2 Jesse Bruton Cover: Jesse Bruton Turnabout (c. 1967) (detail) Oil on canvas Courtesy the artist Exhibition 6 July 11 September 2016 First Floor Galleries 1 Jesse Bruton in his studio (c. 1969) Photograph by Peter Cox Courtesy the artist 2 Jesse Bruton Study for Backtrack (c. 1967) (detail) Pencil watercolour gouache and contre crayon on paper Courtesy the artist 1 2 Jesse Bruton is one of the founding artists of Ikon. This exhibition tells the fascinating story of his artistic development, starting in the 1950s and ending in 1972 when Bruton stopped painting to embark on a career in picture conservation. Having studied at the College of Art in Birmingham, Bruton was a lecturer there during the early 1960s, following a scholarship year in Spain and a period of National Service. He exhibited in a number of group shows in Birmingham, especially at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and had a solo exhibition at Ikon shortly after the gallery opened to the public in 1965, and again in Like a number of his contemporaries, Bruton developed an artistic practice inspired by landscape and many of his early paintings were of the Welsh mountains and the Pembrokeshire coast. Alive to the aesthetic possibilities of places he visited, he made vivid painterly translations based on a stringent palette of black and white. They reflected his particular interest in the way things worked, things like valleys, rock formations and rivers. Bruton s painting Rising Locks (c.1965) epitomises this reductive tendency. Depicting a run of canal locks, it is reminiscent of early works by Piet Mondrian, through repetitive, almost cubist, gestures inside an oval shape. Bruton s later paintings appear calligraphic, involving white bands meandering across black surfaces, modulated by texture through brushstrokes and the use of a palette knife with different mixtures of medium and pigment. Their titles, such as Winding, Turnabout and Back-up, refer to long-distance driving, the concentration on the road and the peripheral awareness of other things around. Rather than depicting the landscape destinations of a car journey, these works constitute Bruton s strong desire to embody the experience of the journey itself, their aesthetic restraint more appropriate for the artist s attempt to convey something essential derived from personal experience. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, including text by Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director. Visit Ikon s online shop at for the full range of Ikon s catalogues and limited editions.
3 Kan Xuan Exhibition 6 July 11 September 2016 Second Floor Galleries 3 Ikon shows the first UK exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Kan Xuan (born 1972, Anhui province), presenting a wide selection of single screen video pieces made since the late 1990s. Refreshingly unpretentious and economical in style, with familiar subject matter, they are profoundly philosophical about the nature of human life. Kan Xuan s work is often based on personal experience, and she herself sometimes features, as in the early video Kanxuan! Ai! (1999) in which she is seen dashing through subway tunnels shouting her own name, as if searching for herself, and answering in the affirmative, Ai!. She is moving against a tide of heaving humanity, at once anxious, funny, romantic, whilst making a clear political statement, representing the plight of an individual in the face of a totalitarian mass. Other early works convey the personal as physical. Looking, looking, looking for (2002) traces the movement of a spider across two naked bodies, young, lithe, one male, one female. Viewers are pushed and pulled between feelings that arise from such sensuality and arachnophobic tendencies while identifying with the oblivious creature, simply seeking a place to hide. In the same year Kan Xuan made A persimmon, in which she passes a ripe piece of fruit between her hands, reducing it to a juicy pulp in the process and so combining lusciousness and cruelty. In contrast, A happy girl (2002) is wonderfully straightforward. Made soon after the artist arrived in Amsterdam from Beijing, it shows an empty sculpture pedestal in a leafy garden, suddenly occupied by the artist, naked and dancing. The playful freedom of her movement suggests sheer joy, found in herself and in her circumstances. Kan Xuan made other works during her time in Europe that similarly convey feelings of liberation and an exciting voyage of discovery. She also became increasingly preoccupied by the effects of globalisation and its economic impact, both in China and the West, especially for those who do not enjoy political power. She saw the widening gap between rich and poor as symptomatic of notions of true value becoming lost reflected in works such as Garbage (1999) and Island ( ). The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, including text by Shanghai based writer Leiping Lu. 4 Patrick Killoran Observation Deck (Birmingham) Exhibition 6 July 11 September 2016 Tower Room, Second Floor 8 Patrick Killoran Observation Deck (Birmingham) (2000) Visitors are invited to Ikon s Tower Room where they can lie on a horizontal platform and slide partially out a window of the building. Killoran thus plays with our instinctive sense of vulnerability while at the same time activating a heightened awareness of our body s precise location in time and space. Public space and the role of participation in contemporary art informed by social practice are essential elements of Killoran s work. Observation Deck (Birmingham), remains an incomplete artwork until the audience joins in. By simply repositioning what is readily available to the visitor, Killoran s artistic intervention operates as a minimal gesture of contextualisation as experience. Observation Deck (Queens) was exhibited for the first time at PS1 in New York nearly 20 years ago, and has had a number of iterations since. Ikon offers the only currently installed version of the work in the world. Please note the Tower Room is only accessible via a number of steps and this installation is not suitable for children under 10. Black Country Voyages The Auspicious Journey Black Country Voyages ( ) is an art programme for local people, involving members of the Ikon Youth Programme (IYP). It takes place on board a canal boat, lent by Sandwell Council. Mahtab Hussain, lead artist for Black Country Voyages 2016, has converted the boat into The Auspicious Journey, a story of mass displacement in Kashmir, Pakistan in the 1960s that led to the establishment of new communities in the Black Country. Pamela Scott Wilkie Journey Exhibition 6 July 11 September 2016 Tower staircase and Café Opus at Ikon 9 Pamela Scott Wilkie Central Turkey (1970) Silkscreen print British artist Pamela Scott Wilkie creates work that evolves out of the serendipity of real experience, travel and the unfolding adventure of journeys. Ikon shows Journey, a series of silkscreen prints the artist produced during an overland expedition to Asia in Inspired by the landscapes and people of the countries she passed through, these prints were made in a makeshift studio in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, using the materials available. First shown at Ikon in 1972 it is now in private and public collections including the V&A. A set of artist s proofs, this Journey series has been generously donated to Ikon by the artist. Please note a section of this exhibition is only accessible via a number of steps. The construction of the Mangla Dam, across the Jhelum River, between 1961 and 1967, resulted in over 280 villages and towns of Mirpur and Dadyal being submerged and over 110,000 people being displaced. Some of those affected were given work permits for Britain by the Government of Pakistan, with many making their way to find work in the Midlands or the North West. The canal system was the bloodline of industry for the Black Country and it was here many migrants came to find work. Working with clay and traditional photography, Hussain is making work about the people affected by the dam construction. During the summer he hosts creative workshops for visitors to interact with Black Country Voyages. For more information visit or call Ikon on #blackcountryvoyages

Sonata for solo cello (1960) was written parallel to Die Soldaten and both works are based on the same symmetrical tone row.
