5 art ART EXHIBITION 26th August 8th September Sakshi Gallery Tanna House, 11- A, Nathalal Parekh Marg Colaba, Mumbai MADE IN ITALY Antonella Aprile Azelio Corni Giovanni Frangi Curator: Caterina Corni 5 Antonella Aprile, received the Premio Arti Visive in Milan for Best Artist (young talent) in Her work was selected by the Lombardy Region to represent Italy at the Biennial of young artists of Europe and Mediterranean. Azelio Corni was the first artist to participate at the event Festa Italiana in Mumbai. He has participated in many personal and collective art exhibitions around the world. Giovanni Frangi is amongst the most acclaimed artists of the Italian contemporary art panorama. He has many important personal exhibitions the world over. Event organized by Sakshi Gallery in collaboration with Istituto Italiano di Cultura and with the patronage of Consulate General of Italy.

6 1CHARLES DICKENS: PICTURES FROM ITALY Art by Livia Signorini Pictures from Italy is one of Charles Dickens earlier works, a fantastic and whimsical foray into the twin worlds of travel and imagination. Inspired by his words, Italian artist Livia Signorini plays with Dickens sense of place, memory and politics. The result is a brilliant contemporary dialogue with his work a reading of history, time and change which renews our sense of his enduring vision. Pictures from Italy is a tribute to the world of the great master in the 200th year of his birth. 7 cinema Photo by Luigi Ghirri FILMCLUB THEME: LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA In cinema the word landscape does not signify just the relationship between actors and space, between a person and the world but creates an entire range of association amongst different levels of vision: there is the observer who is the actor in the film and then there is the camera that observes the observer. Landscape in a film hence becomes a starting point for reflecting about the film and the act of watching becomes the cognitive factor. Beyond the observer and the camera lies another gaze, in ambush, in the shadows: that of the spectator, who organizes and constructs 5his rapport with the film according to the ever diverse cultural codes and models within the available space and time. To reflect on landscape therefore means to reckon with three visual experiences: the gaze of the actors in the film, the gaze of the film and the gaze on the film, that of the audience. Italian cinema in the second half of the 20th Century has been a cinema of magnificent landscapes. In these films the landscape element sometimes donned the mantle of a real actor, a negotiator and many times a ruthless adversary to the mainstream actors. The rapport between actor and landscape has often raised a debate about our culture, almost always knowingly, about the entire system of codes inside which each one lives and without which none would ever have an identity.

8 5LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA (Set in Turin) A/R ANDATA E RITORNO Round Trip 2004, 110 min Director: Marco Ponti Cast: Kabir Bedi, Libero Di Rienzo, Vanessa Incontrada Dante Cruciani, 25, a resident of Turin, is a bike messenger hard up for cash who decides to borrow some money from a loan shark named Skorpio. Unable to pay it back, he flees to Barcelona. Nina, a flight attendant with a Spanish airline, gets stuck in Turin when the city is shut down by a general strike. After a short stint in prison, Dante returns to his apartment only to find Nina put up there by Dante s best friend Tolstoj due to overcrowding at the hotels. 9 science 10th - 28th September Bangalore and Goa SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ROADSHOW Awareness Raising and Information Campaign in India on the Possibilities of Research & Innovation Cooperation with Europe Screening of ITALIA DEL FUTURO (Italy of the Future), a film by Alberto Angela, which is a fascinating and touching journey that runs through the history of Italy, her successes and future prospects, from research to technology of the recent past, from health to art, with a little robot icub as its protagonist, born in the Italian Centre for Technology in Genoa. In order to raise awareness 10 in India and the neighbouring countries regarding the possibilities of research and innovation cooperation with Europe, the EU Countries have launched an information campaign across the subcontinent, enriching this road show with collateral cultural events. The flow chart of all the events will be available on the website of the Delegation of the European Union to India closer to the dates of the event. 10 2 LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA (Set in the suburbs of Milan) FAME CHIMICA Chemical Hunger 2004, 97 min. Directors: Paolo Vari and Antonio Bocola Cast: Mimmo Allanprese, Joel Bossi and Andrea Canesi In the southern suburbs of Milan, two friends Claudio and Manuel, who keep meeting each other in the square where they grew up, bring forth two different life-styles: the first has a regular and underpaid job, while the second lives as a drug-pusher. In the backdrop of social and racial tensions that bring to light all kinds of violence, the two friends would eventually face their feelings about a girl who breaks into their lives. The two directors narrate a peripheral microcosm where the residents, donning the mask of aspirations to preserve and improve relationships, reveal their own discomforts and prejudices for immigrants. 12th September, 6:30 p.m. 15th September, 2:00 p.m. cinema

11 art 18th 30th September Exhibition Hall THE PROCESS OF UNKNOWING by Simona Bocchi Simona Bocchi is an internationally acclaimed Italian artist from Monza. Her sculptures, monumental works and paintings are collected around the world and exhibited in public spaces, museums and private collections. We asked Simona Bocchi to describe her approach to the creative process. She replied Unlike the state of not knowing, unknowing is my intuitive and ever-changing creative state of wonder and discovery. While in my unknowing state the finished work of art takes shape through the 18 interaction of materials and space. The final form emerges from what in the beginning appears like an absence of form. The exhibited work is a fusion of this training and the creative impact of her 6 year long Indian journey as an Italian contemporary artist who is exposed on a daily basis to Indian culture and traditions. 12 19 LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA (Set in the Friuli region) LA RAGAZZA DEL LAGO The Girl by the Lake 2007, 97 min Director: Andrea Molaioli Cast: Valerio Golino, Fabrizio Gifuni, Omero Antonutti, Anna Bonaiuto An idyllic mountain town in the Italian dolomites is shocked by the murder of teenager Anna. Her body is found by the lake without any traces of physical violence. Inspector Sanzio is sent from the province s capital to take charge of this case, in which the victim is quite as mystifying as the cause of her death. Amongst the suspects he finds the village fool, Anna s boyfriend and even her own father, whose home videos display an interest in the girl that is more than paternal. Even the recently divorced neighbor, whose autistic child recently died in an extraordinary accident, arouses the detective s suspicion. Director: Valerio Mieli CAST: Isabella Ragonese, Michele Riondino, Glen Blackhall, Sergei Zhigunov 25 In the winter of 1999 a small ferry crosses the Venice lagoon. Camilla, a shy eighteen year old who has just arrived from her small town to study Russian literature at the University, spots a boy in the crowd carrying a suitcase. Silvestro is the same age as Camilla. When the ferry docks he decides to follow the girl in the narrow, foggy streets of an island in the lagoon. An adventure, destined to last ten years, begins, taking the two young people from student life in Venice to the unsettling frenetic pace of Moscow s theatres and enormous, trafficfilled streets. At various points they are enemies, at others friends, sometimes close and at other times distant. Each winter opens a window into the lives of these two people who never completely lose touch and discover together their difficult but glorious entry into adulthood.

On a trip home from Rome, where he studies literature and lives with his boyfriend, Tommaso decides to tell his parents the truth about himself. 16 3LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA (Set in Naples) BASTA UN NIENTE Before you know it 2006, 85 min. Director: Ivan Polidoro Cast: Gianfelice Imparato, Gianni Ferreri, Mimmo Esposito, Lorenza Indovina The film s setting provides a wonderful backdrop for this comedy and the director uses the scenery of Naples famous Gulf as a seductive setting on which Ivo, Rosario, and Peppe live their lives as if on vacation. Strolling in panama hats, Bermuda shorts and colourful shirts, almost oblivious to the stress that surrounds them, their professions as undertaker, mailman and cemetery guard provide a contradiction that set the comic/ironic ball rolling. To give their lives a creative dimension they perform music as a band in local clubs. Always on the lookout for escaping their patchwork existence and hopeful for events to spice up their lives, the three are given a golden opportunity when a local thief is killed during a jewel heist 10th October, 6:30 p.m. 13th October, 2:00 p.m. cinema

17 XII SETTIMANA DELLA LINGUA NEL MONDO ITALIA DEI TERRITORI, ITALIA DEL FUTURO XII Italian Language Week in the World 15th - 21st October 2012 ITALIA DEI TERRITORI, ITALIA DEL FUTURO Multiple Italian Landscapes and Italy of the Future The annual Italian language Week, now in its twelfth year, aims to create awareness about Italian language and culture in the world. Italian Language is steadily gaining ground in India amongst people of all ages, sometimes for its use at work, sometimes for higher studies and research and sometimes merely as a means to understand an ancient culture which has for times immemorial fascinated the world. Speaking Italian also means having access not only to an extremely valuable literary heritage, essential to the history of Europe and to extremely precious humanistic and scientific texts, but also to Italian design, art, architecture, theatre, music, opera, cinema and television. Italian is hence a language of culture. 20 Detailed programme will be announced separately Every year a number of students decide to attend our schools, universities, academies and libraries. Italian is thus a language of study. Managers, investors, technicians, artisans and workers get in touch with Italy s world of industry, craft and services, which crosses the borders of our country. Italian is therefore a language of work. Speaking Italian will turn a visit to our country and its friendly and hospitable people, its artistic cities and its beautiful nature into a real pleasure. The Year 2012 celebrates the beauty of Italian Regions and landscapes and creates awareness about Italy of the Future.

18 15 LUIGI PIO TESSITORI - AN ITALIAN LIFE DEVOTED TO INDIA Talk by Prof. Furio Honsell Mayor of Udine, Ex-Vice Chancellor of the University of Udine Luigi Pio Tessitori, a great Indologist and Linguist was born in Udine, a city in north eastern Italy, on 13th December 1887 and died, at the age of 32, in Bikaner city of the present day state of Rajasthan in India. Tessitori identified, for the first time, the prehistoric and pre-mauryan nature of the Indus Valley Civilization of South Asia. The Società Indologica «Luigi Pio Tessitori» was constituted at Udine with the aim of promoting scientific research in the field of Indological studies in collaboration with institutions both in Italy and abroad. 19 exhibition 15th - 31st October Exhibition Hall Photo Exhibition TINA MODOTTI: Between Art and Revolution Italy - Mexico - India Tina Modotti (Udine, Italy, Mexico, 1942) one of the rarest, most fragile and at the same time strong personalities of early modern photography and Pandurang Khankhoje, a noted agronomist, hero among the brave Indian 15 freedom fighters of the early XX Century, who played a decisive role in the creation and direction of the famous Ghadar Party - Party of the Revolutionaries - met in Mexico in the very first years after the Mexican Revolution. This exhibition of 60 photographs by Tina Modotti and memorabilia of Pandurang Khankhoje is a breathtaking example of her art, a testimony to their friendship, those experiences and inspiring times. While 30 of these photographs will be on display worldwide for the very first time, the 30 remaining photographs have been developed from the negatives of Tina Modotti s photographs in Mexico especially for this occasion. 20 7 documentary Exhibition The testimony of one eye-witness is worth more than ten hear-says Ludovico De Varthema VOYAGE TO INDIA By Ludovico De Varthema ( ) The place was Rome and the year 1510 when the first book ever on India was published by a European. The Bolognese author Ludovico De Varthema, left Venice in 1502, travelled extensively to the east of the Mediterranean Sea and reached the Indian peninsula, where he stayed for a long time. He chronicled his journeys in the volume first published in The exhibition contains a large number of contemporary cartographic images and dwells on other curious and fascinating aspects related to plants, animals and trade in the great Asian peninsula. INNER SPACE by Patrizia Maïmouna Guerresi 18 For over twenty years Patrizia Maïmouna Guerresi s uniquely authentic work has been about empowering women and bringing together individuals and cultures in an appreciation for a context of shared humanity, beyond borders psychological, cultural, and political. Her work is inspired by personal experience and cultural contexts highlighting the female condition fixed within her own tradition and isolated from and by it in the contemporary world. Through photographs and videos of silent, austere, veiled women, her work functions as both metaphor and provocation. 22 7 AlTempAlPassa A collection of songs by Marco Zappa By the Duo Marco Zappa and Renate Zappa Marco Zappa is one of the most prolific songwriters of Swiss contemporary scene. He has to his credit more than thirty recorded works and has enthralled audiences with concerts at the most important Swiss Festivals as well as at international festivals in Chicago, Berlin, South Africa, Finland, winning several awards. This collection of his songs features the lifestyles prevalent in different Italian speaking territories as Ticino, Liguria, Lombardia and depicts their similarities. Each song is sung either in Italian or in a dialect and explained in English. In addition to his guitar, Marco Zappa uses traditional acoustic instruments that belong to the music tradition of these regions. 23 book launch 20th October BOOK LAUNCH BUONGIORNO ITALIA A complete course for learning Italian as a Foreign Language By Carlo Buldrini and Federica Oddera Lanfranchi Cover design by Susetta Bozzi Langers, an imprint of Saraswati House, New Delhi, 2012, pp The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is proud to announce that for the very 18 first time a complete course for learning Italian as a foreign language will be available off the shelf in the Indian market. The authors, Carlo Buldrini, renowned writer, journalist, former Acting Director of this Institute and Federica Oddera Lanfranchi, writer and translator for top Italian publishers, have taught Italian for a long period of time in India and have a very deep understanding of the subject. The book commences with the rudimentary and goes right up to the most advanced and complex forms in the language, simplifying them for a foreign student like never before. 24 5 PROJECT KINOTEKAS Promotion of Italian cinema amongst the youth BENVENUTI AL NORD Welcome to the North 2012, 110 min Director: Luca Miniero Cast: Claudio Bisio, Alessandro Siani and Angela Finocchiaro Many parts of India remain devoid of quality cinema from Europe. The European Film Festival and other Film Festivals where European films are screened cover audiences from the cities that these Festivals are presented in but they remain mostly out of the reach of a large section of Society. Hence, the European Union Delegation has decided to launch the Kinotekas Project, in the ambit of which a package of films from EU countries will travel to different Universities throughout the year organising a Week of EU Films for Indian students across the country, using the existing film clubs in partner universities and their extended networks. The Universities in Delhi - JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and Delhi University - will be the first destination, followed by those of Agra, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bhopal Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kolkata, Shillong, Guwahati and Chandigarh. The film will also be screened subsequently in all Indian Universities where Italian language is taught, as part of the XII Italian Language Week celebrations. While her lover and her best friend search 17 for her across Italy, they begin an affair. Antonioni s penetrating study of the idle upper class offers stinging observations on spiritual isolation and the many meanings of love.

26 24 The 14th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival, organized by the Mumbai CELEBRATION OF ITALIAN CINEMA AT MUMBAI FILM FESTIVAL Academy of Moving Images, will pay tribute to Italian cinema under the banner Celebration of Italian Cinema which will include films from major directors and restored films like Inferno (1911) and Maciste (1915). The selection of Italian films has been possible due to the efforts of film maker Italo Spinelli. 27 cinema 24th October, 6:30 p.m. 27th October, 2:00 p.m. LANDSCAPES IN ITALIAN CINEMA (Set in sardinia) BALLO A TRE PASSI Three Step Dancing 2003, 106 min Director: Salvatore 24 Mereu Cast: Yael Abecassis, Michele Carboni, Caroline Ducey, Daniele Casula Four tales of life in a rural Sardinian village, each with its own color palette and an age-appropriate hero or heroine, is the canvas on which Salvatore Mereu paints a batch of cinematic portraits in these character-driven short stories each connected to one of the four seasons. For the Spring, he tells the story of a boy s fancy and his love for the sea he s never seen. Summer introduces the shepherd whose sheep appeared in the previous tale. Autumn follows the returning of Sister Francesca from her convent to the village of her birth for her sister s wedding. The final Winter s tale concerns Giorgio, an old man from the wedding who lives alone in a city, far away from the village.

30 cils CILS - CERTIFICATION OF ITALIAN AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE (UNIVERSITY OF SIENA) IN DELHI The Istituto Italiano di Cultura, New Delhi, is a recognised seat for taking CILS exams of the University of Siena. The 6 levels offered are equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ranging from A 1 (beginner) to C 2 (bilingual speaker). The Certification CILS is recognised by Italian Universities, so those who wish to pursue higher studies in an Italian University can obtain the minimum level requested in Italy, B 2 (= CILS 2), by simply taking the exam in Delhi and will not need to pass further exams of Italian Language.
