5 A bronzed head of a winged cherub looking skyward with outstretched wings, mounted on a white marble socle base, 56cm. high. * A 19th century mahogany medicine cabinet the hinged double-front enclosing an arrangement of pigeonholes and drawers, containing glass bottles, balance scales and other accessories, including hand written remedies for ailments, with concealed compartment to the rear containing four clear glass bottles, 31cm. wide. * An antique iron lock and key of barrel shaped outline with turn-screw action, 11cm. high. * A Charles II embroidered mirror frame of arched outline, the rectangular mirror plate enclosed by an embroidered silkwork border depicting Charles II and Catherine of Braganza under marital canopies, with sunshine over a palace to the arch, stag, leopard, unicorn and lion to the corners and flowering shrubs, birds and insects all worked with coloured silks within a velvet lined cushion frame, 78 cm x 59 cm. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20%

8 A Chinese cloisonne enamel bowl and cover of globular form with flared footrim, decorated overall with panels containing a qilin, phoenix, cranes, bats, clouds, flowers and foliage on turquoise, deep blue, yellow and white grounds, 17th century, 18 cm diameter [minor damage and losses]. *

9 A pair of Chinese brass candlesticks modelled in the form of cranes riding on the backs of turtles, 35cm. high. * A large Chinese carved hardwood figure of Shou Lao the smiling Immortal holding a knarled staff and a peach, a crane and a turtle at his feet, 95 cm high. * A large bronze figure of Guanyin dressed in traditional robes and standing on a lotus flower, 75cm. high. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20% 131

10 607 A rare Chinese cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze tripod censer, Ming Dynasty the globular body with twin arching reeded handles ending with ruyi heads and eight wave pattern bosses below the rim, decorated with a design of four taotie masks amongst scrolling foliage with a band of archaistic dragons above, three large lotus blooms to the underside in green, yellow, blue, brown, white and black enamels on a turquoise ground, on lotus bud cabriole legs, 21 cm wide, 16 cm high. * This fine censer was purchased at a house sale in Devon circa 1964/65 by the late husband of the present owner. He attended the sale with the intention of buying a Georgian tallboy, which he did, but when viewing saw the censer, liked the colour of the enamels and purchased it for a modest sum. It was used for several years as a plant pot but after being itemised in a late 1970s insurance valuation, was upgraded to a desk tidy for paper clips and pens. 132

14 A Japanese bronze study of a monkey seated wearing a jerkin, holding a pair of spectacles in his right hand whilst inspecting, a netsuke held in his left hand, cast signature to the base, Hideyoshi kansei on a polished wood stand. Meiji period, height of figure not including stand 15cm. * A Japanese bronze study of a bear lying on its back with glass inset eyes and open mouth, signed Masatsune no saku Meiji period, 33cm. long. * Masatsune no saku is also pronounced Seijo no saku, but this is not the signature of Izumi Seijo. 622 A group of eight Japanese woodblock prints heightened with watercolours, depicting birds, lake and sky scenes, signed, Meiji, approx 34 x 20 cm *

15 A Chinese interior painted glass snuff bottle, signed Zhou Gongzhi with coral and jadeite stopper, painted in sepia on one side with a bird on a flowering branch, the other with trees in a landscape, signed Made by Zhou Gongzhi, at the riverside in capital, 7 cm. * A Chinese jade and applied gold crouching figure in traditional costume, with applied paste stones, 8cm. long. * Two Chinese mandarin silk embroidered sleeve bands one decorated with figures in a pagoda landscape, the other with crickets amongst flowering shrubs, both mounted and framed 67 x 34cm. * A collection of nine Japanese carved and stained ivory okimonos figural subjects, including Budai, mothers and children and a boy with an octopus, late Meiji/Taisho, 3-5 cm high. * A group of three Japanese ivory okimonos including a shibayama ivory standing elephant, 6cm high [some damage]; a caparisoned elephant with large howdah, 5 cm and an inlaid shi shi with one paw resting on a ball, 3 cm. * After Ito Nisaburo, Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple in Snow woodblock print, 39 x 26cm. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20% 137

16 629 A fine Japanese carved and inlaid ivory okimono, signed Gyokusai inlaid with mother of pearl, wood and coral, the samurai holding a sake cup and gourdshaped bottle, a small boy to one side trying to steal some dumplings from a packet attached to the samurai s robe, signed on a red lacquer tablet, Meiji, 19 cm high [repair to one arm]. * Two Japanese carved ivory okimonos, one signed Gyokudan of a tiger and a lion, both standing in aggressive pose, Meiji, 18 and 20 cm [lion with glue repair to two legs] on carved wood stands. * A Japanese ivory wakizashi finely carved overall with numerous figures in interiors and landscapes, ho-ho, flowers and foliage, with suspension loops and cord, Meiji, 64 cm long. *

17 A large Japanese carved sectional ivory okimono, signed Shogyoku of a bijin performing the flower-hat-dance wearing floral decorated kimono, Meiji, 26 cm [some loss and repair]. * Two Japanese carved ivory okimonos the first in the form of a group of three acrobats with one held aloft by the main standing figure, signed, Meiji, 20 cm [one foot re-stuck]; the second a cormorant fisherman, signed, Meiji, 18 cm [2]. * A Japanese carved ivory okimono of father and son knife sharpeners both seated, the father with a wet stone, the son holding a folding knife, signed, Meiji, 5 cm high [minor loss]. * A Japanese carved ivory okimono, signed Isshi; and a netsuke, signed Gyokushu the first in the form of a street vendor selling traditional drums, signed on red lacquer tablet, Meiji, 8 cm [some damage]; the netsuke as the smiling seated figure of Hotei with a karako boy poring sake into a cup, 4 cm [2]. * After Toyokuni III ( ), two woodblock prints Prince Genji seated in traditional costume, woodblock print, mounted but unframed 36 x 25cm. together with another print of figures on a sampan during a snow storm, mounted but unframed, 36 x 25cm. 18 Kamba Tribe, (Kenya, East Africa) a carved hardwood stool of circular form raised on four legs terminating in pad feet, 37.5cm. diameter. * An Indo-Persian bronze study of a horse s head with open mouth and pricked ears, incised with foliate decoration, 32cm. wide. * A 19th century Persian steel and silver figure of a stag with inlaid Arabic decoration of scrolls and cartouches to it s head, body and upper legs, 39.5cm. high. * A Far Eastern buddhistic thangka of traditional design, the central scene of a temple interior with Buddha seated, within rings decorated with levels of enlightenment and other deities, contained within a silk brocade border, 94 x 56cm. * A Nepalese buddhistic thangka centred with a seated Buddha, the circle divided by various paths to enlightenment, decorated with assorted deities and demons and enclosed by entwined dragon border, signed Prem Lama, 60 x 45cm. * Four Mohgul watercolours depicting assorted birds including Ducks, Hawk, Vulture and Peacocks, each mounted within floral backgrounds, each image 16.5 x 9.5cm. * Four Mohgul botanical watercolours depicting various flowers all with butterflies, and script above the image, each 23 x 14cm. * Five Mohgul watercolours of various subjects including flowers, warrior and script, various sizes. * A 19th Century Near Eastern hardwood and brass mounted spice box of rectangular outline, with domed hinged lid enclosing a plain interior, 28cm. wide. * A bronze figure of Ganesha in traditional costume, seated on a lotus flower, 29cm. high. * An Indo-Persian brass, niello enamel and silver hookah pipe base of traditional ovoid form on a knopped stem and circular base, raised on four swept feet, 39cm. high *

24 A 19th century coromandel and brass strung vanity case of rectangular outline, the hinged lid enclosing a fitted lift-out tray and compartments with clear glass and silver mounted bottles and jars, having a spring-loaded plain frieze drawer to the front, 31cm. wide. * A Victorian tortoiseshell and silver gilt mounted card box, maker Atkin Brothers, London, 1893 of rectangular outline, the domed hinged lid with applied silver suit emblems with similar motifs to the sides, the fitted silver gilt interior holding two marker boards and two sets of playing cards, 14cm. wide. * A late 19th century miniature shell display stand of arched outline, with mirror back and various shelves, mounted with various seashells, signed Teignmouth, 23cm. wide, 24cm. high. * A 19th century Dieppe ivory miniature three tier dumb waiter each shelf laden with miniature goblets, cups and saucers, vases, clock and pen stand, with mirror panelled back, 11.5cm. wide. * A collection of seven South Staffordshire enamel patch boxes decorated with various mottos and scenes, including oval and circular examples. *

25 A 19th century Dutch horn snuff box of oval outline with penwork decoration, 8cm. wide, a rectangular bone snuff box and a treen snuff box 8.5cm. wide (3). * A A late 19th century Sevres porcelain and gilt mounted planter of oval outline, with pierced trellis and baskets of flowering shrubs raised on fluted columns to the side, on peg feet, 29cm. wide. * A 19th century novelty snuff box in the form of a shoe, with sliding top, 9cm. long. * A Chinese inlaid horn box and cover of square outline with canted corners, the sides decorated with floral sprays and characters, 4cm. high, together with a late dynasty shabti, 6cm. high. * A German carved ivory group in the form of a mythological couple, probably Bacchus and Ariadne with cupid below, 17th century, 9 cm [formally a knife handle] on faux ebony plinth. * A 20th century Sepik (Papua New Guinea) house sculpture in the form of a canoe, with polychrome decoration of a female fertility figure, crocodiles and dance mask, 110cm. long. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20%

26 British School 20th Century, in the Manner of Jacob Epstein- Dagnall Ells, bronze bust on rectangular marble base 25cm overall. * Dagnall Ells was a Trustee of the Tate Gallery. He worked in insurance in London and was a keen art collector, notably of 20th Century Italian paintings and sculpture. In his own collection he had three Turner watercolours of Venice, a Marini horseman and an Epstein Mother and Child bronze. Ells was related by marriage to Gustav Hellmut Sail [ ], see Picture lots After Leon Pilet ( ) a bronze study of a Greek philosopher, possibly Socrates dressed in classical robes, holding a scroll in his left hand and seated on a stool, signed to the stool L Pilet, 26.5cm. high. * Gwendoline [Gwen] Le Gallienne [ ] an Art Nouveau bronze fairy tripod vase of rounded trefoil shape and formed from the outstretched wings of three fairies, signed Gwen le Gallienne and with founder s seal for A.Valsuani Cire Perdue, 14 cm wide. * Biography Gwendoline Le Gallienne was the daughter of the artist Roland Hinton Perry and his wife Irma. She became a sculptor and painter and her portraits include James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and Amelia Earhart. Her stepsister was Eva Le Gallienne, actress and film director. * After E Laurent ( ) a bronze study of a young girl harvesting signed to the base E Laurent, 52cm. high. * A carved wood and polychrome decorated figure of St Sebastian the semi-naked figure tied to a tree and pierced with arrows in his arms, legs, head and side, overall height 86cm. *

27 After Felix Lecomte (French ) a bronze bust of Marie Antoinette portrayed with hair tied up and adorned with flowers, her head turned slightly to dexter, a medallion cast with a profile of King Louis XVI hung at her decolletage, on a waisted socle and polished marble base, overall height 33.5cm. * After Leon Noel Delagrange, A gilt bronze and ivory figure of La Page Royal dressed in page s livery and holding a book, signed in cast Delagrange, mounted on a polished onyx base, 22cm. high, circa * An alabaster figure of a Dutch girl wearing a tied bodice and long skirt and sabots with a mandolin leaning against a wall, raised on a square base, overall height, 65cm. high. * A late 19th century spelter and marble figure group of a neoclassical seminaked maiden seated reading a book on a curved marble wall seat, 50cm. high. * A pair of late 19th/early 20th century bronze cavaliers in traditional costume each supporting side arms, one with a walking stick, mounted on polished black marble bases, unsigned, 38cm. high. * A bronze bust Comoedia in the form of a female neoclassical bust wearing a comedy mask on her head, mounted on a polished plinth base overall height 35cm. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20% 149

With Louis- Albert Holingue, the son and likely successor of Louis, married and settled in Paris with seemingly little interest in returning to the town, the brothers sold their workshops and equipment to Alfred Drocourt in 1875, having supplied Drocourt for a number of years with movements for his own clocks finished in Paris. Their workshops were positioned across the road from those of Henri Jacot, to whom they supplied a number of blancs roulants in the early 1870s and with whom there was a family connection. Having been renamed Delépine-Barrois, the company was taken over in the early 20 th century by the Coullait brothers, who continued making carriage clocks in the town. He was considered a master of his craft in France at this time and had an unsurpassed reputation. Between 1833 and 1842 he produced three most important pieces, each incorporating a miniature musician. At the Paris Exposition of 1878, at the age of 77, he showed two automata, The Physician and The Singing Lesson for which he was awarded a bronze medal. In 1853 they had been granted a patent for the fitting of a movement pendulum (balance) A Victorian French bronze and marble clock in the form of a canon the eight-day duration timepiece movement having a platform lever escapement, the round white enamel dial with stylised Roman numerals and blued steel hands, set within a bronze canon with gimbaled sides and standing on a rouge marble base, height 13cms. * Achille Brocot, Paris, an ormolu and porcelain mantel clock the eightday duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell and having a Brocot pendulum regulation adjustment, the backplate stamped with the trademark for Achille Brocot, the initials A.B. within a five-pointed star, and numbered 2990, the round white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and signed Achille Brocot, the ormolu case of classical form, the plinth with scroll sides and having a lion s head to the 732 Samuel Marti, Paris, a brass and enamelled oval four glass clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong and having a Brocot regulation to the suspension, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker showing a Paris Exposition award, S. Marti et Cie, Medaille d Argent, 1889, and numbered 2259, the round white enamel dial having black Arabic hour numerals with coloured swags set between and decorative blued steel hands, the bezel set with cut paste brilliants, the gilded pendulum bob with matching brilliants, the oval brass four-glass case having bands of coloured champlevé enamel set to the base and top with grooved corners, height 29cms. * Biography Samuel Marti was one of the most prolific French makers of the 1800s and was known to be working circa 1860 at Le Pays de Montbeliard, Paris making roulant blancs. Along with Japy Freres and Roux they set up a business in 1863 to market their movements to such firms as L Epee. Their Paris address was Rue Vieilledu-Temple from centre with swags of floral decoration between shaped pink porcelain panels set within each and painted with a depiction of a putto, all on a breakfront base with cast decoration to the front and standing on decorative cast feet, height 28cms. * Biography Achille Brocot was born in 1817 and died in He worked at Rue de Parc-Royal, Paris and after his death (a five page obituary was printed in the Revue Chronometrique) his son continued the business until 1889 when it was taken over by Gibaudet.

David died in Reference Brian Loomes, Watch & Clockmakers of the World; NAG Press, Felix Sandoz, London, a bronze and marble fusee mantel clock the eightday duration, double-fusee movement striking the hours on a bell, the round white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and signed by the maker Felix Sandoz, London, sitting between two black marble pillars with flat ormolu urns to the top and surmounted by an ormolu eagle on a further black marble plinth, the base of white marble with an ormolu frieze set to the front depicting classical figures with the whole standing on decorative ormolu feet, height 41cms. * Biography Felix Sandoz is recorded as working in London in circa 1800 and may well have been the maker of the same name who originated from Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland sometime after 1758, where the large family were well-known clockmakers, including his grandfather David who made a clock which he gave to the town A mid-nineteenth century mahogany clock bracket the curved tapering base with satinwood crossbanding and scroll moulding to the end-stop, height 32cms, top 35cms x 22cms. * * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20% 155

Benjamin was apprenticed to Edward Maskell becoming a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1686 and raised to the Livery in November He took various apprentices of his own including Thomas Merryman, presumably a brother, in November 1692 until Thomas was turned over to another clockmaker in By 1688 Benjamin Merriman had premises located at Belle Savage Yard, Ludgate Hill, whilst Henry Merriman, born circa 1655 and apprenticed 1667, was recorded at Belle Savage Inne, both being in close proximity to the workshops of Fromanteel. Benjamin Merriman may well have had a friendship to Edward Banger, partner to the famed Thomas Tompion, as on the 12 th of January 1693 he alleged the marriage of Edward s sister Mary Banger to Edward Line. Another example, with a wooden movement showing the influence of the great John Harrison who had previously worked in the area, is on display at The Collection, Art & Archaeology in Leicestershire where it is stated Although influenced by Harrison, Sutton remains an outstanding craftsman and innovator in his own right.
