Leroy a Paris A striking brass carriage clock, the round, eight day duration movement having a duplex escapement with a plain balance and striking the hours & half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the backplate signed by the maker Leroy a Paris, the silvered dial engraved with engine turned decoration and having black Roman numerals with decorative blued steel hands, the brass case having classical mouldings and carrying handle, height 23cm (handle up). * There were a number of clockmaker s with this name in Paris at this time, including the business started by Basile Charles Leroy at Palais Royale and Leroy et Fils at the same location, all working from circa An Anglaise carriage clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with push button repeat, with a later platform lever escapement, the backplate stamped with the serial number 1304, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, contained in a fluted brass Anglaise case, height 19cm Japy Freres a Paris A French gilt metal and porcelain mantel clock of arched outline, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell, the gilt-metal case surmounted by a porcelain urn decorated with young lovers, the painted porcelain dial having black Roman numerals and signed by the retailer Tridham, Torquay, on a shaped acanthus decorated base, with giltwood stand, height 40cm. * For details of Japy Freres see lot no A. J. Valery, Paris A 19th Century ebonised and brass inlaid portico clock on shaped supports and cushion moulded base, the white enamel dial having Roman numerals, and signed J. Valery a Paris, the eight day duration movement with outside count wheel, striking the hours & half hours on a bell, with scroll decorated gilt metal grid iron pendulum, height 56cm Henri Jacot a Paris An Anglaise carriage clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with push button repeat, with a later platform lever escapement, the backplate stamped with the trademark & serial number of the maker Henri Jacot, 14752, with the secret Jacot mark stamped between the plates, the cream enamel dial having stylised Arabic numerals within white roundels and decoration to the centre, with blued steel spade hands, contained in a beaded brass Anglaise case, height 19cm. * The Jacot clockmaking firm was one of the most well known and best maker s of carriage clocks in the Victorian period with an address at 31, Rue de Montmorency, Paris. The first Henri Jacot died in 1868 and was succeeded by his nephew also Henri. They won many medals at exhibitions in both Paris and London including the Gold medal in

Vincenti et Cie A gilt-metal & marble mantel clock, the eight day duration movement having a platform cylinder escapement and striking the hours & half hours on a bell, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, Paris and set within a blue globe dial having applied gilt-metal Roman numerals and decorative brass hands, supported within the tail of a dolphin with a winged cherub to the side, standing on an oval marble base with further applied mounts, height 42cm. * Vincenti, a Corsican, set up his clock movement making business in Montbeliard in 1823 using machines of his own invention but went bankrupt within the year at which point the business was taken over by his manager Roux to become Vincenti et Cie L le A five minute repeating carriage clock, the eight day duration movement having a later platform lever escapement and striking the 655, 657 hours & half hours on a gong, with push button repeat, and having a further push button repeat for the five minutes striking on the same gong, the backplate stamped with the initials of the movement maker G.L. within an oval, being for the maker E.G. L le, along with the serial number 580 and wording Patent Surety Roller, the brass Anglaise case having pierced and engraved fretwork to the dial and sides, with the dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands, height 19cm (handle up) * E.G. L le of Paris was known to have invented this style of roller set on the frontplate of the movement and which prevented the star wheel inadvertently flicking over and putting the strike out of sequence Covington, Wimborne A striking skeleton clock, the eight day duration, twin fusee, six pillar movement having Gothic shaped plates with six spoke wheelwork and striking the hours on a bell with pull repeat, the silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and having 656 blued steel moon hands, with a further silvered plaque engraved with the maker s name Covington, Wimborne, on an ebonised oval base, height 38 cm (inc. base) * James Covington is recorded as working in Wimborne, Dorset from before 1841 until at least

20 An unusual Globe clock with barometer, the eight day duration movement having a cylinder escapement and set within a terrestrial globe between four gilded brass pillars which in turn stand on a marble base, with the shaped brass top having an aneroid barometer sat above, the globe signed Smith s Terrestrial Globe, the dial having black Arabic numerals and decorative blued steel hands, height 40cm Japy Freres a Paris A French gilt metal and porcelain mantel clock of classical form, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell, the gilt-metal case surmounted by a porcelain urn painted with floral & musical decoration, with a matching panel to the front and bulbous side pillars, the matching porcelain dial having black Roman numerals, on a giltwood stand with a further ebonised base, with glass dome, height 48cm * For details of Japy Freres see lot no Japy Freres a Paris An unusually shaped fourglass mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong and having a twin tube mercury compensating pendulum, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Japy Freres, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, the arched brass four-glass case having fluted pillars to the corners and engraved decorative bands to the top and base, height 40cm. * For details of Japy Freres see lot no Asprey A French marble and gilt metal mantel clock, the eight day duration timepiece movement having a platform lever escapement and stamped on the backplate with the movement maker s name Buren, the silvered dial having an engraved centre, black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands and signed by the retailer Asprey, London, the white marble case having applied gilt metal mounts and handle to the top, height 24cm A French Gothic style gilt metal and silvered boudoir clock, the eight day timepiece movement having a platform lever escapement, the engraved gilt metal case of classical form with silvered mounts, carytid figures below the cupola top and blued steel hands to the integral dial, height 26cm Japy Freres a Paris A French enamel-set fourglass mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the roulant blank maker Japy Freres a Paris, the gilded brass pendulum bob having champleve enamel to the centre and set with white and green glass stones, the gilded dial having Arabic hour numerals, blued steel hands and champleve enamel to the centre and further white & green stones set within the bezel, the Corniche style brass four-glass case having enamel to the top and lower bands, height 29cm. * Japy Freres was founded by Frederic Japy of Beaucount (born 1749), who first made movements for the clock industry at his factory in 1777, becoming the largest & most commercially important clockmaking concern in France. The business continued after his death by his sons

Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock, the timepiece movement stamped on the baseplate Jaeger-LeCoultre, Atmos, Brevete Router, Fab Suisse, Swiss Made, the frontplate stamped 6247, the top stamped with the number 7075, the dial having applied Roman numerals and tapered brass hands, the brass and glass case having canted corners, height 23.5cm. * The Atmos clock was first devised in the 1920 s by a Paris engineer J.L. Reuter who used mercury to react to changes in atmospheric pressure and which kept the clock running in near perpetual motion. The minute expansion and contraction of the gases within the container allowed the bellows to move and run the clock. The idea was taken up by LeCoultre who bought his idea and when they merged with rival watchmakers Jaeger considerable funds were set aside to develop the clock as it is known today with mercury replaced with less volatile gas Martin Baskett a Paris A French marble and gilt metal mounted mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the name Martin Baskett a Paris, the gilt-metal chapter ring having Roman numerals set on enamel plaques and with decorative blued steel hands, the white marble case having fluted, curved sides and surmounted by a spelter figure depicting a young boy astride a goat, height 50cm. 667 clocks, often signed with the company s name Junghans An oak Gothic mantel clock, the movement stamped with the trademark for the maker Junghans, the dial with black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and repeat of the maker s name, the oak case of Gothic castle form with brickwork decoration and turret, height 26.5cm. With one other mantel clock Vincenti et Cie a Paris A three piece clock garniture, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, the white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals, floral swags between the numerals and decorative gilt brass hands, the white marble case having a classical female figure to one side and a winged cherub to the other, with applied classical mounts to the front, sides and a front frieze depicting a musical scene, the two threelight candelabra side pieces having a winged cherub of each standing on white marble columns with applied gilt mounts, height: 41cm. * For details of Vincenti see lot no * Martin Basket was a retailer in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire who imported French

22 A French marble and bronzed mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, set within a brass drum case with the figure of a girl playing with a cat to one side and all sitting on a shaped black and verigrated green marble base, height 33cm A French Edwardian ebonised mantel clock, the eight day duration movement having a platform lever escapement, with the round silvered dial having a matted centre and chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, with blued steel hands, the arched ebonised case having an inset panel to the front with brass moulding and a pagoda top, height 25cm William Braund, Dartford A Regency mantel clock, the eight day duration, timepiece fusee movement having an anchor escapement, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands (one missing), the mahogany case having brass inlay to the front, height 34cm. * William Braund is recorded as working in Dartford, Kent from circa 1823 until Vincenti et Cie A French boulle mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with the backpate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, Paris, the brass dial having black Roman numerals to the individual enamel cartouches, with blued steel hands, the waisted tortoiseshell boulle case inlaid with engraved brass decoration, with cast brass mounts to the front and sides and to the shaped, glazed front door, height 48cm Raingo Freres, Paris An ormolu mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and silk suspension, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the roulant blanc maker, Raingo Freres and the clockmaker Silvani a Paris, the dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and a repeat of the signature, the ormolu case embellished with gilded rococo & floral decoration and fret work, height 37cm. * Raingo Freres are recorded as working in Paris, at Rue de Saintonge from 1834 until circa *J. 23 The Empire Globe Clock, having an eight day duration movement housed within the brass pedestal on which sits the rotating terrestrial globe, with the hour shown at the point where the brass semicircle meets the fixed circle placed on the equator and divided into 24 hours and their fractions, this semicircle can be shifted to any meridian, with the time difference between any location and the pre-selected one found where the other meridians intersect the hour circle, the globe carries the inscription Patent The Empire Clock, Cable, and shows the countries under the British Empire in red, height 35cm. * Patent number was issued to J. H. Overton on August 31, An example of this clock can be seen in at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence B. He was a staunch Catholic and presented a number of meteorological instruments to the Vatican.
