3 Where Do Our Animal Hats Come From? The Morales family of Otavalo, Ecuador hand crafts our knitted wool caps in their home workshop, high in the Andes Mountains. While many families in and around Otavalo make knitted and woven products, Arts of Ecuador searched this area looking for the artisans with the highest quality products and best designs. We believe you won t find finer knit caps than those made exclusively for Arts of Ecuador by the Morales family. They are true artists in wool. And all of their caps are lined with a soft, stretchy acrylic fabric for additional warmth and comfort. Rene uses a hand-powered knitting machine to make the body of the caps, as well as the animal s ears and earflaps. He also sews the linings as the final touch. His wife Lucila makes the molded parts of the face and adds the details such as the eyes and eyebrows, nose and mouth as well as extra fur and defining features. Older daughter, Tamia, 16, helps sew the seams and finish the edges. Younger daughter, Koya, 7, helps with the tassels. Although they are teaching their daughters the business of making caps, Rene and Lucila hope both will get a college education and have better opportunities. Rene and Lucila do most of the work while their two daughters are in school or studying. It s hard work and requires long hours for both of them. They must also tend their garden, which provides most of their food during the year, and do the household chores. Arts of Ecuador helps support artisans such as Rene and Lucila by purchasing their products at a fair market price and returning a portion of each sale to an education fund for their children. Tagua, also called vegetable ivory, is the nut of the Tagua Palm tree that grows primarily in the warm moist areas of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Each tree produces bushels of nuts every year. Once harvested, the nuts are dried, cut and carved into various shapes, then dyed the many colors you see in our keychains. Some of the nuts are left in their natural color, like our turtle keychain pictured here. This design takes advantage of the creamy ivory interior of the nut as well as the brown outer seed coat. Besides their use as keychains, these products can also be used as backpack pulls for the students in your life. 10
