1 Style natural African type hair using twisting and wrapping techniques Overview This unit is about using a variety of twisting techniques and wrapping in order to style natural African type hair. A high degree of manual dexterity is required. 2 Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 maintain safe and effective methods of working when using twisting techniques and wrapping by P1.1 ensuring your client s clothing is effectively protected throughout the service P1.2 positioning your client to meet the needs of the service without causing them discomfort P1.3 ensuring your own posture and position whilst working minimises fatigue and the risk of injury P1.4 keeping your work area clean and tidy throughout the service P1.5 using working methods that - minimise the wastage of styling and finishing products - minimise the risk of cross-infection - make effective use of your working time - ensure the use of clean resources - minimise the risk of harm or injury to yourself and others P1.6 ensuring your personal standards of health and hygiene minimise the risk of cross- infection, infestation and offence to your clients and colleagues P1.7 using products and methods identified as a result of consultation with your client P1.8 referring clients with untreated conditions to a general practitioner and or trichologist, when necessary P1.9 completing styling within a commercially viable time P2 style hair by twisting by P2.1 confirming with your client the look agreed at consultation prior to and during the service P2.2 preparing your client's hair in a way which is suitable for the style agreed P2.3 effectively securing any hair not being styled to keep your section clearly visible P2.4 maintaining a suitable and even tension throughout the twisting process P2.5 effectively controlling and securing the twist into the desired look P2.6 combining and adapting your twisting techniques in a way to achieve the desired look P2.7 using twisting techniques to take account of the factors which influence the achievement of the desired look P2.8 using twisting techniques in a way that avoids damage to the hair and scalp P2.9 ensuring the completed twists are of uniform size 2
