1 Miss Knauer Pds. 2, 5 7 Creative Response Assignment: Justification The creative response option I chose was the iphone. I am completing it for the science fiction novel Divergent. The main character s name is Tris, and she is being initiated from one faction (Abnegation) into another (Dauntless). She must learn to become fearless and comfortable in life or death situations. She must fight on nearly a daily basis to prove her worth and strength to those in the Dauntless faction. She catches the eye of a superior nicknamed Four. This is his iphone. Starting from the outside in, the lock screen on Four s phone is of the claustrophobic chamber from his fear simulation. The home screen is a photograph of his father. There are two images on his camera roll: one of Tris, the main character and his love interest, and one of Jeanine Matthews, the main antagonist in the story. The top 5 favorite songs on Four s phone are (in order): I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, I Won t Back Down by Tom Petty, When You Believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, Remember the Name by Fort Minor, and Wherever You Will Go by The Calling. The top used apps on his phone are: (1) SAS Survival (2) Ramblr (3) Remember the Milk (4) QuickTrain (5) 312. I placed the photo of his claustrophobia as the lock screen because I know that is Four s first fear. Four is not this character s real name, but people gave him this nickname because in his fear simulation he only has four fears. The fear simulation is part of the test each member of the society must take to place them in a particular faction. His fourth and most intense fear is of his father who abused him when he was a child. His father would lock him in the closet as a punishment, which explains his claustrophobia. The reason why he has Tris as one image on his phone is not just because they are in love, but because throughout the story she

2 consistently challenges him to change the way he thinks about life, and the way he handles his fears. Jeanine Matthews is the second image because she is the evil that he must face in the story. She challenges his fears in a much different and evil way. SAS Survival is an app that was created based off a book that a survivalist named John Lofty Wiseman created. This app contains a Morse code signalling device, a sun compass, photo galleries of poisonous and medicinal plants, and other tools to help one survive on their own. I believe Four would use this app frequently because he leads the initiates on many outings; it is part of his job to familiarize them with the territory where they live because they act as security for their community. As their leader, I imagine Four would need to know how to navigate dangerous situations on a regular basis. Ramblr is a travel app that allows you to tell digital stories with maps. Using the app, you create tracks and can either recreate past trips or plan future trips. You can insert pictures, journal entries, etc. to record the memories. I believe Four would use this because he is so active, and he is responsible for understanding the area they inhabit. Remember the Milk is simply an organization app that helps you remember what you need to do during the day. It syncs with all your social media and accounts so that you get reminders everywhere for more important things, like meeting up with new initiates after their assignment ceremony. I believe Four would really need an app like this because of his leadership position in Dauntless. QuickTrain and 312 are both apps for people who live in the Chicago area. Although Divergent is a dystopian novel, one of its familiar elements of everyday life is that it is set in the city of Chicago. Trains play an important role not only in the first book, but in the entire series. I believe that Four would want to know where he could pick up a train, what its route is, and other important travel information. 312 is an app that helps non natives of the city (which, arguably, he is) navigate the neighborhoods

3 around the metropolitan area. I think that Four would use this when they are in the more climactic parts of the book, and members of Dauntless are on the run. As their leader, he would need to know the ins and outs of the city scape so that he can take his people to safety! This was not a requirement, but I also added a phone case design. It is of the four faction symbols, just like the tattoo he has on his back. In the book, Tris questions his tattoo because usually you would only take the tattoo of Dauntless. (Sidenote: this is one key characteristic of those members of Dauntless. They are all tatted up!) He explains to her that his tattoo relates to his goal for the future not only on a personal level, but also on a societal level. He has the symbols of every faction tattooed on him because he wants to uphold the qualities of each, to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest. However, he also wants to see the factions come together to create one unified society in the future. This is how the phone represents Four s character...
