2 Study Highlights US Demand The US market for cosmetic and toiletry containers is expected to grow 2.1 percent per annum through 2003 to over 16 billion units. Plastic containers will continue to dominate the industry and outpace other material types. Paperboard containers will benefit from above average gains in such end uses as hair color preparations, which require a box to house multiple containers. Glass containers will remain dominant in perfume and mid-toupper lotion and cream markets, as well as in the packaging of nail cosmetics. Toiletry markets with favorable growth prospects include hair and skin care, with sun care products and hair colors among the fastest growing applications. Lip and nail cosmetics will continue to do well, based on fashion trends and consumers' tendency toward purchasing multiple colors of these products. Industry Structure and Participants In 1998, the top five players held 39 percent of the US market. Excluded are secondary containers not designed for use beyond the point of sale (e.g., shipping crates and merchandise display boxes), flexible packaging, and dispensers, closures and applicators. Also excluded are containers for personal bar soaps, medicated toiletry products and "hard" personal care items like tooth and hair brushes, dental floss, moist towelettes and razors. Leading companies include Algroup Wheaton (Alusuisse Lonza), Owens-Brockway (Owens-Illinois), Pechiney, Silgan Plastics (Silgan Holding) and US Can. MARKET ENVIRONMENT Age Distribution Patterns Because different age groupings tend to purchase certain personal care products more than others, the size and growth of different age cohorts can strongly affect sales of various cosmetic and toiletry products. Furthermore, there is an increasing SAMPLE PAGE trend toward catering to various age groupings via product differentiation, and one vital way in which this is done is through packaging. For instance, bath products for children are often packaged in bottles featuring cartoon characters, while those targeted to the teen market are typically packaged in bright tubes and innovative bottle designs. For older age groupings, nostalgic packaging designed to look like old-fashioned apothecary containers is finding favor. In any case, population segments exhibiting strong growth are prime areas of opportunity for personal care product manufacturers, and thus for cosmetic and toiletry container producers. Through 2003, areas of relatively strong growth include that portion of the population over 44, and, to a lesser extent, those between five and 24 years of age. While the 15-to-24 age grouping is projected to increase only 0.6 percent annually through below aggregate population growth -- this cohort is crucial due to relatively high disposable incomes and a disproportionate amount of spending on personal care products. Teenagers' incomes in aggregate have swelled from $86 billion in 1993 to well over $110 billion in 1998, and teens are estimated to spend over $4 billion dollars per year on cosmetics alone. Furthermore, teens tend to be more susceptible to advertising and spontaneous purchases. The personal care product industry is also responding to projected gains of nearly two percent per annum in the five-to-14 year old grouping by targeting bath products and even cosmetics to older children or pre-teens. Estee Lauder's purchase of JANE cosmetics is a telling indicator of the importance of marketing to older children, teenagers and persons of college-age. Demand for glass cosmetic and toiletry jars, or pots, is expected to grow 1.7 percent through 2003 to 305 million units. Advances will exceed increases in SAMPLE PAGE bottles, due mainly to healthy growth potential in upscale mass and prestige creams, which will receive a boost from the affluent baby boom generation. Limiting gains will be a general trend toward plastics in pots and jars for color cosmetics, even at the high end. An example of recent design in glass jars is Lancome's HYDRA ZEN skin cream, which is packaged in a clear, frosted glass jar designed to reflect the shape of a rice bowl, with the diameter markedly smaller at the bottom than at the top. Created by SGD Glass, the bottle is decorated on both sides with silk screen, a feat made difficult by the slop of the jar's size. Most jars and pots used in personal care are simply shaped, and the use of stock containers is common. In the US, a variety of stock jars are produced by major glass container manufacturers such as SGD Glass and Carr Lowrey. As with bottles, the use of stock over custom jars can lower costs, shorten lead times and take advantage of economies of scale in manufacturing. MARKETS Skin Cleansers Container demand for skin cleansers is expected to increase 3.2 percent per SAMPLE PAGE annum through 2003 to 670 million units. This segment encompasses liquid hand cleansers, facial cleansers, bubble bath, shower gels and miscellaneous skin cleansers other than bar soap (which is not included in this study).
