3 A recent study by the Diabetes Discovery Platform and the Infruitec- Nietvoorbij Institute has found promising capabilities of the Rooibos os plant to lower blood sugar levels which is good news for all Diabetics. team of South African researchers released results in October 2012 of a Diabetes study showing the beneficial effect of Rooibos on blood sugar levels. The study found that an Aspalathinenriched extract of Green Rooibos is able to lower raised glucose levels in the blood. According to the South African Rooibos Council, when Aspalathin (Aspalathus Linearis), an antioxidant found only in the Rooibos plant is combined with Rutin, another key ingredient in Rooibos Tea, the two ingredients together, succeed in lowering the blood glucose level monitored over a six hour period. This could have the same effect as drugs that are currently available on the market to counter Diabetes. The study was conducted by the Diabetes Discovery Platform from South Africa s Medical Research Council (MRC) and the South African Agricultural Research Council s (ARC) Infruitec-Nietvoorbij Institute. It was carried out with extracts of Green Rooibos prepared by Prof Lizette Joubert of the ARC, analysed by the MRC and the results were published in the online version of the Phytomedicine Journal. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Diabetes will affect 439 million people around the world by Currently 6.5 million South Africans have Diabetes, although experts feel that number may be under-reported. The disease develops when the body does not produce enough insulin, a hormone that enables cells to absorb glucose from the blood and convert it into energy. Dr Johan Louw, of the MRC and team leader of the study, says their team of researchers are the first in the world to discover this effect with Rooibos extract and their work confirms the constituents present in Rooibos could prove beneficial in the fight against Diabetes. Rooibos has many compounds with different effects at different concentrations. On its own Rutin has no effect while Aspalathin has a slight effect, but when they are combined the results are remarkable. We believe Rooibos can provide a basis to develop a standardised anti-diabetic product. In a country like South Africa. Where a large section of the population relies on herbal medicines, such a product could be of huge value, he says. Our focus as scientists is the promotion of healthy lifestyles and a healthier population, not just in South Africa but all over the world, so don t hesitate to drink that cup of Rooibos as part of a good diet, he says. Prof Joubert of ARC says their Rooibos research to date, focused mostly on the antioxidant activity of Rooibos, but this evidence of its ability to lower blood glucose levels opens up new and exciting possibilities for this unique South African herb. We now need to dig deeper to determine the optimal combination and ratio of the active compounds such as Aspalathin and Rutin in controlling blood glucose levels, and also understand the exact mechanisms involved, she says. 3

4 for treating using Cornè Wiid, a consultant from Kimberley, suffered with problem skin until her early 20s when she discovered the solution in the Annique product range. Cornè shares her secrets with us on how best to treat acne, using Annique. One of the biggest mistakes teenagers make when trying to make acne breakouts disappear, is to dry the skin out and remove all natural oils by using soaps, scrubs and masques; according to Cornè Wiid, one of Annique s Top 50 consultants from Kimberley. Teenagers often feel moisturiser worsens the problem and I actually used this routine of drying out my skin, before I started using Annique at the age of 20. When explaining problem skin to clients, Cornè says she divides the skin into six different categories. 6 CONSULTANT PROFILE Now that her three children are all grown up, Marida Pretorius, a leading consultant from Kyalami, is excited to focus even more time and energy on growing her successful Annique business. Marida Pretorius, a 46 year old top 50 consultant from Kyalami, followed in her mother s footsteps building her Annique business while raising her children. She is now more excited than ever about investing more energy into her business since her children are grown up and able to support themselves. She has been selling Annique products part-time since the age of 19, during her university years and while teaching at two nursery schools for 11 years, until she decided to work full time on her business, when her youngest son began grade one. This consultant has a passion for young children, enjoys reading, watching movies, creating arts and crafts, going for walks and beautifying her house and garden. A traditional start to Annique When Marida was 14 years old her mother, Dalena Stulting, began selling Annique products after attending a demonstration party where Dr Annique Theron was demonstrating the products. Dr Theron invited my mother, who was a stay-at-home mom, to become a consultant and from that moment on my mom became passionate about Marida and her mother Dalena Stulting taking part in selling Annique products. When the festivities of the overseas trip to Greece in I was 19 years old, studying a B-Primary Education Degree at Rand Afrikaans University, I began working as a consultant part time, she says. After completing her degree, Marida went on to work for a nursery school in Newlands for five years and after this began running a nursery school in Bryanston, while continuing to sell Annique products part time. After studying Beauty Therapy at Madge Wallace International College of Skincare and Body Therapy in Parktown North, when my youngest son began grade one, I decided to work full time to grow my Annique business. My husband built a salon onto his offices in Midrand where I currently run my business from, working mainly in the Kyalami, Fourways and Sandton areas, she says. 7 Wonderful perks of being a consultant perks Marida says the benefit of being an Annique consultant is that she enjoys working flexible hours for a company that cares about their consultants and clients. She says it is wonderful to be able to pay her own salary and make a difference in other people s lives. Annique is a winning product so it s a win-win situation. It is amazing to see the positive difference Annique makes in the lives of consultants and clients. Through Annique I have become more organised, can manage my own finances and have done a great deal of research on people s social habits, she says. Marida says through the Presentation Skills Course, which she attended in December 2011, she is also now more self-assured and able to talk more confidently in front of people. In the beginning I found it difficult to speak English, but because 80% of my consultants are English, I had to learn to speak the language more confidently to grow my business, she says. Together we have three sons and welcomed a daughter-in-law into the family in March 2012 when Helgard, our eldest son got married. Helgard, who is 24 years old, completed his final year as a Theology student at Stellenbosch University in 2012 and began working at the NG Moedergemeente, Stellenbosch this year, she says. Erin, their daughter-in-law who is 23 years old, works as junior lecturer at Stellenboch and is busy with her Doctorate degree in Translation. Their second son, Hugo, who is 22 years old, is a student in Sport Science and Biokinetics at Stellenbosch University. Altus, their youngest son, is 20 years old and is the musician in the family, studying teaching at Potchefstroom University. MARIDA S MARVELOUS TIPS FOR CONSULTANTS Everyone is important in your team, but it may not be their season or they may have a problem as to why they can t focus on their business. As Ernest says, 10% of your downline are stars and 60% have the ability to be successful but it may not be their time. As a leader you need to know where your consultants are and be there for them contacting them regularly and helping those who want to grow. Build leaders in your first level of consultants from the outset, so that you can avoid having to do everything yourself and can create balance in your life. Be there for your consultants and help build your leaders downlines. They must know they can depend on you and that you will help them. Hold team meetings at least once a week and if you can t attend your consultants meetings, follow up with them. Invest a great deal into your consultants and emphasise the overseas trips as this becomes a point of great motivation for them. I have also been on the trips to Europe in 1998 and Australia in 2002 and am now aiming for Vietnam, says Marida. She says her mother has always been a role model for her giving her guidance through example. My mother treats both young and old in the same way and is my pillar of strength. I am so thankful for what I have learned from her about planning my business and organising functions, says Marida. aspirations Fabulous future aspirations Marida says the thing which drives her success now is that for many years, her life was solely focussed on her children, however now she can focus on her business as she no longer needs to support her children. In the next five years I want to continue building strong leaders and expand my first downline. I am thankful to my downline for their hard work, wonderful personalities, working as a team and being willing to walk the extra mile with me, she says. Marida says she is also grateful to her husband, who has a great deal of business knowledge and supports her through everything. I enjoy being financially independent and not having to rely on my husband for money I believe every woman should be financially independent and I enjoy making a difference in people s lives, she says. Marida adds that is wonderful to work for a company where Ernest and Angelique, the owners, do so much for their employees, consultants and clients. She says everyone is important to them, no matter what kind of sales they are doing for the business. It s not about sales and money for Ernest and Angelique, but rather about the person. It is a privilege to be part of Annique, as the company puts a great deal into their consultants to better themselves, she says. 7

8 Club Annique Gauteng a major success Loads of fun was had by all guests who attended the Gauteng Annique Team Meeting. Some of the highlights of the event included consultants experiencing the exciting launch of the Hydrafine range and being able to support Pippie Kruger, the three year old burn victim from Limpopo. Ernest and Angelique du Toit, owners of Annique, with their daughter Claire, Dr Annique Theron, founder of Annique, and Lynn van Niekerk, consultant from Krugersdorp, ready for a fun-filled day. he Gauteng Annique Team Meeting was a phenomenal success last year, with more than 460 consultants attending the event with the fun, holiday theme of Club Annique, at Union Caterers in Pretoria on 27 October Douwlene Hermon, events manager at Annique, says approximately R in raffle money was raised through both the Gauteng and Cape Town functions in support of Pippie Kruger, the three year old burn victim from Limpopo. Pippie suffered third degree burns over her body on New Year s Day 2012 when a firelighter exploded in her father s hand. The Gauteng function in the Club Annique theme proved to be a wonderful success among guests this year, with one of the major highlights being the launch of the new Hydrafine range. Guests were welcomed to the sounds of a soothing Marimba band and there was loads of excitement throughout the day. Consultants experienced a luxurious Pamper Party where they could indulge in Hydrafine products during the day. Life-changing testimonials were also shared by the consultants, who learnt new secrets on network building, product training and received some amazing special offers and prizes. We are so happy to have had such an entertaining day with our consultants. 9 Star consultants take top honours at Gauteng ATM Winning Annique consultants excitedly took to the stage to receive some amazing awards at the Gauteng Annique Team Meeting (ATM) held at Union Caterers in Pretoria on 27 October Some of the fantastic titles awarded on the day included the Motivator Award, Newcomer Award, Trailblazer Award, Personal Sales Award, Business Builder Award, Group Leader Award and Group Sales Award. The consultants were awarded for the period 1 July 2012 until 30 September Here are our leading consultants who managed to capture these prestigious awards this year: Motivator of the Year Award Prize: Woolworths Gift Voucher valued at R1 000 Winners: Newcomer Award Winner: Kabelo Segopolo from Witsieshoek, Free State Prize: Annique Voucher valued at R3000 Joined in July 2012 Sales: R Average per month: R Lebohang Ramone of Maseru, Lesotho Lebohang touched so many hearts with his story. He joined the company earlier this year, to work alongside his wife, Mathato. Their goal was to work hard during the Passport to Paradise competition so they both could qualify for the incentive trip. After the tragic death of Mathato, he did not stop working. He decided to honour her memory by working hard to build the network and share the life-changing opportunity with everyone. Schenell Rossouw of Rooihuiskraal, Gauteng Schenell joined Annique in April After reading the Replique on holiday, she realised Annique can take her to new heights. She started building her team and began training and investing energy in them. Despite her husband being diagnosed with an incurable disease and experiencing heartache concerning the disease, she managed to motivate and encourage her team to do the best they can. Schenell believes rewards and recognition play a big part in growing a network. Shirley Anspach of Centurion, Gauteng Shirley is changing lives one shake at a time. She recently left her job to pursue her Annique business full time. One of Shirley s clients was very worried about her mom, who was in hospital and could not hold any food down. Shirley suggested this client give her mom the Vanilla Rooibos Lifestyle Shake. 13 Celeste scoops award for Senior Citizen of 2012 It was smiles all around as Celeste van der Walt, a 73 year old Annique consultant, took top honours winning the award for Senior Citizen of the Year 2012, by the Golden Oldies Fundraising Club, Eastern Cape and the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged on 1 October To be the best senior citizen is not so much about your achievements, as it is about your contribution to the community that matters. I think it encourages seniors to keep on contributing and making a difference throughout life. I was surprised, thrilled and excited to have won the award, she says. Celeste was nominated for the award by one of her consultants and won in the business category for her achievements over the last 10 years. In 2012 alone, she was awarded as the number 7 top achiever at Annique, qualifying for the overseas trip to Turkey in May by growing her business 20% during March 2011 to February 2012, reaching the R15 million mark. AN EVOLVING SOCIETY Currently Vietnam is a combination of two different worlds ancient and modern integrated into one society. Vietnamese society, its social structure and behaviour of people continues evolving with progressive economic development and outside influences. Young people are more independent from their parents compared to decades ago. New business opportunities and self-made success are more appealing to young people in Vietnam than several decades ago. DISTINCTIVE NAMES A Vietnamese name has a special meaning, distinct from other cultures and is often poetic and inspiring. The name consists of three parts, a first name, middle name and family name. An example is the name of Lin Dan Pham, a Vietnamese actress. Pham is her first name, Dan is her middle name, and Lin is her family name. It is common for a person to be called by one name, with a special meaning in the close family circle, but to use another name outside the family. Family names of the Vietnamese are more universal, yet have an ancient story, explaining the origins. BEST WAY TO ADDRESS VIETNAMESE To learn how to address a Vietnamese person with respect, appropriate in a cultural perspective, you must understand the way Vietnamese people do it. The first name is used to address people in most situations, even formal ones, with the exception of very formal occasions, where the full name is used. Addressing a Vietnamese person by a family name or middle name is not appropriate. Introduce yourself in Vietnam using your first name and in a formal situation, use your title. People in Vietnam may often refer to you using the Ms title and your first name. THE FUTURE OF VIETNAM Vietnam is an ancient country historically, but has a predominantly young population. The younger generation did not go through the hardships of previous generations and are growing up in an environment with new opportunities, lifestyles, values and priorities. They are determined to build a modern image of their country and help Vietnam get into leading positions, politically and economically. Despite all the changes, the new generation is still connected with the previous generations and are aware of their rich heritage.
