4 Beginnings. came out of my comfort zone and tried initiating conversations with some of my fellow freshmen. To my surprise, the people I started talking to were really nice. I guess it pays to push ourselves sometimes. Yew Syi Kai Jim (left) I have many memorable moments in RMT of attending LEAP classes with our Course Manager, Mr Samuel Tan. 5 At the start of this course, I had a lot of doubt about whether this was right for me. After one year, I realise I made the right choice. There is so much to learn in this course. you about different aspects of retailing, which blew my mind, of course in a good way. 7 Learning who we are. One of the challenges I encountered was during Year 2, when we took the team and I faced challenges with bringing in a vendor to supply us with the products that we wanted. In the end, we had to change our concept and source products which were totally different from what we had in mind. From that experience, I learnt not to give up and to keep on working that I still had my team with me. We eventually worked it out together. Ng Shi Xian (left) I dream of becoming my own boss one day. RMT has taught me many techniques such as how to entice customers, how to motivate your employees, how to market your product and how to manage I will always remember the hands-on training sessions at 1st Avenue. Unlike my peers, I have never worked at any afraid I was while standing behind the cashier counter as I was afraid of discrepancies and that the whole class would have to bear the cost of any losses. Working at 1st Avenue also front of a crowd as each department the store opens and debrief after the store closes. Janessa Lee (centre) I went on an Overseas Community purpose of the trip was to help the local retailer, Khun Jack refurbish the store with the intention of bringing about an increase in their sales and in turn, help working for Khun Jack. We were divided into groups with each group taking charge of one department in the store. My group was in charge of organic fabrics, and we were tasked to create a display for the organic fabrics. We took part in drilling and sawing of the wood and canes to display the merchandise. Although it was a short duration, I was glad I got the opportunity to apply the retail concepts I ve learnt. 8 Getting wiser. be highly useful even when I entered university. It gave me a solid foundation in marketing, and spurred me to read more widely in this area. I am inspired by successful retail brands, and how the strategic mix of retail and marketing comes together to make that happen. both of which are closely related to my education choices. RMT has given me a good standing goals in this industry. Soh Si Min Graduated, 2014 SMU Bachelor of Business Management, Year 3 Retail Event Management as we had to put up an entire event from scratch. It was satisfying to see all our hard work bring smiles to the attendees faces. RMT gave me opportunities to work with different training at 1st Avenue. I had a dream of gaining admission into SMU and RMT helped me achieve that by believing in me. The constant care and encouragement I received from my lecturers and friends made me work hard and pushed me toward realising my goal. 9 RMT, which made presentations and sharing sessions during tutorials a little uncomfortable for me. But the numerous presentations and group many opportunities to work on this weakness. It boosted my self-esteem in presenting and encouraged me to speak I m happy to say that I am able to conduct a presentation to a large group with no inhibitions! Roslyn Chew Graduated, 2016 NTU Bachelor of Business, Year 1 and academically driven as my goal was to enter a local university after completing my diploma. Whenever I scored below expectations, I would be greatly affected. Over the years, I learnt that grades do not be so hard on myself. Rather than chase after grades, I learnt to let go and to that I am here to acquire knowledge and skills that I do not have. It was during my RMT days that I realised who I want to be and what I want in life. Honestly, I didn t know what I sure I wasn t the only one who felt that way. RMT helped me realise that I really love communicating with people. Now, I get to meet people and understand more about the retail industry everyday. The relationships I am building with my customers and colleagues really motivate me. You never know when you need an extra pair of hands to pull you up and get you back on your feet. I had great peers that motivated and helped me out in my studies. I love that we were a small cohort. Whenever it came to activities or events, everyone would actively participate and ensure everything ran smoothly and that everyone was having fun. I met my two best friends in TP and although we do not meet know that we are there for each other, a phone call away. I feel a great sense of satisfaction at work when I see a vacant space on the shelf because that means a customer has bought something. 11 days in RMT is the caring guidance and constant motivation from all the lecturers and my course mates. I did not expect a diploma course to be so was very tiring but all the lecturers and course mates became the reason I wanted to go to school every day. I was working part-time while studying. RMT taught me how to manage my time and prioritise my tasks effectively. It helped me to balance my work life and consistently and graduated with good results. 13 What was your favourite RMT subject? Hazel Ng Area Manager, Innisfree Singapore Daniel: the practical sessions at 1st Avenue. I got to plan and execute events and manage the weekly retail operations of 1st Avenue. The different classes were constantly competing to achieve the weekly top sales spot. Somehow, my class was the top every week except for one week. Amelia: It was fun being able to buy and sell in 1st Avenue. It felt like I was tending to my own brand. We also got to conceptualize and execute visual merchandising. Seeing school mates buy our products was a very rewarding experience. So it makes sense that I am a fashion buyer now and I m surprised I still keep in touch with the Course Manager, Mr Samuel Tan after all these years. He s always been approachable and encouraging. I m happy that we got to do a short collaboration with 1st Avenue for AAPE. Did you overcome any challenges or perhaps learn a couple of things along the way? Daniel: I guess the biggest challenge I had was to write reports. I am bad at expressing my ideas. I remember I did not do very well for one of my report submissions but thankfully, Mr Samuel Tan improve my report. The one-hour session with him did not go to waste as it not only helped me in my days in RMT but also when I was working on my University reports. Hazel: RMT taught me to to be people-oriented. It applies to managing internal clients as well as when meeting external clients. RMT s courses allowed me to constantly remind myself that it may take a while to understand a customer. To provide the best service to them is essential. If they are impressed with me, they will return. I would say this relationship is special, as my customers have become my friends. 15 Eyes wide open. 1. I was very excited when I was enrolled in RMT. Being in the retail industry has been my dream ever since I was young, as I was inspired by my mum who was also from the retail industry. I dream of becoming an entrepreneur and opening my own fashion retail store. For now, I m working in the marketing department in a mall, liasing with tenants and hopefully inching closer to my dream. Shopping makes people happy and I like being a part of that. Noel Lim Graduated, 2016 Waterway Point; Frasers Centrepoint 2. We had loads of fun coming up with the merchandise concept, Mad About TP from scratch, with the guidance of Mr Samuel Tan. There were many aspects to be considered, and at that age, it was good exposure. It was one step closer to the real retail world for all of us. It inspired Kelly Ann Teo Graduated, 2012 Sales Manager, Head of Ladieswear; Robinsons 3. For now, looking at the happy faces of customers at Cold Storage, Market Place watching customers pick up fresh fruits that I procured. The thought of being able to bring the best from all over the world to the customers excites me. Also, with the changing landscape of the retail environment, I look forward to how technology will change retail dynamics. Kelvin Ong Graduated, 2011 Category Manager, Fruits; Cold Storage 4. Retail is challenging. There are constant front line but for those in the back end as well. But what excites me is knowing that all the hard work from the team will pay purchases and come back for more. 16 I remember looking forward to often in discussions with my group members to decide what were the bestselling products, in order to restock these items at 1st Avenue. We would then monitor the daily sales performance of the products. Subsequently, we would make a decision on how best to manage our merchandise. I loved generating barcodes and pasting them on the displayed! Goh Meng Yun Graduated, 2012 Leasing Executive, Changi Airport Group the computer screen for long hours, analysing and planning for seasonal such tasks from RMT. For inspiration, I look through a lot of online shops and social media platforms such as Instagram. However, what inspires me most is to step away from the screen and go out inspiring me in their own unique ways. 17 On the go. It is about people as consumers, their wants and needs, the decisions they make and the way they react. Customers interest me most when it comes to retail. No two customers are the same and everyone has different needs and wants. What makes it more interesting is that these needs and wants are ever changing and with the advent of technology, retailers are constantly challenged. My role as a Brand Executive requires me to do both merchandising and marketing. The knowledge in my current role. 18 I always wanted to have my own business. fundamentals of accounting, marketing, branding and merchandising helped me as an entrepreneur. During my course, I interned at a local start-up selling yoga apparel and accessories. I was greatly inspired by the founder and that internship provided me with the insights of managing a business. Visual Merchandising taught me that visuals speak to customers, and I have Now I am always particular about visuals. 19 Self starters. My overseas internship opportunity to South Africa was arguably the most challenging and eye-opening experience for me. life values and to not take things for granted. Fashion and fashion designers inspire me. RMT offered me a 360 view and helped me develop an understanding of the operational and strategic aspects of managing a retail business. 20 Retail Management Interest Group 2017/2018 Ties that bind. Cherylene Chin (Vice President): Being a perfectionist, I have to ensure that everything goes according to plan and that it has to be fun for the participants. However, through the events we ve organised, I learnt that not everything can go according to plan. The way we react to changes Alex Teo (President): awkward around everyone as I did not know anyone well. We got to know each other better as we planned events together. Especially during the RMT Camp as we faced several challenges and we dealt with them together. Gerallyn Goh (Head of Marketing): We became more bonded as an IG committee after event that we planned together. Everyone in IG has a unique personality. I am glad that we are able to get along so well despite the different personalities. Felyn Low (Head of Welfare): The most common challenges I face are the last minute situations that always seem to crop up. Organising events trained me to better organise myself, to remain calm and come up with solutions on the spot. Amelia Chua (Vice President): Being in this committee, I learnt to adapt to changes quickly and to listen and compromise with people. As we need to have many meetings and plan many events, I have learnt these skills are very Dion Goh (Head of Marketing): year in this committee, we had our disagreements and come to a consensus quite quickly. As each of us have different strengths and weaknesses, we are able to help each other out in different aspects such that I feel we are stronger as a whole. Vivian Yong (Head of Administration): The most memorable moment I had with my RMIG committee was the late night supper and heartto-heart talks we had during the IG camp last year. We ordered McDonald s and spent practically the random stuff. Even though we decided that we would nap for half an hour before getting up, we ended up sleeping till the next morning. 21 RMT Seniors were exposed to a real-life working environment Project S.T.E.P. Held at both IKEA stores, students planned and executed interactive game stations to help educate the public and raise awareness of IKEA s range of sustainable products. Mr Oussama Labib, Learning & Development Manager of Ikano Private Limited shared, It was a great experience to have RMT seniors in our IKEA stores. They took responsibility of the concept design, event planning and organisation. IKEA customers learnt about living a more sustainable Home through various engaging activities. July, 2016 Our RMT Juniors hamming it up while on a Study and Merchandise Buying Trip in Seoul, South Korea. RMT s second year curriculum includes a study and buying trip which allows students to experience the region s various retail formats and to source unique merchandise to be sold at our retail training laboratory, 1st Avenue. October, 2016 Students packing up after completing an Overseas Community Project Khun Jack, an eco-sustainable shop that employs villagers in April, 2017 Students from the Retail Management Interest Group collaborated with the Singapore Rugby Union and SportCares Foundation in HSBC Rugby Sevens Competition at the Sports Hub. Sales from the merchandise sold were donated to the SportCares Foundation, the philanthropic arm of SportCares. Mr Kerk Kim Por, Director of SportCares Foundation shared, SportCares is overwhelmed by the passion and dedication shown by both students and lecturers in teaching our youth the ropes of merchandise sales during the event. Thus, the course s proposition is essential as the diploma is constantly evolving to address the needs of students, parents and industry partners. At RMT, the teaching team drives the programme passionately and innovates continuously to meet the needs of changing industry landscapes. Since the course s inception in 2005, the course syllabus has been revised to its current fourth version. Over the years, we are very proud to have collaborated with strategic leaders like Zalora, SME partners such as Atlas Sound & Vision to local design studio, Supermama and home and lifestyle giant, IKEA. In conversation. I ve had the opportunity to teach quite a few RMT classes Economics, over the past eight years. Although I only spend time with them in their Freshmen year, they ve always come across as truly unassuming students who try to apply themselves.
