Search around your house and you can probably find things you already have to put together a creative Halloween costume! Scarecrow: Find faded, too-large blue jeans and a work-type shirt. Use rope for the belt and to tie at the bottoms of the legs of the jeans and sleeves. Stuff the oversize shirt and jeans with plastic grocery bags or tissue paper. Add a little straw to hang out of the ends of the arms and legs. Add makeup use lipstick to color the nose and black eyeliner to draw triangles around the eye area. Obnoxious tourist: Find a loud Hawaiian shirt and shorts (if weather permits). Top off with a large straw hat. For girls, use a loud dress, thongs or sandals, a big sun hat or straw hat. Don t forget to hang a camera around your neck (preferably an old broken cheap one!) and carry maps and look like you re lost! Old man: Dark baggy pants and jacket, most any dress shirt, mans floppy hat, walking cane. Tint hair gray with commercial, temporary spray-on coloring, or dust with some flour! Old woman: Find an old-fashioned, longer dress, knee-hi stockings rolled down enough to be visible, some sort of clunky shoes and a large black purse. The Geek: Slick back the hair with mousse or hair spray. Find some pants that are too short, a white shirt (preferably one with a pocket for pens and protector!), white socks, penny loafers, or lace up oxfords, dark rim glasses s (don t forget to put tape on the corner!). Use a briefcase for treat bag. Miss America : Use an old bridesmaid or formal dress and add a pair of gloves, a tiara, some oversized jewelry, and high heels. For the banner, use a piece of wide ribbon, and write Miss America in glitter pen. Mummy: Wear solid black clothing and wrap yourself in white bandages using rolls of gauze. Add splotches of green paint for mold. Use white make-up on face with age lines drawn on. Walk with a stiff-legged gait for extra credit!

6 For Trick-or-Treaters Stay in familiar neighborhoods. Carry a flashlight. Walk on sidewalks. Obey traffic signals and look both ways before crossing the street. Wear reflective clothing and make sure your costume doesn t drag on the ground. Wear shoes that fit and are comfortable for walking. Wear a watch that you can read in the dark. Only approach houses that are well-lit. Don t pet animals you don t know. If you re going to carry a sword or other prop, make sure it s flexible so you don t poke anyone. For Parents: Give your child a cell phone so they can call home if needed. Be sure your child eats dinner before starting out. Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult. Equip your children with a watch, preferably one they can read in the dark. Purchase costumes made of flame-retardant material. Plan a route and know where your child is going and when they will be home. Tell children to bring all candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.

Chocolate Ghoul-osh You ll need: 1 (7-ounce) box of caramel-popcorn-nut snack 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup candy corn 1/2 cup Reese s Pieces 1 cup spooky gummy candies (worms, spiders and bugs) Directions: Spread your popcorn mix onto a foil-lined baking sheet. Melt chocolate; pour into a plastic zip-top bag. Snip off a corner of the bag and squeeze out chocolate over popcorn. Refrigerate. Combine popcorn mixture and remaining ingredients. Serve in paper cups. Witch Pumpkin Candy Broom Spider Skeleton Bat Popcorn Balls This sweet crunchy treat is a long-time favorite of trick-or-treaters. You ll need: 2 quarts of already popped popcorn 1/4 cup butter (must use real butter, not margarine) 1/3 cup dark corn syrup 1 cup brown sugar, well packed 1/3 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract candy thermometer Directions: Set aside popped corn in a separate large bowl. In a saucepan, combine water, corn syrup, brown sugar, butter and salt. While stirring constantly, bring to a boil over medium heat. Continue cooking, without stirring, until the candy thermometer reads 270 degrees F (soft-crack stage). Remove from the heat and stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over popcorn and stir everything until evenly coated. When popcorn mixture is cool enough to handle, quickly shape into balls.
