He studied under his father and also with Aimé Millet, Augustin Drumont and Jean Thomas. Each of the three Moreau brothers, Hippolyte, Marthurin and Auguste, have become renowned for the quality and the beauty of their figurative work. Auguste himself is particularly known for his Art Noveau style figures with his subjects being primarily young maidens sensuously clad in a swirling diaphanous dress and usually decorated with flowers and birds or allegorical and genre scenes incorporating cupids and young children. His style was realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau family. His compositions encapsulate a feeling of innocence whilst incorporating an air of mischievous game. He both made and maintained clocks for a number of churches in the area including supplying a clock for the tower at Castle Cary Church for which he was paid In 1736 it is recorded in the records of Montacute Church Mr. Cockey For Righting the Clock and for the Agreement for the Keeping of in Repair for ye Year From 1737 until 1761 Cockey was paid per annum to look after this clock. A number of clocks are recorded by William Cockey including a longcase example in the Dorset Clock Museum at Owermoigne John Reid, Sanquhar, a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the fourteen-inch painted break-arch dial having black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials to the centre and religious scenes painted to the four corners and arch, with decorative brass hands, signed to the centre John Reid, Sanquhar, the mahogany case having a curved trunk door with a decorative moulding to the top, applied half-columns to the trunk, the hood with turned columns, a swan-neck pediment and brass ball and spire finials, the panelled base standing on bracket feet, height 226cm. * Biography John Reid is recorded as working as a clock and watchmaker in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland from before 1825 until circa John Pitt, Tetbury, an oak longcase clock the eightday duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the thirteen-inch break-arch painted dial with Arabic hour numerals, floral corner spandrels, a date aperture to the centre, decorative brass hands and signed Jno Pitt, Tetbury, the oak case with fluted canted corners to the trunk, a break-arch trunk door inset with stringing, the hood having square fluted pillars with brass capitals and a swanneck pediment, standing on bracket feet, height 217cm. *Biography John Pitt is recorded as working in Tetbury, Gloucestershire from the early 19 th century. A prolific maker of longcase clocks it is known that he looked after the clock at Tetbury Market House from 1816 until 1852 with a payment of per annum
