The shank is threaded to screw into the wooden ejector, which fitted inside the stem of the candlestick. The stem was slotted to allow vertical movement of the handle and ejector. John Caspall in, Fire and Light in the home pre-1820 (Antique Collectors Club, 2000) explains that this trefoil shape is an early eighteenth century introduction. Can be mis-identified as suspension mounts, finials, or small strap distributors. Exact Correct Identity: 20 th C sickle blade tooth leather strap. The straight section is sewn into the line of the leather strap creating a tee piece. They have been identified in use as cheek straps (Ref Horsham Museum) and in breeching harness for attaching carts etc (see picture above noting the bulge in the leather) purpose of the design is unknown but it has been suggested they form part of a leash for pets. Nocturnals were used as an instrument to tell the time at night with the help of the stars. Circa Often mistaken for pocket sundials Correct Identity: The thin pressed examples are actually Victorian mounts. The example shown above is a corner mount from a Victorian gothic revival mirror. It has also been said that they are coffin mounts but this remains unsubstantiated. The thin pressed examples such as those illustrated above are sometimes misidentified as badges or bracteates associated with the Knights of the sepulchre. D-shaped, dished terminal with a short length of a pointed ovalsectioned arm - upper photos. Have also been identified as end grips from sugar nips or tongs - see lower photo. These are designed for cracking open crustaceans such as prawns and lobster claws. They are shown alongside a pick used to extract the flesh. Often found with the threaded part of the shaft missing and therefore those with less obvious designs on the face can easily be mistaken for mounts. Look for breaks or remnants at the narrow end where the shaft of the handle has separated from the knop. Finials and terminal ends.
