He studied under his father and also with Aimé Millet, Augustin Drumont and Jean Thomas. Each of the three Moreau brothers, Hippolyte, Marthurin and Auguste, have become renowned for the quality and the beauty of their figurative work. Auguste himself is particularly known for his Art Noveau style figures with his subjects being primarily young maidens sensuously clad in a swirling diaphanous dress and usually decorated with flowers and birds or allegorical and genre scenes incorporating cupids and young children. His style was realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau family. His compositions encapsulate a feeling of innocence whilst incorporating an air of mischievous game. Becker died in 1885 but the company continued making clocks until 1935 when it was taken over by the fast-expanding Junghans clockmaking concern Thomas Foster, Tiverton, a mahogany convex dial wall clock the timepiece fusee movement with shaped shoulders and an anchor escapement, the fourteen-inch round convex dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands and signed Thomas Foster, Tiverton, the mahogany case with a cast brass bezel and moulded surround, diameter 41cm. * Biography Thomas Foster is recorded as working in Fore Street, Tiverton as an auctioneer, appraiser and dealer in game, from circa 1820 until at least the 1850 s. Cockey, Yeovil, with cast brass female-head spandrels to the four corners and a matted dial centre, the oak case having a swan-neck pediment with brass patrae and fluted pillars to the hood with cast brass capitals, with the plain base standing on bracket feet, height 201cm * Biography William Cockey was a member of the wellknown Warminster family of clockmakers and bell founders. He both made and maintained clocks for a number of churches in the area including supplying a clock for the tower at Castle Cary Church for which he was paid In 1736 it is recorded in the records of Montacute Church Mr. Cockey For Righting the Clock and for the Agreement for the Keeping of in Repair for ye Year From 1737 until 1761 Cockey was paid per annum to look after this clock. A number of clocks are recorded by William Cockey including a longcase example in the Dorset Clock Museum at Owermoigne John Reid, Sanquhar, a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the fourteen-inch painted break-arch dial having black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials to the centre and religious scenes painted to the four corners and arch, with decorative brass hands, signed to the centre John Reid, Sanquhar, the mahogany case having a curved trunk door with a decorative moulding to the top, applied half-columns to the trunk, the hood with turned columns, a swan-neck pediment and brass ball and spire finials, the panelled base standing on bracket feet, height 226cm. * Biography John Reid is recorded as working as a clock and watchmaker in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland from before 1825 until circa John Pitt, Tetbury, an oak longcase clock the eightday duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the thirteen-inch break-arch painted dial with Arabic hour numerals, floral corner spandrels, a date aperture to the centre, decorative brass hands and signed Jno Pitt, Tetbury, the oak case with fluted canted corners to the trunk, a break-arch trunk door inset with stringing, the hood having square fluted pillars with brass capitals and a swanneck pediment, standing on bracket feet, height 217cm. *Biography John Pitt is recorded as working in Tetbury, Gloucestershire from the early 19 th century. A prolific maker of longcase clocks it is known that he looked after the clock at Tetbury Market House from 1816 until 1852 with a payment of per annum

51 712 Kent, Saffron Walden, a lacquer longcase clock the eight-day duration, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic five minute markings fleur-de-lys half-hour decoration and with an arcaded minute ring, the silvered dial centre with a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and engraved with a seascape scene, the arch having a silvered boss engraved with the name Kent, Saffron Walden, the black lacquer case with raised chinoiserie decoration, three-quarter columns to the hood, a shallow caddy top, a break-arch trunk door and giltwood finials, height 223cm. * Biography The Kent family of Clockmakers were working in Saffron Walden, Essex starting with Henry who was apprenticed in 1699 with this clock probably made by John Kent Snr who was married in 1764 and had a clockmaking son, also John, who was born in A William Kent had moved to Saffron Walden from Lynton in Cambridgeshire by 1753 and died there in 1783, a maker who numbered his clocks

53 714 Richard Deeble, Corke, a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, with the associated fourteeninch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring with engraved black Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute numerals, decorative halfhour markings and signed either side of VI o clock Ric Deeble, Corke, with engraved decoration to the four corners and arch, either side of the rocking soldier automata, the dial centre engraved with further floral decoration and with a subsidiary seconds dial, the later mahogany case with crossbanding to the trunk door and base, with the barley twist columns to the trunk with brass Corinthian capitals, with repeat columns to the hood, with the curved to surmounted by decorative cresting, height 276cm. * Biography Richard Deeble is recorded as being born in Cork, Ireland in 1675 and died in Jno Tarone & Co, Edinburgh, a Georgian wheel barometer the mahogany case inlaid with Sheraton style decoration to the top, bottom and sides, with triple stringing to the edge and an architectural pediment to the top with a brass finial to the centre, having a thermometer set within the trunk, the eightinch silvered dial signed Jno Tarone & Co, Edinburgh, with a brass pointer, blued steel setting hand and a concave cast bezel, height 98cm
