The candles in the cluttered workshop flickered as if blown by a strong wind and then returned to normal. Their light cast a weak glow across the numerous tomes, scrolls, and clay tablets that lay across the many tables. Crystals and gemstones of various shapes and sizes cast irregular shadows that danced in the candlelight. Gwendolyn Fenestra squinted in the dim light at the large peridot gem sitting in the jewelers vise on her workbench. The jewelers lenses she wore magnified her blue-green eyes to three times their normal size. Her hands trembled slightly, holding the diamond-tipped chisel in her left hand and the small jewelers hammer in her right. The peridot sat in the vise, its deep green color seeming to absorb the dim candlelight, its form that of a curved dragon horn. Six days of work came down to this final cut and, with it, she d know if her efforts had born fruit. With a deep breath, Gwendolyn positioned the chisel. With a small TAP of the hammer the final piece of the peridot fell away. To the untrained eye nothing about the gem had changed, but she could tell that she had succeeded. This was her most difficult work to date, but she knew that this peridot gemstone was now ready; it had become a dragon bone, ready to call forth a juvenile red dragon from the natural magic of the gem that she had just harnessed. Gwendolyn sat back with a sigh and pulled her jewelers lenses atop her long, red hair. She lifted the dragon bone in her hands and lovingly caressed it, her hands recalling every cut she d made. Yes, this truly was her best work to date. You will be quite useful to somebody, she said aloud. And I think I know a buyer who ll be willing to pay me the price you command. She stood from the workbench and blew out the candles. With a turn, she headed out of her workshop to send a message to her potential buyer. Many scholars and wizards of great renown have long suspected that the gems and minerals that make up the very heart of the world hold untapped power. Each mineral, they believe, holds a natural magic within its crystalline structure waiting to be unlocked. Many attempts were made by early wizards to try and unlock the mysteries of this natural magic. Most of these early attempts failed for one reason or another. Occasionally, a wizard or shaman would unwittingly stumble upon the secret to releasing the magic of a particular mineral. It was these few and far between accidents that kept the wizards searching for the answers to their questions. It wasn t until the science of mineralogy caught up with the magical arts that the wizards began to understand the reasons for why their attempts had failed. Each mineral has a unique crystalline structure. Jewelers have long known this and use their knowledge to cut the facets into gemstones. However, beneath this first order structure lies a hidden second order structure that can only be identified through careful study and research. This second order structure is the key to unlocking the natural magic within all gems and minerals. Once this second order structure is identified, a wizard skilled in gemcutting can work the mineral, shaving off the non-magical burden, leaving behind what some call the true form of the mineral, the magical heart. This process is called harnessing and it can be a tedious exercise. The rewards are worth the effort, however, as the wizard is able to harness the natural magic of the mineral, turning a mundane piece of the earth into an object of magical wonder. 3

Some wizards, those not skilled or learned enough in the ways of gemcutting and harnessing, have been able to copy the effects of the naturally harnessed minerals. True purveyors of the science of harnessing gems consider these created items to be second-rate knock-offs. While the wizards may debate among themselves, the adventurers don t seem to mind. This book is the first volume in a series of books that detail the many different gems and minerals and the benefits that they provide when their magic is harnessed. New Feats Harness Gem [Item Creation] You can unlock the natural magic found within gems and minerals. Prerequisites: Caster level 5 th, Craft Wondrous Item, Skill Focus: Craft (Gemcutting) Benefit: You can unlock the natural magical properties from gems and minerals by making a Craft (Gemcutting) skill check. Unlocking the natural magic of a gem takes one day for each 500 gp in its base price and a Craft (Gemcutting) skill check. (The minimum time to harness a gem is 1 day.) The DC of the skill check varies based upon the gem or mineral being harnessed. If the skill check fails, the gem or mineral is ruined and the attempt to harness the gem fails. To harness a magical gem, you must spend 1/25 of its base price in XP. A harnessed gem has a market value half of the regular market value had a spell caster of the same level created the item (not including the cost of the gem), due to the natural magical energy being released from within the mineral instead of being cast into it. A mineral will only appear as a magical item after it has been harnessed; prior to harnessing, the mineral does not radiate any magical auras. Mineral Attunement [General] You have an uncanny feel for the first and second order structures found in gems and minerals. Benefit: You receive a +2 bonus on any Appraise, Craft, or Knowledge skill checks involving gems and minerals. Mineral Entries Each mineral entry lists the name of the mineral needed to harness the magical item and that items common name. The entry includes a description of the item, short histories when appropriate, and a description of the items function. Each entry then includes the magic aura the item gives off, the minimum caster level needed to harness the item, and the prerequisites needed. A market price is also listed, and this price includes the value of the gem or mineral listed in the prerequisites. In addition, each entry also includes optional information needed for those who want to craft the item from normal magical means rather than harnessing the minerals natural magic. 4

Aquamarine Fear Charm The fear charm is harnessed from a single crystal of aquamarine. The crystal is no larger than the index finger on a human and, once properly crafted and the magic is released, is either held or attached to a gold or silver chain and worn as a necklace. When held or worn, the fear charm provides a +4 magical bonus to saves against fear spells and effects, including cause fear and a dragon s frightful presence. Faint Abjuration; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Aquamarine crystal worth at least 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 18; Harnessed Market Price: 8,000 gp. Optional - Faint Abjuration; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Aquamarine crystal worth at least 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, remove fear; Created Market Price: 15,500 gp. Calcite Image Gem The image gem is harnessed from a flawless crystal of calcite and crafted into a rectangular shape three inches long, two inches high, and half an inch wide. Skilled wizards have created similar magical items but the image gem is unique. The image gem has the ability to record multiple still images or moving images. When harnessed, an image gem has 50 charges. For each charge that is expended, one still image can be captured. Capturing a moving image lasting 6 seconds long (1 round) uses 5 charges. The image is recorded into the gem by holding the crystal to the user s eye and activating it by touching the top of the image gem. Touching the top captures one image; touching and holding the top captures a moving image for as long as the top is touched or until all the charges are used. Once an image is recorded into the gem, it can be displayed again by holding the image gem flat and activating it again. The recorded image then appears on the surface of the image gem. If the recorded image is a moving image it begins and will repeat continuously until the command word Stop is spoken. A moving image can be frozen in place with the command word Freeze. For still images, saying the command word Next allows you to see the subsequent image and the command word Back displays the previous image. Once recorded, the images can be displayed even after the image gem s charges have been used up and it is unable to record new images. The images held within the image gem are destroyed if the image gem is destroyed. A spell caster using a recorded image from the image gem of a person, place or thing, is considered to have the following benefits: specific knowledge of the item (for locate object), has studied it carefully (for teleport, teleport object, greater teleport, or teleportation circle), or firsthand knowledge and a likeness/picture (for scrying or greater scrying). Faint Illusion; CL: 5 th ; Prerequisites: Flawless calcite crystal worth 50 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 15; Harnessed Market Value: 2,550 gp. 5

Optional - Faint Illusion; CL: 5 th ; Prerequisites: Flawless calcite crystal worth 50 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, silent image; Crafted Market Value: 5,050 gp. Citrine Troll Stone The troll stone is a highly prized item. First harnessed by Hanna Whynn, a cleric and master healer of Temoca, the Goddess of Healing, the troll stone has since become a staple in many adventurers kits. A troll stone is harnessed from a large crystal of citrine when the gem is carved into a rough image of a troll. To benefit from the gems magic, the troll stone must be held in the hand. When held, all damage dealt to the bearer is considered to be nonlethal damage. In addition, the bearer heals nonlethal damage at the rate of 5 points per round. Fire and acid attacks deal normal damage to the bearer while holding the troll stone (any resistances, magical or otherwise, the bearer may possess against these attack forms still apply). The bearer can also reattach severed limbs while holding the troll stone. To reattach a body part, the severed part must touch the body while the person is holding the troll stone. (Putting the troll stone in a severed hand has no effect.) If the bearer of the troll stone stops touching it, any nonlethal damage that was previously dealt and not yet healed immediately converts to lethal damage. Strong Conjuration; CL 13 th ; Prerequisites: Citrine worth at least 2,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (carving) or Profession (sculpture) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 93,000 gp. Optional - Strong Conjuration; CL 13 th ; Prerequisites: Citrine worth at least 2,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, regeneration; Crafted Market Value: 184,000 gp. Diamond Crystal Ice Crystal Ice is harnessed from a diamond with a deep blue color and is the size of a human thumbnail. The natural magic of the diamond can be harnessed by a skilled mage crafting the diamond into the shape of a one-inch square cube. Once crafted, crystal ice allows the bearer to dramatically lower the temperature in an area extending out in a 300-foot radius from the gem once per day. Once activated, the temperature within the area of effect gradually lowers to well below freezing (-150 o F) over a period of ten minutes. This dramatic drop in temperature lasts for 12 hours. The extreme temperature conditions created by crystal ice cause unprotected characters to suffer 1d6 points of damage for each minute of exposure. Any existing weather conditions that were in place when the gem is activated are stacked on top of the extreme cold created by the gem. For example, rain becomes freezing rain or snow; fog becomes freezing fog, etc. 6

If crystal ice is placed in water and activated, the water will become frozen out to the area of effect of the gem. If placed in a large enough body of water (large lake, ocean) the gem will create a hemisphere of ice to a depth of 300 feet and a diameter of 600 feet. Crystal ice that is activated in the presence of a water elemental that is unable to flee before the full effects take place, will force the elemental to make a fortitude save, DC 13, or become frozen into a solid block of ice. The elemental is unharmed by this transformation and returns to its normal state once the duration of the activation expires. The gem may trap aquatic animals if activated in water. These animals become frozen within the ice created and are unharmed by the process, returning to normal once the duration of the activation expires. Crystal ice has no effect on creatures (other than elementals) with the water sub-type. Fire-based creatures suffer 2d6 points of damage for each minute of exposure to the gems effects. Strong Transmutation; CL: 13 th; Prerequisites: Blue diamond worth at least 1,500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 24; Harnessed Market Value: 19,500 gp. Optional - Strong Transmutation; CL: 13 th; Prerequisites: Blue diamond worth at least 1,500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, control weather; Crafted Market Value: 37,500 gp. Finding Gem Harnessed from a large, flawless, colorless diamond, the finding gem is a powerful tool for an adventurer. The diamond is carved into a simple, round-faceted cut, with the tip of the bottom of the gem cut flat. When cut, a finding gem is about one inch in diameter and is a just over one inch tall. Standing the gem on its tip and telling the gem what you want to find activates the finding gem. The gem then provides a detailed map, showing the location of the named item, place, or person in relation to you. The finding gem can be activated once per day. The projection lasts for ten minutes. To find a creature with the finding gem, you must have seen the creature or have an item that once belonged to it. To find an object, you must have touched it at least once. To find a place, you must have visited the place at least once. The map shows the location of the item, person, or place in relation to the activator s position, so the scale of the map will reflect this (i.e., if the sought object is 1,000 miles away, the scale of the map will be quite large, with few details, and if the sought object is nearby, the scale of the map will be quite small with many details). The map projected by the gem shows only the physical characteristics of the location and will not reveal the presence of other people, monsters, or traps. This means that asking the gem to show you the location of a magic sword that was once in your possession will show you where the sword is, but will not show that the sword is being guarded by an ancient red dragon. Strong Divination/Faint Illusion; CL 15 th ; Prerequisites: Flawless clear diamond worth at least 5,000 gp, Harness gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 26; Harnessed Market Value: 29,000 gp. Optional - Strong Divination/Faint Illusion; CL 15 th; Prerequisites: Flawless clear diamond worth at least 5,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, discern location, silent image; Crafted Market Value: 53,000 gp. 7

Fire Opal Fire Starter At first look this is an unassuming fire opal gem, smoothly polished and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Polishing the stone into an oval shape two inches long, one inch wide, and an eighth of an inch thick and carving a small flame onto the face of the gem harnesses its magic. When a fire starter is held in the hand, the bearer is able to cast the spell burning hands as a 5 th level caster, dealing 5d4 points of fire damage. A fire starter can be used three times per day. Faint Evocation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Fire Opal gem worth at least 750 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 15; Harnessed Market Value: 3,750 gp. Optional - Faint Evocation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Fire Opal gem worth at least 750 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, burning hands; Crafted Market Value: 6,750 gp. Fluorite Hydra Tooth Legends have been told through the ages that the teeth of the hydra, when planted in the ground, will grow into fierce skeleton warriors. Magical scholars and wizards think that there is truth in these legends and point to the natural magical abilities of the harnessed fluorite crystal, which gets its name, hydra tooth, from these legends. To harness the minerals magical properties, a well-formed fluorite crystal must be carved into the form of a hydra s tooth about three inches in length. Burying the harnessed mineral into in loose dirt, soil, or sand activates the magical property of the hydra tooth and is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity. One round after burial, eight human warrior skeletons will grow from the ground surrounding the spot. (One skeleton appears on a standard grid from each square surrounding the square where the hydra tooth was planted.) The skeletons are under the command of the person that planted the hydra tooth and will remain animated until turned or destroyed. The maximum number of skeletons you are able to command with hydra teeth is 60. Moderate Necromancy; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Fluorite crystal worth at least 50 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 21; Harnessed Market Value: 425 gp. Optional - Moderate Necromancy; CL 5 th; Prerequisites: Fluorite crystal worth at least 50 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, animate dead; Crafted Market Value: 800 gp. 8

Galena Anchor Stone For many an adventuring party hoping to make a quick getaway from danger, or for creatures with spell-like abilities that allow them quick and easy travel between planes, the anchor stone has been an unpleasant surprise. An anchor stone is harnessed from the mineral galena. The mineral is crafted into a circular disk four inches in diameter with a six-pointed star on its top surface. Placing the anchor stone on the ground and touching the star activates the anchor stone. (This is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity.) When activated, the anchor stone produces a field out to a radius of 200 feet. This field completely blocks extradimensional travel. Forms of movement barred by the anchor stone include: astral projection, blink, dimension door, ethereal jaunt, etherealness, maze, plane shift, shadow walk, teleport, and similar spell-like or psionic abilities. The spell also prevents the use of a gate or teleportation circle for the duration of the spell. The field lasts for 10 minutes. An anchor stone can be used three times per day. Moderate Abjuration; CL 10 th; Prerequisites: Galena worth at least 50 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 20; Harnessed Market Value: 24,050 gp. Optional - Moderate Abjuration; CL 10 th; Prerequisites: Galena worth at least 50 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, dimension anchor; Crafted Market Value: 48,050 gp. Halite Melt Melt has become an invaluable tool for many adventurers, especially those that travel frequently in colder climates. Melt is harnessed from purely formed halite crystals. The natural magic is harnessed when the halite crystal is carved into a four-sided equilateral pyramid three inches tall. Melt is activated by crushing the pyramid, a standard action using a weapon that deals bludgeoning damage or by making a Strength check (DC 23). Once activated, all snow and ice within a 100-foot radius is instantly melted and evaporated, leaving behind a dry surface. If activated in a location where there is more ice outside the radius, such as on a glacier or ice cap, the magical effect creates a bowl-shaped depression 100 feet deep and 200 feet in diameter. Activating the harnessed mineral on the side of a mountain has a 50% chance of creating an avalanche on the snow that remains outside of the radius of effect. Activating melt on a surface of floating ice will create a hole in the ice 200 feet in diameter, providing that the ice is not greater than 100 feet thick. Creatures made of ice that are within the area of effect when melt is activated must make a Fortitude save (DC 15) or be destroyed. Creatures with the cold sub-type are unaffected by melt. Strong Universal; CL 13 th; Prerequisites: Halite crystal worth at least 50 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 20; Harnessed Market Value: 2,550 gp. 9

Optional - Strong Universal; CL 13 th ; Prerequisites: Halite crystal worth at least 50 gp, Create Wondrous Item, limited wish; Crafted Market Value: 5,050 gp. Jade Gem of Prescience This is a powerful gem that is harnessed from the purest quality jade. Carving the jade into the shape of an eye set over a triangle harnesses the magical properties of the gem. Three times per day, the bearer of a gem of prescience is able to add a +15 insight bonus to their next single attack roll, opposed ability or skill check, or saving throw. In addition activating a gem of prescience can add a +15 insight bonus to your armor class even if you are caught flat-footed. A gem of prescience is activated at will and you must declare that you have activated the gem of prescience prior to making any rolls. Strong Divination; CL 15 th; Prerequisites: Jade crystal worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 28; Harnessed Market Value: 76,000 gp. Optional - Strong Divination; CL 15 th; Prerequisites: Jade crystal worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, moment of prescience; Crafted Market Value: 151,000 gp. Jasper Rogue Stone The rogue stone has found a large following among many of the rogue s guilds across the land. First harnessed by Loran Greyfoot, a wizard that also plied his skills as a liberator of wealth from the rich, the rogue stone is a simple, red-colored jasper stone. It is specially cut so that the edges are amorphous in shape while, from the front, it has a wavy pattern to it with three incised grooves. Three times per day, the bearer of the rogue stone is able to turn themselves invisible for up to 30 minutes. While invisible, the bearer of the rogue stone cannot take any action that would be considered a direct attack against another individual; doing so breaks the natural magic and the bearer becomes visible again. Faint Illusion; CL: 5 th ; Prerequisites: Jasper worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 20; Harnessed Market Value: 7,000 gp. Optional - Faint Illusion; CL: 5 th ; Prerequisites: Jasper worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, invisibility; Crafted Market Value: 13,000 gp. Malachite Healer s Gem It is said that the first healer s gem was harnessed by a cleric of Temoca, the Goddess of Healing. Since that time, the skill to harness the powers of malachite has been passed on to many others. To harness the minerals natural magic, a large malachite 10

mineral is carved into a rough humanoid shape with arms and legs slightly spread. To activate the magic, the harnessed gem is placed on the chest of a person that suffers from an ailment. (Placing and activating the healer s gem is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.) The harnessed gem draws out the ailment and places it into the gem. Once the healer s gem has been used 50 times, it turns into dust and is destroyed. A healer s gem removes all temporary ability damage (including the effects of feeblemind) and immediately ends all of the following adverse conditions: blinded, confused (including the effects of insanity), dazed, dazzled, deafened, diseased, exhausted, fatigued, nauseated, sickened, stunned, and poisoned. In addition, a healer s gem will heal up to 100 hit points of damage (a person cannot gain more hit points than they previously had through the use of the healer s gem). A healer s gem cannot remove negative levels, restore permanently drained levels, or restore permanently drained ability scores. Strong Conjuration; CL 11 th ; Prerequisites: Malachite mineral worth at least 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 18; Harnessed Market Value: 33,500 gp. Optional - Strong Conjuration; CL 11 th ; Prerequisites: Malachite mineral worth at least 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, heal; Crafted Market Value: 66,500 gp. Obsidian, Snowflake Ghost Tip Magical scholars have traced the origin of the ghost tip to an aboriginal tribe of humans that were renowned in legend as great fighters of incorporeal undead. These legends were thought to be just that until an explorer found a ghost tip while searching the ruins of these aborigines. Scholars were able to quickly unravel the natural magic of the harnessed gem and proved that the legends were true. A ghost tip is crafted from white on black snowflake obsidian. The mineral is crafted into the shape of an arrowhead or spear point. When the point is affixed to an arrow, crossbow bolt, or a wooden shaft to make a spear, it allows the weapon to be used normally against incorporeal creatures. The harnessed mineral grants a +1 bonus to hit and damage rolls. Ghost tip arrows and crossbow bolts that succeed in hitting their target lose their natural magic and cannot be used again. A ghost tip arrow or bolt that misses its target has a 50% chance of being destroyed and becoming useless. Ghost tip spears do not lose their harnessed magic. Moderate Conjuration; CL 9 th ; Prerequisites: Snowflake obsidian worth at least 50 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (weaponsmithing) DC 24; Harnessed Market Value: 130 gp. (Price is for 1 arrow or 1 crossbow bolt. For a spear, the Harnessed Market Value is 4,050 gp.) Optional - Moderate Conjuration; CL 9 th ; Prerequisites: Snowflake obsidian worth at least 50 gp, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, magic weapon, plane shift; Crafted Market Value: 210 gp. (Price is for 1 arrow or 1 crossbow bolt. For a spear, the Crafted Market Value is 8,050 gp.) 11

Peridot Dragon Bone The mineral peridot has a powerful natural magic that is tapped when the gem is harnessed. Dragon bone allows for the bearer of the item to summon draconic creatures to fight at their side. Depending on the size and value of the peridot used, the dragon bone will summon different creatures. Each gem is carved into the shape of a dragon horn no matter the size or value of the peridot. The harnessed magic is released when the dragon bone is cast to the ground. At the spot where the dragon bone lands, the summoned creature(s) will appear and fight at the command of the person who threw the dragon bone to the ground. The following table gives the value of the peridot needed and the type of creature(s) that can be summoned by that crystal. Rock Crystal Sending Gem The renowned wizard, scholar, and inventor, Alyx Anderbell, harnessed the first sending gem and demonstrated the useful qualities of the gem by sending a short message to his assistant. A sending gem is harnessed out of several flawless quartz crystals, a minimum of two, which have grown together into a single mass. To fully harness the crystal s magical properties, the mass of crystals must be carefully separated into individual crystals without damaging any of the crystals. Once separated and the magic is harnessed, the individual crystals become attuned to each other. From then on, the bearer of one crystal can send and receive messages to any or all of the other crystals that have been attuned. Each crystal is marked with an arcane mark to label it, typically with a unique number or name. The bearer can then specify all to send a message to all crystals that have been attuned, or can specify a known crystal by its unique identifier to send a message to only one attuned crystal. By using this latter method, it is possible to send a message to a sending gem that has not been attuned with the bearer s gem, as long as the unique identifier is known. To use a sending gem, the bearer holds the gem before their head about six inches away and speaks in a clear voice. On the receiver s gem, a small auditory tone or bell sounds, announcing the receipt of a message. The message is delivered in real time and is auditory as well as visual, showing an image of the speaker s head. This allows messages to be heard if visual conditions do not allow the receiver to see the sending gem, and allows a recipient to see the other speaker and possibly understand the message if the recipient cannot hear. (A Spot skill check DC 15 is needed to read the person s lips and get a general feel of the 13

message being sent.) The speaker can hold the gem closer and whisper if they want. (The receiver of a whispered message must make a Listen check DC 10 to hear the complete message.) Sending gems have spread across the globe and have found their way into many adventuring bands due to their usefulness. In addition, in wealthy, magically rich regions, many people can afford to buy sending gems for personal use, where they can either be attached at a fixed location, or carried by individuals. Moderate Evocation and Faint Illusion; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Rock Crystal worth at least 500 gp in value, Harness Gem, arcane mark, Craft (gemcutting) DC 24; Harnessed Market Value: 28,500 gp. Optional - Moderate Evocation and Faint Illusion; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Rock Crystal worth at least 500 gp in value, Craft Wondrous Item, sending, silent image, arcane mark; Crafted Market Value: 56,500 gp. Ruby Barbarian Blood Stone Though long sought after for its rarity and beauty, the ruby has been coveted by mages and wizards for its other, magical, properties. To harness the ruby s natural magic, the wizard must carve the gem into a perfectly symmetrical teardrop shape about two centimeters in size. When carved, the barbarian blood stone is often set into a headband or necklace. Once harnessed, the gem allows a non-barbarian to enter a state of mind identical to the rage ability of the barbarian. The bearer can enter this state three times per day. Each time, the bearer gains a +2 bonus to Strength and Constitution, a +1 bonus on Will saves, and a 2 penalty to AC. This state lasts for 5 rounds. Barbarians covet the barbarian blood stone because, for them, the stone has different properties. When a barbarian bearing a blood stone enters a rage, the blood stone enhances their rage to grant a +6 bonus to Strength and Dexterity, a +2 bonus on Will saves, and a 3 penalty to AC. The rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the new Constitution modifier. In addition, once the barbarian leaves their rage they are not fatigued. Faint Enchantment; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Ruby gem worth 2,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 11,000 gp. Optional - Faint Enchantment; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Ruby gem worth 2,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, rage; Crafted Market Value: 20,000 gp. Scoria Whistle Stone This small stone is made from volcanic rock that is cut through with dozens of tiny holes. A piece of scoria must be crafted into a sphere the size of a walnut for the magic to be harnessed. Once harnessed, a whistle stone can be thrown as a weapon with a range increment of 20 feet. As the stone travels through 14

the air, it creates a long, high pitched whistle and, upon reaching its target, erupts into a deafening blast of sound. This blast deals 1d8 points of sonic damage to all creatures in a 10- foot radius. In addition, all affected creatures must make a Fortitude save (DC 13) or be deafened. Once used, the whistle stone is destroyed. Faint Necromancy and Faint Evocation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Scoria worth 25 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 15; Harnessed Market Value: 400 gp. Optional - Faint Necromancy and Faint Evocation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Scoria worth 25 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, blindness/deafness, sound burst; Crafted Market Value: 775 gp. Sodalite Chain of Knowledge Sodalite is a bluish-colored mineral that is easy to carve. Wizards long ago learned of the magical properties of sodalite and set about harnessing the gems powers. To harness its magic, the mineral is carved into a chain at least 10 inches in length. The chain must be carved from a single piece of sodalite for the magic to be harnessed. Once harnessed, if the chain is worn about the neck, the wearer receives a +4 bonus to intelligence. In addition, as long as the chain is worn, the wearer receives a +4 competency bonus to any Knowledge skill check. Faint Transmutation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Sodalite worth 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (Gemcutting) DC 30; Harnessed Market Value: 9,000 gp. Optional - Faint Transmutation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Sodalite worth 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, fox s cunning; Crafted Market Value: 17,000 gp. Tektite Heaven s Fury Scholars have long studied the heavens and the objects that reside there. Many have pondered over the objects that routinely fall from the heavens. Some call them falling stars, others claim they are the souls of the departed journeying to heaven, and still others claim that these falling objects are really just rocks. On rare occasions, people find heavy rocks made of metal that seem to have done just that, fallen from the sky. In addition to studying these heavenly bodies for their natural properties, wizards have studied these meteors for any magical properties they may contain. One famous wizard, Sai gen Shoemacher, had a large collection of meteors that he studied and pondered over, and eventually unlocked their natural magical property. The meteor s magic is harnessed not from the meteor itself, but from the rocks that form from the impact of the meteor with the ground. These made rocks are called tektites and when a tektite is re-melted and cast into a specially crafted mold, the natural magic is harnessed. The final shape of the cast object appears to be an irregular lump of stone the size of a small apple. The exact dimensions and shape of the mold are a closely guarded 15

secret among the wizards, as would-be imitators have discovered. Shoemacher gave the name of heaven s fury to his creation, and for good reason. When a heaven s fury is thrown to the ground, it summons forth four other meteors, roughly two feet in diameter, which randomly strike the area within a 10-foot radius of the spot where the heaven s fury landed. (To determine the exact location, roll 1d8 to determine the direction from the targeted square as you would for a splash weapon, and roll 1d6 to determine the distance from the targeted square. A result of 1-3 indicates that the summoned meteor falls five feet from the target, and a 4-6 indicates that the summoned meteor falls 10 feet from the target.) Should a person be standing in a spot where a meteor strikes, that person takes 2d6 points of bludgeoning damage. When a summoned meteor strikes something, it explodes in a 40-foot-radius spread, dealing 6d6 points of fire damage to each creature in the area. A successful Reflex save (DC 23) reduces this damage by half. Heaven s fury is a devastating weapon against exposed soldiers on a battlefield or against fortified structures. A heaven s fury can be thrown by hand with a range increment of 10 feet, or launched from a small catapult. Once used, the heaven s fury is destroyed. Strong Evocation; CL 17 th ; Prerequisites: Tektite worth 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (metalworking) DC 30; Harnessed Market Value: 5,000 gp; Weight: 3 pounds. Optional - Strong Evocation; CL 17 th ; Prerequisites: Tektite worth 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, meteor swarm; Crafted Market Value: 9,000 gp; Weight: 3 pounds. Tiger Eye Tiger s Eye The tiger s eye is harnessed from brown and black chalcedony and is carved into a smooth sphere. Once carved, the harnessed gem must replace one of the bearer s eyes for the magic to take effect. (The gem can replace a previously lost eye or the user of the gem can remove one of their eyes prior to inserting the gem.) Once the tiger s eye is in place, its magical properties can be used. The tiger s eye grants the wearer darkvision. Also, once per day, the wearer can transform into a dire tiger. (Transforming is a full round action, which provokes attacks of opportunity, and the wearer regains any lost hit points.) The wearer gains the physical attributes of the dire tiger (Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution) but retains their mental attributes (Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma). All gear and worn items transform as well and are not available for use while transformed. The transformed wearer cannot communicate or cast spells. (A creature wearing armor magically enhanced with the wild special ability preserves their armor bonus while transformed.) The transformed wearer can remain in the dire tiger form for up to ten minutes. Moderate Transmutation; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Tiger Eye gem worth 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 20,500 gp. Optional - Moderate Transmutation; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Tiger Eye gem worth 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, darkvision, polymorph; Crafted Market Value: 40,500 gp. 16

Topaz Gems of Energy Jewelers have long prized topaz for its wide array of colors. A shaman of the Sand Orcs first learned of the natural magical properties that can be harnessed from the topaz gem. This knowledge was passed only among the Sand Orcs for many generations but, like all things, the secret of the natural magic was soon learned by other spellcasters. Today, gems of energy can be found across the globe. To harness the magic from the topaz, a gem of the correct color must be carved into the correct shape. Depending on the beginning value of the topaz, the gem of energy will provide slight, moderate, or greater protection from one of the five different energy sources; fire, electricity, cold, acid, or sonic (whether from a natural or magical source). The table below details the colors of the topaz, their carved shape, value, and what protection they provide. The gems grant energy resistance to the bearer so that each time the creature takes damage from the appropriate source, that damage is then reduced by the appropriate amount. Topaz Color Energy Type Carved Shape Value/Energy Resistance Provided Slight Moderate Greater Red Fire Flame 500 gp/ gp/ gp/30 Clear Electricity Lightning Bolt 500 gp/ gp/ gp/30 Blue/White Cold Snowflake 500 gp/ gp/ gp/30 Green Acid Teardrop 500 gp/ gp/ gp/30 Orange Sonic Flute 500 gp/ gp/ gp/30 The protective power from gems of energy does not stack, so wearing multiple gems of one color does not increase the amount of damage that is reduced. The gems do stack with other sources of energy resistance, including spells like resist energy or other magical or non-magical items. In these cases the protection spell absorbs damage first until its power has been exhausted. Different types of gems of energy can be worn to provide protection from multiple energy sources. Slight Protection: Faint Abjuration; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (carving) DC 20; Harnessed Market Value: 10,500 gp. Optional - Slight Protection: Faint Abjuration; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, resist energy; Crafted Market Value: 20,500 gp. Moderate Protection: Moderate Abjuration; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (carving) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 15,000 gp. Optional - Moderate Protection: Moderate Abjuration; CL 7 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, resist energy; Crafted Market Value: 29,000 gp. Greater Protection: Moderate Abjuration; CL 11 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 2,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (carving) DC 30; Harnessed Market Value: 24,000 gp. 17

Optional - Great Protection: Moderate Abjuration; CL 11 th ; Prerequisites: Topaz of appropriate color worth 2,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, resist energy; Crafted Market Value: 46,000 gp. Uranite Death Bloom Uranite is a rare, yellow-black mineral that was long thought by scholars to be of little use other than as a source for yellow pigment. It was during the War of the Followers, which lasted for many decades, when a group of wizards were ordered to a secret location by their king in order to come up with a new weapon for his army. The wizards were led by a great mage named Uppen Highmere, and the group included some of the greatest wizards in the land. These wizards worked in secret for many years, only referring to their work by a code name, The Hat Man Project. When the project was completed, the wizards had unleashed the dangerous natural magic of the uranite mineral. Nicknamed death bloom by some of the younger wizards, it proved to be a powerful weapon for the King s armies. Like many powerful weapons, once the power had been harnessed, the genie was out of the bottle and it would not be contained. Within a couple of years, all the armies had developed their own death bloom weapons, and the fields of battle were covered with dead. It wasn t until the Treaty of Salt was signed that the use and creation of death blooms were brought under control and tightly regulated. Today, death blooms are highly restricted magic items in nearly every kingdom. Those caught in possession of the weapon are severely punished, often put to death. Of course, this means that there is a large black market trade in death blooms, and many smaller kingdoms are thought to be secretly developing their own death bloom stockpile as a deterrent against larger, more belligerent kingdoms. To harness the magical properties of uranite, the mineral is carved into a specially shaped geometric spheroid with 32 sides. The finished object is the size of a large walnut. A death bloom can be thrown with a range increment of 20 feet, it can be attached to the end of a specially-tipped arrow or crossbow bolt (the arrow or bolt suffers a 4 penalty to hit and has its range increment reduced by 20 feet), or it can be dropped from above (during the war, soldiers often dropped it from flying mounts on unprotected troops). When the death bloom lands, it erupts in a flash of light and affects all creatures within a 40-foot radius. Creatures with 8 or fewer HD get no saving throw and are instantly killed. Creatures of 9 or more HD suffer 6d6 points of damage; a successful Fortitude save (DC 20) negates this damage. A single death bloom can affect up to 40 HD worth of creatures. Dust, dirt, and other material in the area blooms into a yellow-black flower-shaped cloud 10 feet in height that rises from the point where the death bloom landed, giving the harnessed gem its name. Once used, the death bloom is destroyed. Strong Necromancy; CL 12 th ; Prerequisites: Uranite mineral worth 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 28; Harnessed Market Value: 5,500 gp. (This value reflects the black market price for acquiring a death bloom. The base price to harness the gem is 2,300 gp.) 18

Optional - Strong Necromancy; CL 12 th ; Prerequisites: Uranite mineral worth 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, circle of death; Crafted Market Value 10,500 gp. (This value reflects the black market price for acquiring a death bloom. The base price to craft the gem is 4,100 gp.) The Five Quartz Spheres The sphere has long been seen as a perfect form, embodying the very perfection of the universe itself. Early mages sought similar magical perfection when trying to harness gems and minerals. They experimented on many different types of gems and minerals spending long hours carving them into perfect spheres. This task seemed to have no effect in harnessing the natural magic from most gems and minerals. Then, around a thousand years ago, four mages, working independently, found five varieties of the mineral quartz that released natural magical properties when carved into perfect spheres. Scholars argue endlessly as to why only these five varieties of quartz release their natural magic when carved into a sphere. The debate is bound to continue for another millennia. In the meantime, adventurers have learned the value of the five quartz spheres. Amethyst Sphere of Magic A mineral alchemist, Faye Thinlight, was in the employ of the Torrolan military when he harnessed one of the first of the five known magical spheres, the sphere of magic. Since then, the knowledge to harness these items has spread across the globe and they have become a common sight in many cities where magic items are prohibited or the taxation of magic items provides much needed income. To harness its magical properties, a flawless amethyst crystal is cut and polished to a perfect sphere three inches in diameter. Once harnessed, a sphere of magic is continuously active. When a sphere of magic is within 30 feet of any other magical item, the sphere will glow with a faint purple light (the sphere does not glow in its own presence). This light is the same strength as that of a candle and provides dim illumination out to a range of 5 feet. The sphere of magic does not show the direction to the magic source or the strength of the magic it detects. It glows at the same strength regardless of the number of auras detected or the strength of those auras. Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Amethyst gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 2,250 gp. Optional - Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Amethyst gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, detect magic; Crafted Market Value: 3,500 gp. 19

Carnelian Sphere of Law A cleric of Volesk, the Balancer, named Garrin Gower, harnessed one of the first of the five known magical spheres, the sphere of law. Gower tried to keep the knowledge of harnessing the sphere of law within the church, but was eventually compelled by faith to pass on the knowledge to others. Since then, the knowledge to harness the sphere of law has spread across the globe and they have become a common sight in many cities and temples where they are used to identify law-abiding citizens. To harness its magical properties, a flawless carnelian crystal is cut and polished to a perfect sphere three inches in diameter. Once harnessed, the sphere of law is continuously active. When a sphere of law is within 30 feet of a creature, spell, or magic item with a lawful aura, the sphere will glow with a faint red-orange light. This light is the same strength as that of a candle and provides dim illumination out to a range of 5 feet. A sphere of law does not show the direction to the lawful aura, or the strength of the lawful aura it detects. It glows at the same strength regardless of the number of auras detected or the strength of those auras. Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Carnelian gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 3,500 gp. Optional - Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Carnelian gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, detect law; Crafted Market Value: 6,000 gp. Rock Crystal Sphere of Lyzar A cleric of Lyzar, God of Sun and Light, named Bran Prell, harnessed one of the first of the five known magical spheres, the Sphere of Lyzar. Bran immediately saw the usefulness of the Sphere of Lyzar and passed on the knowledge to as many people as he could. Since then, the knowledge to harness the Sphere of Lyzar has spread across the globe and they have become a common sight in many cities where they are used to identify evil citizens. This, however, has led many to preemptively remove or destroy the evil creature even if they have done no wrong, which has caused greater problems than if the creature had been left alone. To harness its magical properties, a flawless rock crystal is cut and polished to a perfect sphere three inches in diameter. Once harnessed, a Sphere of Lyzar is continuously active. When a Sphere of Lyzar is within 30 feet of a creature, spell, or magic item with an evil aura, the sphere will glow with a faint golden light. This light is the same strength as that of a candle and provides dim illumination out to a range of 5 feet. A Sphere of Lyzar does not show the direction to the evil aura, or the strength of the evil aura it detects. It glows at the same strength regardless of the number of auras detected or the strength of those auras. 20

Optional - Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Rock Crystal gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, detect evil; Crafted Market Value: 6,000 gp. Rose Quartz Sphere of Chaos A cleric of Volesk, the Balancer, named Garrin Gower harnessed yet another of the first of the five known magical spheres, the sphere of chaos. Again, Gower tried to keep the knowledge of harnessing the sphere of chaos within the church, but at the same time that he was compelled by faith to pass on the knowledge for harnessing the sphere of law, he was compelled to pass on the knowledge for harnessing the sphere of chaos. Since then, the knowledge to harness the sphere of chaos has spread across the globe and they have become a common sight in many cities and temples where they are used to identify chaotic citizens in the hopes of preventing them from causing harm. To harness its magical properties, a flawless rose quartz crystal is cut and polished to a perfect sphere three inches in diameter. Once harnessed, the sphere of chaos is continuously active. When a sphere of chaos is within 30 feet of a creature, spell, or magic item with a chaotic aura, the sphere will glow with a faint pink light. This light is the same strength as that of a candle and provides dim illumination out to a range of 5 feet. A sphere of chaos does not show the direction to the chaotic aura, or the strength of the chaotic aura it detects. It glows at the same strength regardless of the number of auras detected or the strength of those auras. Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Rose quartz gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 3,500 gp. Optional - Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Rose quartz gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, detect chaos; Crafted Market Value: 6,000 gp. Smoky Quartz Sphere of Tare A cleric of Tare, the Shadow Queen, named Cara Prell, harnessed one of the first of the five known magical spheres, the Sphere of Tare. Cara, the sister of Bran Prell, immediately saw the usefulness of the Sphere of Tare and secretly kept the knowledge of harnessing the Sphere of Tare from her brother. Only to those with similar faith as hers did she pass on the knowledge of harnessing the Sphere of Tare. Since then, the knowledge to harness the Sphere of Tare has spread across the globe among the faiths and races that espouse evil. They have become a common sight in many locations to identify good-aligned people to ferret out spies and infiltrators. To harness its magical properties, a flawless smoky quartz is cut and polished to a perfect sphere three 21

inches in diameter. Once harnessed, a Sphere of Tare is continuously active. When a Sphere of Tare is within 30 feet of a creature, spell, or magic item with a good aura, the sphere will glow with a sickly, pale white light. This light is the same strength as that of a candle and provides dim illumination out to a range of 5 feet. A Sphere of Tare does not show the direction to the good aura, or the strength of the good aura it detects. It glows at the same strength regardless of the number of auras detected or the strength of those auras. Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Smoky quartz gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 25; Harnessed Market Value: 3,500 gp. Optional - Faint Divination; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Smoky quartz gem worth at least 1,000 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, detect good; Crafted Market Value: 6,000 gp. The Four Quartz Skulls Long ago, an ancient people learned how to harness the magical properties of quartz by carving the quartz into the shape of a human skull. These ancient people created numerous magical skulls but, with their extinction, the knowledge to create the skulls was lost for millennia. It was only recently that explorers and scholars have rediscovered these skulls and have started to delve their secrets. Only a few have succeeded in learning the ancient skill and have begun to harness the natural magic of the quartz skulls once again. Amethyst Skull of Strength A skull of strength is carved from a flawless crystal of amethyst of a light violet color. The skull that is carved is about two inches in height. Once carved, the skull s natural magical properties are released. When a person carries or holds a skull of strength, their strength increases by +4. Scratching or otherwise damaging the skull negates its magical property. Faint Transmutation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Amethyst gem worth 500 gp, Harness Gem, Craft (gemcutting) DC 30; Harnessed Market Value: 8,500 gp. Optional - Faint Transmutation; CL 5 th ; Prerequisites: Amethyst gem worth 500 gp, Craft Wondrous Item, bull s strength; Crafted Market Value: 16,500 gp. Rock Crystal Skull of Healing A skull of healing is carved from a flawless rock crystal. The skull that is carved is about two inches in height. Once carved, the skull s natural magical properties are released. When a person carries or holds a skull of healing, they gain fast healing 2. Scratching or otherwise damaging the skull negates its magical property. 22
