In fact, there practically is no place on earth where the plastic pollution we produce is not found, and the effect is startling. On land and sea, to the deepest parts of the ocean floor, we have flooded the world with plastic. 8 CLEAN ENERGY Prior to the development of coal in the mid-19th century, nearly all energy used was renewable. Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that is collected from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. Most likely the oldest known use of renewable energy, in the form of traditional biomass to fuel fires, dates from 790,000 years ago. Probably the second oldest usage of renewable energy is harnessing the wind in order to drive ships over water. This practice can be traced back some 7000 years, to ships on the Nile. In the mid-1800s, Europe and the United States experienced the industrial revolution and became dependent on non-renewable energies. While allowing PAGE 8

9 us to forge ahead and become a globally powered planet, at the same time the innovations created a new set of issues that we as a world community now have to address. The problems we are facing now are increased consumption, finite supply of resources, carbon imbalance, rising temperatures, air pollution and environmental disasters. These impacts are caused by harmful greenhouse emissions, damaging the ozone layer which acts as a shield from the sun s radiation; increasing respiratory issues, acid rain which is corrosive to buildings and detrimental to local ecosystems. Oil spill toxicities are endangering our aquatic wildlife, the destruction of forest stations and pollution of lakes for animal agriculture are causing havoc to our natural environment. Using renewable energy such as solar energy, wind farms and tidal energy will help to combat environmental issues which will reduce greenhouse emissions and improve air quality. Currently approximately 19% of humans global energy consumption comes from renewable sources. Within four decades, we have the opportunity to make that number 80%. 18 PROVIDING A SAFE HAVEN FOR ALL LIFE Every living thing needs somewhere to live, find food and reproduce. This is known as their habitat. Habitat loss is possibly the greatest threat to the natural world. In order for a species to be viable, its habitat must have sufficient territory, necessary food and water, and a range of necessary physical features. Habitat loss happens when land cover or its aquatic equivalent is transformed, usually as a result of human impacts. for larger animals because they need a greater area in which to have a healthy breeding population. Tigers, mountain gorillas, pandas and Indian lions are good examples, but habitat loss does not only affect land animals but possibly 40 or more species, including fish in the Mediterranean whom are already in endangered and could disappear in the next few years. The world s forests, swamps, lakes and other habitats continue to disappear as we make way for agriculture; housing, roads, pipelines and all the other hallmarks of industrial development. Human activity is responsible for the loss of nearly half the forest stations that once covered the Earth. Even though these forests can recover and can even be sustainably harvested, their rate of loss is about ten times higher than the rate of regrowth, it ll take over 100 years for the Amazon to be reconstructed. 19 Tropical orchids that thrive in the rain forests are at serious risk of losing their home and so are numerous bird species from a wide variety of habitats. In fact the only species that are not truly affected by habitat loss are creatures that benefit from human activity such as cockroaches and rats. Pollution from toxic substances such as industrial chemicals, pesticides and motor oil are also a real problem. Dredging ship channels stir up accumulated sediments and pollutants and the toxic waste material is often dumped on salt marshes, destroying the habitats of the creatures that live there. Accidents at sea have a had a profound effect on habitat destruction. Several large oil tankers have been involved in major spills, including the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Each case filled with enormous quantities of oil have been released into the ocean, devastating the entire area s ecosystems. The world is getting warmer and climate change is real and it s happening now with a serious influence on habitat loss. Many natural habitats have already become inhospitable.
