35 491 Drocourt a Paris, an engraved Gorge cased French striking carriage clock, the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half hours on a gong with push repeat and numbered 5758 to the backplate, stamped between the plates with the secret trademark for Drocourt of Paris, the white enamel dial having a florally engraved gilt mask, black Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, the Gorge case profusely engraved with floral decoration, with shuttered winding holes to the engraved solid back door, the inside engraved with the retailers details J.M. Baab, 19 Gerrard St, Soho, London, height: 13.5cm (handle down) * Pierre & Alfred Drocourt were one of the top maker s of carriage clocks in the mid-tolate Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolasd Ailermont being the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time, as well as premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They made superb carriage clocks which were often decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in The son, Alfred, succeeded his father Pierre sometime in the 1870 s. 149

36 Japy Freres, Paris, an alabaster and giltmetal mantle clock with an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the makers Japy Freres, the alabaster dial with raised brass Roman numerals and brass spade hands, the shaped Alabaster case with cast gilt-metal mounts and feet, height: 49cm Henry Marc a Paris, an inlaid rosewood mantel clock with an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Hy Marc, Paris, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel hands and repeat signature, the rectangular rosewood case with decorative inlay to the front and sides, with a cast brass handle to the top and standing on a stepped base, height: 23cm (handle down) Bright, Paris, a 19th Century French boulle work mantel clock with an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell, the backplate signed in script by the maker Bright, Paris, the two-piece white enamel dial with black Roman hour numerals, a sweep seconds hand, with a visible dead-beat escapement and calender dial to the centre, the shaped boulle case having engraved inlaid brass to the front and cast brass mouldings above the stepped base and standing on splayed cast brass feet, height: 40cm * Bright is recorded as working in Paris in the early 19th century. 150

37 495 A mid Victorian brass lantern clock with an eightday, double fusee movement striking the hours and quarters on two bells set below the bell strap, the six-inch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and decorative blued steel hands, with engraved dial centre and side doors, height: 43cm Ansonia Clock Co, a late 19th Century American gilt-metal timepiece in the form of a classical figure with arms aloft in which sits the ivorine dial with black Roman numerals and signed as above, with a paste-set bezel, height: 30cm

38 Japy Fils a Paris, a 19th Century French gilt metal and porcelain mounted mantel clock with an eightday duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the blue porcelain dial painted with floral decoration and with brass spade hands, the shaped gilt-metal case mounted with blue porcelain panels decorated with coloured floral decoration, birds and putti, with decorative giltmetal mounts to the case and surmounted with doves above an oval plaque painted with a depiction of Marie Antoinette, the rear of the case stamped with the name of the casemaker P.H. Mourey, standing on a shaped giltwood base and standing under a glass dome, height: 45cm An oak and copper Arts and Crafts period mantel timepiece, with a short duration movement, the square dial with raised roundels for the numerals, with an octagonal copper pendulum bob, height: 38cm

39 A Victorian bell-top bracket clock with an eight-day duration, double-fusee movement striking the hours on a gong, the arched brass dial with a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, a matted centre, cast corner spandrels and blued steel hands, with a boss within the arch engraved Tempus Fugit, the case with glazed sides and brass carrying handle to the top, with a brass presentation plaque attached, height: 38cm Joseph Greenhow, Chelmsford, a mahogany bracket clock with an eight-day duration, double fusee movement striking the hours on a bell, the backplate engraved with the maker s name Greenhow, Chelmsford, the eight-inch round painted dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and signed Joseph Greenhow, Chelmsford, the arched mahogany case with brass fishscale side frets, a brass carrying handle and an inset panel to the front, height: 40cm * Joseph Greenhow is recorded as working in Chelmsford, Essex from circa 1839 until

40 501 Parkinson & Bouts, a William IV mahogany lyre-shaped bracket clock with a double fusee, five pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the seven-inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel hands and signed Parkinson & Bouts, London, the mahogany lyre shaped case having applied carved foliate decoration, complete with matching bracket, height: 41cm * Parkinson and David Bouts are recorded as working at 59, Gracechurch Street, London from circa 1851 until the death of Bouts in 1883 aged sixty-one. 154

41 502 Birch & Gaydon, London, a George IV mahogany mantel timepiece with an eight-day duration, single fusee movement engraved with the maker s name to the backplate, the six-inch round silvered dial signed Birch & Gaydon, 153 Fenchurch Street, London, the mahogany arched top case having boxwood stringing to the front, cast brass handles to the sides and standing on ball feet, height: 36cm * William Birch is recorded as working at 173, Fenchurch Street, London in circa 1840 as successor to William Turner and was probably the same Birch known to have been working in Tenterden, Kent before this date and then as a partnership with John Masters from circa The partnership in London with Gaydon was known before 1875 as successors to William Birch and was still going in Birch died in 1903 aged eighty-eight. 155

42 503 Handley & Moore, London a late Georgian pad-top bracket clock with an eight-day duration, double fusee movement striking the hours on a bell, the backplate having border engraving and signed to the centre Handley & Moore, London, the eight-inch round painted dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands, the mahogany break-arch case having a single pad top, brass fishscale frets to the front and sides, brass carrying handle and standing on pad feet, height: 43cm * George Handley and John Moore of Clerkenwell Close, London were fine and well-known clockmakers working from 1798 until the death of Handley in 1824 after which Moore continued alone. The partnership supplied many movements and clocks to top grade makers of the period and used a number of distinctive features on their movements such as the style of border engraving to the backplate, a feature also used by Thwaites & Reed, another supplier of high quality movements. Both Handley and Moore were apprentices to John Thwaites in the late 18th century. 156

43 Frodsham, London, a decorative mahogany bracket clock with an eight-day duration, double fusee movement striking the hours on a bell, the backplate engraved with the maker s name Frodsham, Gracechurch Street, London, the eight-inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and repeat signature, the mahogany case having a raised top with pineapple finial, canted corners, cornucopia side handles, brass fishscale frets and brass decoration to the front, standing on ball feet, height: 62cm * John Frodsham, born 1781, is recorded as working as a watch, clock and chronometer maker at 33, Gracechurch Street, London from his move there in 1825 having taken over the firm following the death of his father William Frodsham in 1805 and his grandfather, also William, in He was made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1830 with the firm becoming Frodsham & Sons between 1835 and his death in 1849, the sons being Henry John who was apprenticed to him, and George Edward who was John Frodsham s successor. 45 506 William Frodsham, Red Lion Square, London, a Georgian walnut bell-top bracket clock, the eight-day duration five-pillar movement with verge escapement striking the hours on a bell, the backplate engraved with Oriental decoration, the seven-inch arched brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals with the matted dial centre having a date aperture and shaped cartouche below XII o clock engraved with the maker s name William Frodsham, Red Lion Sq, London, with cast c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and decorative blued steel hands, with a strike/silent dial to the arch, the mahogany bell-top case with curved canted corners, brass fishscale frets to the sides and front and a brass carrying handle to the top, height: 45cm (handle down) * William Frodsham, born 1728, was the founder of this famous family firm of clockmakers and made an honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1781 before opening his own retail shop at 12, Kingsgate Street, Red Lion Square, London. He was an important maker who may well have acted as a journeyman to Justin Vuilliamy and was taught the art of watch jewelling by his friend, the great chronometer maker Thomas Earnshaw. This caused a problem for Frodsham when in 1804 he was asked by the Board of Longitude to give evidence regarding a reward for Earnshaw following the latter s claim to have improved the detached escapement. William Frodsham died in November 1807 having outlived his son, the clockmaker William the younger, by 18 months. It was this son born 1755, with whom William the elder worked in partnership from circa 1779, the firm being known from this date as William Frodsham & Son. 159

46 507 John Ebsworth, Londini fecit, a 17th century brass lantern clock with a short duration, weight driven movement with balance wheel escapement, striking the hours on a bell set below the bell strap, the six-inch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, matchstick man half-hour markings, with tulip engraving to the centre and signed John Ebsworth at ye cross keys in Lothbury, Londini, the cross keys being an engraved depiction, the case with typical turned finials, pillars and feet, with brass dolphin frets to the top, height: 38cm. * John Ebsworth was a pre-eminent and important early clockmaker who was apprenticed to Richard Aymes on the 23rd of February 1657, becoming free on the 3rd of April He was an assistant to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1682 becoming a warden between 1694 and 1696 and finally Master in He worked at the Cross Keys, Lothbury, London and may well have succeeded the famous lantern clock maker Thomas Knifton. He died in 1699 with his will proven in September of that year

The son of the clockmaker James Crawshaw, he married in 1800 and died in A late 18th century mahogany longcase clock with an eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the thirteen-inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands and subsidiary seconds and date dials, the mahogany round-topped case with cross banding and stringing to the trunk and base, fluted corners and canted corners to the base, height: 204cm William Knottesford, London a 17th century and later longcase clock with an eightday duration, six finned-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the ten-inch square brass dial with a silvered skeletonised chapter ring and winged cherub spandrels to the four corners, the matted dial centre having a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, the later walnut case having barley twist columns and with a plain base, height: 190cm * William Knottesford was apprenticed in 1657 to Henry Child becoming a freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1663 until his death in circa He was the father of clockmaker John Knottesford who was apprenticed to him in
