2 Tim Johnson The Luminescent Ground Exhibition 4 December February 2014 First Floor Galleries 1 2 Ikon presents the first European survey of work by Australian artist Tim Johnson (born 1947, Sydney). One of the most remarkable artists of our time, his curiosity and unpretentiousness are rare, and so too his smart knowingness with respect to artistic mannerisms. Early works in this exhibition include installation photography and text pieces made during a trip to England, France, Germany and the Netherlands during , photographic documentation of performances, and paintings and video inspired by Australian punk band Radio Birdman. The paintings with which Johnson came to prominence during the 1980s, arising out of collaborations with aboriginal artists such as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, are key to our understanding of his artistic practice overall, and the spirit they embody continues to inform his new and recent work. Now Johnson s paintings are an extraordinary combination of influences and references. They are populated by Buddhist deities, Bodhisattvas, Native Americans as well as aboriginal figures, Tibetan monks, Vietnamese farmers, extra-terrestrials and Christian angels, floating in a pictorial space articulated by Papunya dots and circles, and fragments of landscape often oriental hills and cloudy skies that betray a world view that is at once conceptual and visionary. Johnson s work can be contextualised within a postmodern narrative, with an appropriation of motifs from diverse cultural sources demonstrating a release from aesthetic purism, and a generosity of spirit, whereby Johnson, in many recent paintings, invites others to join him in the creation of an artistic gesture. Buddhist images come courtesy of Nava Chapman, a self-styled artist, teacher, dreamer, seeker. Slave to Love and Beauty, while the ongoing UFO series orbits around space craft meticulously drawn by American artist Daniel Bogunovic, with Johnson providing cosmic backgrounds. Questions of artistic authorship, of art and exactly what it means are dwarfed by considerations of known unknowns, by illuminating leaps of faith. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition priced 15, special exhibition price 12, including an essay by Australian art historian Roger Benjamin. Visit Ikon s online shop at for the full range of Ikon s catalogues and editions. 1 Tim Johnson Light performances ( ) Gelatin silver photograph Courtesy the artist 2 Tim Johnson Linda Siddick (2013) Oil on board Courtesy the artist
3 3 3 David Tremlett Room (Grey and Grease) (Ikon) (2012) Pastel on paper 4 David Tremlett Drawing #1 (Japan Series) (Ikon) (2012) Pastel on paper 5 David Tremlett Pileup (drawing 2, Skolkovo) (Ikon) (2012) Pastel on paper 4 5 David Tremlett 3 Drawing Rooms Exhibition 4 December April 2014 Second Floor Galleries British artist David Tremlett, best known for his site-specific wall drawings, makes a vast new work for Ikon, transforming the second floor galleries with geometric shapes, applied directly to the walls using pastel pigment and engine grease. Each of the three rooms has a contrasting composition: horizontal and vertical rectangular blocks of vivid colour, and grey and black, playing off the volumes of architectural space in order to retune our perception of them. Like all of Tremlett s wall drawings, this work for Ikon has been conjured up in the artist s imagination, before becoming scale studio drawings. The creation of the final work takes place over several weeks, with the artist and his assistants applying the colour painstakingly by hand. Tremlett s artistic practice, developed after his formal training at Falmouth School of Art, Birmingham College of Art and the Royal College of Art, is characterised by a critical examination of what sculpture and indeed art could be; an interest in the creative process of making, rather than focusing on a final result. Tremlett refers to his work as objects, flat sculpture, rather than images which, for him, imply illusion. His compositions typically consist of geometric forms, abstract arrangements of arcs, circles, trapezoids, text and line formal constructs which emanate a pure joy of colour and hue, and relationships between geometry and curved line. A small publication accompanies the exhibition priced 1, including an interview with David Tremlett and Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director. Visit Ikon s online shop at for the full range of Ikon s catalogues and limited editions.
4 Amikam Toren Carrots Exhibition 4 December February 2014 Tower Room Please note the Tower Room is only accessible via a number of steps 7 Israeli/British artist Amikam Toren returns to Ikon with two film selections, Carrots (2008) and Refreshments (2009). Based on true stories, narratives of experience from the artist s life, they are strangely moving tales touched with humour and edged with the surreal. They are filmic equivalents of vignettes, verbalised accounts superimposed onto unedited footage of locations where remembered events actually happened. These places, after the storytelling, are transformed from being unremarkable into sites of loaded melancholy. Kelland s work is preoccupied with the British sitcom of the 1960s and borne out of an interest in the language of popular culture. For Ikon, Kelland returns to the iconic British comedy character Harold Steptoe in The Englishman s Panacea (2013). He stands before a mirror in what is seemingly his morning ritual. Referencing Samuel Beckett s plays Waiting for Godot and Film, the action is repeated with each new manifestation taking us closer to the identity of Steptoe while simultaneously examining the mechanics of performance. 8 7 Amikam Toren Still from Carrots (2008) Video installation for monitor 17 minutes, 38 seconds Courtesy the artist and Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London 8 Dean Kelland The Englishman s Panacea (2013) Performance film still Photograph courtesy the artist

Ikon celebrates its 50th anniversary during A series of special exhibitions and events, collectively known as Ikon 50, is planned to mark the milestone year. Ikon Icons sees a return to Ikon by five key British artists from an exhibition programme that has articulated five decades, each presenting work in the gallery s Tower Room corresponding to their earlier shows here. John Salt was the first artist to exhibit at Ikon, in April 1965, on the cusp of his embrace of photorealism, whilst Ian Emes 1973 film animation heralded the start of a brilliant career that visualised the music of Pink Floyd. In 1988 Cornelia Parker exhibited her seminal work Thirty Pieces of Silver and ten years later likewise Yinka Shonibare s combination of found objects and African fabric was a defining moment. The new millennium was ushered in by an ambitious programme that included a survey of work by Julian Opie, our Ikon icon of the 2000s. The gallery programme for Ikon 50 opens in February with the first solo exhibition by Iraqi-Kurdish artist Jamal Penjweny, coinciding with an installation of wall drawings by David Tremlett. Spring 2014 arrives with the work of Belgian artist Michel François in his most comprehensive UK exhibition to date, giving way in the summer to Ikon 1980s, a review of our programme from 1978 to In September we present the extraordinary sculptural work of Korean artist Lee Bul before the exhibition to celebrate Deutsche Bank s Artist of the Year 2013, Imran Qureshi. Ikon 50 culminates in early 2015 with an arresting video installation by Angolan artist Nástio Mosquito, foiled by the minimalist aesthetic of Norwegian artist A.K. Dolven, and a Tower Room tribute to Robert Groves, the artist who gave Ikon its name in Ikon 50 also includes an extensive public programme of talks, events, film screenings and off-site projects, commencing with Midwest to Midville on Monday 3 February Presented in collaboration with Turning Point West Midlands, this free symposium considers the future of visual arts in the Midlands whilst looking back at the last 50 years.
