Material Issues Volume 6, Issue 2 Plano, Texas Chapter July, August, September Dear Sewing Friends, Happy Summer! Summer is a wonderful time of year, sunshine and heat, such a great reason to stay inside and sew something wonderful. Sewing is a great creative outlet and a stress reliever. Sewing would be the most serene activity if we could just get over our stash building mission and what do I want to make next woes. Summer means it is once again time to think about the elections for the Chapter Advisory Board. A list of the job descriptions for the CAB can be found in this newsletter. If you are interested in running for an office please notify Beverly Vespa, Chairman of the Nominating Committee at avespa65@tx.rr.com by September 1 st, If a CAB position is more than you want to take on why not volunteer to help Becky Bieri with the Annual Luncheon or the Nancy Nix Rice Program Sept. 19 th? Also you might think about presenting a program to the chapter or your Neighborhood Group. It takes many people to make our Chapter a success and we need everyone s help to keep our chapter growing and healthy. The Chapter is what we make it. We do have some exciting things happening within our chapter, two new Neighborhood Groups are forming. The first is a needle felting group with Joyce Jackson as the leader and the second is an evening garment sewing group with Mary Anderson as the leader. Also in this newsletter is a registration form for the Nancy Nix Rice program September 19 th. It should be a wonderful opportunity to learn about what types of garments work best for your body type no matter what your size or age. The program should help take the question out of will this pattern work for me? Hope you have a wonderful productive summer, Jami Help Wanted Historian The Plano Chapter of ASG needs someone to record our history. This is a great opportunity to find out what is going on with the Chapter by going to functions and taking photos and recording what you see. The job involves keeping the Chapter Scrapbook, and bringing it to Chapter events to share with the members. This job has been done beautifully for many years by Donna Simpson, and we need someone new to take over the reins. If you are interested please contact Jami Roux at jami@glr3.com.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS The ASG Plano Chapter welcomes the following new members: Linda Brown (Feb 25) Tywii Antao (April 9) Glenda Lyon (Feb 26) Lisa Starne (April 22) Nancy Lovell (April 9) Michelle Sauerbrei (April 28) Maria Jane Bararena (June 1) Trisha Kemp Meet Our Members My mother s treadle sewing machine fascinated me, as I watched her make clothes for herself and for me. I must have been about 5 or 6 when she finally allowed me to run numerous pieces of fabric through that machine. I learned how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin. I wasn t really making anything, but I was sewing, often putting various shaped pieces together. My first garment making was a result of junior high school requirements. After that first skirt, I was hooked. Being young and never considering that anything could be difficult, I tackled any pattern that caught my eye. After all, I could read directions and I could always ask Mom. Imagine my dismay when a school employee would not believe I had made my cotton dress with its tucked bodice. I continued to make my clothes, but didn t take a class again until my senior year in high school. That year, I made my prom gown and my clothes for all graduation events. I even made the hat and gloves that were part of my senior luncheon ensemble.

After marrying, I directed some of my sewing energy to tailoring men s jackets. I took an old, beautifully tailored jacket apart and used it as a learning tool. Through all those years of sewing, I knew little about fitting a pattern, many times correcting after the garment was completed. I was in my late thirties when I finally took classes in fitting and pattern making. This helped immensely, but I still continue to pursue better fit. I have availed myself of numerous educational opportunities ever since, always developing new skills. Private lessons with professional dressmakers have been especially valuable. Bridal gowns, wearable art jackets, handbags and machine embroidery have all been enjoyed along the way. After taking early retirement from the commercial insurance industry, I studied the teaching of sewing and became a freelance teacher for a local Viking Sewing Machine Gallery. I also taught children s classes in my home. My most recent venture has been that of sharing my knowledge and experience in the making of Chanel jackets with the Couture Neighborhood Group of the Plano ASG chapter. This has been a delightful activity that will culminate in a fashion show when all are completed. Sewing has often competed with my music hobbies and family life, but much of my greatest joy is in seeing an idea developed into a garment in my sewing room. Beverly Vespa I've been sewing since high school in Lincoln Illinois, back in the days when they offered sewing and cooking classes. My mother had sewn, but her idea of pattern making was to lay some newspaper down and cut out a dress pattern. She never liked anything to fit tight so this worked for her. We got transferred here from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We said we would go for a year. It's been a long year. That was I taught second grade in Illinois and Iowa and have had various part-time jobs since moving here. One was at FutureKids, which involved carrying three computers and monitors to daycare or preschools. This was before everybody had a computer in their home and it was used to introduce the computer and also used for reading readiness and math skills. I am not very computer literate but it was enough for 3 and 4 year olds and I could use my teaching skills for young learners. In recent years, like many others, I have been on the search for a good fit. I tried Dress Shop for several years and was involved in the user group that started in homes and later met in the mid-cities. This is how I became acquainted with Terry, Caroline and others in this group. I am now trying My Label. In doing all this experimenting with patterns, I realized that I was not actually finishing things to wear. I'm doing better about getting to the "stash". Through the ASG I hope to meet other people with similar interests and learn new things. Editor's note: Beverly is an excellent seamstress and is always willing to share her expertise.

Meet Our Vendor Bernina Sewing Centers Bernina Sewing Center of Plano Bernina Sewing Center of Dallas 2400 K Avenue #C Midway Road, #410 Plano, Texas, (972) Dallas, Texas (972) Jacque Wenzel, owner of both stores, writes: I started sewing when I was 11 or 12 in 7th grade, but I'm sure I came out of the womb visualizing a 5/8" seam allowance. My mother did not sew, but both grandmothers and an aunt did. I loved to visit them in the summer to watch them at the machine. In college, I majored in home economics my freshman year. Then I switched to a business major. At the time, I really wanted to create my own major that combined home economics and business. In those prehistoric days and at my little school that type of thing was not done. I don't remember a desire to have my own business, but it must have been somewhere in the recesses of my mind. I was in my late twenties when I started dreaming about having my own shop and teaching classes seemed like a place to begin. I was advised to seek out a lady named Teri DeBolt who taught sewing classes in Dallas. I thought maybe she could advise me about starting classes. Indeed she did! I taught classes for a while in a small, multi-brand machine shop. After that I taught and worked at a Stretch & Sew where I served as assistant manager. Somewhere in there I learned about Bernina machines and I was hooked. I began working for the only Bernina dealer in Dallas in the late 1970s. In 1983 I opened the Plano store. It was in the same shopping center where we are located now. That first shop was 12' wide and 45' deep. We still have customers from that time and we reminisce about that small space. I taught classes in a tiny 12'x12' space in the back. The Plano store was having a couple of classes the day our photographer went by to take pictures. See the happy faces of our new sewing generation on the next page!

Isn't it great to see our girls smiling in a sewing class They also have adult classes at the store The Dallas store also has classes in embroidery, quilting, and sewing. In 1993 I began planning to open the Dallas store and called my friend, Teri DeBolt, to ask her to join me as manager of the new location. Many of you may know that Teri is now the Education Director for both stores, a position she to agreed to take about 6 years ago. Many others on the staff go back a long ways, but none as far back as Teri & I. classes. Each shop has always been like my own big sewing room. Everything I always wanted in my personal sewing room is available in the shop...with quality being the byword. I chose the website name, bestofbernina, because it has always been my goal to provide the best of Bernina through excellent customer service, quality products, and informative, creative, & fun Website for both stores is where you will find scheduled classes, clubs, and other information. Stop by one of these Bernina stores and say, "Hi!" from the Plano ASG Chapter. Oh, and don't forget they gives us an ASG discount on our purchases.

PROJECT REVIEW Marty Anderson submitted this book review thinking that it might be a helpful resource for members who sew garments and are always look for an easier way to achieve their preferred fit. Book Review for Fit for Real People. Many of you may already have a copy of Fit for Real People in your library. It was published in 1998 by Palmer/Pletsch and is written by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto. I know I have owned this for quite a while but had never really spent much time reading it. It first caught my eye when I was helping Becky Bieri prepare for last month's chapter meeting on making a Croquis. It describes making a body graph to determine what type of body shape you are. Well, I read that part and just kept reading. I know that with my own fitting journey, I know when something doesn t fit. I just don t know where to begin in figuring out how to correct the situation. This book is all about reading the wrinkles and interpreting them. It then goes into detailed instruction (with illustrations) on how to make the wrinkles go away. It covers a myriad of problems on the back, neck & chest, bust, darts, shoulders & armholes, sleeves, waist, hips, tummy and thighs. On the shoulders alone, it addresses square shoulders, sloping shoulders, uneven shoulders, broad shoulders, narrow shoulders, and forward sloping shoulders. It carries you through the process of seeing the wrinkles on your round body to making the adjustments on a flat pattern. As promised, it uses all kinds of real people as examples to observe how they were able to achieve a better fit. I believe that no matter what method you use to alter a pattern and achieve great fit, this book is a wealth of information. It is a great resource to add to your reference library! I took mine and had it spiral bound! Jane Johnson recommends a Project Runway Pattern: One of Simplicity s Project Runway styles intrigued me when I went looking for a summer top style. I purchased #2927 and began the vetting process. The design called for a woven fabric such as poplin, twill, linen etc. But I thought I would like to try a cotton knit (interlock) which would be more casual and perhaps cooler for the season. The first page of instructions encourages you to sketch and stitch from concepts to design to reality and provides a croquis to work with a sketch pad. I however simply moved to straight to the cutting layout and sewing instructions. The pattern called for a back zipper but since I was using a knit I eliminated that step but retained the back seam. I used a contrast fabric for the neck band (although it was a touch heavier than I would have preferred) and placed a bound buttonhole on center front so the top could be unbuttoned and slipped on and off. Although it is an extremely comfortable knit top for a plus figure I am not sure using a woven fabric would look as nice after a few hours on the body. It was fun to make. Please submit your pattern/project review for the newsletter to Terry terrysews701@att.net

Review of New Look Pattern #6429 from Debbi Ramsayer. In a last desperate move to find a costume for a ballroom dance showcase, I decided to make it myself. I dug through my pattern stash and found New Look It s a princess seamed flared dress with a crossover front and gathered on one side. There are options for sleeveless, short- or long-sleeved and with or without a collar. I haven t sewn for myself in several years due to some unresolved fitting issues (two of them, specifically). I really didn t know where to start with this dress, which is sized for stretch-knits only. I found a print knit fabric in the stash to use for a test garment, and decided to cut out a size 18 in view C, without making any adjustments. To my surprise, the fit was nearly perfect! The v-neck of the dress is cut pretty low, so for my costume, I raised the neckline so I didn t need to wear a tank underneath. I also added some extra flare to the skirt. Although the dress is rated Easy, I had some difficulty following the instructions for the front construction. After finally figuring out what Simplicity really meant to say, I made personal notes on the pattern instructions about attaching both the left and right fronts to the opposite sides. I found the marking all of the dots and the gathered area was very important because there are no other reference points on the pattern for the left front placement. Also, the bodice comes to a point in the back and it is crucial that the inset be marked and sewn correctly. By folding over and stitching the front and neck seam allowances before sewing the shoulder seams, I was able to eliminate the facings, which seemed unnecessary on a knit dress. The neckline could also be bound with a contrasting fabric. The final dress was made of a red jersey knit with shiny silver polka dots. It was absolutely perfect for my East Coast Swing routine. After the showcase, I went back and finished the details on the test garment. Now I have two flattering dresses using the same pattern. This dress is a great basic wardrobe piece. It can be dressy or casual, depending on the fabric. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this pattern. Fun links to try Kathy Miller sent in this link. Be sure to check out the sewing tutorials. I found the "perfect hem" and the elastic waist insertion technique to be of interest and will be trying them out on my next shirt and pants. Quite by accident, I discovered this fantastic website on how to draft your own swimsuit or leotard patterns. Chock full of great information complete with "lazy person" instructions where the system will draft a pattern based on your measurements. And it's all FREE! The only "downside" is that all measurements are in cm. Submitted by Debbie Ramsayer One of my favorite links is now offering downloadable patterns for less than the printed patterns they have to mail. Take a look. Submitted by Terry Jerden One of our members, Joyce Jackson, has asked that this notice be put in our newsletter with regard to community service. Shepherds Pasture supports military families in need. They provide transitional housing FREE and counseling and more for our military guys. They need quilts for all size beds.
