1 ADVANCED PAINTING ART 4505C [6cr] SPRING 2015 Location/Hours FAD 201, Mondays & Wednesdays 8:30-11:30, Fridays 8:30-2:45 Meeting Times w/instructor Mondays 8:30-11:30am and Fridays 9-12am Instructor Amy Freeman Office & Hours FAD 221, Mondays 11:30-12:30am or by appointment Graduate Assistant TBA COURSE DESCRIPTION This is an advanced course for art students in painting, second semester, and is designed to encourage independence, self-motivation and maturity in an open studio environment. This course builds on existing painting and art making skills and facilitates the student s pursuit and development of personal themes for his/her works and professional practice. The student will work toward relating conceptual ideas to their technical skills as well as explore a range of painting media to define content. It is expected that each student be self-motivated, attend all studio times plus spend a significant amount of time outside of the scheduled class times. The ultimate goal is to build a sound body of work that relates visually to their concept and can thus be exhibited in a final solo exhibition at the end of the semester. COURSE OBJECTIVES To develop and practice a strong studio work ethic and build community within the studio To develop a body of work which represents the culmination of undergraduate studies in the studio arts To pay considerable attention to the student s voice and development of a thematic body of work To take responsibility for the initiation, planning and execution of research To create a professional portfolio package (see below) To organize a final solo exhibition of student work COURSE METHODS & REQUIREMENTS STUDIO WORK & CRITIQUE: You will be creating a large portfolio of work that represents a total of 336 studio hours (24 hours per week for 14 weeks, 12 scheduled and 12 outside of class). Your paintings and research will be documented by approximately 9-12 completed pieces of work (depending on scale, time and process). You are expected to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and work continuously throughout each class meeting time. Research specific to your concept will be documented in your ideation book. There will be at least two formal critiques during the semester and you are expected to present new work at each critique. You will also present a new artist statement at each critique, which will reflect the work produced. A weekly studio log will be maintained to help ensure that you maintain the proper amount of outside studio time. CRITIQUE PARTICIPATION: Participation is expected at each and every critique session. There will be one critique at the onset of the semester and two formal critiques during midterms and finals. As a six-credit hour class, you are expected to have 1-2 completed works for the initial critique and approximately 4-5 new, completed paintings for each formal critique including any additional drawings or studies that accommodate the finished work. Be prepared for your critique: bring a new artist statement and copies for everyone, including the instructor. Bring your sketchbook to take note and create questions for your peers. Questions and comments for your peers will be prepared while reviewing their work. Remember, this is the final semester that you will gain feedback from your current peer group. Be professional; always begin critique with positive comments or questions that evolve to constructive criticism. There will be no doodling or phone use during critiques.
2 PRESENTATION: Each student will create a short but thorough presentation on his or hers developed body of work. This will be presented to the class in the second half of the semester via a PowerPoint presentation or other method previously discussed with your instructor. Imagery, research and inspiration will be explored in a professional but creative fashion. Be creative, prepared and consider everything! PROFESSIONAL PACKET: (in specific order as seen below) This is due toward the end of the semester. Please place all items below in a nice folder for presentation and safety as though you were applying for a gallery exhibition, grad program or employment opportunity. Resume Artist Statement Thumbnails Image page of your finished body of work for the semester (each cleanly numbered and organized on a single page) Please accompany images by number (image names should include title, year, dimensions and media ) CD of images reflecting your finished body of work for the semester (file names should include your name, title, year, dimensions and media ) ASSIGNMENTS: STUDIO PROPOSAL: At the onset of the semester, you will provide a 1-page project proposal describing your intentions for the class. This will reflect your conceptual ideas, materials to be used and content. IDEATION BOOK / SKETCHBOOK: Each student needs to maintain a sketchbook for collecting research and drawing preliminary thoughts. Images of other artists, writings, thoughts, images of interest, class readings, lectures and exhibition attendance, etc will also be contained in this book. See additional handout for documentation expectations. STATEMENTS: At least three artist statements will be written throughout the semester ARTIST BLOG / WEBSITE: (specifically for this course or an addendum to a current website) It will be expected that each student archive all work produced in this class on an online blog or website, all or part of which is specifically focused on exhibiting work from Advanced Painting. Free online sites such as blogspot.com, otherpeoplespixels.com and tumblr.com offer free, simple instructions to create your own artist website. An artist statement and resume will also be uploaded onto the site and updated regularly, after each critique. EXHIBITION: You are required to present your work in a solo exhibition at the end of the semester for graduation purposes. Time and place of your solo show to be determined by midterm, if not before. ATTENDANCE POLICY This is an advanced class and it is expected that each student attend each scheduled class meeting time as they would any job. Accordingly, attendance will be logged and monitored each class period throughout the week. Any absences accrued beyond three will be reflected in your final grade for the course. 3 absences are permitted without penalty 8 th absence = failure of the class Excessive tardiness (over 5 minutes) will greatly affect your participation grade Leaving for 30 minutes or more during any 3 hr class time, beyond breaks = an absence. Please let the instructor or GA know what you are doing if you need to leave the studio. If you miss more than 4 classes you cannot earn an A in the course ADDITIONAL STUDIO POLICIES
3 ! Professional behavior is expected. Inappropriate behavior could permit me to ask you to leave the studio, which may result in an absence.! Headphone Only Zone.
