel-dried hair. Ciment Thermique is a heat-activated blowdry primer for weakened hair that strengthens hair from the inside and recreates the external layer. This is a great product for blondes and people who use a lot of heat on their hair. Nectar Thermique is a heat-activated blowdry primer for dry hair that wipes away dull and rough hair surfaces and replaces them with intense shine. This would be good if you feel like your hair needs added moisture. Keratine Thermique is a heat-activated primer that provides instantly smooth hair. It has anti-frizz and anti-humidity agents that tame while leaving hair with shine. This would be great for someone who has and conditioner. Remember... Shampoo your roots and condition your ends. Washing every 2-4 days and using texture sprays and dry shampoos will keep you color longer and your scalp oil will naturally balance out. Don t forget to brush!! Bumble has a boar bristle/nylon brush that you ll have for the rest of your life! It moves the natural oils through your hair from scalp to ends. Peace and hair grease! 4 products to tame frizz, protect hair any frizz or whose hair is affected by humidity. Bumble and Bumble has recently come out with Hairdressers Oil Shampoo, Conditioner and Primer. The shampoo and conditioner are sulfate-free and infused with six different oils that make hair softer, smoother, silkier and less tangled. It also tames frizz. Hairdressers Oil is perfect for color-treated hair. The Hairdressers Oil Primer is applied on towel-dried hair and protects against breakage from heat and UV radiation without weighing down the hair.

6 6 Starting my memoirs as a male hairdresser By Carlos Chuck Medina HIP Stylist-in-Training High school, loud music, stud-covered leather jackets, The Ramones, tattoos, piercings, Joan Jett, perfect neon green Mohawks, The Clash, blue Liberty spikes... Yup, that s how it started. Now fast forward 10 years later (I ll save the inbetween details for my Memoirs of a Male Hairdresser), I graduated from Empire Beauty School and knew I wanted to work somewhere better than awesome. Working at a drive-thru salon (where you get your bob with a side of fries and a cold apple pie) was not an option. And at the opposite side of the spectrum, I couldn t work at a salon so uptight I would have to wear a tuxedo 7 days of the week and laugh with my mouth closed. Basically, I d have to give up my entire personality. Finally, I found HIP Salon! As soon as I walked into the salon I could feel the positive energy. People s smiles were exploding into laughter. Everyone was having a better than awesome time. I joined the HIP Salon team as an assistant and stylist intern. I m so lucky to be working with such talented and experienced stylists and colorists, who give me daily technical tips and hair situations. I have gotten to know such an amazing group of individuals. The stylist internship has provided me with priceless one-on-one continuing education. Every Monday, my educators Debra and Salvatore teach and guide me with new skills and techniques. I m looking forward to completing the stylist internship program and joining the floor. Razor-sharp learning while in the Big Apple By Jon Cernak HIP Stylist Touring Bumble and Bumble University in New York was a dream come true. Having heard stories from coworkers about the University, I had an idea of what to expect. I intended to soak up as much as I could from the two-day razor class I would participate in. Bumble and Bumble is known for its razor-cutting techniques. Founded in 1977, b&b continues to fine-tune its techniques to keep current with today s styles and fashion. After introducing the class who represented salons around the nation, we met our six educators in the swanky 101-seat theatre. The educators are extremely talented at their trade and would be teaching us how to do a long-layered cut and a bob using only a razor. We first watched a long-layered razor-cut demonstration. Afterward, it was our turn to try the techniques. While working with my first model, I made a couple mistakes right off. I took a deep breath and adjusted my technique with the help of my educator. I completed the cut and hand-dried my model s hair (another technique Bumble and Bumbles uses). She was thrilled with her new hairstyle, and I was satisfied that I could apply the instruction into a top-notch do. After a delicious lunch, I jumped right back to the chair to work with my second model. I avoided my previous mistakes and gave her a hairstyle that she was ecstatic about. The second day followed a similar format with a razor-cut bob. The team also revealed product knowledge and new products yet to be released. The day turned out to be very informative. Throughout the two days, students would ask each other, What are you here for? I responded, To get some extra inspiration and fully complete a razor-cut without shears. I achieved that and more. In the end, I graduated with flying colors to take the next class. As a hairdresser, I never want to stop learning. The industry offers so much room for creativity. There are always new techniques and trends, and I strive to learn and apply as much as I can back at the salon.

Debra and Vince opened the salon on Feb. 10, Transform into amazing lashes By Jennifer Conroy HIP Senior Stylist I just completed my eyelash extension training courses for my Xtreme Lashes certification. It was long and very hard work!! It started with two days of hands-on training. Back at HIP, I worked on models until I was completely comfortable with the process. Then it was back to class for another two days of training (a total of 28 hours) to receive my certificate. It takes a lot of patience, dedication and time to master the job. Safety, hygiene and complete consumer satisfaction are the standards that Xtreme Lashes demand from all Xtreme Lashes-certified stylists. There are a lot of benefits to wearing eyelash extensions. Extensions can eliminate the need for eye makeup. You can free yourself from the wasted time of eyelash curlers and mascara! Plus, your eyelashes have a longer, thicker and more natural appearance. 8 Men: Style speaks louder than words By Salvatore Turco HIP Senior Stylist 8 Hot trends in men s haircuts this spring and summer are variations of the pompadour. I love this trend as it shows men moving away from that messy, just rolled out of bed look and moving toward a groomed style. These haircuts combine classic barbering with a modern twist. Unlike the traditional pompadour, these haircuts tend to be aggressively short on the sides and back while having some disconnection between the sides and the top. Ideally, these haircuts are best worn with a side part and styled with a formal men s styling product such as Bumble and Bumble s pomade or gel. They can also be worn down or dry for a more casual look. Let s walk through variations of the modern pompadour. A classic tapered haircut. For this style, I cut the sides and back aggressively short using a 000 blade on the Andis T BLADE. The sides and back were blended into the top using a clipper-over-comb technique resulting in minimal disconnection. When blowdrying the hair, I direct it up and back to add height to the style. The classic pompadour. I took up the sides and back tight using a 000 blade and blended up into considerable length on top. I really like this haircut as my client has very dark hair, so you really see a nice transition between the skin-tight sides and longer top. I blow-dried the front of the haircut up and back to add height and styled with Bumble and Bumble Sumotech. The aggressively short pompadour. For this style, the hair is faded skin-tight low around the sides and back and quickly blends into considerable length on top. The blending really comes from styling. If you were to comb the style straight down, it would look like a shattered-textured male bob. I really like the sharp contrast between the skin tight sides and the length on top. Pair this with some jeans, a white shirt and cool shoes!! A man s hairstyle is an intensely personal thing. We may talk about it less, we may hide it better, but we fixate on hair as much as the ladies do. The way you cut and style your hair provides the world with clues about how you see yourself, your cultural IQ and what s in your Netflix queue. So before you arrive for that next interview or drop a line on that blonde across the bar, do yourself a favor and find out what you re announcing with your HAIRDO. (These predictions, by the way, are guaranteed to be as accurate as a horoscope.) And remember always stay and be HIP!!!! E.
