1 1 HAIR & SCALP TREATMENTS Just like the skin, there are numerous types of hair and scalp problems. These can range from oily to dry hair, to having no hair at all and can include your scalp as well. Some problems include sensitivities, infections, Dandruff, Seborrhea, Psoriasis; as well as damage caused by chemically treated hair, dry and itchy scalp due to changes in the weather, skin disease, surgery and stress. Cleansing Components In order to treat these common problems and symptoms we must understand what products can do. In effect, we must alter the aesthetics of the hair and the epidermal layer of the scalp. Foaming Agents: Creates bubbling more commonly known as lather. Spreads the cleaning agent over the hair and scalp, but does not help cleanse. Sequestering Agents: Chelates (binds and precipitates) magnesium and calcium ions to prevent the formation of [insoluble] soap scum. It can occur anywhere on the scalp and skin causing itching and symptoms associated with seborrhea dermatitis. Conditioners: Creates manageable hair that has become over cleansed. Adds sheen and some body to hair. ph Adjusters: Damage control by adding an acid to the product as not to create alkalinization. This is a problem caused by alkaline detergents that swell the hair shaft. It creates damage by loosening the protective cuticle on the shaft and causing the hair to dry out and loose luster. Specialty Additives: Special and active ingredients provide functions not attainable with the basic components commonly found in shampoos. Shampoo Types Special Scalp: Persons suffering from sensitivities due to skin disorders, hair transplants, medical treatments and sunburn need a very gentle shampoo that offers cleaning capabilities and special qualities to keep the scalp from further injury. Normal Hair: Persons with moderate sebum and hair that is not chemically processed. Dry/Damaged Hair: Mild cleansing with good conditioning. Oily Hair: Optimizes the removal of excess sebum from the scalp and hair shaft. Everyday: Use mild detergents to minimize the chance of damage. Deep Cleansing: Thoroughly removes sebum and waxy build-up caused by styling products, shampoos, conditioners and treatments. Deep Cleansers should be used once a week to keep a scalp free and clear of debris. Medicated: Delivers benefits beyond cleansing the scalp. They are OTC drugs and regulated by the FDA. Help removal of sebum, decrease scalp scale and its production, and to act antibacterial/antifungal agents. Medical Conditions You may be able to control your problem with OTC products and may not initially need the professional assistance of a dermatologist. Should your problem be severe, it would be wise to visit a board-certified dermatologist. Dandruff is due to the excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. As it is normal for skin cells to die and flake off, a small amount of flaking is normal and in fact quite common. Some people, however, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an unusually large amount of flaking, which can also be accompanied by

2 2 redness and irritation. Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos. Psoriasis is a disorder which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production that cannot slough off. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes on a silvery-white appearance. Plaques frequently occur on the skin of the elbows and knees, but can affect any area including the scalp and genitals. In contrast to eczema, psoriasis is more likely to be found on the extensor aspect of the joint. Seborrhea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects the areas of the head and trunk that have sebaceous glands. A type of yeast that has an affinity for these glands called Pityrosporum ovale may be the cause, but this has not been proven yet. It is believed that the build-up of yeast in these glands irritates the skin causing redness and flaking. Hair Loss Many people think that this may be hereditary and fall into the class of male pattern baldness. This, to a degree, is accurate. For many individuals, the problem can be very different. Natural regrowth of hair is a result of improved hygiene and being able to limit the toxicity of sebum as it oxidizes in contact within the hair follicle, this can be remedied with a few products that we now offer. What does ph mean? A. Alkalines and acids have different effects on the hair. Acids will harden and contract the hair, while alkalines expand and soften the hair shaft. Hair and skin has a ph level of between 4.5 and 5.5 (an average of 5), and any application of acidic and alkaline compounds can raise or lower the ph levels of the hair causing physical changes. Shampoos, conditioners and other chemical hair products use acids and alkalis to affect changes in the hair. Many clarifying shampoos use alkaline ingredients to swell the hair shaft and allow the surfactants to penetrate more deeply. Most hair relaxers use a strong alkali to soften the hair, break the side bonds of the hair and remove curl. In addition, many conditioners and moisturizing shampoos use acidic compounds to contract the hair shaft, smoothing it and locking in moisture.
